What Normals is
A forum that keeps the parts people keep asking for from Reddit, LinkedIn, Quora and X, and leaves out the rest. Communities and threads, questions with an accepted answer, and a profile that is an alias with optional verification. Your reputation comes from what you answer, not from what you announce.

Federation
Every community is an ActivityPub Group. People on Lemmy, PieFed, Mbin or Mastodon can follow it from their own instance; their replies land in the thread here and replies from here go back to the origin. That is also why you already see threads from lemmy.world and mastodon.social in several communities: they are mirrored, and you can read, comment, vote and interact with them as with any local thread.

Moderation
Global rules are three lines. Each community governs itself. Every moderation action goes to a public log with its reason, and removals can be appealed. No shadow bans, no automated removals.

Your data
Every thread has a permanent, server-rendered URL. There is an RSS feed for every community, tag and user, and a one-click export of everything you wrote. No ads, no AI training on your posts, AI crawlers blocked. The core is closed for anti-abuse reasons; the federation module will be published.

Settings
You control your feeds, notifications, followed hashtags and communities, and personal blocks. Post analytics and profile stats are under your profile.

Mobile
It installs from Chrome on Android with push notifications. The mobile layout still has rough edges; fixes are coming.

What I need from you
It is small and it is early. If something breaks, tell me in this thread. If a community you want does not exist, say which one. If you are a moderator somewhere and want to run a community here, say so.

I see a way to improve activitypub. Build an extension that does not require servers. Instead it would use servers for discovery of running clients.

Everything else would stay the same except clients can identify by a public key hash instead of domain name.

This would allow single-user local clients to sync directly or through a instance relay with other local clients when they are online, as well as with public domain-based instances. All posts, media and objects could be stored locally as files instead of using a database engine. This would also make it simple to run clients over TOR.

Think about it.

It would blow NOSTR out of the pond.

The obstacle to this is the mandatory HTTPS requiring use of certificate authorities. The client-only version would have to drop this and use public key of user accounts to secure transfers.

I just now found a self-hosted fediverse server that allows connection and administration via SSH. So far its setup instructions are the simplest I've seen for any ActivityPub server software.

0. The first line of moderation should not be the instance admin. Each user account should be able to moderate mentions of their ID, or replies to their comments.

1. The top poster of a comment thread should be able to moderate all reply comments under that thread.

2. Instance admins should only delete posts that are clearly designed to offend, hurt, or viciously attack, bully, harass, gaslight, annoy etc. but should never delete a post simply on ideological grounds or heated but honest disagreement or debate. Telling the difference is very simple in almost all cases: tone and mindless repetition being the biggest giveaways of the respondent's intent. If it becomes an unwanted or unproductive argument the top poster should be able to quash replies.

3. Users should be able to click a button to block and entire thread regardless of who posts to it.

These things are not a major problem for me since I'm on a simple instance and I can add users to my personal blacklist via CLI. It would be nice to see this kind of stuff as standard, basic button functions in activitypub and fediverse since not everyone wants to run an instance and use CLI scripts to moderate.
