Software should empower users. Software should not abuse, spy on, or hobble users. This is SOFTWARE FREEDOM.
Some evil companies design software to wield power over users. This is SOFTWARE BONDAGE. It is analogous to literal bondage because the user is cornered, shackled or caged.
Some evil companies forcibly integrate user systems into the AI cloud panopticon so the system won't install or boot without the user being identified and tracked by the panopticon. This is SOFTWARE SLAVERY. It is analogous to literal slavery in that the user needs constant permission to use the system and can only use the system in a way that chiefly benefits the software slaver.
Some evil companies forcibly harvest user data and force users to store private data in compromising cloud settings where their privacy is violated and subject to even greater risk of violation. This is SOFTWARE RAPE. It is analagous to literal rape and denudes users of the privacy and security of their data.
When an evil company is doing evil with its software or hardware offerings these terms may be used to tell the truth about such evil actions.
#SoftwareFreedom #SoftwareBondage #SoftwareRape #SoftwareSlavery
I notice that the /people/ section of snac gives broken links to follower and followee profiles.
For instance entries for mastodon users are like this:
https://mastodon.social/ap/users/253190229248136435
Which appears to be an API endpoint rather than a web link. Links like this lead to a not found page.
If I press: "open in Webbrowser" to see the conversation and not only the post, then it will go to some /ap/ endpoint that is 404.
I think that was not always the case, but maybe I misremember it.
@grunfink@comam.es
/ap/ part) as the actor identifier. Also, doing a webfinger query reports this as the actor URL, which points to nowhere, as it returns a 404.I have no idea about why this happens.
This is such a bleak fucking planet
@OpenComputeDesign This planet you mean?
@chestycougth Yeah, that's the one
@OpenComputeDesign @chestycougth If we could put the humans out of frame always it might be pretty ok?
@admitsWrongIfProven @chestycougth
Even without humans I'm really not a fan of this planet tbh
@OpenComputeDesign @admitsWrongIfProven why so? Personally I think it has a lot of cool stuff going on even if you ignore the biology
@chestycougth @admitsWrongIfProven
Without humans, all other life still sucks. And without life, it's just another big rock in a field of big rocks
@OpenComputeDesign
Is the life on this specific planet really the issue?
Might there be a confounding issue?
@admitsWrongIfProven @chestycougth The problem really, is that the universe is just really cruel and uncaring.
@OpenComputeDesign
It is. But what makes this unbearable is humans, how they act, not the universe, right?
The universe is our playground, and we collectively chose to make it a place of torture.
Not any one person, but the choices, influenced by previous choices... might i have done anything useful if my ancestors had not be conditioned to be useless or harmful?
Might you have? What is keeping you, the past or the present?
@admitsWrongIfProven @chestycougth
I mean, because I am a human, I would say humans are probably the worst things in the universe. But even if I was the only human in existence, I would still deeply dislike the universe
@OpenComputeDesign
But why? I'm all for some nice, thorough disdain, but what is the issue?
I presented some disdain of mine, but what is yours?
@admitsWrongIfProven @chestycougth
I guess my main problem with the universe is, it has no justice
@OpenComputeDesign
Sounds a bit cliché, but.... who hurt you? Who, specifically, needs justice to be applied to them?
@admitsWrongIfProven @chestycougth
Well, speaking generally, the world is absolutely overflowing with injustice. Speaking personally, me. I am injust
@OpenComputeDesign
That is illogical. If you were truely injust, you would welcome the injustice.
What exactly are you doing that you judge to be wrong, and what factors are contributing to this ongoing injustice emenating from you?
No thought crimes here. I am asking about doing, not thinking.
@admitsWrongIfProven @chestycougth
It's not exactly what I do, but what I _would_ do if I relaxed the prison of my mind that keeps me this way
@OpenComputeDesign
Isn't that a bit black and white? Would you really wreck havoc if you relaxed? Are you sure, or just afraid and beating yourself up because you are not sure?
Not being alone with anyone vulnerable might be enough to provide safety in terms of not doing anything wrong, do you really need to beat yourself up to stop harm?
Yes, I think so. I do not think I can be trusted to any significant degree
@OpenComputeDesign I never said that you should be trusted... look at my toot again, will you? I'm not alone with vulnerable people either, who needs that kind of responsibility?
The problem is, what I want in life requires that I bet trusted with vulnerable people
@OpenComputeDesign Ofc, you want to care, i got that much.
Whatever happened to you was probably not planned or even thought about. You are the next iteration, thinking, caring.
Can you accept that while not perfect, you are trying?
trying is not good enough. I have to be perfect
@OpenComputeDesign So you do trial runs in controlled conditions. Have you never heard of engineering or are you so poisoned by current society that you would not consider a rational approach?
@admitsWrongIfProven I don't have this option
@OpenComputeDesign Then it is not your fault.
@OpenComputeDesign I mean this was the point all along. If i thought it was, i would not have talked to you. There are a lot of people out there harming others, i may scream at them but i do not talk to them.
Good decision to not put anyone at risk, you are doing well. I'm sorry you are suffering, but you are not harming anyone, that's good. Take pride in that, there are sadly too many that do not do that.
@OpenComputeDesign @admitsWrongIfProven Medication might be good for you. I'm on fluoxetine. I took it for a few years and felt like I was getting no benefit. I stopped and still felt the same, but then I was getting more and more emotional and unable to concentrate and my grades went from 90-100% to 60-50%. I started back after that and I've been much calmer and happier. We are just chemistry after all.
@chestycougth @admitsWrongIfProven
I can't trust medication. Even if it works, it's fickle, and may not always be available
@OpenComputeDesign @admitsWrongIfProven You can always try it and drop it if it doesn't work. I've had an on again-off again relationship with meds for years but it is worth trying because you won't have to stick to it if you don't like it
@chestycougth @admitsWrongIfProven
the problem is if it _does_ work
@OpenComputeDesign @admitsWrongIfProven If it doesn't work then it doesn't work. But if you don't try it then it definitely won't work. So you might as well try it and get half a chance of it working instead of not taking anything and having 0% chance of things getting better
@chestycougth @admitsWrongIfProven
If it works, I'll become dependent on it, and that is dangerous
@OpenComputeDesign
Heh, funny. The music i am currently listening to just contained "meine gefühle werden abgestellt", translated "my feelings are turned off".
Pertinent?
"I am injust"You are eons ahead of many other humans in understanding human nature. Most people spend their entire lives weaving an illusion around their own character.
@OpenComputeDesign @admitsWrongIfProven It has laws, i.e. physical laws, but justice is a human concept. A concept created to help manage law and order among humans. Justice is not a natural law. Pain exists as something universal to probably all conscious life, but happiness has the same privilege.
There will always be things that to a humans conception of things are 'unjust', but that's just not understanding that 'justice' is not a natural law as mentioned above
@chestycougth @admitsWrongIfProven
Yes, the universe does not care how much things suffer. Fairness is not only not a universal law, it's not even possible.
I absolutely do not want to live in a universe that isn't fair
@OpenComputeDesign
Well, i can agree on the not wanting to, i was not asked if i wanted to either.
It seems to me you are discounting how much things can change depending on small circumstances. People being nice versus people sticking needles in you constantly would make a difference, right?
That the universe does not enforce fairness or justice is one thing, but what are the people around you doing?
@admitsWrongIfProven @chestycougth
The people around me are actually very supportive right now, unfortunately for them. If they were not, I would probably be dead already.
The problem really is me. I do not like the person I am.
@OpenComputeDesign
You do understand that while you can change some parts about who you are, a lot is coming from your past, and that you are not solely responsible for who you are?
@admitsWrongIfProven @chestycougth
It doesn't really matter to me if I'm responsible for being this way or not. I _am_ this way, and that is unacceptable to me
@OpenComputeDesign Dude, if you don't factor in outside influence, you're a puppet.
I'm all for being rational, but do it right, ffs.
Justice is not suffering for someone else. Justice is placing blame where it needs to be. Otherwise, you are just a support for the villain.
I may have been hurt in such a way as to make me dangerous, I'm not sure. But I _am_ dangerous now
@OpenComputeDesign And you accept the responsibility. Sounds good?
What about this: I'm sorry to hear you have to do so much to just not fuck up, that's an unfair burden to place on you. But i'm proud of you for bearing it.
@OpenComputeDesign
How are you dangerous anyway?
@admitsWrongIfProven
"Yes, the universe does not care how much things suffer."The same universe provides delights, wonders, summer breezes, and families for us to grow up in and fellowship with other humans and even really lovable and cool animals. It's not all gloomy.
@octade @chestycougth @admitsWrongIfProven
It's not un-gloomy enough to make up for the gloom, though
The gloom is just a shadow of things to come. Shadows seem gloomy until the sun rises high.
@OpenComputeDesign @octade @chestycougth Isn't the actual core of this that humans make it worse?
I agree that perfect fairness is impossible, but what reason is there to care about that if fairness is sabotaged a lot more effectively by directed action? Like, why care about the cat peeing in your yard when someone murders you?
@admitsWrongIfProven
> Isn't the actual core of this that humans make it worse?
Parasitoid wasps, zombie ant fungus, predation and parasitism in general. Humans aren't the only assholes. The entire earth is built on cruelty.
@OpenComputeDesign @octade @chestycougth
@light @OpenComputeDesign @octade @chestycougth The difference being that humans would theoretically be able to reflect and understand this, but fungi, wasps and ants not, right?
@OpenComputeDesign @admitsWrongIfProven It's totally possible to live in an unfair universe. Take your slice of life, look out for yourself but then just look out for others when you can which it sounds like you're doing already. 'fairness' is just a concept that emerges when agents are looking out for their own competing interests but mutual cooperation emerges as a biological imperative. That's one way to look at it anyway. But it's happier to look at it as us all helping each other
@chestycougth @admitsWrongIfProven
I simply do not see that there is enough good in the world to outweigh the bad
@OpenComputeDesign
Yeah, same. But ending one's life is awfully tedious and brings harm too, so i guess evasion beats the hammer of justice here?
@admitsWrongIfProven @OpenComputeDesign and it would be horrible for your family and friends to deal with @opencomputerdesigns and considering you said you care about justice it would be an extremely unethical thing to do if you still believe that
@chestycougth @admitsWrongIfProven Yes, I know it would be unjust to kill myself. That's the only reason I'm still here
@OpenComputeDesign @admitsWrongIfProven have you ever seen a doctor about how you feel? You can DM me on WhatsApp or signal if you prefer. I'll write in my email so you can contact me with your number/DM details if you want
@chestycougth @admitsWrongIfProven
No, I don't trust them, and can't anyway
@OpenComputeDesign
Finding someone who is not only qualified on paper but actually a decent person is hard in general. I heard about that from people i know seeking therapy. I can see that this would be hard when you live in an area where there are like three people on every 100 square kilometers.
@chestycougth
I don't care if its natural or not. It's way more important than anything "natural".
Justice is *the* single most important thing I can think of. With freedom possibly second.
@OpenComputeDesign @admitsWrongIfProven
@light @OpenComputeDesign @admitsWrongIfProven Interested to know why you value justice and freedom above all else?
@chestycougth
Why do you value happiness and stoic acceptance above all else?
@OpenComputeDesign @admitsWrongIfProven
@admitsWrongIfProven
Other animals are plenty cruel
@OpenComputeDesign @chestycougth
@light @OpenComputeDesign @chestycougth It's only cruelty if one has the capacity to understand what cruelty is. Lions eat, humans are cruel.
@admitsWrongIfProven
How do you know lions don't understand that their prey suffer when they are killed? Many animals have been shown to be smarter than many humans give them credit for. Like that cow that was filmed scratching itself with a broom. Or the crows that can solve puzzles.
@OpenComputeDesign @chestycougth
@light @OpenComputeDesign @chestycougth Ok, relevant point.
I do not have proof that animals are not sapient, which is also the reason i think i am a monster for eating them.
But i do have proof that humans could care and choose not to.
I have experienced humans showing understanding and, the next day, not caring anymore.
The humans do have a choice, and they usually make it so that they ignore suffering, instad of trying to alleviate it.
I am convinced that humans are cruel because they could care, but choose not to. Not any individuals fault, but a problem with how the whole kind works. We are not ok. I am not excluding myself here, experiencing things is kind of overwhelming.
"The problem really, is that the universe is just really cruel and uncaring."Why do you think the Creator put you in it? To be kind and caring.
Every human has the ability to show compassion and care for their neighbor. Just because many don't, doesn't mean the others can't.
The 'universe' so-called is a composite of everyone's thoughts and choices.
@octade @admitsWrongIfProven @chestycougth
Well, I guess the _real_ problem is that, I really don't actually like people
@OpenComputeDesign @octade @admitsWrongIfProven Neither do I. Once I realised that and I stopped caring whether people would judge me for being that way then it was one of the most freeing experiences of my life.
@OpenComputeDesign I mean that part is completely understandable. I wouldn't like people as stressed as most that are there either, if i interacted with them much.
@octade
Now that's optimism I can actually get behind.
Rebel! Rebel against the cruelty!
Rage against the ecosystem!
@admitsWrongIfProven @chestycougth
@light @octade @chestycougth I'm just sceptical about that creator. Creating something does not mean your motives are benign.
@admitsWrongIfProven
Yeah, I'm not sure about that bit either.
The world is fucked up. If there's a being that created it, it must be fucked up too.
@octade @chestycougth
@light @octade @chestycougth Exactly. Finally someone speaks some sense.
@admitsWrongIfProven @light @octade Yeah I mean this is a classic argument against a 'just god' which most Christians assume to be the case. And I suppose that's why it's worth mentioning. Because most Christians accept their god without considering the cruelty that happens in the world and without reflecting on the theology that must be the case if their firmly held beliefs were true?
@chestycougth @light @octade I think if there were a god we would need to prepare for a fight.
Because caring parents behave differently from what was. If there is a god, it is definitely not a benign one.
@admitsWrongIfProven @light @octade That's assuming that there is a god in the first place who cares about us. If there is no such god then there's no one to fight and we are left to fix our own problems ourselves. And I think that's a more probable scenario than us having to battle a god that our ancestors imagined existed for the last millennium?
@light @admitsWrongIfProven @octade it's why I appreciate Buddhism (without trying to be too preachy)
Buddhism at least accepts that the world is a chaotic mess which is not controlled by any 'god' or 'deity'. It's just a natural world with natural rules that doesn't care for anyone, just as a natural law would do.
@chestycougth
Doesn't it also preach that we should accept said fucked-up world and not have any desire for it to be better?
@admitsWrongIfProven @octade
@light You summed up my misgivings about that approach very well. Thx!
@chestycougth @octade
@light @chestycougth @octade We should blow up the samsara. Obliterate it.
@light @admitsWrongIfProven @octade I mean yeah, if you're looking at Hinayana Buddhism then that is the case. The world will continue to exist and continue to have pain and that will be the case forever. But we might as well try to cut out our own individual suffering even if we can't help others.
Bit then there's Mahayana Buddhism. Which generally says we should make an effort to help everyone even at our own expense because we can never truly be happy if others are miserable.
@chestycougth @light @octade Sounds a bit like trying to get along when real world problems are unsolvable.
Understandable, valid, but what exactly is the point, except what one could accomplish as well by blocking me?
What do you mean to say, is there a point to all this? What is your goal? What do you, individually, want to achieve?
@admitsWrongIfProven @light@noc.social @octade I'm a bit confused. I've only recently started using mastodon and I can't tell if you're directly referring to my last post or of you're referring to a previous post from @light or @octade? Sorry, like I said, still trying to figure out how mastodon works
@chestycougth I was taking up the thread of your thoughts and trying to react to it. It has nothing to do with anyone else's threads, just with what i replied to directly.
If what i said is unpleasant, it is fine to say i should leave you alone, i will honour such a wish.
@admitsWrongIfProven @light@noc.social @octade @light No, I had no issue with anything you said. Like I say, I'm not used to mastodon so I'm struggling to follow the threads of conversations and I might be accidentally replying to something you said that was completely unrelated to what you were originally talking about. I'm used to Facebook and Instagram and such and mastodon seems to function differently so please forgive me
@admitsWrongIfProven @light @octade I'm going to guess you were referring to me. I had no intention of blocking you, I'm not sure where that came from?
But in reply to the general question, I do believe life is a bit of an unsolvable puzzle. I don't believe in any god. Everything that happens to us is by a natural law. We need to find better ways of adapting to hardship than society has taught us and I believe Buddhism can offer some answers although I also believe they can be improved upon
"Everything that happens to us is by a natural law."
This is a passive view of life.
Everything that I confront in this world is changed by me touching it. This is an active view of life.
The consciousness given to you by the creator is your hammer and chisel for your little part of the universe. Your mind becomes action that reforms everything around you. What are you sculpting?
@chestycougth Oh, i guess that was a misunderstanding?
I said "by blocking me" as a general possibility, not a thing you said you would do. i did not mean to say you would, i merely entertained the thought that you could.
The general distinction being that one can try to change things, or try to not be involved. As i am trying now, i am online rather rarely lately ^^
@admitsWrongIfProven @light @octade No, I don't want to block you and I'm perfectly happy to be involved:)
@chestycougth @light @octade I guess my hyperbole overwhelmed your nicety. Please be advised that i do make absurd jumps in thought ^^
@admitsWrongIfProven @light @octade Don't worry about it ;) I'm a little bit tipsy right now so I might be missing some messages and maybe talking some nonsense but there's no harm intended and hopefully no harm done :)
@OpenComputeDesign @admitsWrongIfProven @chestycougth
Are you cruel and uncaring?
If not, then there's still hope.
@rl_dane @admitsWrongIfProven @chestycougth
I probably am, tbh
@OpenComputeDesign @rl_dane @admitsWrongIfProven Well if you really think that's the case then what are you going to do about it?
@chestycougth @rl_dane @admitsWrongIfProven
Avoid people
@OpenComputeDesign @rl_dane @admitsWrongIfProven You better delete your mastodon account then
@chestycougth @rl_dane @admitsWrongIfProven
I actually have left most online spaces I've ever been on, and tried to convince most people I know to forget about me and let me stop talking to them. Some people always refuse to let me leave, though
@OpenComputeDesign Oops. Trying to quit too, relapsing right now... let me say this much: i will never hold any negative thought towards you if you are no longer there. I support your right to be left alone, even if i talk a lot.
@OpenComputeDesign Taking time out to sort yourself sounds good. I hope you get all the time you need, and that it will not be any more unpleasant than it needs to be.
@OpenComputeDesign @admitsWrongIfProven @chestycougth
If you have enough self-awareness to say that, then you cannot possibly be.
@rl_dane @admitsWrongIfProven @chestycougth
People keep saying that, but I really don't agree. Self awareness is not a silver bullet
@OpenComputeDesign Correct. It is not a silver bullet, it is a start. You are starting, and you are working on it. I am proud of you.
@light @OpenComputeDesign @rl_dane @chestycougth
Draft idea:
OCD has been abused in a way we cannot imagine, and is currently trying to sort that out.
We cannot understand until OCD manages to make sense of what happened to him, so anything we do is trying to be nice, but we are too clumsy to actually help beyond showing we care.
Doing well, gang. We do show we care, but we have to be patient.
@light @rl_dane @admitsWrongIfProven @chestycougth
Well, I still waste people's time saying whiny stuff until they try to help, and then insisting I'm beyond help.
I'm also generally very poor at boundaries and stuff and sometimes make people uncomfortable
And, just in general, like NOS was saying about eating meat, I do things that I know are negative, like wasting electricity, buying stuff I don't need even though it supports companies that mistreat people, and not always being kind online
@OpenComputeDesign @light @rl_dane @admitsWrongIfProven We've all been whiny at times. We are all human and over the top sometimes. No matter what you think of yourself, you are still human and subject to the same emotions as the rest of us. We're not always great people and we can all easily do shitty things (and we all always do in some way or another) but when we have support around us then we can always fix whatever is going on and actually start enjoying life for a change
@OpenComputeDesign Hm, being referred to as "nos" sounds weird.
Would you consider calling me the "fart guy", as i spelled out "norfartu"?
I understand all the emojis might be stressful, but hey, being smelly is important to me. It is a way of being seperate from the lying way society usually functions.
What i don't really understand is how you are bad about boundaries? I never experienced you disrespecting any boundary, is there some key experience you are referencing but not telling?
I mean no expectation here, if you don't want to tell that is cool, but i don't understand?
Generally, i think your way of saying "not ok" is ... what i would expect? People need some way to express if something is not ok, and you do? If you were wrong, i would be 1000x ^^
@admitsWrongIfProven @light @rl_dane @chestycougth
Oh, sorry, a lot of emojis don't render properly on my computer
@OpenComputeDesign I'm sure that once you find a way to feel happy and healthy you will be and do even greater things. I don't care about your whining. My guy tells me to tell you to keep going
@OpenComputeDesign @admitsWrongIfProven Buddhists call it samsara. The endless cycle of birth, suffering, death, rebirth, more suffering, and on and on.
But even if we have only one life then the idea of samsara, of the painful cruelty of life and the world is still very descriptive.
@OpenComputeDesign
Technically we don't know that. Maybe somewhere out there in the universe is a paradise where whatever life exists there is not a wolf to each other.
I wonder what the chances of us finding it are. I hope we don't ruin it if we do.
@admitsWrongIfProven @chestycougth
@light @OpenComputeDesign @chestycougth The paradise could be here, humans are just defective since they don't work towards an environment that is pleasant?
@OpenComputeDesign @admitsWrongIfProven It requires a human to come up with an opinion of whether something 'sucks' or not. The universe can exist perfectly fine without you or me, but we are here, existing, without any choice in the matter. So I can choose to believe that earth is a pointless rock, or I can choose to believe it is a beautiful place full of wonders. Either way, no matter what I believe, earth will be totally fine without me. But I choose to take the option that makes me happy.
@chestycougth @admitsWrongIfProven
Well, to each their own. I really don't feel comfortable or motivated to see the good in the world when there's so unforgivably much bad
@OpenComputeDesign
Not hating on bob here, nice point. But it's fine to not be positive if there is nothing positive you can see.
I mean hey, if it smells like shit, feels like shit, maybe it is shit.
It's valid to be pissed off, to dislike.
I guess we just don't understand the specific nature, the point about what is wrong?
@admitsWrongIfProven @OpenComputeDesign yeah, you are right, @opencomputerdesigns, if things aren't going well in your life then it will drag you down. There's nothing wrong with feeling negative, just please don't lose hope.
@chestycougth @admitsWrongIfProven
I try to kill hope whenever possible. It just ends in heartache
@OpenComputeDesign
Hey, that's exactly what i am doing!
I was pretty pissed, but could do nothing, when i thought the world needs to be right, and fair.
I'm still in the process, giving up on "we will do everything right" and stopping the climate catastrope, etc.
But that is not what you are talking about, is it?
@OpenComputeDesign @admitsWrongIfProven The trick is to not care if you get rejected. I've just been to Rone and I tried to speak to a few people in Italian. There were a few people who just shrugged and walked off, but I decided I wouldn't let that put me off trying to speak Italian. And in the end I had some great convos with some lovely people. Point being I decided to ignore rejection and only pay attention to good receptions.
@chestycougth @admitsWrongIfProven
In my case, the potential harm is is all on me. I'm the person I'm worried about causing hurt if I let myself have hope
@chestycougth
I think what others do is relevant, making it easy or hard to enjoy living.
Others, or the whole causality chain into the generational trauma, right?
@admitsWrongIfProven @OpenComputeDesign This is true. But at the same time being aware that people around you are bringing you down can be enough for you to separate yourself from them and go elsewhere. Or if you can't separate yourself from them then being aware that they are bad influences can be enough to be able to consciously block out their influence
@chestycougth @admitsWrongIfProven
Well, I'm definitely the most depressing and abusive person I know. And unfortunately, despite _huge_ amounts of time and effort trying, there's no escaping myself
@OpenComputeDesign
Who contributed how much to you becoming the person you are now?
@admitsWrongIfProven @chestycougth
Personally, I think I was probably born this way. Or at least, was bound to end up this way
"Well, I'm definitely the most depressing and abusive person I know. And unfortunately, despite _huge_ amounts of time and effort trying, there's no escaping myself"
Here's your sign ....
The book is perfect technology. It doesn’t need a battery, it interfaces directly with my brain engaging the “imagination.” It’s portable. It’s sturdy. What more could you need?
"What more could you need?"More books. And coffee.
I figured out a way to hold the stupid molasses jug over the kettle while it takes forever to drain. I'll be fermenting this with wild yeast I captured from some flowers I picked in The Bahamas.
@Mutedog What alcohol are you making?
@ai6yr this could potentially become rum eventually, except home distilling is illegal so that definitely won't happen.
@Mutedog what you making? Rum?
@BigTittyBimbo distilling at home would be illegal so I'm definitely not doing anything like that.
Right. I would never do anything like that. Except in Missouri and Arizona where the laws are sane.
@octade @BigTittyBimbo it's still federally illegal in those states. You're unlikely to get busted in any state unless you're selling it to school kids or something anyway. But of course, I would never do something illegal, regardless of whether I'd get in trouble for it or not. Despite it being a completely moral thing to do.
Right! You would never do that. I would never do that. What kind of whack-job would even think of distilling their own yummy spirits? It makes me glad to pay my taxes and follow the rules. How can those hillbilly hate mongers think they can flout the rules and make their own booze?

@octade @BigTittyBimbo hahaha, thanks for that. I actually have so much spray foam in my garage right now, but for a different reason, I swear LOL
@Mutedog that setup is brilliant in its simplicity! I might have to steal that setup for when I do my maple beer - as I guarantee I’d over complicate it.
@guinnessduck once it was down to drips I put about a quart of hot water from my tea kettle into the jug and got the stuff stuck to the sides all out
SkiftOS : https://skiftos.org/
It's not a *NIX!
"skiftOS isn’t POSIX. It’s a fresh API and userland inspired by Plan 9, Haiku, and Fuchsia. Familiar ideas, different contracts."
Problem: the GPL is poison. It has polluted Linux and the Linux userland software so that only large corporations can afford to monetize it. BSD License or MIT License would be much better allowing small players to produce unique work without then being forced to share their source code with the AI hegemony racket.

@octade there is another BSD licensed kernel that's used by a small player, it's called FreeBSD and that small player is Sony, and yes the improvements they're doing aren't going to the AI hegemony racket! Or anybody else for that matter

The warmongers spent eight trillion dollars to drop bombs on weddings, fatten defense contractors, and provide medical care for maimed soldiers ... but building homes for the homeless and poor would be evil socialism and we can't have that. In effect what is being implied is that we can't build homes for the poor, but we should instead use that money to bomb foreign nations for so-called democracy.
The money spent on military conquest could have built 80 million houses and provided millions of good, temporary jobs in construction.
In fact the money spent on the conquests in Iraq and Afghanistan could have made a quarter of Americans home owners.
The so-called government of this country HATES the people. And it shows. They are thieving, murdering liars and thugs full of active and chronic hatred and malice toward the people. We live in another Catholic-styled dark age, where the tax collectors and creditors rob the people and use the money to sniff out heretics.
I realize it is too much to ask. I realize you will all waste your energy whining about crap that doesn't matter, like entitlement programs and imaginary racism, instead of doing the things that actually build people up, like giving them a roof over their head free of the encumbrance of debt.
The government forces a fragmentation economy on the people that forces millions to move away from their families and home towns just to find work and housing, then calls it 'socialism' to build houses for the people they have intentionally uprooted. Sick. Just sick and evil.
@octade A well intentioned and an admirable proposal. If the houses do get built, how will the homeless and poor survive in those houses? How are the utilities bills, to keep the house warm in winter and cool in summer, going to be paid? How will cost of upkeep of the houses to prevent them from becoming a derelict be paid?
What is needed is gainful employment and living wage. What is needed is to stop the transfer of wealth from the majority to the billionaires and millionaires.
Any reputable journalism organization would fire someone who manipulated a photo this way; many have done exactly that. It’s a shame our government can’t adhere to such a basic ethical and moral code too. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2026/01/beware-government-using-image-manipulation-propaganda
Someone ordered that photo alteration. And someone ordered the manager who ordered it. And someone higher up ordered the action.
The world is full of liars, play-actors, and cynical deceivers. Some of them are so habitual about lying that they don't even think about it. They just do it.

This is a very serious matter, but this article omits some important points.
There must be laws and regulations which require every organization handling sensitive information (not only financial institutions and the like) to have sufficiently secure computer systems.
And there must be regular audits of the latter.
Software engineering must be regulated in a manner similar to civil engineering and electrical engineering with respect to reliability, safety, and security.
From the BBC:
Vastaamo hack: My darkest secrets were revealed to the world
<https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c62nzxqw45eo>
"Software engineering must be regulated in a manner similar to civil engineering and electrical engineering with respect to reliability, safety, and security."I believe that the U.S. military tried to do this with the Ada programming language. It seems they had a goal to make everything auditable and verifiable. I haven't studied it in depth so I can only surmise.
@octade wrote:
«I believe that the U.S. military tried to do this with the Ada programming language. It seems they had a goal to make everything auditable and verifiable.»
Right.
This is an important point.
Indeed the whole story of Ada (now approaching half a century!) is a valuable case study (for one's Unlimited Free Time ™ 🙂).
Not all milk and honey, of course.
But the military know how to take care of their technologies.
Maybe it is clear and redundant to say:
my concern is about civil applications of software engineering.
"Hey, you are making too many different versions of the same thing that do the same thing and with a zillion different unnecessary interfaces and ways to all accomplish the same job. Stick to a simple interoperable scheme that can be audited against a standard."
Many years ago I used to troubleshoot dialup modems. Modems varied wildly in their firmware and AT commands. This caused wild variation in device drivers. And most of that variation was unnecessary. It caused a lot of busy work and wasted time.
A modem should not be a modem. A modem should be a specification. Then devices should be designed strictly around the specification. Apply to all other hardware devices, operating system primitives, boot system primitives, compiler logics and routines, then wash, rinse, repeat ... and things would move closer to an infrastructure that can be strictly audited regardless of the particular implementation.
Anyway consider this a fantasy rant. I don't see it ever happening.
Yes, this is one aspect of this big matter.
Other aspects are, for example, the regulation of manufacturers' responsibilities and regulations about required qualifications to be a software engineer.
I believe that something like this will happen if and when there are acutely bad consequences of a software failure or too many chronically bad consequences accumulate.
While everyone is distracted by the scripted ICE theater the counter-reformation unification of Roman Church and state proceeds stealthily. Rome's agents are slowly converting America to the Imperial Roman religion. This is the true goal of so-called 'Christian Nationalism': the forcible conversion of America to Roman imperial Christianity, a la Constantine and Justinian.
From his bully pulpit the President is proclaiming Imperial Roman religion about their Roman moon goddess Mary, also known as Minerva, Venus, Easter, Astarte, Semiramis, and Isis.
Presidential Message on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception
"In her honor, and on a day so special to our Catholic citizens, we remember the sacred words that have brought aid, comfort, and support to generations of American believers in times of need: Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen."

I wouldn't say 'ruse' since they're very open about wanting to eliminate that, along with the rest of the Constitution.
I'm not sure about the proportions of the various maga factions. There's definitely a significant contingent of maga catholics, but I think the larger faction are the prosperity gospel evangelicals, who align well with the oligarchs. Thiel bridges between both.
In any case, while for now they all band together with a common goal, as soon as they succeed in establishing their theocracy, sectarian warfare will quickly follow.
BTW you can be sure trump didn't write that "presidential message". Maybe Vance, or someone in his contingent.
As of now, the only way to clean media is to go to the static/ subdirectory of your user and delete the unwanted files by hand.

I get email.
@pluralistic I completely agree with the email. "Enshittification" is a term I would have come up at the age of 14 during a period of heightened teenage angst, while still trying to sound far more intelligent than I would have been. It is completely unsuited to a problem this serious and ubiquitous. What's wrong with "platform decay" as listed on the @wikipedia article?
So, apparently younger generations don't have as much generational awareness, because they have access to sooo much more content.
I'm an elder Millenial, and I grew up watching what was on TV, and then whatever VHS/DVDs my parents deemed worthy of purchasing. So, the things I would watch would be newer movies and TV shows, of course, but then also older movies and cartoons, as well. I had a larger range of social references, just because I was plumbing from a shallower well. It seems like it shouldn't work that way, but new content is being made at a unprecedented rate. Not just major studios, and Streaming Services, but things like YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitch. I might watch a Midnight movie from the 70's, because that was all that was on, but younger generations never need to. There's just an endless supply of content from whatever you're into at the moment.
@RickiTarr
In the high and far-off days, every single child would be back in the house in time to watch "The Man from UNCLE" because if you missed this weeks episode, that was it. No repeats or catchup from the 2, later 3 channels we had.
Now the BBC and,for some things Netflix, are bringing that back, so you have to wait until next week.
I like it, the enforced suspense adds to the enjoyment for me.
@Fragarach @RickiTarr Unfortunately a lot of the suspense these days is "will the show get renewed so I can see the ending or will I be stuck with an unresolved cliffhanger?"
@CurtAdams @RickiTarr
Oh yes,the "find out in the next series, coming next year."
Not as bad as running out of storylines and making prequels, for me.
The poison problem with the current information generation is that 99% of the information at their fingertips is lies, more lies, damn lies, filth, pr0n, aggression, slander, gossip, and propaganda nonsense. Social media, news feeds, and even government blotters consist mostly of obese talking cocaine monkeys shaking their rumps in defiance of things they don't even understand.
And the more of this weaponized propaganda sewage they consume, the smarter they think they are.
I encounter people who think the ability to recall verbatim reams of nonsense is a sign of higher intelligence. Somehow the ability to memorize and regurgitate a fantasy encyclopedia is considered to be scientific prowess.

Two features I wish #Mastodon would improve are Lists and Private mentions.
Lists is a confusing feature with no explanation or onboarding.
Meanwhile, private mentions don't align with people's mental model of how sending DMs works.
@malcolm an improved DM interface is on the roadmap for 2026.

@Oregon_Pacifist @malcolm This is useful.

@octade ActivityPub has a subject field. Unfortunately Mastodon decided to use it for CW (Content Warning). @malcolm @smallcircles
I did not know that. So they borked a good feature to generate a self-censorship-oriented culture.
Thanks, #Mastodon!
Designing systems for stupid people yields stupid systems.
The simple answer is the interface and servers should reject statuses with a blank subject field.
ActivityPub should design upward for metadata usability so interfaces can do some productive and compact layout tricks with the information view.

@octade oh most def not. You drink from the toilet tank lol.
Sharing our grief at the state of evangelical Christianity in America, my excellent friend @CharismaticBatman had lamented that very few Christian leaders have spoken out against political idolatry. It's true, but that makes the rare cases so much more meaningful.
Russell Moore was the president of the SBC's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission and was forced out because of his criticism of the Trump administration. Today he's editor-in-chief of Christianity Today. Here's his wiki bio: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russell_D._Moore
John Piper is a huge influence in Reformed circles but wrote a blog post one week before the 2020 election explaining why he would not vote for Trump. He's an older man and genuinely didn't seem bothered to lose his "platform." His article seems prophetic now: https://www.desiringgod.org/articles/policies-persons-and-paths-to-ruin#modal-346-rtqxdfun
Although he's not a pastor or leader, another well-known Christian who has been criticized for becoming "woke" is one of the creators of VeggieTales (strangely, he had hired Eric Metaxas as a script-writer at VeggieTales). He was the voice of Bob the Tomato! Today, he's one of the hosts of The Holy Post podcast. Here's his wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_Vischer
I've never met these people, but I pay attention and remember this kind of stuff. It makes me feel a tiny bit better to know that even a few people of influence have paid a price for advocating for a more biblical and faithful version of Christianity.
If y'all know of other Christian leaders who have spoken out against political idolatry and paid a price, please reply to this post!
Beth Moore (no relation): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beth_Moore
Esau McCaulley: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esau_McCaulley
David French: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_French
@abarker @CharismaticBatman Salute to all these folks, although David French is more like an influential person who happens to be Christian. I may be wrong. I love and respect all of them.
@badbede @abarker @CharismaticBatman does Pope Leo count?
He doesn't have a Wikipedia page, but Brian Zahnd tells the story of his break from military evangelicalism as the pastor of a charismatic megachurch. Not a new thing for him, maybe twenty years now.
@royal @abarker @CharismaticBatman Nah, I wouldn't count the pope. He's not evangelical, nor American (except for where he was born).
But yes! Brian Zahnd is a great example. I remember reading his contributions to Charisma magazine from WAAAAAYYY back when, before it became a looney tunes propaganda rag. "Letters from Babylon" indeed. I don't know if he's paid any price for it, but I imagine a lot of people in Kansas City wouldn't want to hear what he has to say about political idolatry.
@badbede @royal @abarker @CharismaticBatman
I had to do a double take when I saw the name of his church, Word of Life Church. Here in Wichita, there is a congregation and affiliated k-12 school called Word of Life that is…….. DEFINITELY invested in militant evangelicalism/fundamentalism 🤣🤣🤣
@spaceraser @badbede @abarker @CharismaticBatman It's an overloaded name, to be sure.
@royal @badbede @abarker @CharismaticBatman in my city there are three churches with the simple name “Hope Church” and another five or six with Hope in the name.
I’m not normally Mr “your church name should be branded to get you maximum SEO and that’s why it should be completely unique and maybe even a made up name” but cmon guys. What’s wrong with {name of neighborhood} Lutheran church?
@spaceraser @royal @badbede @abarker @CharismaticBatman My favorites are the ones that don't even use the word "church" in the name. There's one local to me just called "The Journey." (Don't stop believin'!)
When I lived in SoCal, I was very amused by a church simply called "My Friend's House."
@ossobuffo @royal @badbede @abarker @CharismaticBatman Reminds me of the bars that have names like "The Library" or "Joe's Place"!
Where you going with the guys, honey? Oh, just gonna spend the evening at the library!
@spaceraser @royal @badbede @abarker @CharismaticBatman I see your “bar” but I read it as “gentlemen’s club”
@ossobuffo @spaceraser @royal @badbede @abarker @CharismaticBatman In my town it was a fad to use a single words not usually associated with churches, so we have Journey Church, Connect Church, Bedrock Church, Venture Church, River Church, Summit Church...
@mgrinder @ossobuffo @royal @badbede @abarker @CharismaticBatman there’s a real life church in my town called Journey The Way church. I think it was a plant or split off of a church called Journey Church but then Journey closed so now there’s just Journey The Way
@spaceraser @royal @badbede @CharismaticBatman I mean, one thing that's wrong with "{neighborhood} Lutheran Church" is that nobody belongs to a denomination like Lutheran-ism anymore.
@abarker @spaceraser @royal @badbede @CharismaticBatman Well, they do, but they try to disguise it. “How do you do, fellow kids?”
@ossobuffo @abarker @royal @badbede @CharismaticBatman
I'm having a difficult time organizing this thought, but I don't think that the general church population is actually as allergic to denominational identity as church growth consultants and anxious pastors of shrinking churches think they are. The young people I serve with want to believe that Christian practice and faith is deeply rooted, rooted more deeply than Reagan-era black suit baptists railing against secular music and democrats from the pulpit. THAT expression has gone out of style, but I think we should probably lean in harder to the identity of "Lutheran" or "Methodist", making clear that having no denominational affiliation just means you have no higher organizational authority than the pastor of the church, not that you're a brand new thing that's never existed before. Non-denoms are generally flavors or factions of Reformed Evangelicalism or Charismatic Evangelicalism anyways.
@spaceraser @abarker @royal @badbede @CharismaticBatman and if you have no higher organizational authority than the pastor, you risk becoming a cult of personality.
@royal @badbede @abarker @CharismaticBatman You all make me happy to be here, and that any exist to help balance this wildness.
Christian Nationalism is Roman Constantinian Idolatry
This political idolatry of 'Christian Nationalism' is not new. Only the wide perception of it is new due to everyone now being plugged into the Internet via their ever-present phones and tablets.
In the 1600s through the 1800s we see the political idolatry was at fever pitch and full swing, giving a host of politically-oriented cults, such as Witch-burning Puritanism, Swedenborgianism, Mormonism, Seventh-Day Adventism, etcetera. Even the Anglican church is an Imperialist political cult and has no warrant or sanction in the Holy Scriptures. It is a 'nationalist' tyranny over the mind. And then we see Islam, which Christians mistakenly believe to be a non-Christian religion. Islam is a Christian heresy, founded by heretical Catholics. Even the name, "Mohammed" is a corruption of the earlier Arabic, "Mahmed" meaning, "Messiah". Islam is an offshoot of medieval Christianity with its Saturn idolatry gone to seed. Islam is a daughter of Babylon, the Judeo-Roman prostitute.
Christianity has always been a politically idolatrous cult. For instance, The council of Nicea was convened by the Apollo-worshiping, Luciferian Emperor Constantine for nefarious and ungodly political purposes. Every bishop who was a political apparatchik showed up, ironing out a fascist version of Christianity that was forced on the empire by the sword for centuries.
The luciferians try to repeat this in every generation in which it looks like Christians will flee the Church plantation for the true body of Christ outside the Church.
Remember, the outer sea court of the temple was for the Gentiles (nations). The kingdom was removed from the inner court and given to them without. Christian authoritarians still have not recognized this.
If you want to advocate for a more biblical and faithful version of Christianity you need to leave behind the Imperial leadership model of the Church. The Apostles and the Reformers warned us about the man of sin sitting in the chair of the bishopric building his tower of Babel using the people (laity) as their bricks.
This thing commonly called, 'Christianity' is the backsliding idol worship of Israel in the Old Testament, brought to life in our current age. Jesus Christ is not a Christian. The Apostles of the Lamb are not Christians. Neither Jesus, nor the Apostles, nor the Prophets would recognize Christianity as legitimate. The sum of all their teachings mark Christianity as an impostor religion of idolatrous customs trading darkness for light.
There is no municipal kingdom of heaven. The kingdom of God cannot be brought about by the force of arms of mortal men. It comes by the Spirit of the Lord, not by the spirit of the world. Everyone pretending to build God's kingdom by inveigling, shaming, brow-beating, force, intimidation, fear-mongering, or authoritarianism, or civil government sanction, is an anti-christ, no matter how much they pretend to worship the Father and the Son and no matter how many zillions of times they claim their names.
In the Old Testament the Father prophesied to us the rise of the Christian world empire and its eventual destruction in the turning of the ages ahead. The Imperialist Christian cult likes to distract from its own wickedness by pretending Islam is the scapegoat, or by pretending Jews are the scapegoat. It might work for a time for their politics but God the Father is not fooled.
"And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities. ..... How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow. Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her."
The 'she' is the Christian Church. She is the harlot Babylon with her many Church babies, a true mother of political prostitutes and abominations of the earth. The Christian church glorifies herself and her system of bishopric authority instead of glorifying the simple gospel of Jesus Christ. Christianity is a machine for perpetuating its own system instead of setting the spiritual captives free.
We can truthfully say to the Christian Church what Christ said to the Scribes and Pharisees of ancient Judea:
"But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven."
In this age the first Adam who fell is the Church, the continuation of temple idolatry on life support. The second Adam who rises is Christ, or Jacob, who will supplant the first Adam as Jacob supplanted Esau in the birthright, as Jacob crossed his arms to swap the birthrights of Ephraim and Manasseh, as Isaac supplanted Ishmael, even as Paul the Apostle told us plainly. God has repeatedly told us how this Christian empire will be supplanted by Jesus Christ in the last days, yet Christians do not see what is plain in the scripture because they want political and spiritual power over other men, rather than being like Christ and humbly desiring to be a servant of servants for the love of God rather than recognition of position.
We learn from the Bible that God doesn't value man's concept of the birthright of authority, and freely supplants the older with the younger, even as he will supplant the older religious and Christian empire of the world with the younger Jesus of Nazareth.

Stumbled upon this golden joke that says volumes:
WinRAR is more profitable than OpenAI.
@chesheer@mastodon.bsd.cafe At least WinRAR is somewhat useful for something. I don't see what OpenAI is useful for, other than literally ruining our world.
@chesheer Hear me out: WinRAR is weirdly beloved, often bought by people who say "this got me through my childhood of sneaking stuff out of school on floppies, thanks", isn't predatory, just guilts you gently.
@chesheer WinRAR doesn't claim it's going to "change the world." It isn't gunning for anyone's job. It has no pretensions of what it is. It isn't trying to lock you into a "cloud-based subscription model." It doesn't even make you pay for it, it just nags you gently and keeps working. It just claims it will compress and split your files and help you recover them (important back in the day with floppies!).
And that's way more earnest than anything being made today.
@chesheer paid for WinRAR. Worked great. Big part of my early usenet life. PAR files gave me a good RAID 5 working knowledge when I was, well, alt.binaries. younameit. Likely still have my receipt.
I have access to AI tools, am directly encouraged to use it, but I just saw in the episode of The Pitt where the AI ambient listening charting app miss hears the drug name leading to a conversation about proof reading. The problem is spell check, grammer check, even reading it won't solve the problem if the provider doing the medication reconcilitation wasnt really paying close attention and just rubber stamps the auto charting. I have been working with medical providers for 30 years, some of them, I know, will phone it in. Others are very good and will use the tool sensibly.
I used AI to ask a work related issue and it did a reasonable job reading public websites for content, but the bulk of the whole answer was a single reddit post, by which I mean directly quoted/lifted. I also have watched someone give a briefing where the language was more complicated/flowery than how they normally speak. So when asked to paraphrase, simplify, explain the basic point -- they just stammered out their grammerly written slop rereading their slide, clearly not even comprehending their "own work". Reminds me I need to hunt down that app and remove it from the network. Unauthorized software installs, GRRR.

Not one, but two, Christmas Eve Releases
Down with the religious patriarchy.
"And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven."
True equality isn’t yet a reality in our Union.
This must change.
Today, we’ve adopted the new EU Anti-Racism Strategy to:
✅ Fully enforce EU anti-discrimination laws
✅ Promote inclusion in education, employment, healthcare, and housing
✅ Join forces at all levels of society to fight racism
For a Europe free from racism, where individuals can thrive, fully participate in society, and help create prosperity. 🇪🇺
@EUCommission Out of curiousity: Does this also count for immigration and border control - and would be politicians, law enforcers or information brokers be penalized if they violate these rules?
Honestly, do you believe anyone will take this seriously after you showcased your racism to the world for the last two years?
@EUCommission Will EU Council members leave X now, where racism is considered acceptable, and engage on other platforms with functioning moderation instead? This would at least show that your strategy is more than just empty promises!
@EUCommission not very credible coming from the genocide brokers. Hopefully one day we can be rid of the EPP to actually make this happen.
@EUCommission You drown brown people in the Mediterranean and support and fund genocides against them.
@EUCommission Presumably, '#racism' includes anti-semitism?
I beg of you *not* to use the IHRA guide to identifying anti-semitism.
It is a 100% pro zionist document that sadly has been adopted by a lot of the West in support of their 'ally' Israel.
@EUCommission we should start by having a more humane immigration policy, eg: defunding the Lybian coast guard
@EUCommission I hope that this would finally mean addressing discrimation faced by Asians at airports where border officers often like to target Asians and make the whole border crossing experience very unpleasant and even humiliating.
@EUCommission 3.
@EUCommission but discrimination is not only about racism. It also is a problem for many people carrying various disabilities or illnesses. And I'm not even getting to topics like discrimination based on gender, self-identification, ...
While I appreciate the initiative, don't just reduce it down to fighting racism (which is important though!) but expand your initiative to fight any kind of discrimination to make real equality happen in Europe!
Thanks for your comment, @BlackWolf.
Discrimination affects many people in different ways. While this strategy focuses on racism, it complements broader EU actions aimed at building a Union of Equality, which also addresses discrimination based on disability, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion or belief, and other grounds.

@screwlisp I won’t be listening to #lispyGopherClimate today.
I went to a protest against ICE in Boston and now I’m going to a square dance.
Be careful. You might be arrested for square dancing in a round room.
