Newscard creates a decentralized, encrypted, named record paste bin.

With a single command, name the card, snarf the file and encrypt it.

With another command, push the encrypted file to the public network.

With another short command, snarf a file from the network.

Only users knowing the name [key] of the record will be able to decrypt it.

If a strong passphrase is used to name the file, it will be very secure.

This is useful for quickly snarfing, encrypting, and publishing a text file:

It is useful for retrieving a text file with just a key:

$~: card get [passphrase]
$~: card show [passphrase]

If and when you want the general public to access the record just share the keyword.

Newscard uses nine (9) (NINE) layers of encryption with OpenSSL chacha20 cipher.

Newscard generates 9 each of: cipher keys, salts, key iteration parameters.

It would be nice if something like this were added to the ActivityPub protocol, such that keyword[@]host.url would do the same thing. Then secret text records could be stored securely for later retrieval or revelation.

The problem with modern computational cryptography is that it has no 'empirical' evidence of security. The fact that no one has publicly broken a cipher is not empirical evidence. It is absence of evidence being used as evidence.

If an adversary breaks a function or cryptosystem, he is not going to tell you. Thus using the lack of a public break as evidence is not scientific method.

The security models are based upon 'educated assumptions' within model A or B or C. Nobody has ever proven that a cryptosystem is secure. They are 'assumed' to be secure. Or, they are assumed to be hard in the average case.

NP-hardness proof is still an open problem. As far as I know, not a single cryptosystem has actually been proven to be NP-hard. Model assumptions using a supposed NP-hard function and proof are two different things.

As for no existing crypto surviving: Vernam's cipher (OTP) is provably information-theoretic secure if keys are not re-used. That avoids the NP-hard problem altogether as it is a different universe of math.

I drafted a prototype for a PHP server application that automatically hashes and signs files and presents visitors with verification archives containing digital signatures for offline verification. The site allows readers to view, download, hash, and verify signatures of files. Since I occasionally like to publish puzzles and bits of cryptology, I just had to make this to scratch the old itch.

The neat thing about this design is that the current version has zero JavaScript. It uses CSS3 hacks with anchors and URL probing to emulate JavaScript and AJAX functionalities for modal dialogs to present server-side JSON data as HTML text.

When I upload files or documents to the server, the interface automatically presents them to the user in a grid. So now all I have to do is upload files and documents and the server generates the site.

The reader can then click buttons to hash, sign, view, verify, and download files.

GnuPG and OpenSSL Signatures are generated automatically on user demand. The site visitors can download these signatures and the public keys to verify files.

What should I add / change in the application and its interface?

What accessibility components might be warranted?

Should the application parse and present EXIF data, or is that too much?

Hey #encryption experts: has anyone thought about something similar to what three words, but for key fingerprints? This would be a huge #accessibility win. Right now, we have long hex strings we have to compare by hand, and a few visual/barcode type systems. I would love to be able to just verify "Correct Horse Battery Staple" with a friend. Easier to hear with a screen reader (b and c and d and e can sound similar in noisy environments when you're in a hurry), and of course none of the visual systems are really workable. @cryptography it would be a great idea to use #aes 256 for the #encryption for this task, but the problem is that aes (even in a secure authentication mode such as #gcm ) is static. this would revive the static problem. sure, more secure than the current key generation setup, but it's still static. and that means the NVDARemote server still has to have the key in order to work correctly.
any compromise of the NVDARemote server itself means that your key will be exposed. forget the compromise vector, even a rogue server administrator (something a cupple of NVDARemote servers are known for doing) can see the static key, hence why i want to use #public #key #cryptography for this project.

at some point, i'd love to work on an implementation of the #screenreader of NVDA #nvda #remote / #nvdaremote where rather than using a 6-digit key that can be guessed, it uses #asymmetric #cryptography that genrates #encryption #keys using an algorithm like #rsa / #ecc (eliptic curve cryptography) in order to secure the connections. how it would work is you setup your connection. then, you'll get an encryption key for your session unique to that session. then, you give the user of the computer you want to control or who you want to control your computer the key. once both sides disconnect, the key automatically / automagically expires. it would be like a public / private keypare, where the key is stored on the server terminating the remote session (E.G. nv.seedy.cc, poweredge-r720.featherback-firefighter.ts.net) while the private key is stored on the machines connected to it. and optionally, a passfraze for the key to protect access even if that person has the key, sourt of like how #ssh public/private keypares work.

"Health data is increasingly an important part of law enforcement or government investigations. Wearable data has been critical in a number of cases, where information about heart rate and steps was used to determine the whereabouts of individuals. And the surveillance company Penlink calls fitness trackers and wearables an “overlooked source” for law enforcement since they tend to show movement patterns and changes in heart rates. Law enforcement can try to get access to this data through subpoenas or warrants.

There are many potential privacy issues with these sorts of devices, including whether the companies who make them share or sell information to third-parties. But here we are choosing to focus on two facets we’re concerned with around health data itself: 1) whether the company shares information with law enforcement and governments and 2) if they offer end-to-end encryption, which means the company itself can’t access that health data to begin with."

Apple says it would rather pull iMessage and FaceTime from the UK entirely than comply with new surveillance demands. Under the amended law, companies must clear security features with the government before release and scan encrypted messages on request.

Notice what makes that threat possible: Apple is a company with a headquarters, a server, and a product it can be forced to change or withdraw.

"In recent years, the Signal messaging app has become a newsroom staple, enabling journalists, colleagues, sources, and others to speak to one another securely with end-to-end encryption. This means no one except those in conversation — not even the service provider — can read your messages or listen in on your calls. Journalists use it individually, and we also see a trend toward using organizational Signal tiplines.

But it’s important to understand this is not a ”set it and forget it” decision. When talking to sensitive contacts, you do need to maintain your account to ensure it is safe and does not fall into the wrong hands.

Imagine if someone took over your Signal account. They could impersonate you, causing reputational damage, or worse, putting sources at risk. Unfortunately, this is not a hypothetical. We have seen at least one public example (and some less public) where newsrooms have lost access to Signal identifiers, sometimes leading to abuse.
