OCTADE
@octade@soc.octade.net
OCTADE or OCTAD is a retro word that means either an octal digit of three bits, or an octal octet or an eight-bit byte. Thus an octade, depending on its historical use, is either 3 bits or 8 bits.
OCTADE was used to specify eight bits, as opposed to BYTE which is not necessarily eight bits as the word BYTE could signify any of several numbers of bits.
This yields the retro 1337 numbers of 38 and 83. The number 38 is one more than 37 so a bit more elite a bit cooler. Thus it owns cardinally shorter byterz.
83 mod 38 equals 7, the highest octal digit. 838 mod 383 equals 72 or 9 times 8 which is 8 squared plus 8.
8338 mod 3883 equals 572 which is 72 times 8 minus 4 or 71.5 times 8.
8383 mod 3838 equals 707 which is 88 times 8 plus 3.
I prefer the old word OCTADE to the word BYTE. OCTADE sports a Euro-peon dignity and gravitas like an Internet serf ready to surf the worknet like pwnd peons. This is very true when pronouncing OCTADE with a thick Pennsyltucky Dutch or Yinzer accent. The Bostonian pronunciation sounds like bad beginner German or muffled mumbling of 'lactate.'
OCTADE or OCTAD was also used to describe a poem of eight stanzas.
OCTADE was also used to describe a period of eight years, or two leap years.
OCTADECANAL is a pheromone found in butterflies. It is butterfly perfume. I would not wear butterfly cologne. But I would sell it. Who would buy and wear my snobby smell? With wordplay we can call it OCTADE CHANNEL No. 8 . All rights reserved, ye French odor snooties.

Welcome @octade@soc.octade.net thank you for the follow. For whatever reason I'm only seeing old posts here (7 months and older). That's probably fine, the one was recently boosted, so that's why that's showing up. Checked out, and you are indeed active. I can't come up with a quick "sense" of why one may want to follow, though you look like a cool real person (which a good amount of follow requests do not even pass the most basic sniff test).
Good person, not so much. Troublemaker, so much the more.
@octade@soc.octade.net Being the right kind of trouble maker makes you a good person. One who doesn't make trouble, is unlikely to change any broken systems. Or even care about the broken systems.
@octade@soc.octade.net I noticed you sent me a follow request. did you actually read my profile before doing so?
"when attempting to follow: dm me a bird pic. it is required!"In conformity to your requirements I proffer these bird pictures as the price of admission.
I pray that these bird pix meet your standards of admission. Let me know if you require more.
I about fell off my rocking horse when I realized what I was doing. Roasted with a roast turkey!
It's nice to see someone actually reads instead of just looking at the yummy pictures of turkey!
BTW, I still adore heffalumps and woozles and Eeyore.

22 Tongue Slinger
Cowboys grazing
on bacon and beans;
Their six guns are blazing
Ablast across the vast plains.
Tounges are slinging,
Brass bells are ringing,
Black powder is singing,
Bullets of words are zinging.
The tongue slinger
Is a hum dinger
A whiz and a zinger
A poetic dead ringer!
Tongue slinger verse
Grows faster and worse
And once words have shot you
Blasted brains flee with a curse.
Babbling brains
Repeat the refrains
Of six guns a-blazing
A tongue slinger--amazing!

@octade Oh, ok. Cool. Where r u? I'm in Vegas 12 and a half years from California several years but originally from Maryland.
I moved from Pennsyltucky to the Ozarks. I used to hang my hat near Sparks, NV once in a while.
@octade Oh! wow! Sparks seems so secluded to me. I love the city life. Love it when transportation's extremely totally available to me.
@octade You had me at Yinz; I went there for college.
I don't know if it's original or not, but it's the first time I've heard it and I laughed audibly at "yinzer phonics" @octade.
Y'all. I haven't been on fedi long enough for y'all to truly get a sense of how much I hate the head of the other department. It could power a small country for several weeks.
She's leaving at the end of February.
And the icing on the cake was in the announcement, my very personable and loving boss who 99.999% of the time very purposefully says she is sad to see someone go, made no such statement.
IT'S FUCKING DELICIOUS.
I'm trying to decide what I'm treating myself with for dinner to celebrate. This is EPIC fucking news. She has caused a literal rift between the two departments almost from the beginning of her time. We asked them to follow data standards and she replied "Yeah we don't have time for that." and really it all went downhill from there. She pits her entire team against us in every possible way she can. It's a daily battle.
Her team better be on their best fucking behaviour. More than one of them is only still with us because she likes them.
"She pits her entire team against us in every possible way she can. It's a daily battle."Sounds like just another day in geek world. Especially online.
I recently talked with a peer who had a department head like this. Always throwing a wrench in the gears and forcing everyone to put out brushfires that never should have sparked in the first place. He was also ecstatic about the malefactor being canned. They put the peer in charge who immediately canned the other misfits and laid down the law that no more drama would be tolerated.
@octade Yeah we are mostly virtual, it doesn't help things.
I won't miss her. Or whatever of her team gets canned when she's gone.

@troberts I'll just say that I know what you're talking about because I've just read the headline on an Italian newspaper.
I suspect that your reputation as a country is going down significantly around here :D
(for about 10 minutes, until everybody forgets about it)
@troberts fresh pineapple perhaps (never the over sweet stuff canned in syrup) but only if balanced with approximately equal weight of anchovies
@troberts Onion, sausage, and pineapple (liberally sprinkled with red pepper flakes) is my go-to. So good!

Also I aggressively pushback against any Italian gatekeeping nonsense. I'll break my spaghetti and have a cappuccino at 3pm, and there's not a damn thing you can do about it!
@antonio106 @troberts you sure we can't do anything?
/me eyes the bottle of maple syrup and wonders what unholy thing it could be used on :D
@troberts vegetarian, with olives and pineapple.
But I really don't have a problem with people not liking pineapple on pizza. They can eat their pizza, I'll eat mine 🤷🏻♂️
@troberts I find it funny people can be so purist about pineapple but happily put other non-traditional things on pizza like jalapenos or American pepperoni.

Be sure to jack up the volume BEFORE you play it.
The suggestion at the end of this might be a viable option.
Use application, 'testdisk' to analyze without writing any changes. If it can detect the lost exfat tables then it can be recovered. I have done this with multiple failed media and drives. Be sure to read the documentation carefully before running it.
Exfat writes a backup boot region. Testdisk should be able to check for this.
If that doesn't work there is ddrescue and photorec for finding and recovering individual files.
You might also use 'dd' to raw copy the damaged volume to an image file and write that image file to other external media then try running 'testdisk' and other tools on the copy. You can keep the image file as a backup as you try to recover the data from a copy first, to avoid the risk of further damage to the card.
I made a X account awhile back.
Within hours I have dozens and dozens of spam accounts following me.
I reported many of them.
Twitter / X staff responded that none of them were in violation of the TOS.
They were almost all jailbait young female picture accounts, pushing taglines about how much they were interested in me. Obvious malicious spam.
I logged out for like a year or more.
I logged in again recently and they tried to sell me on a paid account and 'get verified' when I hadn't even been able to use the service. Gag.
Avoiding X is easy.

Since I'm on Debian the python3 version is not recent enough to install the pip package. This is why I am annoyed by versioning and fragmentation in the Linux ecosystem. Recent versions should be backwards compatible, especially with the same base version number.
I'm not surprised. Python devs instantly obsoleted billions and billions of lines of Python2.7 code with their sunset to v3. This is why I stopped programming in Python altogether.

[demo] https://files.octade.net/
I drafted a prototype for a PHP server application that automatically hashes and signs files and presents visitors with verification archives containing digital signatures for offline verification. The site allows readers to view, download, hash, and verify signatures of files. Since I occasionally like to publish puzzles and bits of cryptology, I just had to make this to scratch the old itch.
The neat thing about this design is that the current version has zero JavaScript. It uses CSS3 hacks with anchors and URL probing to emulate JavaScript and AJAX functionalities for modal dialogs to present server-side JSON data as HTML text.
When I upload files or documents to the server, the interface automatically presents them to the user in a grid. So now all I have to do is upload files and documents and the server generates the site.
The reader can then click buttons to hash, sign, view, verify, and download files.
GnuPG and OpenSSL Signatures are generated automatically on user demand. The site visitors can download these signatures and the public keys to verify files.
What should I add / change in the application and its interface?
What accessibility components might be warranted?
Should the application parse and present EXIF data, or is that too much?

SSH can use SSHFS to allow access to remote folders natively inside the OS file manager (Caja, Nautilus, PCManFM, Dolphin, etc.) Thus it is easy to mirror file folders or upload encrypted files to the VPS just by dragging with the mouse or doing a copy via CLI.
SSH can be configured to use with a VNC viewer to run a graphical desktop to control a remote machine. The user can set up a VPS as a graphical desktop system and log in to a window manager or desktop environment such as XFCE or FluxBox.
SSH can also be used to pipe remote mail folders to a local mbox folder so that a local email client can read mail without accessing the POP/IMAP server.

The lion's share of Internet content is fake and bot generated.
35 % of content is bots.
50% of website articles are ai-generated.
74% of web pages consist at least partially of ai generated content.
These numbers are taken from recent studies.
I believe that much of the Internet was already AI generated long before the release of open-source AI tools and before most people ever knew AI existed.
Many popular youtube channel comment feeds are mostly ai profiles making ai generated comments.

Freedom means being free to be who you are instead of being pressed into a mold for administrative or ideological convenience.
Most slaves love their slavery and have no concept of real freedom. The idea is foreign to them. So they replace freedom with license to fill the void. They march to the piping tune of liberation fronts and liberation theology and nation-saving movements and nation-saving theology. It's all satanic bullshit dreamed up by the ruling con artists.
If you want to pass laws to restrict the liberty of your neighbor you have no right to cry when they turn the tables and do the same to you. If you want to force your neighbor to agree to things, you have no right to complain when they turn the tables and do the same to you.
People who do not trust in the divine to render judgment seek to usurp his place. And they always carry out this usurpation in the name of some noble cause.
If you think I'm going to take sides, you are mistaken. Both sides are WRONG. Both sides are the baddies. There are no good guys in these wars.
The good guys refuse to participate in playtime with monsters.

Size of bus, and hit like bus.
A sperm whale has so much mass that if it slammed into you at top speed, you would fly apart like a chunk of ham under a sledgehammer. An orca is not as hefty, but would still fracture all the bones with a fast ram.
The Internet is a ventriloquist. Who is the dummy? Whose hand is that making your tongue wag and your eyes water?

RUST_BACKTRACE=1 environment variable to display a backtraceThis ought to be suppressed by default. The old GNU tools and coreutils I was using handled broken pipes gracefully by not bothering the user during commands that are meant to break a pipe as part of the stream processing. Now I have to re-write all my hundreds of scripts to trap this kind of stuff. Maybe they just want to make sure you know Rust is under the hood. IDK.
Programming has blown up into utter ridiculousness. I think I need to go touch grass again.
It would not be a privacy nightmare for me. I would just refuse to own a phone. Privacy problem solved.
I know a man who still uses a flip phone and has never owned a smart phone and never had an Internet connection. No android or ios, no apps. He lives completely without Internet and computers and he is doing just fine.
I also lived using only a flip phone and without Internet for several years. In that time I accomplished more than half my life prior.

The 'statue of Liberty' is a rendering of Mithras, also known as 'Helios-Apollo' and also known as 'Lucifer'. It is a racial supremacy symbol of the Euro-American elite ruling class descended from the Holy Roman Empire nobility.
Why the Inquisition Built the Surveillance State

The real motive behind web 2.0, web 3.0, the cloud, AI, and panopticon nonsense is to identify and isolate heretics.
"They began with the network. If you can find one suspected heretic and interrogate them about their associations, who they speak to, who they share meals with, whose homes they visit and which neighbours are sympathetic, you can build a list of names."
"Then, you visit each of those people on the list and ask them the same questions. From this you can build a map of the entire community, identifying relationships and flagging suspects."[. . . . .]
"They used the social fabric of communities and rewarded those who denounced others. They reduced penalties for cooperation, and built the assumption that staying silent is itself suspicious."
"They made it so the rational choice for any individual in the community is to inform on neighbours before neighbours inform on them. This creates a self-policing community. The community does the work, with the institution as the receiving authority."
"Think about that for a moment, because it describes the current digital surveillance apparatus exactly."This is exactly how the bulk of social media and online platforms work to maintain thought control and censorship. It is following the Roman model of fascism, while pretending to denounce fascism, or vocally denouncing socialism, while supporting socialism for the rich. The people screaming the loudest about 'fascists' or 'socialists' or 'communists' or 'liberals' or 'nationalists' or 'racists' are in fact the imperial collaborators, the turncoats, the snitches, the sellouts, the shills, etc.

The trinity is the golden calf at Sinai. When the Israelites came out of Egypt (the new covenant) they brought the trinity of Egypt with them in their hearts and minds.
You can take the Israelite out of Egypt, but you also need to take Egypt out of the Israelite! The trinity is the imaginary god of Egypt. The Christian religion is Egypt.
In order to enter the kingdom of God you must repent of worshiping the trinity. God the Father is not a trinity. Only the Father is God. The Christian doctrine of the trinity is the idol the prophets warned us about.
The Unitarian faith is the faith of the Apostles and the only true God. The Trinitarian faith is a false faith in a false, Greek, metaphyical construct.
The Bible is NOT a book of metaphysics. It uses spiritual examples and parables to describe concrete things. The Greco-Roman 'church fathers' poisoned the well by applying pagan metaphysics to the Bible, creating the cargo cult known as the Nicene Creed and the Athanasian Creed.
God the Father is a spirit. He is not a man. He did not incarnate as a man. He raised up and sent a man to be our sacrifice for sin. Everything the trinitarians teach twists the Bible into a lie.
The Christian religion is Egypt, Babylon, Assyria, Rome, Grecia, etc. The Christian religion is the culmination of the statue in Nebuchadnezzar's dream.
Come out of the religion and find the real Jesus and be free!
The promise of the new covenant is that when the new order came, those who follow God the Father will have no need of any teacher or bishop or hierarchy to tell them to know God. God said we would have no need of a man to be our teachers or spiritual fathers. God promised that all of us will know him directly and not need anyone other than Jesus to lead the way.
The Christian religion impersonates Jesus and stands in the way, usurping his throne, as prophesied.

I recently discovered this channel. I have watched some their streams exposing the insanity of militant trinitarians. They are doing good work.

Will someone chime in with a list of bible software they have found useful? I'm using Linux and always on the lookout for new tools. Links would be helpful.
So far I have the applications: Xiphos, Bibletime, Widemargin, and Diatheke.

Finding that perfect specimen of a paper bible is like a treasure hunt. I found one good pocket edition with a readable font many years ago and I carried it everywhere 'religiously'.
Now I read 99% on a computer screen.

We wrote an honest comparison of Zerion against Signal, WhatsApp, Telegram, Threema, Wire, Session, Cwtch and Tox.
Honest meaning: Signal gets credit for pioneering post-quantum key exchange, Cwtch is genuinely close in spirit, and each app is the right call for some threat model.
Where Zerion stands alone: post-quantum encryption on every single message, and everything (including calls) over Tor.

**First entry into RetroShare: how to find peers**
In RetroShare you don’t “find people” in the usual sense. You don’t search — you agree. This is a fundamental mindset shift; without it, the first launch will always feel empty.
The first thing to accept: there is no global lobby in RetroShare. The emptiness after installation is not a bug, but the honest state of a network without links. Until you have trusted contacts, you literally have no network.
**The basic method — out-of-band contact.**
Peers are found outside RetroShare. These are friends, colleagues, members of thematic communities, people from Matrix, XMPP, IRC, Mastodon, forums — any place where key exchange can happen safely. RetroShare does not start with a “search” button, but with the phrase: “here is my key.”
**The second path — a control peer.**
The most reliable way for first entry is a second instance you control, or a pre-arranged experimental partner. This removes uncertainty: if the connection fails, the issue is technical, not social.
**The third path — thematic islands.**
There are small RetroShare communities built around ideas: privacy, P2P, darknet research, offline activism. They are not widely advertised because the network is not designed for random influx. Entry always starts with dialogue, not a click.
**What does not work.**
Publishing keys into the void. Waiting for someone to add you. Relying on auto-discovery. This is centralized-network thinking applied to a system where it has no meaning.
**How to know you’ve found a peer.**
The contact comes online. The connection stabilizes. Services start working: chat, forums, file exchange. At that point RetroShare stops being an abstraction and becomes an environment for communication.
**Bottom line:**
in RetroShare, people appear first —
and only then does the network emerge.

Horseradish is a type of radish, with spicy flavour and eaten by horses. However this is simply partly true — the only accurate part is its strong taste. It also belongs to the Brassicaceae family (along with cabbage, mustard and, yes, radish).
