OCTADE
@octade@soc.octade.net
OCTADE or OCTAD is a retro word that means either an octal digit of three bits, or an octal octet or an eight-bit byte. Thus an octade, depending on its historical use, is either 3 bits or 8 bits.
OCTADE was used to specify eight bits, as opposed to BYTE which is not necessarily eight bits as the word BYTE could signify any of several numbers of bits.
This yields the retro 1337 numbers of 38 and 83. The number 38 is one more than 37 so a bit more elite a bit cooler. Thus it owns cardinally shorter byterz.
83 mod 38 equals 7, the highest octal digit. 838 mod 383 equals 72 or 9 times 8 which is 8 squared plus 8.
8338 mod 3883 equals 572 which is 72 times 8 minus 4 or 71.5 times 8.
8383 mod 3838 equals 707 which is 88 times 8 plus 3.
I prefer the old word OCTADE to the word BYTE. OCTADE sports a Euro-peon dignity and gravitas like an Internet serf ready to surf the worknet like pwnd peons. This is very true when pronouncing OCTADE with a thick Pennsyltucky Dutch or Yinzer accent. The Bostonian pronunciation sounds like bad beginner German or muffled mumbling of 'lactate.'
OCTADE or OCTAD was also used to describe a poem of eight stanzas.
OCTADE was also used to describe a period of eight years, or two leap years.
OCTADECANAL is a pheromone found in butterflies. It is butterfly perfume. I would not wear butterfly cologne. But I would sell it. Who would buy and wear my snobby smell? With wordplay we can call it OCTADE CHANNEL No. 8 . All rights reserved, ye French odor snooties.

Why the Inquisition Built the Surveillance State
https://clairesalerno.substack.com/p/why-the-inquisition-built-the-surveillance
The real motive behind web 2.0, web 3.0, the cloud, AI, and panopticon nonsense is to identify and isolate heretics.
"They began with the network. If you can find one suspected heretic and interrogate them about their associations, who they speak to, who they share meals with, whose homes they visit and which neighbours are sympathetic, you can build a list of names."
"Then, you visit each of those people on the list and ask them the same questions. From this you can build a map of the entire community, identifying relationships and flagging suspects."[. . . . .]
"They used the social fabric of communities and rewarded those who denounced others. They reduced penalties for cooperation, and built the assumption that staying silent is itself suspicious."
"They made it so the rational choice for any individual in the community is to inform on neighbours before neighbours inform on them. This creates a self-policing community. The community does the work, with the institution as the receiving authority."
"Think about that for a moment, because it describes the current digital surveillance apparatus exactly."This is exactly how the bulk of social media and online platforms work to maintain thought control and censorship. It is following the Roman model of fascism, while pretending to denounce fascism, or vocally denouncing socialism, while supporting socialism for the rich. The people screaming the loudest about 'fascists' or 'socialists' or 'communists' or 'liberals' or 'nationalists' or 'racists' are in fact the imperial collaborators, the turncoats, the snitches, the sellouts, the shills, etc.

But what if those 'heretics' would suppress us if they have any power? What if they would use violence against us if they had any strength?
What if they are tyrants, fascists, holocaust-deniers-but-also-promoters, kraterocrats?
"But what if those 'heretics' would suppress us if they have any power? What if they would use violence against us if they had any strength? What if they are tyrants, fascists, holocaust-deniers-but-also-promoters, kraterocrats?"The righteous are already being repressed while the wicked posture themselves as righteous freedom fighters. Both extremes on the left and the right serve the same imperial master, most of them as useful idiots and parrots, led by pied imperial pipers play-acting a part.
The war is collectivism vs individual identity and liberty. That has always been the war. There is no other war. If you join up with a collective identity, you are the oppressor. Freedom means being free to be who you are instead of being pressed into a mold for administrative or ideological convenience.
Most slaves love their slavery and have no concept of real freedom. The idea is foreign to them. So they replace freedom with license to fill the void. They march to the piping tune of liberation fronts and liberation theology and nation-saving movements and nation-saving theology. It's all satanic bullshit dreamed up by the ruling con artists.
If you want to pass laws to restrict the liberty of your neighbor you have no right to cry when they turn the tables and do the same to you. If you want to force your neighbor to agree to things, you have no right to complain when they turn the tables and do the same to you.
People who do not trust in the divine to render judgment seek to usurp his place. And they always carry out this usurpation in the name of some noble cause.
If you think I'm going to take sides, you are mistaken. Both sides are WRONG. Both sides are the baddies. There are no good guys in these wars.
The good guys refuse to participate in playtime with monsters.

RUST_BACKTRACE=1 environment variable to display a backtraceThis ought to be suppressed by default. The old GNU tools and coreutils I was using handled broken pipes gracefully by not bothering the user during commands that are meant to break a pipe as part of the stream processing. Now I have to re-write all my hundreds of scripts to trap this kind of stuff. Maybe they just want to make sure you know Rust is under the hood. IDK.
Programming has blown up into utter ridiculousness. I think I need to go touch grass again.
@octade what causes pipes to break? and what techniques were the old tools using to gracefully handle it?
nuintari's rules of networking 0x13:
Seriously.
NAT is not a firewall.
NAT is not kind of a firewall.
NAT is not like a firewall.
NAT is not sort of a firewall.
NAT is not a firewall.
There is a world of difference between explicitly denied traffic, and traffic dropped because the device just didn't know what to do with it.
@nuintari In my experience NAT has honestly worked better than (at least endpoint firewalls, I'm sure proper dedicated hardware firewalls are lightyears ahead)
@OpenComputeDesign @nuintari a lot of devices doing NAT also act as a Firewall
@kabel42 @OpenComputeDesign Yes, most devices doing NAT duty are also being configured as firewalls. OTOH, most consumer NAT boxes have no actual firewall.
@nuintari @OpenComputeDesign I think it used to be pretty common for consumer router/NAT devices to have a firewall but the config for that often well hidden
@OpenComputeDesign @kabel42 Well, they block stuff. That is what they are for. If they block legitimate traffic, they are configured wrong or the legitimate traffic might carry an unacceptable risk.
You have to ask why something needs to be allowed, evaluate the need, and design appropriately around that need.
Too many people view a firewall as a all or nothing wonder entity. They are extremely nuanced, and only a portion of a proper security process.
And of course, "blaming the firewall" as step 1 is almost never helpful. People that do this are usually either incompetant, or just trying to shift blame.
PCAPs or it didn't happen, as they say.
Firewalls fit into a, what's the word I'm looking for, philosophy?, of things that IMO can _never_ work as well as people sell them as working. It's kinda like self driving cars. People think that machines are infallible, forgetting that:
They're still made by humans, and we can't do _anything_ right.
The universe is _way_ too complex for that shit.
A firewall is a good second layer to assist NAT. But if I had to pick one or the other, NAT every time.
@kabel42 @OpenComputeDesign @nuintari to paraphrase something from an MWL book: relying on NAT for network security is like relying on your underpants to stop a bullet.
@OpenComputeDesign @paul @kabel42 NAT is by definition, a centralized asset.
@OpenComputeDesign @nuintari @paul If it's T-mobile it's pretty close
@OpenComputeDesign @kabel42 @nuintari only one thing worse than NAT... CG-NAT
Sorry, to bring CG-NAT up, everybody, but just use effing IPv6
@paul @OpenComputeDesign @nuintari When I hear NAT I think CG NAT, why would you NAT yourself?
@OpenComputeDesign @kabel42 @nuintari you CG-NAT-ing yourself?
Or is this a "many pairs of underpants will stop the bullet" thing?
@kabel42 @OpenComputeDesign @nuintari because my ISP only gives me one public IPv4 address.
Got a shit tonne of IPv6 though
@paul @OpenComputeDesign @nuintari ok, right, I probably actually have hat for the v4 fallback, but most things are v6 and you get a prefix big enough to fit all v4 addresses :)
@kabel42 @OpenComputeDesign @nuintari yep, sadly many ISPs in the UK still don't provide IPv6 addressing. Some of the big do, but most don't yet still.
I had to request a 6 range via email.
@paul @OpenComputeDesign @nuintari I think most here give you IPv6 and CG-NAT v4 because they don't have enough v4 addresses
@kabel42 @OpenComputeDesign @nuintari that is one thing, I can still get a static or dynamic IPv4, no CG-NAT required. But I expect this to not last too much longer.
@OpenComputeDesign @kabel42 @nuintari useful for homelabs
Although with things like tailscale these days it's sort of not necessary
@OpenComputeDesign @kabel42 @nuintari if done properly it's no more a security risk than having stuff on a VPS (which also needs to be done properly)
The key thing is the "done properly" bit
@OpenComputeDesign @kabel42 @nuintari can't argue with that.
Except the alternative is letting someone else do it and then we just surrender to BigTech.
So we may as well all just shut the doors and go live in the woods
@paul @OpenComputeDesign @nuintari You could have a router/firewall that prevents opening connection from the server to the rest of your network and you should be as safe as behind a NAT
@OpenComputeDesign @paul @nuintari ToS isn't a problem here and i don't see how it affects DoS and my IP is pretty constant anyway
@OpenComputeDesign @kabel42 @nuintari and that's why we have DoS protection mechanisms and IPS.
Try to get into my network 3 times with auth failures and a firewall rule kicks in to block you forever.
None of this is perfect of course, but it should never be a set and forget thing, constant maintenance and monitoring required, so yes, not for everybody 🤣
@OpenComputeDesign @paul @nuintari but you can just fire UDP packets at any IP und if you have enough bandwidth not much else gets through, no matter what you do
@OpenComputeDesign @paul @nuintari yes, but that is independent of, if you are hosting anything
@OpenComputeDesign @paul @nuintari who (other than maybe cloudflare) would have a reason to dos some small site?
@OpenComputeDesign @paul @nuintari It's more a, back in my day we had better internet :)
@OpenComputeDesign @paul @nuintari
You're insanely luck on the ToS front.
nah, just EU standard
@OpenComputeDesign @paul @nuintari jupp, you can use you internet connection for what you want, as long as it's legal
@OpenComputeDesign @paul @nuintari if you suddenly have the urge for some quake multiplayer or other games from that time :)
@OpenComputeDesign @kabel42 @paul @nuintari
If you have a decent enough connection, LAN games over WAN actually work really well
Hell, if you have fiber and don't live on an island (no offense), a lot of multiplayer games work _really_ well, too.
30ms of latency is not zero, but it's also... really low
@pixx @kabel42 @paul @nuintari
I don't mean the lag or stability, I mean the concept. (Although, lag and stability certainly _are_ a problem,)
I guess this is probably my same social problems as always showing through. But playing games with people online has repeatedly proven it's self to be something I 100% anti-enjoy.
Other than running a web server from home, which is a terrible idea, I don't see how any of the rest of those require a static IP?
And you didn't ask what requires a static IP. You asked what was the point of one. It makes a number of things easier, and cheaper.
@cy I view running a public web server from home like running a public shop in your living room. I guess it must not be as truly catastrophically dangerous as I think because somehow people do do it. But personally I'd feel safer tattooing some of my more controversial opinions on my forehead than doing either. I don't even like it when people I know enter my living room.
@cy Maaaaan I couldn't do that. Even ignoring whole security aspect, my family would be _pissed_ if I got our service revoked for violating the EULA
It would not be a privacy nightmare for me. I would just refuse to own a phone. Privacy problem solved.
I know a man who still uses a flip phone and has never owned a smart phone and never had an Internet connection. No android or ios, no apps. He lives completely without Internet and computers and he is doing just fine.
I also lived using only a flip phone and without Internet for several years. In that time I accomplished more than half my life prior.

You can take the Israelite out of Egypt, but you also need to take Egypt out of the Israelite! The trinity is the imaginary god of Egypt. The Christian religion is Egypt.
In order to enter the kingdom of God you must repent of worshiping the trinity. God the Father is not a trinity. Only the Father is God. The Christian doctrine of the trinity is the idol the prophets warned us about.
The Unitarian faith is the faith of the Apostles and the only true God. The Trinitarian faith is a false faith in a false, Greek, metaphyical construct.
The Bible is NOT a book of metaphysics. It uses spiritual examples and parables to describe concrete things. The Greco-Roman 'church fathers' poisoned the well by applying pagan metaphysics to the Bible, creating the cargo cult known as the Nicene Creed and the Athanasian Creed.
God the Father is a spirit. He is not a man. He did not incarnate as a man. He raised up and sent a man to be our sacrifice for sin. Everything the trinitarians teach twists the Bible into a lie.
The Christian religion is Egypt, Babylon, Assyria, Rome, Grecia, etc. The Christian religion is the culmination of the statue in Nebuchadnezzar's dream.
Come out of the religion and find the real Jesus and be free!
The promise of the new covenant is that when the new order came, those who follow God the Father will have no need of any teacher or bishop or hierarchy to tell them to know God. God said we would have no need of a man to be our teachers or spiritual fathers. God promised that all of us will know him directly and not need anyone other than Jesus to lead the way.
The Christian religion impersonates Jesus and stands in the way, usurping his throne, as prophesied.

Christians use the prophecy of Isaiah to prop up their false virgin birth myth.
The English translation is incorrect. The word in Isaiah is 'almah' and does not mean a virgin. Many translators claim that it means, 'young woman' but that is not the actual meaning, although 'young woman' can be implied. 'Almah' means a 'maiden' of any age, or a ritually pure maiden--not a virgin. It means a woman who is ritually clean from keeping her covenant. The word is not about bedroom habit in any way, shape, or form.
In the New Testament, the Greek word, 'parthenos' is used, and is translated as 'virgin' then interpreted again in the vein of 'bedroom habits'. Once again, this is a false rendering, as 'parthenos' is in reference to the woman being ritually pure, meaning she is a 'virgin' who has not cheated on her God with idols. Even in modern English 'virgin' can refer to someone doing something the first time as a 'virgin'. We call uncut forest, 'virgin timber'. This is the sense in which 'almah' and 'parthenos' are being used in the Bible.
Babies are not conceived without a human father. Period. Joseph the husband of Miriam is the literal, biological father of Jesus of Nazareth. The Christian dogma of the 'virgin birth' and 'immaculate conception' is nonsense.
Blame the gnostic church 'fathers' for imposing this virgin birth myth into the Bible, and confusing people for 1800+ years.
No one in their right mind considers it a miracle for a young woman to conceive. It is considered a miracle in the Bible when a barren woman conceives. We see this with Abraham and Sarah, and again with the conception of John the Baptist.
People pretend to study the bible for years or decades and it never dawns on them how many times God calls Israel a harlot for fornicating with idols, and how he is going to have 'virgins' to worship him. By 'virgins' is meant those who have not committed spiritual fornication with false gods. It is not about bedroom habits.
@retro
You are hunting for Bible software, you say, but really you are hunting for souls of men, to lure them in here to drop lies on them.
The goal of retro's post is obvious: to kill faith in the divinity of Jesus. This is the work of the adversary.
A virgin giving birth is such a remarkable miracle that the liar says it is not possible. But with God, all things are possible. And it was God's Spirit in the perfect man Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who atoned for the sins of fallen man.
The 'adversary' is you.
I said:
"Babies are not conceived without a human father. Period. Joseph the husband of Miriam is the literal, biological father of Jesus of Nazareth. The Christian dogma of the 'virgin birth' and 'immaculate conception' is nonsense."
The Word of God agrees. The Bible in the original language explicitly tells us that Jesus is the biological seed of Joseph the husband of Mary.
"Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David ACCORDING TO THE FLESH ; "
"And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:"
Jesus is the literal seed of David, through his father Joseph. He is not the product of a virgin birth. The Apostles taught no such thing. They give the PATERNAL genealogy of Jesus to establish his claim to the throne of Israel as King of Israel. If Jesus were the product of a 'virgin birth' he would have no claim to the throne of Messiah and giving his genealogy would be a pointless lie. Your virgin birth myth denies his claim to the the Son of Man. It is the resurrection that makes him the Son of God with the divine titles. Having the titles does not make him a pre-existent 'god-man' who incarnated as a man. All the kings, priests, and judges of Israel before him had the titles of Elohim, and they didn't even have to rise from the dead to don the titles. What sets Jesus apart is that by the resurrection he gained all three titles of God. The only 'trinity' that exists is the trinity of divinely-ordained titles invested in the MAN, Jesus of Nazareth.
John the Baptist baptized and anointed Jesus the King of Israel. During this ceremony, God sent the spirit to descend to witness that Jesus is the Son of Man who would take all the titles of authority to himself. When God raised Jesus from the dead, Jesus became both King and High Priest, as well as chief Judge. All the titles are now invested in one man who sits on God's throne to judge the nations.
God told this to David about his progeny, Jesus:
"And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up THY SEED after thee, which shall proceed OUT OF THY BOWELS, and I will establish his kingdom."God clearly says that Jesus will proceed from David's loins as his seed or great grandson. The virgin birth myth calls God a liar. The virgin birth myth says that Jesus is not the offspring of David at all, but instead is a strangely generated chimera without a human father. Having no human sire would invalidate Jesus as heir to the throne of Israel, making his gospel and sacrifice of no effect.
By the very law of the Covenant God made with Israel and David, only the seed of David can inherit the throne of Israel. If Jesus was immaculately conceived, he would not be the seed of David and his claim to be Messiah would be invalid, by God's own law.
Church theologians who translated the bible wrongly attributed wrong meanings to the use of the words, 'almah' and 'parthenos' to prop up the pagan demigod religion of the Romish church. The Bible is clear that Jesus is the offspring of David:
"And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene."The Apostle is noting a play on words here in the prophecy. The Hebrew, 'nazar' is the branch or sapling that springs up from a stump or root. He is saying that Jesus is the descendant of David's family tree, through his biological father, Joseph.
The concept of 'virgin' is being applied to denote spiritual purity, not a discussion of the subject's bedroom habits. I am right, and you sir, are simply wrong. I understand the scripture, and you sir, simply have a false understanding from centuries of dogmatic brainwashing.
I will temporarily ignore your false and slanderous accusations against me and my motives. I know it is quite a shock to idol worshipers when they first hear that their trinity idol is a false god unknown to the Prophets and Apostles. This affords you an opportunity to repent of your idolatry and slandering.
If you make one more imbecilic false accusation or continue to impugn my character with Dominican-styled inquistor slanders, I will just mute you and move on. I don't have a duty to devote my life to countering endless streams of baseless accusations from half-wit idol kissers.
@rm Exactly why I use the Life Bible Android application. Multiple translations, Strong's, note taking built in, and lots more. (Used to be called Tecarta)
@rm With my dyslexia, I can't actually read printed matter very easily, however the refresh rate of the screen fixes it nicely for me. I learned that back in the early 70's when I started taking computer programming as part of my physics study in college. My high school and grade schools never picked up on it.
@rm Back when we ran a dial-up BBS, I had the King James Bible online with a simple app I wrote, and was doing all my study on a CRT! As tech has improved of course, I've moved with it.
Finding that perfect specimen of a paper bible is like a treasure hunt. I found one good pocket edition with a readable font many years ago and I carried it everywhere 'religiously'.
Now I read 99% on a computer screen.
The Virgin Birth narrative is not in the Bible. You only think it is. Jesus is a man, not a 'god incarnate.'

Preaching against the virgin birth, using the Bible as evidence? That's a new one.
The Bible most definitely says Mary was a virgin when Gabriel, the archangel, visited her to declare she was chosen to give birth to the Son of God. He was called Emmanuel, meaning God with us, and named JESUS.
Matthew 1:18-23
Luke 1
Isaiah 7:14
Even the Muslim Quran says Jesus (Isa) was born of the virgin Mary.
Some of this is probably good advice, but the last one?! How could I even drink from a sealed container? Does anyone know what they are actually trying to say?
Don't drink from cans, bottles, jars, etc. Instead use:
*sippy cup
*bubba keg
*hydration bag
*osmosis
@DramatisPaws Well, it is good advice... Drinking from a sealed container is likely to result in damaged teeth.

**First entry into RetroShare: how to find peers**
In RetroShare you don’t “find people” in the usual sense. You don’t search — you agree. This is a fundamental mindset shift; without it, the first launch will always feel empty.
The first thing to accept: there is no global lobby in RetroShare. The emptiness after installation is not a bug, but the honest state of a network without links. Until you have trusted contacts, you literally have no network.
**The basic method — out-of-band contact.**
Peers are found outside RetroShare. These are friends, colleagues, members of thematic communities, people from Matrix, XMPP, IRC, Mastodon, forums — any place where key exchange can happen safely. RetroShare does not start with a “search” button, but with the phrase: “here is my key.”
**The second path — a control peer.**
The most reliable way for first entry is a second instance you control, or a pre-arranged experimental partner. This removes uncertainty: if the connection fails, the issue is technical, not social.
**The third path — thematic islands.**
There are small RetroShare communities built around ideas: privacy, P2P, darknet research, offline activism. They are not widely advertised because the network is not designed for random influx. Entry always starts with dialogue, not a click.
**What does not work.**
Publishing keys into the void. Waiting for someone to add you. Relying on auto-discovery. This is centralized-network thinking applied to a system where it has no meaning.
**How to know you’ve found a peer.**
The contact comes online. The connection stabilizes. Services start working: chat, forums, file exchange. At that point RetroShare stops being an abstraction and becomes an environment for communication.
**Bottom line:**

Is there an ActivityPub platform that will host PDFs and the like; basically a PixelFed for documents?
@profoundlynerdy and how will that work? like a torrent ?
@emaechler A distributed Scribd, maybe?
@profoundlynerdy yes that what i meant with torrent - like the share network.... or do you think more like colaboration (simultanuos editing from multiple people)?
There once was a man
from Peru — whose limericks
turned into haiku
@inthehands thank you! I can appreciate this haiku, even though it’s technically not haiku, but it f*kin rhymes. As someone who writes poetry (for myself, not for sharing;) - I can’t stand “white poetry” (don’t know how it’s in English;) - poetry that doesn’t rhyme:
we can all write words
in separate lines
this, however -
does not make it a poem,
i think.
And hailu is math, not poetry IMHO. With a single exception- this!;) 🫶
For me, a poem is not about separate lines
nor perfect rhymes.
It's about capturing truth in metaphor that can't be captured in a net of facts.
But that's me, I'm guessing there are thousands of ways of seeing this.
(and in English "white" verse is "blank verse")
@Retreival9096 @inthehands thank you very much for explanation 🫶, I still don’t understand why one feels compelled to write that wisdom in lines? And wouldn’t those words of wisdom sound more-better if one would spend some time working on finding the words which not only translate the feeling and the meaning - but also rhyme? Maybe it’s just me, remembering the time I spent trying to find better words and re-arranging them to sound better.. blank verse sounds lazy 2me;)
Across time and culture the notion for what is "real" poetry have changed. I studied Old English (Anglo-Saxon) a bit for a while, and learned they didn't care for rhyme between lines, but wanted a pattern of alliteration within lines; Viking poets were expected to be able to create a poem to honor a person or commemorate an occasion *on the spot* (with rules that included having different meter from line to line -- iambic pentameter was considered boring, because it was just normal speaking pattern).
I'm guessing that what makes your poems good is the time and thought you put in to choosing the right words and best ways to say something. If you spent the same effort alphabetizing the lines, or alliterating words in the lines, or any other poetry rules from other places or time, you would still get quality -- just a different quality.
@Retreival9096 @inthehands heh, to be completely honest with you - the only thing my poetry does good - is “crystallizing the vibe”, I mean whenever I re-read them, I get instantly transported to the time and mental space it was written… Some are a trip to read, as they feel prophetic with a hindsight, hence they are “for personal consumption only”;))
@DMTomas @Retreival9096 @inthehands I confess I disagree. A LOT of amazing poetry plays with line and rhyme.
Consider Dickinson's "Before I got my eye put out" which doesn't rhyme but every step of the way feels like it should, like maybe it almost does. The effect is as mesmerizing as the imagery, and is very thematic.
https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/52135/before-i-got-my-eye-put-out-336
Or John Keene's "Beatitudes", which doesn't rhyme at all but would lose everything if it were just set in ordinary prose.
@gwcoffey @Retreival9096 @inthehands Oh wow, the first one is a trip, a tease in a bad way, feels very much like my flavor of panic attack - which is - welll done, good sir (to author;) - the second one lost me;)… my education in english poetry consists almost entirely of song lyrics and Tolkien;) - haven’t read even Shakespeare in English, only in Lithuanian (which is… why? to admire translator?;), had German, as my first foreign language, read Göethe and Schiller;)
Horseradish is a type of radish, with spicy flavour and eaten by horses. However this is simply partly true — the only accurate part is its strong taste. It also belongs to the Brassicaceae family (along with cabbage, mustard and, yes, radish).
Some days I feel like I'm a whore for the past, slave for the future, and prisoner for the present.
I need to ask the tech people of the Internet something and you're going to have to forgive me if I sound stupid. I honestly don't know what I'm talking about here so you'll have to explain like I'm five.
I run a music school with a website. Say there is an open source piece of software out there which I would very much like to use at my school for educational purposes. Say that the software is published on GitHub. How hard would it be to take a copy of that open source software which runs in a browser and host a version of it on my own music school website?
@Lana That depends very much on how your web site is hosted, and the resources the tool requires. I know that's not particularly helpful, but that's the most honest answer I can give.
@Lana It requires specifics, basically.
What's the github URL?
@realcainmosni if I'm understanding this part right, it doesn't require a server to host it, right? This is just pure code? Like, would a copy-paste work here?
@Lana @realcainmosni you do need a server, but the simplest kind. If you already have website, you can probably add this by just copying the files there. If you don't already have one, there are tons of services that offer free static site hosting. Unfortunately I can't recommend one since I'm techy enough to run my own.
If your website already has DNS set up, not hard at all.
If you need to point DNS to your domain, use a panel like HestiaCP or Webmin or Virtualmin.
@rl_dane define "slop" for me? I've been running Linux Mint for years. I might be biased, but I'd consider it pretty free of slop. :)
@rl_dane The "AI Revelation" has greatly lowered the standard for slop, so we may need some help understanding what your standard is. I am curious
Yes, the devil is obviously in the details. I would start off with: let's not include any projects that are wholly generated by large language models and work the debate from there.
I would also highly endorse picking alternatives to major projects that have turned to using large language models to drive development.
I don't know to what extent the Vim project is using large language models, but Vim Classic looks like a nice project to pick up as an alternative.
Point me please, to projects which are heavily dependent on LLM code generation which are older than 10 years.
The Linux distributions I use, have no code which is 100% LLM generated
@dendrobatus_azureus @FranklinFrank
I'm not sure how heavily is "heavily," but I've heard that both vim and tmux are accepting slop "contributions."
The Linux kernel, as well.
How prevalent that slop is, I don't know.
tmux: https://codeberg.org/ethical-foss/open-slopware#terminal-multiplexers
vim: https://codeberg.org/ethical-foss/open-slopware#text-and-code-editors
I've seen where Torvalds said that he considers them as just another tool in the Arsenal, he doesn't really care, if the code is good.
He doesn't want his time to be wasted He'll scream and shout if an LLM creates that time pit
These following words an extreme version of me would say
It looks like you will have to stop using Linux. Since from your perspective anything that uses remotely an LLM is bad, you will have to stop, otherwise you will contribute to the environment being destroyed willingly and actively
In practice that is impossible. If you drive a modern car it has the Linux kernel. If you have a smart TV or more you're also using the tainted kernel. Even if you have a stick which also streams or a camera you will have a Linux kernel in many cases.
These LLMs are an infection of the planet's code base
Since you're already using BSD a solution would be to cut using Linux on your computers drastically
@dendrobatus_azureus @FranklinFrank
There's no good solution. Well, there's no perfect solution.
We mitigate the bad as much as we reasonably can while we wade chest deep through the muck of dystopia.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@rl_dane I'm being entirely defeatist here, I know, but this isn't really possible. The Linux kernel itself has been slopped to hell. You're better off using NetBSD and hacking in functionality from glibc.
@rl_dane At this point, I kind of just stopped caring what on my stack was slop or not so long as it's at least working. I'm happy knowing I won't be using bullshit generators, I don't want the psychic pain of seeing something I use succumb to it and having to find entirely new software to account for it. I could waste my time without as much of a headache.
This is obviously where the rubber meets the road.
It's never going to be easy, and it's never going to be perfect, but I think making efforts in the direction of virtue is always worthwhile.
@rl_dane Did you mean: BSD?
(/joking.)
@rl_dane ...I'm skeptical that openbsd would fall down that trap
From what I've heard, they still haven't made any comment about tmux including slop, which is now in base.
If I am mistaken, I would very much like to know.
@rl_dane Slackware?
Not a bad start. But we'd need to swap stuff like vim for forks like vim-classic, and try to work it from there.
@rl_dane I've wondered about combining this with having all parts of the OS userland written or translated to Rust. Just watching for supply chain issues during compile time may be better than hoping supply chain issues don't happen at runtime.
I don't know much about Rust, but they seme to be following the npm philosophy of "just throw hundreds of spidering nested dependencies at the problem."
Trying to compile even a small rust project on a raspberry pi-like device is not a fun time.
By virtue of that, and the very "Chesterton's Fence bulldozer" attitude of the Rust boosters, I'm not a huge fan of it.
Edit: typo, typing on glass. #ShrimpFingers #StrongBad
@rl_dane I like the fact it is a compiled language. Maybe Ada or SPARK might be better?
Maybe there needs to be a dialect of C with strict bounds checking baked-in? 🤷🏻♂️
To be a little more serious, which distro maintainers will clean kernel from slop?
Ok, let's start with slopless and work towards slop-free? 😄
Man, I dont know what to say. If someone can't see what's 100m down the road, what do you even say?
"Maybe don't drive."?!? 😄
I'll admit it's an exaggeration, but accomplishing goals in the short-term with no regard to long-term consequences is still foolish and myopic.
FOSS is not about code. FOSS isn't really that much about software.
It's a virtue thing.
Forgive the religious analogy (if that's a dicey subject for you), but I'm reminded of the saying, "Beware the Leaven of the Pharisees*).
Destructive ideology and praxis worm their way in a little at a time, but the opposite is also true! A handful of people with noble aims and character can truly affect change a little at a time, and it can grow organically.
So be that noble person. I believe in you. =)
* Necessary disclaimer that the harsh criticism against "the Pharisees" is located in its particular time, and is in the context of criticizing abuse and empathic gaps among the wealthy and powerful in that time, and is not a criticism of Judaism itself, or even of religious figures in general.
@moses_izumi @hikari @AnachronistJohn
#NetBSD definitely deserves some love for being one of the very few, and perhaps the most featureful Operating Systems that has a strong #NOAi stance.❤️🔥
I definitely want to start supporting them. I need to get on that.
@rl_dane @moses_izumi @hikari It’s a difficult thing to gauge what’s most desirable. For instance, NetBSD has no ability to install and run NVIDIA drivers, unlike FreeBSD and Linux. Some think that’s a bad thing, and some consider it a good thing.
In the case of “AI”, people say NetBSD will be left behind, but that’s a story we’ve heard for ages and will continue to hear. After all, Debian folks, in spite of all their funding and their corporate paid developers, can’t support non-mainstream things, like 32 bit x86, and seriously suggest dropping portability because it costs them too much time and energy.
So if NetBSD can support VAX, SuperH, Alpha, 32 bit x86, m68k and others, but Debian is having trouble supporting just six architectures, I think NetBSD is doing something right.
The problem with NetBSD being a good replacement desktop OS is that it runs well on the hardware it supports, so if you choose your hardware for NetBSD, you’ll likely be happy. But you can’t just assume that you’ll get accelerated video or that your wifi card will work on any randomly chosen system.
No idea, but there's always the kernel. I dunno.
No zero-sum game. We do the best we can, and try to make the principled stance as much as we're able.
"All or Nothing" is the anti-rallying-cry of the soulless usurers that would rather you not even try.
Forget that junk. :D
@rl_dane @ddlyh I'm squarely in the camp "there no chance for non-Win/Lin/Mac to catch up on drivers, workarounds for hardware bugs, and architecture support", so yeah, the kernel is something to live with. NetBSD is famous for "runs on your toaster", but I'm not sure if that's even still true for stuff newer than, let's say, 2015.
Linux has a better chance to run on non-x86 stuff that "new"…
A hybrid solution is your best bet. I run #FreeBSD, #OpenBSD, and various #Linux distros as the case requires. We set sail for the most virtuous heading we can manage, and we muddle along and pick up new skills along the way. It's a journey. ;)
If #NetBSD doesn't work on a particular bit of hardware, maybe try Open, then Free, then maybe try a principled #Linux distro like #Slackware or #Void. If you end up with Ubuntu or something, hey, you did your best.
Keep chipping away at the problem. :D
It's 1998, you make a website in the copy of frontpage express that came with your computer, it's just like Word and it's very easy, you figure out how to upload it to the couple megs of web space that your ISP gives you (the instructions are on their website), you visit your site in your browser and everything's fine and the site's readable and everything looks the way it should
🦝 "Wow, if it's this easy in 1998, I bet it'll be even easier in 2026" you think to yourself for some reason
The site works fine but sometimes you get email from guys - always guys - telling you that the code sucks because you used frontpage express
You don't bother replying because it doesn't matter, the site works fine, but this does discourage you somewhat, so you get a copy of Macromedia Dreamweaver on CD from a guy outside the computer market. His stall was a tarp on the ground.
Dreamweaver is WAY better than frontpage! It shows you the HTML code side by side with the website, so when you move things around you can see how that changes the code. Pretty neat! Doesn't matter, but pretty neat! You can see what the tedious guys were talking about now, the code that frontpage made was a real mess, so you tidy it up just to avoid getting angry emails from weirdos about shit that doesn't matter
After a little while you start spending more time in the code bit 'cause your brain's gotten fucked to the point where it's easier to type out <b>shit like this</b> than to hit the Bold button
A little while later you start getting different emails
You've been laying out your site in tables, is the thing, and there's this new thing now, cascading style sheets, and you can use those for laying out your site. Does Dreamweaver do those? I dunno. Does Frontpage? Oh almost definitely not
You're also getting shitty emails about using frames. Which is weird because that's literally what everybody uses, you don't want to copy/paste all your section links across every single page of your website and then update every one every time you make a new page, so you make the navigation Once and you put it in a frame. But the most tedious men in the world are now telling you frames are no good
You learn about server-side includes, your server doesn't do that of course, your five megabytes of server space are free, they came with your free internet access. So you keep using frames, but it does bother you.
You join a web design newsgroup. You ask a question, how come my site does this weird thing in Netscape? The answer: "Probably because you coded it badly." You leave the web design newsgroup.
You're beginning to understand that there's a lot of money in this.
You make some money.
You do a few websites for friends, family, local businesses, you make a little bit of money.
You didn't need a degree, for this. You didn't need to pay to go on a course and get a bit of paper, there WERE no bits of paper then, you could learn it for free and the websites you built were proof that you could build a website.
That scared some folks?
Between all these things you learned Flash, which was a wonderful bit of software that let you make ANYTHING, and you also learned cascading style sheets, which, I cannot stress this enough, were complete fucking dogshit.
Like, it's good today, it's normal today, it's the standard way of doing things today - but back then, it sucked so hard that web designers with a decade of experience would crank out articles about trying to achieve "the Holy Grail of web design," which was three columns, a header, and a footer, with stuff in the middle bit and links in the left bit and maybe some other links in the right bit, that didn't fuck up in some hilarious or obscure way. Shit that was trivial and intuitive with tables, but absolutely fucking impossible with CSS.
It made everything harder, and it would be over a DECADE before anything got easier.
During this time, web editors like Frontpage and Dreamweaver just outright fucking gave up. You don't drag and drop anymore, you don't highlight text and ctrl-I for italics anymore, it's all code, except instead of <i> for italics it's <em> now.
What does <em> do? It adds emphasis. How does it add emphasis? By making the text italic. It's this way because you might not want your emphasized text to be italic, you might want it to have a drop shadow or be bright red or some shit like that, and the idea of divorcing the content from the presentation was kinda the Whole Deal of CSS, so that kiiiinda makes sense, in the way that a lot of early CSS kiiiiinda made sense
You validate your site's valid HTML with some bastard online tool because you've seen the badges on other sites saying "Valid XHTML!" like it matters. You spend some evenings cleaning up your old websites so that they pass the validation and you can get that badge and display it proudly on your site. After you've spent fucking hours doing so, your site looks and loads absolutely identically to how it did before, but now you're part of a club of people who are Doing It Properly
The thing that constantly nags at the back of your mind is that nobody cares about the difference between tables and CSS except **other web designers,** and Absolutely Nobody cares what web designers think, you should know, you've been doing it as a full time job for several years at this point
You play some Flash games, that's fun. You MAKE some Flash games, that's even more fun. See, Flash was a drawing and animation app made for artists who wanted to fuck around and make cartoons, which means they made it so simple that anybody could get to grips with it and start making animations within two cups of tea, but then someone at the lab tripped over his sideburns and spilled a cauldron of programming language into it, and then you could program Whole Ass Games in it
The whole CSS thing was a huge mess but that CSS Zen Garden website was trying its best to sort of explain its benefits and you were just starting to come around to this new, worse, more complicated way of doing things that might nonetheless let you do some neat tricks (although not as cool as flash obvs)
So there was this weird situation where the Open Standard, the libre open source shit, the anyone-can-make-it-in-notepad shit, was the realm of very boring websites, and the proprietary, locked-down, $600 to get started software was where art met anarchy. The proper fun, the proper expression of humanity and experimentation with interactive web content and making not just new stories but new ways to tell them, was happening in Flash, which was being bought out by giant evil megacorp inc.
The reason for this is two things, first Flash was WAY easier, and second my friend with a tarp full of CD-R's from earlier in the thread
Early smartphones were coming online around about then, and they weren't so hot with the whole flash thing. Like, it'd work, kinda, you'd miss out on all the cool rollover effects because you had to poke the screen with a little stick and it was just a resistive touchscreen, it didn't know you were hovering the stick over the screen.
For example, say you'd made a website for a local club of friendly motorcycle gentlemen whose navigation menu was a series of steel plates overlaid against the backdrop of a beating heart that was also a V8 engine. As you moved your mouse over the links, each link would rust over, the heart would rev up and get excited, and then when you actually clicked on a link, the whole thing would explode. On a smartphone, the engine heart wouldn't rev up, it'd just explode for seemingly no reason. But, y'know, it worked, we could make it work, and motorcycle gentlemen don't need no fucking professional white background with a pale blue header y'know
This needs to be a blog post, this really needs to be a blog post, I spaffed out the first post in the thread off the top of my head and then went and had dinner and fucked around a bit and then came back and carried on and didn't notice that the first post was blowing up
Anyway then the iphone came out and fucked everything up
See the iPhone was fucking shit compared to other smartphones at the time, like it was YEARS behind, but apple did that thing where, like, remember how they did it with MP3 players? Instead of saying stuff like "four gigs of space, six hour battery life" they said "A thousand songs in your pocket and you don't have to fuck around with CDs," while all the other MP3 player makers were fighting over people who already knew about MP3 players, apple targeted people who'd never used an MP3 player before, and that's what they did with their smartphone.
Anyway it didn't have a keyboard, it couldn't do flash, and you couldn't even copy and paste on the fucker but it sold like buggery because the adverts didn't say shit like "600mHz processor and 256 megs of RAM," they said "The internet in your pocket."
Now you can't make just one website anymore, you have to make two websites, and suddenly the point of all this CSS stuff becomes clear
So now you're making two websites, one for proper computers and one for shitty little three-inch screens.
This is the point where, let's be honest, most folk check the fuck out. Myspace is a thing now, livejournal is a thing now, if you <tr><td>'d your way into one website and it took you fucking ages you sure as fuck weren't gonna make two unless you understand that fancy new CSS shit.
I understood that fancy new CSS shit. But fucking hell, even at the time I knew, despite how AAALLLLL the websites about making websites had been banging on about CSS for ages, despite how all the bloggers were saying hey look this is definitely the way forward, I knew that knowing how to use CSS for layout put me in an EXTREME minority. The web wasn't for quiet uncles or excitable kids with a pirated copy of dreamweaver off the tarp outside the Manchester computer fair anymore, it was for fucking nerds with notepad++ who'd gotten interested in web standards. It was for people like me.
I'm not fond of people like me
The barrier to entry was raised, is the point, the internet became five shit websites posting screenshots of the other four because the technical barrier to entry was raised, from "Find a guy outside a computer market and pay him a fiver" to "Learn to code. Also learn to code two websites for every one website. Actually four websites now because dark mode."
But here's the thing. I made money making websites. I suspect a lot of people here, on this most nerdiest of social networks, made money making websites. And for a while, there was LOTS of competition for people who wanted to make money making websites. For a while, round my way at least, people used to say "I'm a web designer" as a synonym for "I'm unemployed," 'cause any random sod who was halfway-handy with a computer could make a website and if you don't have a job then you have more time to figure out how to make websites.
We weren't special, we were just fucking unemployed. Knowing how to use a computer and make a website wasn't something that set anyone apart in a sea of other people who figured out to make websites because they didn't have a job. You had to compete based on How Beautiful And Interesting Can You Make A Website
(at least until websites weren't beautiful anymore)
Raising the barrier to entry wasn't just down to, like, "Oh it's because phones" or "Fucking facebook and amazon," it was us. It was, like, "See this badge that leads to a code validation page, that means I actually know what I'm doing," it was shit like saying "Domain name" instead of "Web address" and when too many people knew what a domain name was we started saying "DNS Zone," it was telling people for fuck's sake don't go giving money to folk who still make websites using pirated copies of dreamweaver, give money to me instead because I know how to make a website the Incredibly Boring way.
Our, Nerd Fucking Desire to be Special.
We made website-making harder, to show that we can do a thing that's very hard and that normal people can't do.
Elitism. But, like, very very petty elitism.
Making a website should be the easiest fucking thing in the world by now. There should be a program that you can use to spit out a website as easy as Word spits out words on paper, and we - us fucking foss nerds or whoever - should've made it.
It probably would've made shit HTML code soup but so long as it worked, it wouldn't matter, nobody would care, just like nobody cared that Frontpage put out shit HTML code soup.
Well, nobody cared except the likes of us, and look where that got us.
Is there a spec yet for including a HTML page inside another HTML page, without fucking around with javascript or php or server-side includes or whatever? A thing people wanted to do on their freeserve.co.uk subdomain in 1997? Just like, <include src="navigation.html">, or is that making things too easy?
'cause fucking hell, we don't want things to be too easy, do we
This shouldn't have been a blog post, it should've been a podcast haha, it meanders and doesn't have a point and there's a lot of growling and yelling, good thing I don't have a microphone and also know that something like 99.9% of podcasts are one episode long and this would be my episode
Anyway I see the first post of this thread is continuing to blow up 'cause of folk who didn't know it'd go to horrible uncomfortable "We blew it all up" places, I'll see if everyone's mad at me in the morning
oh god it's morning
I got a toot hangover and too many replies to read
It's 2026 and you're doing a thread late at night in a flow state of heightened emotion, 100mph jabbing at the keyboard, a gibbering goblin bloodshot eyes in the cold monitor light, surf the wave and thrash the keyboard no think just post
It's 2026 and you follow the crowd to see what all the fuss is about, haha looks like someone got themselves really wound up last night - oh shit it was me
Don't gibbering manifesto before bed kids
A lotta replyguys missing the point of this thread
🐹 Just learn HTML, it's not that hard
🐼 Wordpress is pretty okay I guess
🦊 It doesn't take much command-line knowledge to work a static site generator
🦝 Cool, you know how to make websites, so do I. The point is that *the internet becomes boring and shit when only people like us get to make websites.*
It's difficult not to go down the rabbithole of "What we need is a really really good well-written HTML/CSS tutorial, I'll go write one" rabbithole, or "What if there was a lovely template that worked on desktop or mobile and was commented out the wazoo with an open invitation to use it" junk, those things already exist, when what the internet REALLY needs is
* a modern WYSIWYG website maker
* that is free
* that normal people can use
* that everybody knows about, either because it came with your computer or someone told you about it
* that comes with a bunch of free hosts pre-programmed in
* that the AVERAGE PERSON (IE not anyone who'll ever read this post) can use to make a website in an evening or two
* (EDIT because I know FOSS people are reading this) That has a good name, not the worst most ridiculous fucking unpronounceable garbage name you've ever heard of, a name that you'd be comfortable or even proud saying in public or on television, don't call it KWebExtruder or Martin'sKoolHTMLPooper or xhngthfffrrr or some shit like that
If this sounds bananas it's because you didn't use this exact program in the late 90's
@ifixcoinops reading Tim Berners-Lee's book, he created a program like this alongside the first browser. He never intended or expected humans to be writing HTML tags by hand!
History
