Hexlish is a legible, sixteen-letter alphabet for writing the English language and for encoding text as legible base 16 or compressed binary. Texts composed using the alphabet are automatically compressed by exactly fifty percent when converted from Hexlish characters into binary characters. Although technically lossy, this syntactic compression enables recovery of the correct English letters via syntactic reconstruction. The implementer can predict the size of the compressed binary file and the size of the text that will result from decompression. Generally it is intuitive to recognize English alphabet analogues to Hexlish words. This makes Hexlish a legible alternative to the standard hexadecimal alphabet.

https://codeberg.org/OCTADE/goldilocker
Goldilocker is a brain wallet application for generating ED448 encryption and signing keys via OpenSSL.
Encryption keys may be stored offline as a complex passphrase or a seed phrase generated from the BIP39 word list.
https://codeberg.org/OCTADE/keystrike
KEYSTRIKE generates very, very random seeds that are truly random.
KEYSTRIKE uses /dev/urandom and several TRNG mixing techniques:
keystroke timestamps, doubling and shuffling, modulus and size
truncating.
The final output is a whitened, true random and pseudo-random mix.
https://codeberg.org/OCTADE/megarand
MEGARAND employs extreme overkill in the genration of a very large entropy pool. The output is extremely random as a result of several hashing, timestamping, shuffling, encrypting, and truncation techniques. MEGARAND is useful for generating large seed bases for key and passphrase material or for feeding to cryptographically secure PRNG software if high-speed outputs are required.

I guess I was lucky that I had already changed over to newpipe when youtube started with shorts, so I never experienced the brainrot in the first place :p
@sotolf @amin @joel @joel @dm @thedoctor @pixx @mirabilos @twizzay @orbitalmartian @adamsdesk @krafter
some of them are interesting, when you're looking specifically for short-form content*, but yeah, SO much brainrot out there.
*Remember when YouTube videos could only be up 10 ten minutes long? Pepperidge Farm remembers.
@rl_dane @amin @joel @joel @dm @thedoctor @pixx @mirabilos @twizzay @orbitalmartian @adamsdesk @krafter
I don't really look for short form content, I think it's really abnormal if something I have downloaded is shorter than 30 min :p
But then again I'm used to listening to long ass podcasts, I think the record was the ~16 hour long "into the aether" episode, followed by one 8 hour playthrough of "The dame was loaded" by stay forever, and a 6 hour podcast discussing 1000xRESIST :p
@sotolf @amin @joel @joel @dm @thedoctor @pixx @mirabilos @twizzay @orbitalmartian @adamsdesk @krafter
I've listened to 9-hour audio before, but it was a supercut of probably 9 1-hour-long sessions, and I didn't listen to it in one sitting.
until loops comes around, most of the short-form content I consume is gifs.
All the short videos I see tend to come through algorithm social sites like tiktok and I only ever view those through yt-dlp.
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
Just FYI, mpv will work with yt-dlp, so you can just give it a URL, and you don't have to download/save it first.
But if you want to jump forward a lot, then definitely download it first.
Also, I signed up for Loops, but flubbed my email address. I don't want to give up my RL_Dane userid, but I could never get the loops account or dansup to respond, so oh well. XD
Besides, I was hoping it to be something genuine like Beme of old, but it seems to be mostly a re-hashing of "TackyTick" brainrot, from what little I've seen of it.
Yeah, I've heard of the mpv trick but never found a need to implement it.
I don't view any video site frequently enough.
Most of the time I'm using yt-dlp for tiktok I am doing it from my phone shelled into one of my servers and then using another client like sftp or webdav to view the file before immediately deleting it. lol
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor
nerdiness++;
@thedoctor @orbitalmartian @dm @adamsdesk @twizzay @pixx @rl_dane @joel @krafter @sotolf @joel @amin ++nerdiness; to avoid the CFrustFrust copy constructor, please!
(but seriously, please omit me from the subthread)
@mirabilos @thedoctor @orbitalmartian @dm @adamsdesk @twizzay @pixx @joel @krafter @sotolf @joel @amin
(Sorry, I've been removing you from my replies to the thread since I read your original request).
I thought the only difference between ++foo; and foo++; was that putting the increment operator before incremented it before evaluating the statement, something like:
int x=0;
printf( "%d\n", x++ );
/* prints "0" and then increments, while... */
int x=0;
printf( "%d\n", ++x );
/* increments x to 1 and then prints "1" */
@rl_dane @mirabilos @thedoctor @orbitalmartian @dm @adamsdesk @twizzay @joel@polymaths.social @krafter @sotolf @joel@fosstodon.org @amin but your usage of printf shows you're thinking in the wrong language lol
@pixx @mirabilos @thedoctor @orbitalmartian @dm @adamsdesk @twizzay @joel @krafter @sotolf @joel @amin
Why, isn't the increment operator standard C?
@pixx @mirabilos @thedoctor @orbitalmartian @dm @adamsdesk @twizzay @joel @krafter @sotolf @joel @amin
Or did a bashism sneak into my syntax unawares? ;)
@twizzay @orbitalmartian @thedoctor @joel @sotolf @adamsdesk @dm @krafter @joel @rl_dane @pixx @amin in CFrustFrust, if x is an object, ++x calls its increment operator, while x++ makes a copy of x, increments the copy, then returns (expressions have a value even if ignored) the original x, and then copies or moves back the incremented object to x. (Don’t nail me on details or terminology, I don’t speak CFrustFrust.)
@mirabilos @twizzay @orbitalmartian @thedoctor @joel @sotolf @adamsdesk @dm @krafter @joel @pixx @amin
That sounds... painful. ;)
@rl_dane @mirabilos @thedoctor @orbitalmartian @dm @adamsdesk @twizzay @pixx @joel @krafter @joel @amin yeah, but in c++ you can bind operators, so it can do whatever :p
@sotolf @mirabilos @thedoctor @orbitalmartian @dm @adamsdesk @twizzay @pixx @joel @krafter @joel @amin
Is that like operator overloading? C already had that.
(This cat actually read the K&R book... 30 years ago
)
@rl_dane @sotolf @thedoctor @orbitalmartian @dm @adamsdesk @twizzay @pixx @joel @krafter @joel @amin … uhm, no, C does not currently have operator overloading.
@mirabilos @sotolf @thedoctor @orbitalmartian @dm @adamsdesk @twizzay @pixx @joel @krafter @joel @amin
Huh! I must have been getting my C and C++ confused (don't shoot! lol)
In fairness, I studied both languages maybe four years apart in the 90s.
you can wat
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @thedoctor @mirabilos you can basically bind any function to an operator, which of course means you can make some delightfully obfuscated code, if you're evil :p
@sotolf @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @thedoctor @mirabilos
...hence quines and whatchamacallit, the thing where a single text file can be executed/compiled in multiple languages.
sweet mercy. and you will not be arrested for this?
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel@fosstodon.org @amin @dm @joel@polymaths.social @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos operator overloading isn't inherently bad.
I used to hate it, but realized after a few years that that was just cuz C++ operator overloading is ridiculous.
Operator overloading can be really good for maths-heavy code (adding points, vectors, even lets you do custom number formats!), it's just that C++ is very loose with what counts as an "operator" and.. eugh, I'm not going to keep talking about C++, this conversation is over. xD
@pixx @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @amin @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @thedoctor @mirabilos Yeah, I know, you can use it to do really nice things, I often use it for things like coordinates etc. you just can do some utterly bonkers things if you really put your mind to it :) One of my favourite languages lets me do almost whatever I want, and some times I have to watch myself and remind me to not be "clever" :p
@sotolf @pixx @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @amin @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @thedoctor @mirabilos
Sounds a bit like Perl. I know you're probably not talking about Perl, but it makes me think of #Perl. ;)
@rl_dane @mirabilos @thedoctor @orbitalmartian @dm @adamsdesk @twizzay @pixx @joel @krafter @sotolf @joel
That's how it works in PHP, at least.
@rl_dane @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel@fosstodon.org @amin @dm @joel@polymaths.social @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos it's even better with qutebrowser. You can configure it so that opening a youtube video link will invoke a script with that name, so there's script published somewhere which APPENDS IT TO MPV'S QUEUE
so like
You can search for a musician
spend ten seconds key mashing
and have multiple hours of music queued :)
@pixx @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @amin @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor
IF ONLY Qt still had a webkit backend. I think Qutebrowser is great, but I avoid Blink as much as I can.
How ironic that KDE gave us Konqueror which was forked to WebKit, and now there's no viable path to WebKit from within Qt. :(((((
@rl_dane @pixx @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor
I don't think the change was motivated by the lack of such a backend; it had just gained a ton of security issues. Pretty sure you can still set the backend to webkit, but there's big warnings about security issues with that.
@amin @pixx @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor
But isn't that basically just because it's not maintained?
@rl_dane @pixx @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor
I don't recall the details, it was a long time ago.
@pixx @rl_dane @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor
Yeah, it totally rocks. Qutebrowser forever!
@pixx @rl_dane @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor
(btw for someone who wants to open a bunch of links in qutebrowser, ;r will let you keep selecting links repeatedly until you press escape)
I usually never keep them because it doesn't make sense to me to use my disks to store so much hollow stuff.
The most annoying form of content in this world is content that I can tell has been engineered to produce a desire for more content.
It's like the Potato Chip of content. Only there to make you want more of it.
It's embarassing to me to see what people/companies will do for "followers"
@twizzay @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
Great analogy. I remember being at a party with family and friends where we had all kinds of amazing cheeses like Brie and Camambert, and someone brought a big bag of cheetos puffs.
Guess what this wannabe Bougie guy loved the best? The Cheetos.
That really shook me. XD
Whatever happened to people/companies just doing stuff that they liked/believed in?
We used to go out and do something because it was something we wanted to do and along the way we'd sometimes find people who wanted to join us.
Now, it feels like the first thing people think about whenever they make anything is "who is going to want it?"
C'mon dawg! Do you even want it? Just go create something new!
Sometimes it feels like society is just chasing its own tail. I miss the days when word-of-mouth was the most valued form of publicity, as opposed to word-of-algorithms.
@twizzay @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
It's all about the rubberducken shareholders.
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @thedoctor @mirabilos
It can be explained in one word. Capitalism
@sotolf @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @thedoctor @mirabilos
s/\(C\)\(apitalism\)/\1r\2/g
idk. I hear this a lot.
I thought capitalism was founded on the idea of fostering mutually beneficial relationships of trade with people.
Somewhere along the way, we got sucked into this ideology of "make that number go up". Everything became a game of moneyball. People started focusing on hijacking eachothers responses more than just trying to befriend one another.
Sometimes I think if we switched to another economical method it might help things, but I usually come back to the opinion that the people running the systems are more broken than the systems themselves.
These days, I'm not convinced that any sort of economic mode could fix the broken soul of this world. It's going to have to be something else.
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
I don't think capitalism was ever meant to be mutually-beneficial. That may be the apologia, but that's absolutely not the motive or reality.
In short, "You're very clever, young man, but it's mindless plunder all the way down."
@pixx @joel @thedoctor @twizzay @sotolf @orbitalmartian @dm @amin @adamsdesk @rl_dane @krafter @joel @mirabilos free market capitalism and conservatism finds its origins in attempts to preserve the aristocracy and maybe the monarchy during the age of revolution in 19th century Europe. John Stuart Mills is pretty explicit, it wasn’t like, a secret aim of their project.
Sorry everyone. I guess I turnt up my cynic knob in my sleep last night.

@rl_dane @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor

Updated! Seems to be the same content, though.
My life/internet balance used to be engineered on the idea of "no notifications ever"
But, then as I got ready to endure Didney Worl I went through all the mobile ActivityPub clients in the IOS app store again and found Mona for IOS and was like "dang fedi client apps have come so far"
And so for the last month I have been using that, and I love it. There are still missing features for pleromers
but, it gets the bulk of things.
My fedi consumption has definitely increased over the holidays. Today is my first day "back at work" so, trying to manage my attention with it better now.
I'll admit making the legendary quest my sole source of asynchronous sociality has been one of the healthier internet choices I think I've made.
Constantly glad that I have been able to stay out of the youtube gravity hole for as long as I have.

and then I realized
no, that's stupid
I'm enjoying talking to friends and if they wanna spam me with likes and messages _that's fine_)
I guess I can't speak for the larger Fedi. But, I for sure want to keep you around.
So, you get a ⭐ from me.
It's all about balance for me. I'll keep notifications off if I can tell that it's hijacking my IRL relationships.
I'll turn them back on if I start feeling like I'm missing my friends. That feeling is usually my indicator that I have been too distant with someone.
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @thedoctor @mirabilos I basically just check in when I miss you guys :)

Tbh I just never have notifications on, and check them whenever I hop on fedi

I kinda depend on yall to remind me that I am still very cool indeed.

@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
sigh, I have like... one IRL friend that I count as a true friend in this city?
Add to that some warm family friends and a handful of guys I go to church with that are great guys, but who occasionally say absolute apeshit republican things that make me want to get chelation done on my soul.
I'd say that's pretty good actually.
I've moved around so much over the years that my friends kinda come and go like the wind.
My wife and I were in a pretty sweet dungeons and dragons + doggos group a few years back. There was like 6 of us and we were almost all in the same exact boat. I miss those days quite a bit.
One time we all got together and watched the superbowl and fast forwarded through the game so we could make fun of the ads together. Man, those were good times.
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos

people you can physically meet with atleast once a month and share atleast a few mutually invested conversations with.
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel@fosstodon.org @amin @dm @fbievan @joel@polymaths.social @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos So if I hung out with them IRL for years but now it's only once or twice a year they're no longer an irl friend? :P
@pixx @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @amin @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
Maybe not? I kinda indirectly told a majority of my IRL friends to eff off in 2018 because of Trump.
An act that I'm saddened by, have still not really recovered from, but would would probably repeat if I had to do it all over again. :(
I have learned (rather painfully) in the last couple years that there's really no going home.
eeeeeeeee. I'm going by my own definition. I've got kind of a twisted story with many of my irl friendships.
I basically don't believe in 'best friends forever'. If a relationship is stale and not being maintained, then I basically recategorize it back to 'acquaintances' and move along. No harm done to me.
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
Ouch ouch ouch. That one smarts.
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel@fosstodon.org @amin @dm @fbievan @joel@polymaths.social @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos I like this.
I've friends I fell out of touch with for a while, some of whom I've done okay at reconnecting with, others I haven't. It's definitely mostly my fault; I lost two close friends because I didn't prioritize them for a few months and, well, I have to live with that.
Others, I fell out of touch with for a while, and I or they reached out and we got close again. More of a sleeping friendship than one that's gone.
And, someone I talked to semi-frequently but not super deeply is now one of my closest friends, and that's happened before.
Relationships can grow and shrink, it's up to the people involved :)
Yep. Sometimes there is an unsaid agreement that both parties have moved on. When I was younger I would sometimes feel like I had to keep those kinds of relationships alive for old times sake.
Now, I am happy to accept them for the brief thing that they were and think back fondly on them. If paths cross again and we mutually find interest in eachother again great. If not, I'll be grateful for what I had.
I had 1 or 2 friendships that deeply changed who I am. I haven't reconnected with one of them in years but I still think about and dream about them frequently. It's one of those weird relationships where the friendship meant way more to me than it ever meant to them. So, coming back to it would just feel awkward for them and a big let down for me.
I am happy leaving it where it is. Keeping it as the jewel it was in the past is better than trying to dig around it to see if there's more.
Relationships that only exist in my mind still have a certain realness about them i guess. It's sort of a magical thing that's hard to explain.
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor
> It's one of those weird relationships where the friendship meant way more to me than it ever meant to them...
Ouch, been there.
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel@fosstodon.org @amin @dm @fbievan @joel@polymaths.social @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos I... yeah. I get that completely.
I have a few friendships that _regularly_ lapse, and like... mm.
The one issue I have with > Sometimes there is an unsaid agreement that both parties have moved on.
is that there have been multiple times where I've thought someone else lost interest and they thought I lost interest, so it can be hard to tell!
Probably the exception, though?
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel@fosstodon.org @amin @dm @fbievan @joel@polymaths.social @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos Fun story: I fell out of touch with a friend for almost a year because I thought she didn't want to talk to me anymore, and I stopped reaching out after a few months because I thought I was bothering her.
Out of nowhere like eight months later she texted me a giant apology because she hadn't checked the account in a year and wanted to catch up 😅
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel@fosstodon.org @amin @dm @fbievan @joel@polymaths.social @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos Like... the worst part is, I considered just _texting_ her at one point, and didn't _because I thought she wasn't interested_ (we'd been chatting on discord, because we met at a music festival and were chatting on a related channel for a while).
But she made it pretty clear afterwards that she was just overwhelmed cuz life going on (and hers is possibly the hardest life I've ever known, and that's a really, really, really high bar.) and if I'd texted her she would have been happy to talk.
@pixx @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @amin @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor
> ...(and hers is possibly the hardest life I've ever known, and that's a really, really, really high bar.)...
Daaaaaaaaang.
Who here has the fortitude to except the harsh disappointment of rejection every time they try to rekindle an old friendship.
Humans are complex. Relationships are more difficult to navigate than entire galaxies.
Maybe someday we'll find a way after we have achieved a perfect language we can communicate to eachother with.
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel@fosstodon.org @amin @dm @fbievan @joel@polymaths.social @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos mm, it's not language, imo, at all.
People not talking can not be understood no matter what language their thoughts are in.

@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel@fosstodon.org @amin @dm @fbievan @joel@polymaths.social @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos That simply cannot be, for silence speaks volumes :)
@pixx @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
Y'all are pushing my COMM nerdery buttons so hard here! I love it. XD
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
Yeah, once they move fourteen time zones away keeping in touch gets difficult.
There is one dude out here in the styx where I live that is close to my age in my circle of influence. We don't have much in common and our friendship wanes when I feel like he's trying to 'fix' me and my issues.
Don't get me wrong. Good guy. But, friendships with me are about the laughs and the chill. Often it feels like he wants to get together because he thinks it will benefit me somehow. idk it's weird. I don't think I am in need of his help and so that provides a level of awkwardness.
Y'all are basically my main resource for friendships. So, yeah. You're all very very lit folks.
um. bravo.
@twizzay @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos

People who "see everything as a nail" can be trying. I'm pretty sure I've been that guy in years past.
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
Ah, okay, I don't have any of those. Other than my roommate, I guess.
@amin @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
Has our entire generation* just lost the ability to be social offline?
*Generation here referring to the entire crowd of people alive at one time, not people born within a roughly 20-year span of time
@pixx @amin @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
This generation. As in, everyone alive at this moment.
@rl_dane @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
Oh, there are plenty people I'm social with. I'd maybe call them friends, but we don't tend to have many actual deep conversations.
TCKs tend to either try and dive into deep relationships really quickly or be very cautious about them. I fall in the latter category.
@rl_dane @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
And most others around me my age do have a lot of IRL friends. I've never been very skilled at that or had much desire for, though.
@rl_dane @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
Well, since entering college, at least. I made a lot of friends in middle school and highschool. I guess knowing I'll only be here 3.5 years dampens my desire to make connections.
@amin @rl_dane @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
tbh half the time i hang out with friends at my house we end up like watching TV while eating or some shit lol (usually while building something)
either that or talking a walk outside
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
You guys also probably have more irl friends than I do.
I probably don't. <3
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
Unless you count all my "IRL" friends who no longer live in the same country as me.
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
Well, if that's gonna happen you'd better hurry; I will probably have vacated the nation by the end of 2025.
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
(I graduate in December. If I stay around longer, it'll only be to wait until plane tickets get cheaper.)
Lets all go to #DidneyWorl instead
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
Been there and have zero desire to go again.
Though that may be partly bad memories from my flight there being delayed seven hours after we'd already boarded.
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
Haha, yeah I remember reading some of your posts. XD
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
I would pay good money to see that.
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
Man, #ToyStory 1 really was just starting to explore the near ledge of the uncanny valley, wasn't it?
@mirabilos @adamsdesk @krafter @joel @pixx @sotolf @orbitalmartian @dm @joel @twizzay @amin @fbievan @thedoctor
How is it all my blost toots turn into #hellthreads?!?
(not all, but so many)
@rl_dane @mirabilos @adamsdesk @krafter @pixx @sotolf @orbitalmartian @dm @joel @twizzay @amin @fbievan @thedoctor that happens when u decide to @ every person that would have seen your post anyway
@joel @mirabilos @adamsdesk @krafter @pixx @sotolf @orbitalmartian @dm @joel @twizzay @amin @fbievan @thedoctor
Gotta appease my internal, ADHD-tortured, socially-awkward introvert attention ho.
@twizzay @amin @dm @mirabilos @thedoctor @krafter @sotolf @joel @fbievan @orbitalmartian @joel @adamsdesk @rl_dane @pixx too many friends.
@spaceraser @twizzay @amin @dm @thedoctor @krafter @sotolf @joel @fbievan @orbitalmartian @joel @adamsdesk @pixx
I wish I had too many friends IRL, but y'all are pretty nice nonetheless. <3
If I have more than 3 IRL friends then I start to question how good my friendships with the people actually are.
I like small circles. ⭕
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @spaceraser @thedoctor
Move to Dallas. I'll be all up in yo face.
"YO BESTIE WHADDAP!?!?!??"
If you know someone who is hiring I will legit do that.
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @spaceraser @thedoctor
Man, I have no idea how to navigate the modern heckscape of AI crap, fake postings, clueless "recruiters," but I know there are usually lots of jobs in the Dallas area.
@adamsdesk @krafter @twizzay @dm @amin @joel @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @pixx @thedoctor @sotolf @fbievan @joel yeah but then you’d have to live in Texas.
@amin @spaceraser @adamsdesk @krafter @twizzay @dm @joel @orbitalmartian @pixx @thedoctor @sotolf @fbievan @joel
I can think of far worse places to live in the United States.
@rl_dane @spaceraser @adamsdesk @krafter @twizzay @dm @joel @orbitalmartian @pixx @thedoctor @sotolf @fbievan @joel
Sure, but that doesn't make it a good place.
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @sotolf @spaceraser @thedoctor
There's no shame in having friendships of different depths. Not everyone has to be BFFs.
@rl_dane @spaceraser @twizzay @dm @thedoctor @krafter @sotolf @joel @fbievan @orbitalmartian @joel @adamsdesk @pixx
I don't know, pocket friends are easier to put aside when I desperately need some alone time. While last night I had to go to a New Year's party, despite being very socially drained.
Too many friends with shared friends.
Also twizz took some time off this week and basically spent it stirring different pots online.
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @spaceraser @thedoctor @mirabilos
We always need more Twizz on our lives.
Y'all just wait until I achieve paid time off.
You won't know what hit you
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @spaceraser @thedoctor @mirabilos I have 60 days that I haven't used yet :p
@sotolf @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @spaceraser @thedoctor @mirabilos
I'm guessing you don't lose them at the end of the year?
@rl_dane @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @spaceraser @thedoctor @mirabilos I can bring up to 60 into the new year :) they want me to take more free time, though every time I want to go earlier I'm held up with something.
@sotolf @rl_dane @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @spaceraser @thedoctor @mirabilos
Yeah, haha I'm remembering your tales of times you've taken vacation time only to be called back in for an emergency.
@rl_dane @adamsdesk @krafter @joel @pixx @sotolf @orbitalmartian @dm @joel @twizzay @fbievan @thedoctor
Because you mention a ton of people and the implicit social expectation is that when you get cc'ed in a blog post, you leave a reply of some sort. Those replies, combined with the number of mentions, provide fertile ground from which a hellthread can sprout.
@amin @adamsdesk @krafter @joel @pixx @sotolf @orbitalmartian @dm @joel @twizzay @fbievan @thedoctor
If the mentions are obnoxious, I'll stop.
I just like the conversations.
@rl_dane @adamsdesk @krafter @joel @pixx @sotolf @orbitalmartian @dm @joel @twizzay @fbievan @thedoctor
I don't mind them personally, most of the time.
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos

@pixx @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos

Dude, let's do lunch!!!
@pixx @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @amin @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor
Just to be clear, I'm dead serious.
I will buy you lunch. Just tell me when you're coming.
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
I'm gonna be sad if I don't get a chance to go to lunch with Amin before he nopes right outta 'MURICA.
I mean, meeting up in Malaysia and enjoying gastrocationing there would be better, but air faire is no joke.
Mmmmm… gastrocations
@rl_dane @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
We'll need to figure something out.
@amin @joel @rl_dane @thedoctor @fbievan @orbitalmartian @dm @krafter @joel @twizzay @pixx @adamsdesk @sotolf I’m actually glad GotoSocial has no notification support but had to find out how to disable them in FediText anyway due to my backup account having them.
I just check the notification tab when needed.
@mirabilos @amin @joel @thedoctor @fbievan @orbitalmartian @dm @krafter @joel @twizzay @pixx @adamsdesk @sotolf
I don't use notifications, either. I mean, notifications within the app, but never on the OS/phone level.
@fbievan @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @thedoctor @mirabilos Yeah, I've had a 90% muted phone, still have to let it ring when I'm on call, and for people in my phonebook, everything else is muted.
@sotolf @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @thedoctor @mirabilos
Yeah— my text messages (SMS), matrix DMs, direct call (from phone), and Signal messages take priority and therefore have notifications...
@fbievan @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @thedoctor @mirabilos I have all of those muted, people shouldn't be able to disturb me whenever they want to.
@sotolf @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @thedoctor @mirabilos
Thing is people just dont disturb me (very few people have those methods)...
And a lot of the time my phone is just on DND... Meaning those notifications just are a "check this"... I rarely have my phone not on mute
@sotolf @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @thedoctor @mirabilos
People IRL get frustrated because I don't pick up their calls, but who fucking cares its my phone and my life... I do not want to be disturbed by you on a daily basis
@fbievan @sotolf @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @thedoctor @mirabilos
99th percentile introvert mood, right there ;)
I kinda hate phone calls, to be honest.
@sotolf @fbievan @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel@fosstodon.org @pixx @amin @dm @joel@polymaths.social @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @thedoctor @mirabilos
I have two phones:
A basic phone that rings that I only carry when I'm going out or expecting a call.
A muted phone with vibrate for important stuff, and notifications turned off for everything else, that I carry all the time
Do you also have two phone numbers then? That sounds like a lot of friction for contacts.
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel@fosstodon.org @pixx @amin @dm @fbievan @joel@polymaths.social @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
Two phone numbers, yes.
But it's OK, because no one has either ;)
I have two phone numbers too. One of them is just a twilio number that I give to hotels, insurance agents, car salesman and anyone else who is an entity of a business and not a family or friend.
One phone though.
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @OpenComputeDesign @pixx @amin @dm @fbievan @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor
Hmm! Is Twilio like Line2? Does it do SMS as well?
I'd love to port my cell number to a VOIP service (that does good SMS/MMS and gives you viewable backups of them) and just use my personal phone number for basically data only.
@fbievan @sotolf @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @thedoctor @mirabilos
I let those have notifications but I don't allow anything to have notification sounds.
Well, that just makes me feel all fuzzy inside.
@twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
Don't eat lint when you clean it out of the dryer. Instead I recommend throwing it away.
@amin @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
Honestly, I've seen way worse from Five Minute Crafts.
@amin @twizzay @joel @pixx @dm @joel@polymaths.social @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos Lint a great fire starter 😉
@adamsdesk @twizzay @joel @pixx @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @rl_dane @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
I first read “conversation starter”
'dopamine dispenser'Good verbiage. I don't see it as a toxic angle. The brain wants variety, change, interaction, etc. so this is accurate even though simplistic.
@octade @pixx @amin @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
The problem is that the brain isn't just craving dopamine, it's craving the things that BRING dopamine: relationship, connection, meaningfulness, challenge.
YT shorts brings none of those things, just the positive side effects, and only while you're passively gazing at the screen.
In shorts (XD), it's horrible.
@rl_dane @octade @pixx @amin @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @thedoctor @mirabilos I still think there are good things about some of them, companionship in letsplays and reaction clips, not the good stuff, but it's at least a faximile, and some times it's all the social interaction that I can tackle when my social batteries are close to empty. That and podcasts are what keeps me going at times, and it's better than being empty and depressed, so it's something, I'm not a person that needs a lot, but yeah no, that's how it is I guess.
@amin @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
It is a dysfunction, for certain.
@amin @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
I mean, it's not like I have a conscious thought of, "Oh hey, I wonder what vapid inanities the shorts crowd have for me today!"
It's more like, "Dopamine is at zero. I'd take a nap for the rest of the day, but I'm not sleepy, and those overnapping naps usually feel horrible and nightmarish. I'd read or study or watch TV or cruise the fedi, but the dopamine is way too low for that, and my apathy has apathy.
MUST NUMB THE BRAINHURT... shorts it is.
That's pretty much where it's at.
@joel @adamsdesk @sotolf @joel @rl_dane @pixx @amin @twizzay @krafter @thedoctor @dm @orbitalmartian just edit the URL, change the part before the video ID to youtube.com/watch?v= and delete everything after. Boom, short in normal, less braindead, player.
Or use yt-dlp and mplayer.
@mirabilos @joel @adamsdesk @sotolf @joel @rl_dane @pixx @amin @twizzay @krafter @thedoctor @dm @orbitalmartian I have a Bash alias for yt-show that sets up downloading a show and its subtitles because I use it so often. Another one for yt-music.
@dmoonfire @mirabilos @joel @adamsdesk @sotolf @joel @pixx @amin @twizzay @krafter @thedoctor @dm @orbitalmartian
I have a couple scripts, one that searches my invidious instance of choice for the actual videos, and another that queues up mpv and sends some pertinent options to yt-dlp through mpv, such as to limit the resolution of the video being downloaded for smaller screens (mainly for performance reasons, as my lower-res devices are generally slower)
@rl_dane @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel@fosstodon.org @pixx @amin @dm @joel@polymaths.social @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos That's one of many reasons I use #AndStatus as my primary client on Android for all my 'verse accounts.
@fuat2mb @twizzay @adamsdesk @joel @pixx @amin @dm @joel @krafter @orbitalmartian @sotolf @thedoctor @mirabilos
Huh, I actually hadn't heard of that one before.
#RSS feeds are the best! People who take the time to publish a web site usually are more thoughtful with their words.
Thanks for sharing this list. Also I would like to give a shout out to the app, #QuiteRSS which runs great on Linux.
Honored to see five of those feeds you follow are from my sites. XD
It's not my fault you feel the need to have <way> more than one blog.
Two of those aren't blogs, but I take the point. ;)
I'm planning to consolidate a bit in my upcoming site redesign. Well, kinda: I'll split into a bunch of subcategories but have a unified feed as an option for the ones on my personal site.

I forgot the word for the largest amount of data a cipher can handle and still be safe. #cryptography #cipher #cryptanalysis
This is not to be confused with 'cryptoperiod' or 'key period' or 'key time domain' which refers to the time a key is valid.
The 'period' refers to the length of the cipher stream or generator stream before it repeats from the initial keying or initialization state. Some ciphers may be considered unsafe before reaching this generator period for other reasons, such as mode mixing.
For example we might say the generator period is 2^155337 which means after generating that much data the stream would cycle back to its initial values. If the amount of data fed into the cipher stream exceeds the period then security is compromised (theoretically, in practice it might be unnoticed by an attacker).
Last I checked AES has a period of something like 2^39 - 256 for the same key. Your key schedule should be automatically handling that anyway to a much smaller limit.
The cipher period limitation may be referred to as:
'maximum safe ciphertext length' or 'maximum safe message size'

The Court ruled unhoused people have #privacy rights in their homes protected by Article 1, section 7 of Washington’s #Constitution. The Court explained that “denying Ream and Kitcheon any protected privacy in their homes would be yet one more permission slip to consider them not fully human.”
The Court found the rules underlying the City’s #sweeps policy were #unconstitutional because they covered people and property who were not true obstructions. Absent actual hazards, removal requires notice, offer of alternative locations or shelter, and an opportunity to determine whether personal property was taken and how to get it back.
the #Court also held the City of Seattle’s sweeps policy constituted cruel punishment under Article 1, section 14 of #Washington’s Constitution in some circumstances because the sweeps subject the #unhoused to #criminal and #civil penalties for living on public land when there is no alternative to do so.
There is no such thing as 'public land'. This is a legal fiction invented to force people to rent or take out mortgages just to have a place to live. It is part of the agenda of forcing people to participate in the monetary economy just to survive.
Happy New Year everyone! Last perfect square for a while, beautiful that (1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9)²=9³+8³+7³+6³+5³+4³+3³+2³+1³=2025
But you know what's more perfect and meaningful? All of you out there. There'll be other square years, even the representation is kind of arbitrary, but there will never again be the configuration of human beings on this planet that there is now. Be safe, and remember it's a sin not to take pleasure when you can.
And it harm none, so mote it be.

The remarkable little Toyota Sports 800 was in production from 1965-69, and was the company's first model of its kind. The advanced body, styled by Shozo Sato, featured an early production example of the targa-top roof. It was always a rare car, with reportedly some 3,131 built by the time of its demise in 1969. Quite a few were sold to US military personnel in bases on the island of Okinawa. Lightweight construction and good aerodynamics maximised performance from the 790cc 45bhp engine.
Though I guess a legitimate case for safety is if someone does a lot of posting on followers-only, in which case by accepting a follow they're including you into a more private circle. The problem there is that ActivityPub really doesn't work well on that model. From what I remember of the specs, it could very smoothly handle group visibility, but since the protocol requires software to push notifications rather than just having it up for others to pull (i.e. RSS), having followers be the only group someone can address separately breaks a number of assumptions the designers made.
@octade
I guess they have experiences that made them more guarded?
If it's too much for you to state your motives, just ignore and move on?
Question: I tried to connect my Ubuntu-laptop to my Sony bluetooth speaker, but the laptop doesn't recognize / see the speaker. It used to work with older Ubuntu versions. But not with Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS
The problem is not with the speaker, as it works with my phone.
Any ideas?
RT's welcome!
@Kletskous According to this gitlab there is a problem in the BSD license used by FDK-AAC, which is what is needed for bluetooth audio. The license issue is why it is not included in Ubuntu 24.04. There are also instructions here on how to fix it, although it is a bit technical: https://gitlab.com/brlin/aac-bluetooth-audio-codec-on-ubuntu-2404
@RandamuMaki Thanks but I wonder if this is the issue, because my laptop can connect to another bluetooth speaker.
@Kletskous I'm not sure either, but it seemed like a promising link when I looked on DDG for your issue. Hope you get it resolved soon! :)
@RandamuMaki Thanks anyway and I will ask my husband to check it out if I can't solve it. He is a linux sysadmin/programmer.
@Kletskous did you see sound settings? Try select the right output device.
@Francehelder The speaker just does not show up under the blootooth-devices so I am not able to select it.
@Kletskous
bluetooth hardware on laptop activ? On my old thinkpad default is "OFF".
did the laptop see other bluetooth devices and can you connect?
@kklaffki yes active and can see and connect to other devices.
Try this command and post the output. That will give me some idea of what bluetooth items you have installed (don't include the '$~'.
$~ apt list | grep blue | grep installed
just copy paste this part without the quotes:
'apt list | grep blue | grep installed'
I edited it. Have a look at the edit. You are running Ubuntu, right?
You can also try: 'dpkg -l | grep blue'
It's almost always the obvious that takes the longest to discover!
@jerry1970 No, it worked before and I also can connect to another bluetooth speaker, just not the Sony anymore.
@jerry1970 No, just 3-4 years or so.
@jerry1970 Solved! As usual it was something stupid. The speaker had to be set to pairing mode... Should have started by reading the fucking manual! Thanks anyway!
Have a nice egg-free last day of 2024!
Soy-yoghurt and cake for breakfast.
Third day everything is frozen.

Is it the peak of madness to awake from a dream laughing your ass off, so much that you have a deep headache after?
My brain concocted a situation that was so funny to me that it woke me up.
To properly set the picture, earlier in my dream I was at a post-quantum cryptography contest and they had some potato dish that was kind of like a dessert but also kind of like a pierogi, but it was unpleasantly still kind of frozen, so I went to microwave it. It immediately set fire and the fire spread to the upper floors.
And then some shit happened and I was at a sales event for companies that went all in on AI.
I was seated next to someone insufferable when I noticed his phone was triggering speech-to-text a lot, sending excerpts to a Discord channel where all these Sales Techbros were hanging out. (I wasn't sure if it was a note-taking technique or a dumb attempt to eavesdrop.) They also brought their AI chatbots without restrictions.
There were over 2700 "users" in the chat; most were bots, as this event only seated about 200 people.
So, I tagged him in a meme in the channel, and after putting his phone down, asked aloud a question that contained a highly recursive prompt injection.
It was like a zip bomb, to ask every other user for code, in every programming language, that would generate its own prompt.
He laughed at the implications for a moment, then a minute later, looked down at his Discord chat as all the GPT chatpots were generating code in hundreds of languages on behalf of thousands of requesters.
"Oh noooo," he said, his voice one octave higher.
I immediately woke the fuck up after that part of the dream.
I'm sure a lot of web folk are going to say "wow you're late to the party" but the fact that the <h1> tag's text size shrinks for every <article> or <section> it's inside of, but the other tags (like <h2>) do not.
That is a *BONKERS* decision and it's apparently intentional
@JoshJers wait wat
@eniko I spent so long debugging this because I thought surely there was something fucky in my css but it's just ... like this? And it's *in the spec like this*????
I think the idea is that there's really only supposed to be one <h1> per page, and if you have them in an <article> you probably want it to be a sub-article of some sort with a smaller main title. I admit it does get a little out of hand once you nest multiple articles but that is a pretty odd use-case in which you're probably using custom CSS anyway overriding the defaults.
@JoshJers @amin @eniko I guess they didn't expect people to mix "put an H1 inside a bunch of sections" and "use decreasing H2-H6 tags" in the same page?
No idea why they wouldn't expect that, web developers will do any cursed thing you can imagine once your content's run through five people and two frameworks in four languages, but oh well
@JoshJers @amin @eniko yeah, html has always been like this, it's the one language where we say "syntax error? what the hell, let's have a go anyway" and it's because half the web is built from terrible chimeras of a dozen systems all trying to write the same document, you can't expect anything reasonable
@oscherler @andrewt @JoshJers @eniko
Yeah, haha. I tried following typographic principles to make readable.css, my classless CSS framework, but it's definitely not easy. :)
@amin @oscherler @andrewt @eniko Just wanna say that I appreciate everyone who goes through the trouble to actually make a light and dark theme (at leastusing the theme preference selector)
I just did so on my blog ( http://drilian.com ) and it's not hard as long as you're careful about how you refer to colors
(also as an added bonus it usually ends up making you use a more limited palette and not just throw color tags around willy nilly, which is better for maintainability and consistency anyhow)
@JoshJers @oscherler @andrewt @eniko
Yep! And CSS custom properties (variables) are so useful when doing so.
@JoshJers so, H1 can be used to auto-size based on context. But this technique should not be combined with other H# elements. It should have been called HV?
All they had to do with CSS is allow the developer to pack the interface the same way Tkinter figured out 25 years ago.
But nooooo ... they give us halfway measures so I end up having to mix flexbox with grid and visibility: with hidden: and whitespace with HTML escapes, and other wonky things.
To their credit, they finally rolled out custom elements without needing to use Javascript to employ them. This solves a lot of code readability pain. Good job, team HTML.
@octade whoa okay the custom elements thing is cool! Now it's just a question of how long we have to wait before people can use it for real in stuff 😄

I’m starting to think the two party system isn’t so good after all
@brendanbeebee wow this is fantastic, as in, like a fantasy. Gorgeous

The fastest way to raise everyone's pay would be to eliminate federal income taxes. The US didn't even have federal income taxes for the first hundred years, and yet it managed to get along just fine. It also didn't have handouts or pension fund Ponzi schemes, and all the better.
No income tax and no property tax frees working stiffs to focus on building something instead of just working to pay taxes.
No one ever talks about this obvious solution. The state of the economy doesn't matter if you don't have to pay taxes just to keep your house. Some people want to tax your home to force you to fund their lifestyle with the proceeds of such robbery.
@gentoobro
Soooo...which parts of the budget exactly will you cut? Will it be enough?
All the handouts, including social security and medicare, as well as the entire expeditionary military, all the alphabet agencies, and nearly all departments created after 1900, except the forest and parks services. National parks will have their fees raised to be completely self-funding, on a per-park basis and for the service as a whole. The forestry service will be funded by selling logging and grazing rights, as it currently at least partially is, except that the budget for it will be trimmed until the money raised is break-even. States will be given all federal roads inside their territory.
That should get it pretty close to the money collected from tariffs. It did before the expansion in the early 20th century.
@gentoobro
But who will replace the services they provide?
Nov 29 - heat in my rented home goes out. Notify landlord.
Dec 2 - HVAC contractor comes, provides options to landlord, who is onsite for their visit.
Landlord advises the house needs an insulation survey, earliest is 12/10.
Dec 11 - Insulation survey.
SILENCE .
Dec 22 - Landlord's husband shows up with 4 non-state-compliant wall-mounted space heaters that immediately start tripping circuit breakers and have to be shut off.
@neurovagrant ugh, that's annoying, sorry you're going through this
Dec 23 - I advise landlord of circuit breaker issue, and that my own space heaters are no longer keeping up with single-digit temps. She promises electrician. No electrician ever materializes.
Temps down to 50F in kitchen and dining room.
Dec 26 - another HVAC contractor in to quote a new system, no repairs.
Today - I tell landlord I am uncomfortable signing new 12 month lease on Jan 31. Landlord tries to profit with $350/mo upcharge.
Moving in a rush in January in Massachusetts with my disabled 78-year-old father is going to suck.
@neurovagrant Can you not report it to the state? I know here in NC you can report shitty landlords, especially when the weather is not great for the elderly.
@miri yep, totally can, and have the research etc. But there's always complications, like a bad referral, etc.
A decision nearly impossible to regret.
@neurovagrant Ouch 😩
ISPs love piracy. Youtube even loves piracy. They would be way worse off if they were held accountable for piracy on their networks or sites. Chinese manufacturers use piracy on a mass scale -- you can buy unlimited games on amazon (that weren't legally placed there). If AI companies can get away with mass piracy, they're more than happy to.
@n1k0 The ladle should be hung, the grater should be stood upright on a shelf or in a cabinet. The masher... probably just shouldn't exist.
@mtconleyuk @n1k0 I like mine slightly lumpy, so I think I prefer to just use a fork.
Mashed taters and gravy is what baby angels eat. I love plain butter champ without gravy.
I found a special tater masher that is ultra heavy duty made of metal that is thicker than the standard tater masher. I should build a shrine to it.
