This is something that stems from the bulletin board system period.

When people started to Flame each other they were just banging at the keyboard

    BBS flame wars

What happens now {last 20 years} is the same; they can only be horrific towards each other when banging at the keyboard.

I've been told that people in industrialized countries can be very lonely. Hundreds of them in a building but they are still lonely

Often that loneliness is portrayed in a negative manner on public internet forums by people who often live a miserable life. Some of them in the US many, can also not pay for the psychiatric care they need.

The end result is a mess of a comment section

From "Social Media" to Social Movements...

Social are more than just Tech or Software:

you've done great work for social media but we need help to redevelop socialising itself:

      - not only as media or storage.

      - help move on from 1-way .

At some peak level of software we jump from a tree of development to a tree of development:

      To Develop:
      How to socialise / .
      How not be of others.

      To achieve a Techno-Social balance!

Title says: Social Movements are more than just Tech or Software.

Picture of 2 trees to indicate the transition away from just a software development tree to social development tree.

You might be interested to check out my posts around the concept "Community has no boundary" I talked about 5 years ago, e.g. in this topic: socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/

When I was still facilitator of I claimed that it wasn't a community in any real sense, with mostly driving by on self-interested motives. It was just a discussion , where a poor commons janitor (me) had to do the unthankful volunteer upkeep.

"Expectation mismatch" plays an important role when anyone mentions "community". A "community-driven project" is partly the formal that is in place, but mostly implicit cultural aspects. Knowing what you can expect is important, to not get disappointed.

A instance to me isn't . I only use the Home timeline.

As we navigate fedi we 'weave' in and out of seamlessly, without realizing it. A rich concept of inter-community networking is possible, I think, but it should be carefully designed.

I just now found a self-hosted fediverse server that allows connection and administration via SSH. So far its setup instructions are the simplest I've seen for any ActivityPub server software.

An experienced YouTuber said the following

              • When you published something on the Internet any reaction is a good reaction
              • If someone attempts to troll you shower them with love and affection
              • Trolls hate Love and will run back under their Bridge
              • If someone reacts extremely negative see rule number one and silently thank them

The fact that a person reacts to something written by someone thousands of nautical miles away is a feat which should be cherished

One of the things people talk about with age verification is that teens are sucked in and need to get off. That's not what's happening.

I have addressed this idea before in some detail although I don't remember where to find my screed. Here's the gist of my ancient long-winded musings.

                    0. The first line of moderation should not be the instance admin. Each user account should be able to moderate mentions of their ID, or replies to their comments.

                    1. The top poster of a comment thread should be able to moderate all reply comments under that thread.

                    2. Instance admins should only delete posts that are clearly designed to offend, hurt, or viciously attack, bully, harass, gaslight, annoy etc. but should never delete a post simply on ideological grounds or heated but honest disagreement or debate. Telling the difference is very simple in almost all cases: tone and mindless repetition being the biggest giveaways of the respondent's intent. If it becomes an unwanted or unproductive argument the top poster should be able to quash replies.

                    3. Users should be able to click a button to block and entire thread regardless of who posts to it.

These things are not a major problem for me since I'm on a simple instance and I can add users to my personal blacklist via CLI. It would be nice to see this kind of stuff as standard, basic button functions in activitypub and fediverse since not everyone wants to run an instance and use CLI scripts to moderate.
