To all those who are sick

I’m getting old. I’m officially in my senior phase now. The next phase is ‘elderly,’ and after that, death and translation to heaven. It’s remarkable how fast this life went. It really is a vapor. Things I remember clearly like ‘that new show Hawaii 5-0 reboot’ started 16 years ago. The movie Jaws which startled me so much is 50 years old. When I think of movies being that old I think of old black and whites like It’s a Wonderful Life. But that one is now 80 years old! Metropolis, that old masterpiece, is almost 100 years old. Yes, time flies.

With senior seasons of life come health challenges. It seems like a lot of people are having health challenges now. This summer I had some things pop up for which I needed to see a doctor. This was unusual for me. Normally I only go once a year for my annual checkup and that’s that.

So, in addition to being reminded every day that “life is a vapor” (James 4:14), aging also reminds me that this flesh is but flesh, transient, subject to the curse, and not meant to last. Only our glorified bodies will last, but we have to wait for those. The flesh is just a body of death waiting to break down until we die.

A while ago I made an order at Chapel Library. One of the pamphlets I’d ordered was called Christ and Lazarus: Comfort in Sickness and Death, By Robert Murray McCheyne. When I ordered this I did not know I’d need a doctor this summer, but the Lord did. I find the pamphlet a comfort. Here are some excerpts. “Of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha” (v. 1).

Bethany is a sweet, retired village, about two miles from Jerusalem, in a ravine at the back of the Mount of Olives. It is at this day embosomed in fig trees, and almond trees, and pomegranates. But it had a greater loveliness still in the eyes of Christ—it was the town of Mary and Martha. Probably the worldly people in Jerusalem knew Bethany by its being the town of some rich Pharisee who had his country villa there—or some luxurious noble who called the lands after his own name; but Jesus knew it only as “the town of Mary and her sister Martha.” Probably they lived in a humble cottage, under the shade of a fig tree; but that cottage was dear to Christ. Often, as He came over the Mount of Olives and drew near, the light in that cottage window gladdened His heart. Often He sat beneath their fig tree telling them the things of the kingdom of God. His Father loved that dwelling, for these were justified ones. And angels knew it well, for night and day they ministered there to three heirs of salvation. No wonder He called the place “the town of Mary and her sister Martha.”

After that introduction, McCheyne spends a bit of time explaining why Christ sends sickness. I’ll post only the headings but be assured he explained more fully with verses:

The reasons why God sends sickness are various:

1. In some it is sent for the conversion of the soul.
2. Sometimes it is for the conversion of friends.
3. Sometimes it is a frown of judgment.
4. Another case is now before us: that of a child of God sick, (Lazarus) that Christ might be glorified in him.

“Lazarus was evidently a child of God, and yet Lazarus was sick. How he had come by his grace we are not told.“

Not how McCheyne calls illness “a grace”. This belief is hard for unbelievers to understand but it is true. A friend of mine is a paraplegic, made so in a high school football game. He said it is a grace and he would not trade it. He said he has seen and received much grace due to his condition.

But when illness comes “Learn not to judge others because of affliction.” And, “God’s children should not doubt His love when He afflicts.”

Even if the affliction continues long and hard, do not lose hope. Christ’s love is in it completely. Though you may be in pain, or adjusting to a new life circumstance, or even seeing it in others, such as the sisters Mary and Martha watched their dear brother sink, don’t doubt the love of Jesus.

“And so with Christ; He bends His eye most tenderly over His own at the time He is afflicting them. Do not doubt the holy love of Jesus to your soul when He is laying a heavy hand upon you. Jesus did not love Lazarus less when He afflicted him.”

Such afflictions, conditions, or illnesses spark the most fervent prayer in us. McCheyne-

Learn that urgency in prayer does not so much consist in vehement pleading as in vehement believing. He that believes most the love and power of Jesus will obtain most in prayer.”

Jesus sent word that the sickness of Lazarus is “not unto death”.

A word of promise: “This sickness is not unto death.” This was an immediate answer to prayer. He did not come; He did not heal. But He sent them a word enough to make them happy: “This sickness is not unto death.” Away the messenger ran, crossed Jordan, and before sunset perhaps he enters breathless the village of Bethany. Good news! “This sickness is not unto death.” Sweet promise! The hearts of the sisters are comforted, and no doubt they tell their joy to the dying man. But he gets weaker and weaker; and as they look through their tears at his pale cheek, they begin almost to waver in their faith. But Jesus said it, and Jesus cannot lie. If it were not so, He would have told us. “This sickness is not unto death.” At last Lazarus breaths his latest sigh beside his weeping sisters. His eye is dim, his cheek is cold, he is dead. And yet Jesus said: “Not unto death”! The friends assemble to carry the body to the rocky sepulcher; and as the sisters turn away from the tomb, their faith dies. Their hearts sink into utter gloom. What could he mean by saying, “not unto death”?

Are your hopes sinking: Is your faith weakening? Is your trust in Jesus wavering?

McCheyne: “Learn to trust Christ’s word whatever sight may say.“

Do not allow grief, pain, heartache, or affliction to prevent you from approaching Jesus. His throne is open to His children. Come often, come boldly, come believing. He may or may not heal, but the belief is in His power to do good to those who are called and love Him. The belief is in His sovereignty, that His will is perfect. That our flesh wastes away but “this sickness is not unto death”. That no matter the outcome, even amputation or paralytic or memory loss, we WILL be restored and that restoration in glory will be forever.

Or perhaps He will heal and you come out the other side saying, yes, I prayed, yes I believed, yes, it was a grace from our beautiful Savior to be so afflicted.

A thought on beauty and meaning

I had a thought about literary structure and its relationship to meaning, prompted by the texts we studied this week for Bible study (John 2:1-5 and John 19:25-27).

Sometimes, it seems, a literary feature like a chiasm or an inclusio or alliteration or something of that kind doesn’t have any meaning beyond itself. It’s there just because it’s beautiful, and that beauty is good and pleasing in itself.

But sometimes these literary devices do mean something, in the sense that they communicate something to us beyond what’s being said directly, said in so many words. And it struck me that the “bookends” created by the appearance of “the mother of Jesus” in John 2 and John 19 are one of those times.

Those bookends seem to point us toward the idea that the task of “the mother of Jesus” is to bring Jesus into the world. Practically and physically, obviously, but also over and over again, pragmatically and spiritually. In John 2, she brings Jesus into the world by prompting his doing of his first sign. Then, in John 19, she brings Jesus into the world by accepting the role of mother to the nascent body of Christ, the new community created in Jesus’ redefinition of mother-child relationship from the cross.

The literary bookends are beautiful, yes. But more beauty emerges in the unfolding of this meaning, which is also … beautiful.

This is deadly Imperial Roman dogma being proclaimed from the Presidential bully pulpit.

The Roman "Mary" is Isis of the Egyptian trinity. The Roman "Mary" is NOT the Miriam who gave birth to Jesus of Nazareth. The Roman "Mary" is also known as Astarte, Easter, and in Babylon as Semiramis. The Roman Church pasted a "Mary" nametag on its pagan idol, then by the sword of Constantine and Justinian forced all Christians to worship this idol.

Anyone who can actually read the Bible can see that the 'immaculate conception' of a 'sinless mother of god' is nowhere taught in the Bible. But it was taught in Babylon, Greece, Egypt, and Rome. The trinity is a pagan idol having nothing to do with the God of the Bible. Trinity worship is the chiefest of things the true God of Abraham despises. The trinity is a hoodwink to trick Christians into worshiping the old serpent and insulting the divine Creator.

The Bible is clear on who God is:

"Hear O Israel, the Lord our God is one [echad:singular] Lord alone!"

This is the first great commandment of the Law of Moses. Upon this one commandment hang all the Law and the Prophets.

Then in the Decalogue given at Sinai a similar command is given:

"Thou shalt have no other gods before me."

In the Hebrew of this phrase, the word BEFORE is means REPRESENTING. Thou shalt have no other gods REPRESENTING me. Notice he says GODS in the plural, as Israel just came out of Egypt where there was a trinity of gods.

The next commandment is a further condemnation of the trinity:

"Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:"

In the religion of the trinity, the father reigns over heaven, the mother/son/daughter/hermaphrodite reigns over the earth, and sometimes the third person of the trinity reigns over the waters. We see this with the Sumerian Anu, Enlil, and Ea, who are copied by the Romans in varying forms, for example as Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva. In this one command the God of Moses is rejecting this form ot trinitarian worship, saying he alone is God, and he is jealous against all idolatry of this trinity demon.

Why did the first commandment need to be about God being one or singular?

Because Israel just came out of Egypt where the god of Egypt was a trinity. So God founded the entire law of Moses on a complete rejection of the trinity. The first commandment that God gave to Israel was to HEAR that he is SINGULAR.

Jesus Christ also rejects the Catholic Trinity:

" And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent."

Out of Jesus own mouth he says that only the Father is God. More over, he says that the Father is the "ONLY TRUE GOD" showing that Jesus knew there was a false god--the trinity of the Grecians and Romans that came from Egypt that came from Babylon.

The Christian religion is an organized insurrection against Jesus Christ while claiming to represent him. Jesus warned us that many would come in his name, and that they are all liars:

"All that ever came before [representing] me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. ..... But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep."

We have 30 thousand sects full of hirelings who teach you to worship their false trinity idol. Christ's sheep reject this idol and follow the true shepherd, who teaches that the Father alone is God. Jehovah, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, is the only divine being that has ever existed. There is no other. There is no 'god the son' or 'god the holy spirit'. There is only and ever GOD THE FATHER in heaven.

Only Jehovah is God. Jehovah does not share his glory. He shares his life. He shares his wisdom. He shares his titles. He shares his power. He shares his authority. He shares his property which he created. But he does not share his GLORY, his right to be known as the only singular God and Creator. And he especially does not share his glory with idols such as the Roman trinity.

Everyone worshiping the trinity is an idolator, just as ancient Israel committed idolatry with the trinity of Babylon and Egypt.

The Demonic Trinity of Rome was the Capitoline Triad:

The Capitoline Triad was a group of three deities who were worshipped in ancient Roman religion in an elaborate temple on Rome 's Capitoline Hill (Latin Capitolium). Babylonians worshiped a trinity:

Moses, the Prophets, the Apostles, and Jesus Christ of Nazareth rejected the trinity idol of the nations. All of these men gave glory to singular god whom they called, Father. So ask yourself why Christian preachers are teaching you to worship a trinity when the God of Abraham and Moses declares himself to be SINGULAR.

The answer is simple: The Christian religion is a centuries-long insurrection against the kingdom of God, masquerading itself as the kingdom of God. And this is what Genesis tells us about the kingdom of Nimrod.

The Father created Jesus Christ as the only valid image of deity that men can bow to. Humanity is always bowing to idols of their own making, both physical and mental idols. The Father in Heaven HATES this. He met mankind halfway since mankind is incapable of worshiping what he cannot see. So the Father made an image of himself in the man Jesus Christ, and commands us to bow to that man as God's face or representative. This in no way makes God a trinity nor does it make Jesus a person in a trinity. It makes Jesus a man, like any other man, who was chosen and formed to be the image of God. God solved the idolatry problem, yet to this day the Christian religion persists in denying God's mode of worship and substitutes their idolatry in place of what God commands.

Jesus is the Image of God. Jesus is the Son of God. Yet Jesus is neither God nor God the Son. That is a clever trick of Rome to fool people into worshiping their ancient trinity deity.

I am doing some research on the nativity of Jesus of Nazareth. I am looking into the many sectarian traditions and scholarly opinions on this subject.

I would like to get hermeneutic opinions and off the cuff opinions on some groundwork questions.

1. What actual year do you think Jesus was born?

2. How old was Mary when she was married?

3. How did Mary conceive?

4. What is the significance of his birthplace?

5. What is the significance of the Magi who sought him after his birth?

6. Why was it necessary or significant for an angel to tell Mary she was going to conceive?
