OCTADE
@octade@soc.octade.net
OCTADE or OCTAD is a retro word that means either an octal digit of three bits, or an octal octet or an eight-bit byte. Thus an octade, depending on its historical use, is either 3 bits or 8 bits.
OCTADE was used to specify eight bits, as opposed to BYTE which is not necessarily eight bits as the word BYTE could signify any of several numbers of bits.
This yields the retro 1337 numbers of 38 and 83. The number 38 is one more than 37 so a bit more elite a bit cooler. Thus it owns cardinally shorter byterz.
83 mod 38 equals 7, the highest octal digit. 838 mod 383 equals 72 or 9 times 8 which is 8 squared plus 8.
8338 mod 3883 equals 572 which is 72 times 8 minus 4 or 71.5 times 8.
8383 mod 3838 equals 707 which is 88 times 8 plus 3.
I prefer the old word OCTADE to the word BYTE. OCTADE sports a Euro-peon dignity and gravitas like an Internet serf ready to surf the worknet like pwnd peons. This is very true when pronouncing OCTADE with a thick Pennsyltucky Dutch or Yinzer accent. The Bostonian pronunciation sounds like bad beginner German or muffled mumbling of 'lactate.'
OCTADE or OCTAD was also used to describe a poem of eight stanzas.
OCTADE was also used to describe a period of eight years, or two leap years.
OCTADECANAL is a pheromone found in butterflies. It is butterfly perfume. I would not wear butterfly cologne. But I would sell it. Who would buy and wear my snobby smell? With wordplay we can call it OCTADE CHANNEL No. 8 . All rights reserved, ye French odor snooties.

Why on earth was the #ActivityPub protocol even let out the door without a well-specified and mandatory graceful, non-destructive key rotation scheme?
Yes I know the privacy issues. Those are not valid reasons to not have such a mechanism; it's a valid reason to not enable or use one.
What we're stuck with now is a ton of instances with absurdly long, legacy-algorithm keys (RSA-4096) with no way to replace them with shorter/better keys without effectively losing everything ever posted on the instance.
The protocol is only 7 years old! EC crypto was well-established at the time, and should have been the default.
And what happens once everyone has to replace the keys, because RSA is broken by quantum computers (I know, probably 100 years to go)? The #Fediverse will be a wasteland, with no instances trusting anything from any other instance, so all #Federation breaks down.
Sorry if I got some details wrong about what the protocol says. If I get flamed to death for being wrong, then I'll consider that a Good Thing(TM). I've been trying to find a way to rotate/replace keys for a while and all my searching turns up is either 1) confirmation that most people don't know or care about cryptography, or 2) https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/key-rotation-notification/562 - which really isn't helpful.
If it is possible to gracefully rotate the key(s) of an instance/user, there really has to exist some documentation that explains clearly how to implement this in a server and how to exercise it as a server operator.

What you are describing is not what newscard does. The main feature of newscard is to register a NAMED record that displays directly in the terminal. See the pic for the general idea.
Newscard registers a unique name on the network or chosen host. Only one record can have that name. The record is retrieved by name. The name is hidden using cryptographic hashing. The same hidden name generates a different key for the encryption. There are no public keys involved.
When a user knows the secret name the user can retrieve the correct record and decrypt it.
If you install and test the application you will see the marked difference.
Could you show me how you would do the same thing with PGP?

NEWSCARD Publish and fetch permanent named records via Network News
Newscard creates a decentralized, encrypted, named record paste bin.
[git repo] https://codeberg.org/OCTADE/newscard (use most recent version only)
With a single command, name the card, snarf the file and encrypt it.
With another command, push the encrypted file to the public network.
With another short command, snarf a file from the network.
Only users knowing the name [key] of the record will be able to decrypt it.
If a strong passphrase is used to name the file, it will be very secure.
This is useful for quickly snarfing, encrypting, and publishing a text file:
$~: card enc [passphrase] [file]
$~: card put [passphrase]
It is useful for retrieving a text file with just a key:
$~: card get [passphrase]
$~: card show [passphrase]
If and when you want the general public to access the record just share the keyword.
Newscard uses nine (9) (NINE) layers of encryption with OpenSSL chacha20 cipher.
Newscard generates 9 each of: cipher keys, salts, key iteration parameters.
It would be nice if something like this were added to the ActivityPub protocol, such that keyword[@]host.url would do the same thing. Then secret text records could be stored securely for later retrieval or revelation.

The Genesis Abraham is the Future, not the Antique, Primordial Past. Abimelech and Pharaoh are the Christian Church. The Seed of Abraham is in the World Today but not of the Christian World Order. The Deeper Meaning of Abimelech and Sarah in Genesis.
The Book of Genesis is a prophecy about the Christian age. It uses emblems to tell a deeper spiritual story, which is wrongly interpreted by many Christians and Jews to be totally literal history. But Genesis is not literal history--Genesis is the prophetic future!

I wrote this as a ha-ha-but-seriously-yes:
You should only use software you wrote for yourself, never let anyone else touch it. Other Peoples' Code is the work of the devil.
I have been away from the Internet for at least a couple months. I came to quickly check my feeds and I am sad to have found report of the passing away of a very cool hacker, Thom Miller, known by the handle, Retro Guy. According to his wife Kaylen Miller, Thom died about two weeks ago from pancreatic cancer. He had a years-long struggle with cancer and multiple therapies and surgeries. During all the time of his illness he continued to hack away providing network access and software updates absolutely free to his user base. He was a strong believer in the value of open and decentralized communication for all. His software is simple and awesome, and useful for censorship-resistant communication. (https://gitlab.com/rslight-public/rocksolid-light)
Thom, known as Retro Guy, created the Rocksolid Light NNTP forums and server software. He served the hacker community as a free speech advocate and provider of free speech communication networking. He refused to censor opinions that he found offensive or stupid on the principle of the golden rule. He endured a lot of annoyances to provide service for many. Thom maintained the software for years giving web-based NNTP access to countless users. Thom was always helpful and patient with users needing assistance, even when he was feeling ill and suffering. He pushed through his pain to serve others with something he believed was a necessary tool and blessing for the general public.
I am sad to learn of Thom's passing. He will be missed and remembered. I will remember him by continuing to run his software.

Most events advertised by media and government are fiction. What you see on the Internet and TV is not real. What experts, foundations, agencies, governments, and nonprofits say is never the truth. None of it is real. It is all agitprop. It is all agenda-driven manipulation. None of it has ever been real. There is always an angle or agenda behind the way the information is presented. Those images and sounds and slogans and speeches are NOT reality. It is a false reality offered for you to buy into.
Reality is between you and your neighbor. How you treat your neighbor ... whether or not you treat your neighbor as equal in dignity and rights ... or whether or not you use your fears of government stories as an excuse to hate and abuse your neighbor ... which is why they give you their stories in the first place. By stoking division they can rule you, fleece you, control you, and profit from you.
In the Game of Thrones the Tyrion character was used to tell us who rules:
"What unites people? Armies? Gold? Flags? No. It’s stories. There's nothing in the world more powerful than a good story. Nothing can stop it. No enemy can defeat it. And who has a better story than Bran the Broken? The boy who fell from a high tower and lived… He's our memory. The keeper of all our stories. The wars, weddings, births, massacres, famines, our triumphs, our defeats, our past. Who better to lead us into the future?"
When you believe someone's stories, that person rules over you. The person who crafts the stories that you take for reality has control of your mind and your life. Whoever crafts your reality is your master. They keep ramping up the anxiety to stunt critical thinking and invoke emotional responses and emotional investment in narratives crafted to steer people into doing their bidding.
There is a much bigger and long-running situation. The problems didn't start on October 7th. This current crisis has been going on for 3 generations running. Palestinians have been under Israeli blockades longer than some of the people using the Internet have been alive. The small minority Christian population of the region has been living between the hammer of Israel and the hammer of the Islamist militants. Muslims who convert to Christianity face persecution and many have been forced to go into hiding. The big churches there aren't the only Christians. Smaller groups of Christians and the occasional converts from Islam to Christianity have sometimes had to 'go underground'.
Aside from that, the Christian community in Gaza dates back to the 4th century--even before Islam entered the region. Then Islam entered and eventually the Ottoman Empire, and the British Empire. There is along history of the Christians of Gaza dealing with all of that, sometimes resisting, sometimes just resigning themselves to the situation.
Or DexMedia might also ship them to your region if you have a land line.
In my area they mail them to certain neighborhoods where the geriatric boomer brigades and the hippy generation are known to still reside. The last place I lived 4 years ago they still delivered them every year. In my new place they don't deliver to my neighborhood. For everyone else you need to order them, and they are only available for certain areas.
I surmise that the print phone books will never be completely extinct. They are critical infrastructure if the data grid goes down in some disaster. There are still millions of active copper phone lines across the country, and the way they were buried, it should be another two generations before all that copper corrodes. I have lines that are 50 years old and still in good condition. It is just sitting there, waiting in case it is ever needed.

The same with Abraham. There was a man named Abraham who married a woman named Sarah. But the story of Abraham as written in the Bible is not about that ancient Abraham. It is taking the ancient Abraham and using him as a character to invoke an Abraham yet to come. It is about a FUTURE Abraham. Both Jesus and Paul say so ...
[Paul says] "But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise. Which things are an ALLEGORY: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar."
Take careful note how Paul says the story of Abraham is ALLEGORY of the followers of Christ, the New Abraham that Paul is helping Christ to create at that very time.
Hagar is Israel after the Flesh, under bondage to the Law of Mount Sinai. Sarah is the mother of the New Jerusalem, the Israel of all nations born after the Spirit. Thus Abraham was divided into two seeds, one earthly, and one spiritual, and the one would be at odds with the other, as foretold to Eve and the Serpent. So it is the spiritual seed of Abraham that enters the kingdom to come, and the fleshly seed that must be put to death:
"Ye must be born again!"
"Ye must be born of water and of spirit ..."
What flowed from the side of Jesus onto the earth? Water and blood.
"The life (spirit) of flesh is in the blood."
It has been in front of our faces all these centuries, but most have not seen because they did not heed the warnings about interpreting the scripture with vain fables and false histories:
"Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do."
"But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness."
"And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables."
"Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth."
"For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty."
"Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye."

On the Internet and in the media, "far right" means anything even moderately to the right of Josef Stalin. "Far left" means anything even slightly to the left of the Puritan witch burning crew.
Survival is having people, not things. I would trade everything I own for a half-dozen inspired and selfless people in my corner.
So Codeberg is politicizing over the top with what is apparently a juvenile troll prank.
They have no idea who actually sent the offensive message, but immediately blame nebulous and unnamed, "... far right forces ...", showing they have an agenda other than their stated purpose.
The blog post about this incident makes it sound like the Klan was dictating mass casualty battle plans from a klavern bunker on a remote island. The strategy: send offensive English slurs to a server in Germany. Man, these far-right forces sure have their deadly war strategy all ironed out.
I run three external backups. I like BTRFS automated compression. I also like that BTRFS won't run out of inodes like EXT4 does.
If the backup plan is simple to connected hardware, such as whole drive or whole home, making and automating a profile with LuckyBackup might be just the trick you need. If you are pushing the backup over a network link, there will be some tweaks necessary in the CLI.

Or do you have a public link aggregator?
It would also be nice if people shared lists of recommended social media accounts to follow, but not just addresses, maybe a half line of text describing what each is mainly about.
I would ask the Christians in Gaza how they have been surviving for 70 years. There are a few Palestinian Christians who now live in the USA. They would be good first-hand sources of information.
I would be grateful for some answers to a few questions. My host forced me to move to a new VPS and now some things seem off.
I am running the latest commit. I pulled, compiled it and upgraded about half an hour ago.

When I ran snac init on a test instance the generated folders were sticky 2770 and files were all 0660. In the live instance some of the perms were different, probably caused by one of my backups not preserving permissions when I had to move the instance to another server.

It appears that snac has been deleting local posts from the json stream and replacing them with html history files. Or maybe incorrect permissions are preventing them from being read. This causes a broken link from the history html file when clicking the tiny chevron arrows to view the old post. Is is supposed to remove the json files? Or would incorrect permissions cause such a thing?
How may I ensure snac does not remove the json files for posts made on the local instance, and/or troubleshoot the broken links in the history files?
