OCTADE
@octade@soc.octade.net
OCTADE or OCTAD is a retro word that means either an octal digit of three bits, or an octal octet or an eight-bit byte. Thus an octade, depending on its historical use, is either 3 bits or 8 bits.
OCTADE was used to specify eight bits, as opposed to BYTE which is not necessarily eight bits as the word BYTE could signify any of several numbers of bits.
This yields the retro 1337 numbers of 38 and 83. The number 38 is one more than 37 so a bit more elite a bit cooler. Thus it owns cardinally shorter byterz.
83 mod 38 equals 7, the highest octal digit. 838 mod 383 equals 72 or 9 times 8 which is 8 squared plus 8.
8338 mod 3883 equals 572 which is 72 times 8 minus 4 or 71.5 times 8.
8383 mod 3838 equals 707 which is 88 times 8 plus 3.
I prefer the old word OCTADE to the word BYTE. OCTADE sports a Euro-peon dignity and gravitas like an Internet serf ready to surf the worknet like pwnd peons. This is very true when pronouncing OCTADE with a thick Pennsyltucky Dutch or Yinzer accent. The Bostonian pronunciation sounds like bad beginner German or muffled mumbling of 'lactate.'
OCTADE or OCTAD was also used to describe a poem of eight stanzas.
OCTADE was also used to describe a period of eight years, or two leap years.
OCTADECANAL is a pheromone found in butterflies. It is butterfly perfume. I would not wear butterfly cologne. But I would sell it. Who would buy and wear my snobby smell? With wordplay we can call it OCTADE CHANNEL No. 8 . All rights reserved, ye French odor snooties.

So there's more #AI written articles on the Internet now than there are articles produced by humans.
Thanks, dicks.
And:
Youtube is packed with whatifIronMaidenwasAfunkband type of "covers" and I'm boiling with hate.
I'm making consistent progress on Snacc! You can now export and erase data.
@octade I will work on getting an easy to download public release and get back to you. I'll have to talk to the github manager to unprivate it 😭

I was trying to quote toot that to make a joke. It didn't work. I feel great shame.
@the_etrain it works on its own though. I read it and was like “honestly, same.”
This morning I woke up with "You Remind Me" by Gryffin and Stanaj playing in my head:
Protecting young people’s online safety is incredibly important, but to do so by forcing invasive ID checks, criminalizing AI tools, and banning teens from legitimate digital spaces is not a good way out of this. Well I hear Summertime as blues and, of course, Freddy's Blues is blues.
Sunny is soul and the rest are jazz standards.
Next time you want some hardcore blues try Lil Sonny Boy Hisself.
Can someone explain to me what's the point of bots on the fediverse that just retoot your post if it has a certain hashtag?
Like can't people just search on or follow that hashtag vs following said bot? What's the difference/benefit?
@Mutedog yeah, wonder that too. I already am following certain hashtags, don't need a bot to post it again
@swanksalot @Mutedog I'm wondering if not every Fediverse software can follow hashtags.
Many hashtags exist in multiple forms -- plural/singular, abbreviated/full, variant spellings, synonyms, etc. A bot account can follow and repost all (or at least more) of them where an individual user usually wouldn't think to follow them all or include them all in a post.
(In fact if you do include them all in a post you'll probably get complaints.)
@Mutedog Re: Hashtag Bots
You can put a Bot on a List and exclude posts from main feed. Quite useful for noisy hashtags!
Allowing hashtags in a List would be preferable ...
No Cloudflare. No 2FA nonsense. No cloud surveillance. Your box. Your rules.
@octade They seem to be missing a step in their installation instructions. Between
wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/hestiacp/hestiacp/release/install/hst-install.sh
and
bash hst-install.sh
should be
less hst-install.sh
@octade Do t see an issue with 2fa. What's wrong time based tokens.
Why should my ISP have my phone number? Why should a cloud provider have access to my phone?
Worse, some 2FA schemes require you to install an app on said phone. In that case the 2FA provider has all the hardware serial numbers on your phone, and the app is an attack vector for someone to gain remote access to your phone and its data.
@octade Not how the OTC works its time based and there are foss apps. Apps send nothing to anyone just time and a seed key to give the codes.
We’re back with our biggest #BlackFriday deal - save 62% on Tuta Legend!
This one’s too good to miss 👇
@Tutanota If you're going to web-hosting I'm pretty interested 👀
@CasualObserver @Tutanota
Hello Tuta,
When #Tuta drive is espected ??
Thank You
@Tutanota
What about a password manager?
I would really find it useful and I guess it would take way less investment than cloud storage does, does Tuta plan on developing a password manager in a future?
@Tutanota very tempting. Just when I promise myself to save money.
One suggestion is a solution or integration to simplelogin. That tool is very handy and it has some kinks to work out with Tuta.
@Chiquidrakula @Tutanota
Just started using #tutanote and use it with #simplelogin !!
In mailboxes you add your tuta email.
Then for every alias, you select the new mailbox.
Have fun !
@Tutanota what happened to your previous stance on such discounts?
"At Tutanota we have decided not to join the Black Friday hype. Instead of advertising regular discounts, we prefer a pricing strategy of a fair and transparent low-priced standard offer. To put it frankly, for being able to drop the price on Black Friday, we would have to raise the standard Premium price in the first place."
(https://web.archive.org/web/20220124114652/https://tutanota.com/blog/posts/black-friday-hype/)
@storydragon We hear you. We tried it this way in the past, and, unfortunately, given the current market, we have to offer deals - unless we want the majority to pick deals from competitors. Nevertheless, we try to not over-do it and keep it to a normal level (eg no big pop jumping in your face etc).
@Tutanota Thank you for this explanation.
It does make sense, unfortunately. (Unfortunately, because ideally there would not be a 'go along or be out' market climate...)
@Tutanota Philsophically, I really really wish I could roll with you all. However I just can't relinquish getting calendar events at the OS level, and rendering them in my calendar apps of choice. It's just untenable to let myself get locked purely into your app (which...you should know, it's not the best UI)
I could maybe handled a locked client for email, but not calendars.
@Tutanota I've been a legend for two days now! And legends want the Drive logo in green! Cool choice, please don't change it

Tablets from Lagaba, a town near Babylon, from around 1730 BCE. From left to right: a court order to bring an alleged thief to court; a contract to adopt two children; a family feud; a brother writing to his sister complaining she never writes back; a label to divide barley; and a tablet listing eight silver vaginas, belonging to a wooden goddess statue.
Fun fact: "Eight Silver Vaginas" was also the name of the all-lesbian eight-piece rock band at my college.

what’s one Linux feature you swear by but no one else talks about?
@nixCraft using PSI rather than just system load to see what's creaking https://docs.kernel.org/accounting/psi.html
also, you can create cgroups manually with low level tools and libraries, which is neat if you enjoy messing with chroots and e.g want to limit their resource usage (useful if you compile a lot of things, like on build servers)
@nixCraft find -exec, not 100,% sure but I think it's safer and faster than piping to xargs. An incredible tool for automation.
https://www.eliotlash.com/2011/08/tool-tips-find/
@nixCraft that you can select text and paste it with the middle mouse (wheel) button. The "hidden second clipboard". No key press required. 👌
@nixCraft cobbler for creating customized personal distribution including image creation by provisioning with internet repositories .
And bare metal NetBoot installation .
Maybe rather an Enterprise Linux project. But also for schools and training courses. Available since 20 years . Open Source and free
@nixCraft That the Linux ecosystem is great in exploring new ways of computing. NixOS, Guix, Containers, QubesOS etc.
@nixCraft super+left mouse button drag to move windows around without having to move your mouse to the title bar, and super+right mouse button drag to resize them without having to move your mouse to a corner.
This is something most Linux DEs have had for ages and is still absent on Windows and MacOS. It makes those platforms very frustrating to use for me.
@nixCraft Sysrq keys, those probably saved me from filesystem corruption quite a lot given how many times I broke the userland (my fault for doing crazy experiments, but still😄).
@nixCraft
I don't think there are any Linux (or UNIX) features that no-one talks about, but I like having Caps Lock for compose and I have a custom .Xcompose (easy to edit) that has full Greek (Compose g and Compose G prefix) as well as prime ′ and double prime ″ (feet, inches, minutes, seconds).
both shift = caps lock, either cancels.
All AltGr not just a few.
Also installing multiple desktops means not having to use console if you break one. Install more than one user too.
Local accounts!
@nixCraft
The Flatpak + Distrobox combo on immutable systems. So good I think I’d use this on regular distros as well!
@nixCraft alt dragging/win dragging. I dont know if there is a more formal term for it. The ability in most linux desktop environments to be able to grab or scale a window without precise edge grabs is such a no brainer concept that using anything without the feature feels like chewing on glass.
@nixCraft JACK for professional audio, enabling all cross-connections between any audio compatible software and low latency audio card universal compatibility
@nixCraft Point to focus. I don't understand how windows and Mac users get by with click to focus and auto raise windows.
@nixCraft Compose is incredibly useful, and never saw on other OSes, unless it's own by a linuxian. Definitely a killer feature.
@nixCraft naming each desktop window or app window and call and rise them by key shortcuts . How stupid is MS-Windows since 30 years and let users only select windows on screen by mouse pointer only . Why is it called windows when I cannot address any window precisely in sessions ?
@nixCraft I didn’t see the clear answer already posted so I have to add it… without a doubt the best Linux feature is STDIN/STDOUT (you could argue this is covered under bash/shell, but this is a specific feature)
@nixCraft linux package managers. Linux has been doing software distribution and updates better than anyone else for a long ass time. Except zipper, fuck zipper.
@nixCraft I can disable features I don't want. No more being worried about something that was added that I don't like. I can always just nuke it out of the OS
@nixCraft
Hardware management.
I bought a wireless mouse. For Windows (XP), I had to download and install a 60 MB driver. With Gnunux: plug → play.
@nixCraft outside of "unix is wonderful" in general, where that would apply to say, FreeBSD also, linux specific would be cgroups.
Containers are all fine and good, but cgroups themselves, alongside namespaces, are the real MVP underneath it all, and perfectly usable on their own.
Oh that and procfs/sysfs. Best stuff ever lifted off plan9.

You know, that new Chili’s ad sounds great… But the nearest one is over 50 miles away. Not quite worth the Uber trip. Lol… But I love the way they poked fun at McDonald’s with their newest meal offering.
@countrymetalhead oh sweet bleeding baby jesus what did mcfondles do this time? They had those glazed doughnuts and I called them mcParts.
@philliesfan4 LOL...Nothing they did. Chili's was just making fun of their Quarter Pounder by advertising their own with bottomless chips and salsa and bottomless soft drinks for less than what McDonald's charges for theirs.
@countrymetalhead I have a chilie's near me, but dad doesn't like their food, says its horible.
y'know, I should really get to riding my next exploitation of the blind post, I meant to do a part 2 but never actually got to doing it
Redneck it down a bit. What are you referring to?
@octade it's a blog post I did about a product known as jaws, which I don't really use anymore, and how it is exploitative in some ways. I meant to do a part2, but never got to it.
@octade it's actually gonna talk about some braille notetakers. while mainly focusing on humanware, but also touches a little bit on freedom scientific. because let's be honest, for 2/5thouswand dollars, their support is a piece of shit asshole, and it's just exploitative for big institutions (Colorado DVR< California DOR, etc)

Which features would you want in such a network and its terminal interface?
@octade when I read 'console first', my brain immediately went to console gaming systems and then 'text only' made me want to die thinking about trying to type things with a video game controller and an on screen keyboard 😆🪦
@octade That's basically IRC, isn't it?
People are obsessed with images and video, so most people use the social media platforms. I'm thinking of those of us who are sick of the audio-visual rage outlet and want to read.
@octade Well, along those lines I imagine social web that is distributed with something like BitTorrent in a compressed chunks that are being uncompressed and read entirely locally. Akin to some sort of convoluted CVS, but without conflicts.
Your own additions will be merged like deltas and uploaded to the network.
I believe compressed text shouldn't require too much space and bandwidth.
There's a lot of downsides to this, though. One of them is impossibility to delete anything for good.
I've been kind of hemming and hawing about building a PC for a while now. It would be nice to have a nice work/gaming station, for the very modest performance that I need, but as soon as you start looking into it, specs get wild and the price starts to climb, and at the end of the day, I'm not a computer nerd, I'm just an angry person who hates corpo tech.
And then the Steam Machine got announced.
There's a lot of things on paper that are red flags, primarily that it sounds like it's not the most user-serviceable device.
But Valve has a good track record at this point on the hardware front, and it would be so easy to just get that little black cube that runs linux right out of the box and be done with it.
Fortunately I'll have plenty of time to think about it.
@poorpossum Far better to budget & build your own machine. I did that a few years back and my desktop is now a Ship of Theseus. I replaced the motherboard, power supply, processor, and memory after the death of some hardware, but my video card, mass storage, case, and peripherals continue to march.
It was fun to actually open my machine up and get some thermal grease on my fingers. YMMV of course.
@lemgandi The problem is I am already researching, budgeting for and building my own bikes up from the hubs, and researching and budgeting for and building my own workbench, and researching and budgeting for and building my own desk, and researching and budgeting for and building a new kitchen counter, and the list goes on and on and on. And also working full time. :/ So many things I need to research and build, and at the end of the day... Building a computer is not something I am excited about diverting my limited free time and even more limited bandwidth towards.
Again, plenty of time for other avenues to present themselves, but this is not at the top of my list for hobbies I want to develop.
@poorpossum Wow, respect then. Shrug. There's something to be said for leveraging other peoples'work. I been very happy with my Framework 13 laptop, although it was pretty pricey.
TIL #dunkindonuts Midnight dark roast tastes like burning mud.
As a self-confessed loose leaf #tea snob (and junkie!), I do like dark roast #coffee. But given the opportunity to have this Dunk's dark roast again I think I'd rather just go for burning mud.
Sigh.
@someguy as a tea freak, I find I much prefer the lighter roasts of coffee.
@Mutedog Interesting. The lighter and some medium roasts are far too acidic for me. The Chock Full O Nuts original blend is too acidic and caffeinated for my taste, both as a hot and cold brew, but as a steak and pork rub? Incredible.
But my local grocery store's medium roast "house blend" is richer. Though...I do tend to make it not as strong. I prefer the coffee taste and not the "hot mud."
As far as tea goes, while my go-to are Assam, Lapsang Souchong and Ilam, I've been enjoying the deep, rich earthiness of Pu-Erh.
Interesting how that goes...I prefer a weaker coffee but a *strong* tea.

THIS IS A TEST 💥
Can you see this photo in its entirety or only like a third of it with the rest white? I’m not sure how to correct the issue but I hope it’s not too widespread and am curious to know.
@Catlynn only a third
edit: more like 50%
@Paperposts Oh no, that’s so annoying :( Not sure what to do
@Catlynn Entirety. I’ve come across it before with your posts - when viewing them in the Ivory app. If I ask the app to open the link to the post, the site shows the pictures correctly. I’ve always assumed it’s the server being eager to deliver the image to viewers even if it’s not completely done processing it yet. The viewer (in my case Ivory) just caches the incomplete image. I don’t think it’s anything you’re doing wrong. Probably something the nerdculture.de instance admin has to fix?
now ... yes, i can see this photo in its entirety
@Catlynn I see the whole thing, but for a few months now I’ve had some of your photos come in only partially or not at all. We thought the problem was probably something with our specific instance; I didn’t know some folks on other sites were having the same problem.
@Catlynn
I see a colourful bird on a branch against a background of fuzzy black-darkgreenish-grey-white shapes on a roughly square image. Using the Fedilab app.
Hope this helps.
Thank you for your responses. I don’t want to be annoying and post a bunch of pictures that are just fragments 😣 Will have to figure something out!
@Catlynn Did you change anything about how you share photos back a few months ago? They all came in fine before then.
We were really suspecting the problem might be on our end (on sfba.social) but I created an account on mastodon.social and I sometimes see the same problem. See below.
It's odd because some photos come in just fine!
This part
The billionaires investing in space don't want Star Trek ... they want Dune ... but we got Spaceballs.
Hey y'all. Here's a hypothetical scenario for you. If someone broke up with their ex and still maintained a good friendship with that ex, would you still pursue a relationship with that person if you were interested in them? Or would you see them being friends with their ex as a bad thing and not trust that the romantic feelings were in the past and that you had nothing to worry about? Would you see the ex as a threat? Or do you believe that trust should be given freely until you have a good reason not to?
@Cam As somebody who did this, I see no problem with a couple becoming friends after they break up. As far as my situation goes, I'd consider another relationship with that former boyfriend of mine, if he hadn't had a massive stroke that caused his health to decline massively, and went so far downhill, that he passed away in September of 2019.
@celrock wow. I'm really sorry that happened. I personally think that unless someone does something to violate a partners trust, they should be trusted completely. And that includes being friends with an ex.
@Cam Exactly. We broke it off due to wanting to go see diferent people and not connecting as closely as we once did. We still got along otherwise, but felt it best to just, remain friends.
@celrock well my ex and I broke up because we just drove each other nuts living under the same roof. It was completely amicable. But there were little things about her that I didn't like, and there were little things about me that she didn't like. So we thought it best to end things before everything got really bitter. So that we could at least salvage a friendship out of it.
If there were trust involved they wouldn't be 'ex' now would they?
