A highly libertarian society, with a vast diversity of values and customs, is a fractured society, without the bonds of common culture except those that emerge in pockets as people of similar preferences gather together

so, like, a globalized, plural society such as the one we’re supposed to be living in?

Or take a personal practice like polygany – the taking of multiple wives. Libertarians would hesitate to regulate such a behaviour, yet polygany can also destabilise society. A deficit of potential mates increases levels of male competition for status, often leading to violent conflict.

@codinghorror if you think anarchism is individualistic you probably need to read more about anarchism.

Anarchists tend to be dismissive of libertarians, because libertarians haven't followed through the logic of their arguments.

For any of us to be free, we all must be free. The only liberation is collective

Freedom from hierarchy is not an individual concern. Hierarchies are groups, and to be free of them is not to suppose that we have complete freedom, it is to assert that we are all equal

@nixCraft Naaaa, it's quite easy, if I may:

Use -s if you want a symbolic link (else use nothing),
and the order is always <from> <to>

So, some kind of spell to use:
link (ln) symbolic (-s) from to

                                            or for hard links
                                            link (ln) from to

After a few times you never forget this again.

                                            Bonus:

if you want to replace or create a symbolic link (in a script for example), replace -s with -nsf

                                              1. The main confusion with ln is not the "-s", it's the order of the two names, i.e., does "ln a b" link a to b or b to a?

                                              2. I couldn't get confused about this daily because I don't use it anywhere near daily.

                                              3. Seriously I can't remember ever using ln without the "-s". I do find "ln -s" sometimes handy.

The End of the Privacy of Digital Correspondence

The EU Commission proposes to oblige providers to search all private chats, messages, and emails automatically for suspicious content – generally and indiscriminately. The stated aim: To prosecute child sexual exploitation material (CSEM). We've actually talked about this before, too. All I can post is 500 characters, that's all. It's such a miniscule amount and it's terrible. Hence the reason why I always write that something is a snippet and also share the link to said story for those who are curious. My instance has the smallest number of characters for alt-text and I hate it. There's nothing more I can do about it. I'm hoping it'll change in the future, though. Fingers crossed. I know that folk like Cory Doctrow do threaded responses and a link. On occasion, I do them also, especially if I need to CW the excerpt that begins in the first reply. Yeah, threading—apportioning out a post over a number of replies—is a PITA, but for a bit more effort, splitting an excerpt will allow the author you are in your soul to control the exact excerpt presented for effect. Of course, link it, too! Any promo is a good promo if you suck in a reader!

The byte limit for images is magnitudes higher. Defaulting to 500 is likely not saving anyone disk space compared to already compressed jpegs or pings, even if the server further compresses them or lowers their dimensions. Working by trial and error, I cut it down to <500 characters, breaking at a para-break and putting the rest on my clipboard. I post, reply, and add the next item in the thread until it's all done.

I have not written any code (10s of thousands of lines of story, tho) since retiring 1½ years ago. I think a JavaScript program to chunk down paragraphs of an essay to <500 character "stanzas*, and adding the Long Thread / would be a modest task. Injecting each into a web mastodon input element would require some thought. Hopefully the devs named the div or form field consistently. I shall discuss this with my former project manager (also retired) to scope it out when I visit in a month or so.

I designed the same thing for my own experimental Twitter UI years before they implemented theirs. Improving it by automatically moving overflowing paragraphs to the new form would make it pretty good actually.

Despite flaws, it is way more than Mastodon supports natively. It's on my todo list to see if it actually works.

Days later, he was dead—and his invention disappeared. But Meyer wasn't the only one. There’s a federal law, still active today, that allows the U.S. government to classify and bury private inventions deemed a “threat.” It's called the Invention Secrecy Act—and it's already been used over 6,000 times.

P2P file-sharing networks are more stable than torrents. DarkMX has a very slick retro interface. It is almost identical to the old WinMX from 20+ years ago, except it brokers all connections via TOR for preserving privacy.

I figured out several ways to run DarkMX on a headless server without GUI. This allows me to install it on a remote server without any desktop environment and run the software as a daemon without the GUI.

First I used the X forwarding feature of SSH to pipe the GUI to a local machine. On that machine I did all the configuration inside the GUI. Then I closed the program.

Then on the remote machine I used 'xvfb' to run DarkMX as a nohup'd daemon with a dummy GUI buffer. That way I don't need to be connected to the GUI from a local machine and the application will still run. It also uses less RAM without the GUI.

There are other ways to do this, such as VNC and xpra. I just chose the quickest, dirtiest method in this case.

Well, I don't need to, but there are some people who might need to publish while maintaining strict anonymity. So they would need tools like DarkMX and TOR. For me it's just fun.

DarkMX operates over the TOR privacy preserving network. As a result the location of my peer is hidden and extremely hard to impossible for an adversary to locate. So when I publish something, such as a letter, or paper, or opinion, anyone can download it since censoring it is not viable. It ensures that my speech remains free and available to the general public. Now when I author essays, papers, homiles and such, I can publish them as file shares, and I can publish them simultaneously as a TOR hidden website with the built-in webserver feature. So readers don't need DarkMX to read my files--they can just fire up TOR Browser or use a TOR proxy with their web browser. If they want to snarf a whole directory they can install DarkMX, or use a script to snarf them via TOR.

There are less servers and RKN sometimes breaks KAD network.

Also it almost never downloads fake files anymore like in the past when you downloaded Grey's Anatomy and it turned out to be something from Brazzers :)

Perhaps it may work with torsocks or proxychains or socat.

It is F2F instead of P2P. You have to invite people to join your network. This can be a big upside for security but would usually mean less files to find. RetroShare also has built-in messaging and forums.

I find the content there often leans more towards music and sounds rather than movies and TV, but it does still function. Depending on what you are looking for it might work out well for ya. I do run in to the occasional wanker, but you're going to find that on any P2P network right?

Debian removed some p2p stuff. I think some might still be in testing repo but some they took out completely. It seems like there was a thrust in open source to sandbag p2p networks to help push people into using server-based services.

If you spray a final fine coat of the colour to be masked, over the masking then any masking errors will be filled with the correct colour. EDIT.. doh... realised this was probably not sprayed white rather that was the base colour.

After attempting to escape and being treated for dehydration with fluids and electrolytes, the study reports, he was able to explain that he had put himself on a super-restrictive diet in which he attempted to completely eliminate salt. He had been replacing all the salt in his food with sodium bromide, a controlled substance that is often used as a dog anticonvulsant.

Inspired by his history of studying nutrition in college, he decided to conduct a personal experiment to eliminate chloride from his diet,” the case study reads. “For 3 months, he had replaced sodium chloride with sodium bromide obtained from the internet after consultation with ChatGPT, in which he had read that chloride can be swapped with bromide, though likely for other purposes, such as cleaning.”"
