It feels like there's a new Bitlocker issue every single day...

I'm all for full disk encryption and I try not to be overly obnoxious with constant "but on Linux..." comments, but man, it really is true that Linux handles FDE so much better. 🤦‍♂️

FerroCrypt started a few years ago as a small hobby project. The new version has been rewritten from the ground up and feels much more mature: a pure Rust library, CLI, and desktop app for local-only file & folder encryption, with passphrase and X25519 key-pair modes, `.fcr` files, streaming, and hardened extraction.

If you live in Canada and care about privacy, this is the time to get off your keister to help stop Bill C22. Filling out this one form could help:

If the bill passes and Signal pulls out of Canada, that would be a very bad and sad thing, and it would not be the only horrible consequence of a bad law.

Are there any plans to implement encryption for private messages using a public key attached to the Fediverse account?

I understand that the metadata would not be encrypted, but that would be more than sufficient for many use cases. The decentralised nature of the Fediverse is a major advantage in the fight against censorship.

Bitlocker is a disk feature shipped with . It is designed to protect sensitive data by encrypting entire drives, ensuring that information remains secure, especially if a device is lost or stolen. Many, many, many enterprises use it to protect portable media.

A has just been published, that backdoors completely on Win11. (Doesn't work on 10, previous versions untested.)

Researchers posit that it is a backdoor because it is undocumented, and only enabled on certain configurations.

What does this mean for you as an enduser? If you use bitlocker as your encryption, and someone has access to your system, they can jailbreak it. Is it likely? No.

What does it mean if you're corporate IT? My hair is on fire, my hair is on fire!

The bigger question is: who put the access there and why.

In 2019, Meta committed to rolling out end-to-end encryption across Facebook Messenger and Instagram. "The future is private".

In 2026, that future has been quietly switched off. Instagram direct messages now use only standard encryption, meaning Meta can read message content, voice notes, and images that were previously visible only to the sender and recipient.

This is not a small adjustment. It is a reversal of a public promise made to billions of users, and it has been made with minimal noise and no meaningful alternative offered inside the platform.

The future of private communication will not be delivered by the companies that promised it in 2019. It will be built by everyone who is still committed to it now.
