I moved my Mastodon server today from futurist.info to mastodon.futurist.info
I'm not sure I'm federated anymore. My following feed seems messed up. I'm unsure if things work.
Let me know if you see this, and if you iknow of any diagnostic tools I might run.
@jimcarroll a change of server name isnot generally supported and causes lots of issues. Fediverse servers will now see the unique Id of your original mastodon server and potentially refuse to communicate as the domain name is wrong. Good luck.
Sometimes, I wish I lived in a fantasy world where magic was seen as normal, and that channeling powers caused real things to happen, if I had magic like that, I know I'd use it for good. #Books, #Bookstodon
If you haven't yet found 'em, it sounds like the Discworld books are for you. No internal combustion engine, although his last technology book introduced the steam engine. Minimal electricity. One firearm, which gets destroyed. And continent-wide communication by mechanical semaphore towers.
@Uair WHat kind of magic exists? Is it wand magic or wandless? Is it elemental or mental magic? Runes? Maybe fire magic?
All of the above. Plus gods. Trolls and dwarves, who have been fighting for centuries. Werewolves and vampires, who don't. Golems. Elves are evil and banished from this plane of existence,
The primary magical division is between wizards, who have a hierarchical structure built around universities in cities, and witches, who live alone in rural cabins. Wizards do flashy magic. Witches try to do none at all. Terry Pratchett was pretty autistic before mass diagnosis, and most of his characters are gender-queer to some degree.
There's 40 or so books in the canon, and he's really...I was going to say "inventive", 'cuz he is that, but "knowledgeable" is a better description. And wise. Harlan Ellison described him as "the kindest, most fascinating teacher you ever had".
What they are is satire. He created an alternative world. The biggest setting is Ankh-Morpork, an analog of industrial revolution London. What the Discworld lacks is the Americas, so although he sold Stephen King numbers of books, he's not well known in the US.
Oh, and he was proud to be the most shoplifted author in England.
@Uair Hell yeah! Looking them up now.
Good places to start:
Pyramids
Small Gods
Monstrous Regiment
Guards! Guards!
Going Postal
He's my favorite author by far. I spent my 30s basically rereading his books. I'm 50 now and still do, all the time.
@octade Is that a book?
The Creature from Jekyll Island: A Second Look at the Federal Reserve

Upgrading to Debian 13, wish me luck.
Progress reports will be appreciated.
Too much on my plate at this time to try.

So the biggest issue I'm seeing so far is that most games are no longer recognizing my controller. jstest, evtest, etc. say it's connected and works just fine, but the individual games pretend not to see it.
A couple games still work just fine.
Any idea of where I should look to troubleshoot?
@amin Assuming it is a USB device does it show it when you run lsusb?
Correct, yes. And all the joystick testing utilities I can find seem to recognize it, leading me to assume the system itself has no problem with it.
@amin Have you tried multiple games? Preferably a native game to Linux that is standalone.
All the ones I've tested were Linux-native; so far I've found about six games that don't recognize the controller and two that do.
@amin Okay that's good. Is there any similarities for the games that don't see the controller? For example same game engine or framework.
That's what I'm trying to figure out… Most of them seem to include a libSDL2.so (I stripped out a couple version strings that vary) file. But not all…
Maybe something with the version of that file (since SDL handles input) is conflicting with the system? But people've been playing these games on more modern systems than Debian for a good while and I haven't heard of any issues like that.
@amin Dang, I wish I had more suggestions. Has to be something simple. Do you have another system to test on?
Yeah, I think I'm gonna test on another system. But I know it worked on Debian 12 and now doesn't on 13.
Might be worth my testing if it would work on a re-install of Debian 13.
@amin live boot Debian 13 to test maybe?
Yeah, that's on my to-do list.
@amin @adamsdesk I would also do a live boot of fedora to see if it's maybe a kernel thing
I'm just confused because according to jstest, evtest, etc. the system definitely recognizes and can use the controller. And some games can.
@amin That is really odd. Would something like enabling steam runtime in lutris help?
Uh, I don't know, where would I do that? I haven't seen that option. (All my games are linux-native.)
@amin Is it not an option? Thought it was....
Eh, maybe it's hidden because I don't have Steam.
There's a "Steam for Linux" runtime but it requires steam to be installed.
@amin Have you tested https://github.com/Grumbel/sdl-jstest
Yes, it works just fine.
@amin @adamsdesk Some games require a specific version of the library file that may not be made clear. Do you know what version the dependencies were under 12 and now under 13?
@amin @adamsdesk If they are public games maybe we can help try identify details if you post a link.
Here are a few:
https://www.gog.com/en/game/transistor
https://www.gog.com/en/game/dead_cells
https://www.gog.com/en/game/into_the_breach
https://www.gog.com/en/game/spiritfarer
The thing is I know people who've been playing these games on newer systems than Debian with no issues, which makes me think it couldn't be a dependency version issue?
he stock portfolios of more than two dozen members of Congress outperformed the market in 2024.
This isn't due to luck or skill.
Lawmakers can use privileged information to trade stocks while they’re supposed to be working for you.
I just found out "deconstructed sandwiches" are a thing and not to brag but my toddler did it first
I think this gets at something fundamental to the way we experience reality.
There is something very durable about our expectation that tomorrow will be mostly like today.
We often can’t properly understand risks we face until they manifest in our own lives, and by then it might be too late to take mitigating actions.
phunnee!
I have been away from the Internet for at least a couple months. I came to quickly check my feeds and I am sad to have found report of the passing away of a very cool hacker, Thom Miller, known by the handle, Retro Guy. According to his wife Kaylen Miller, Thom died about two weeks ago from pancreatic cancer. He had a years-long struggle with cancer and multiple therapies and surgeries. During all the time of his illness he continued to hack away providing network access and software updates absolutely free to his user base. He was a strong believer in the value of open and decentralized communication for all. His software is simple and awesome, and useful for censorship-resistant communication. (https://gitlab.com/rslight-public/rocksolid-light)
Thom, known as Retro Guy, created the Rocksolid Light NNTP forums and server software. He served the hacker community as a free speech advocate and provider of free speech communication networking. He refused to censor opinions that he found offensive or stupid on the principle of the golden rule. He endured a lot of annoyances to provide service for many. Thom maintained the software for years giving web-based NNTP access to countless users. Thom was always helpful and patient with users needing assistance, even when he was feeling ill and suffering. He pushed through his pain to serve others with something he believed was a necessary tool and blessing for the general public.
I am sad to learn of Thom's passing. He will be missed and remembered. I will remember him by continuing to run his software.

Most events advertised by media and government are fiction. What you see on the Internet and TV is not real. What experts, foundations, agencies, governments, and nonprofits say is never the truth. None of it is real. It is all agitprop. It is all agenda-driven manipulation. None of it has ever been real. There is always an angle or agenda behind the way the information is presented. Those images and sounds and slogans and speeches are NOT reality. It is a false reality offered for you to buy into.
Reality is between you and your neighbor. How you treat your neighbor ... whether or not you treat your neighbor as equal in dignity and rights ... or whether or not you use your fears of government stories as an excuse to hate and abuse your neighbor ... which is why they give you their stories in the first place. By stoking division they can rule you, fleece you, control you, and profit from you.
In the Game of Thrones the Tyrion character was used to tell us who rules:
"What unites people? Armies? Gold? Flags? No. It’s stories. There's nothing in the world more powerful than a good story. Nothing can stop it. No enemy can defeat it. And who has a better story than Bran the Broken? The boy who fell from a high tower and lived… He's our memory. The keeper of all our stories. The wars, weddings, births, massacres, famines, our triumphs, our defeats, our past. Who better to lead us into the future?"
When you believe someone's stories, that person rules over you. The person who crafts the stories that you take for reality has control of your mind and your life. Whoever crafts your reality is your master. They keep ramping up the anxiety to stunt critical thinking and invoke emotional responses and emotional investment in narratives crafted to steer people into doing their bidding.
The Wind and the Lion | Full Movie with Sean Connery
https://youtu.be/D-In3mEfBxg
This movie was filmed before the normalization of brainless Hollywood portrayals of all foreigners as mindless drones. It showed an era of mutual respect and honor codes between adversaries instead of jingoistic 'light of the world' self-worship.
No spoilers. It is too good for that.

I think Fedi feels very grounded and realistic. There aren't as many emo depressed aesthetic posts as there are genuine mental health posts and people who support each other for it. Truly, it is a safe space.
I mean I'm not making fun of emo depressed aesthetics (honestly, they're cool sometimes as long as they don't make suicide jokes — and thus I'm guilty of making them too) but the genuine mh posts do feel more real and comforting somehow, than memes that almost romanticise depression.
@octade@soc.octade.net fair enough, but in some ways this interconnectedness can make you feel less lonely in ways I love computers, for example. I find it sad (okay, not depressing) how I can't really enthuse about it with anyone else besides one-sided yapping irl. Same with linguistics. On the internet, I can bounce ideas with like-minded people, and even those who know more than me.
@octade@soc.octade.net Oh yes, the news cycle is in fact depressing. I try to avoid news whenever I'm online.

Hello dear academic community, I am looking for research, novels, non-fiction, media reports, etc. on "living underground", as in resistance, hiding in repressive regimes, etc. Any material and any region.
Maybe more people are interested in this topic...

I would ask the Christians in Gaza how they have been surviving for 70 years. There are a few Palestinian Christians who now live in the USA. They would be good first-hand sources of information.
@sonjdol @socialscience @histodons @academicchatter Did anyone mention "Walkaway" by @pluralistic? I would say it qualifies.
