An historian, Nicole von Germeten, on the male code of honor in the Spanish Empire c.1600:
"In theory, honor was a burden to a man, a moral standard to maintain and to protect the reputation of himself and his household, but in practice, men might act immorally as long as they did not attract too much publicity.
"Honor was not a code that elite men lived by or aspired to, but something invoked after the fact [if they were prosecuted]."
She also discusses some men who acted admirably (in my opinion), such as a governor who legally intervened to protect an enslaved woman who was tortured by her "owner." But interestingly, the governor didn't cite honor as his justification for doing something good; while the torturer did cite honor, since (in his view) the woman had to be punished for violating sexual norms.
Fascinating stuff! #masculinity #honor #history #patriarchy #books
