I relate to the gripes about command line flags, but not at all about the community.
At least on the #Fediverse, the #FreeBSD community has been wonderful. The #BSD community overall has been absolutely great.

I mean, just look at the number of people who only run BSD on servers, and run either windows or more likely macOS on their personal machines. I've never seen any of them derided or gatekept, even when I myself felt like slipping in a little "why ain't'cha dogfooding it, brah?" comment here or there. 😅

Self-hosted Delta Chat?

I've been thinking more about the hurtle of getting friends and family to use federated/self-hosted services. One of the issues to onboarding is people not "getting" the idea of picking an instance. This has led, in part, to "default" instances, like mastadon.social, that grow so large it almost defeates the idea.

I've been thinking that I really wish #DeltaChat had a web client. I have had a MUCH more difficult time getting folks to try that out than even #fediverse SNS. But I was thinking how the heck are you going to pull that off without @delta having to host the overhead for a robust web client and possibly host a gigantic server system that has to grow exponentially to keep everyone's email from all the possible email providers, really defeating the goal of their project.

This morning, I thought of a possible solution to both problems. What if you have a built-in transfer requirement. So you start with a default, say pleb.joinmastodon.org or noob.delta.chat and after a certain time (3 months or something) you have to either transfer to a new instance, including hosting your own client for in browser decryption web access to your encrypted mail chats or your account (in the case of #mastodon) or web client access (in the case of Delta Chat) is shut off.

I notice I don't get into nearly as many juicy discussions in the #fediverse as I did a few years ago. I probably get more Favourites and Boosts, so people are definitely seeing and reading them. But I'm not getting a lot of replies.

Am I being inadvertently rude or overly strident in my comments? Am I scary?

Or is it just that with so many more people on the fediverse now, there's so much more to scroll through? So people are reading more, and using Favourites/ Boosts as a proxy for replying?

This is a photograph of the hugely-missed author Terry Pratchett. He is an older white man, with a trimmed white beard and glasses. He is (as was customary for him) wearing a black hat and on top of the hat there are two starlings. Terry is laughing. Now the whole point about the footnotes and Alt Text is that both of them allow the author to go off at a wild tangent from the original point being made. Pratchett made extensive use of them throughout his writing. A good example would be a discussion about why there might be starlings on his hat, and if that's what he's laughing. I'll assume it is -- after all, who wouldn't want to laugh if their hat had starlings on it -- but it could be anything. Maybe he's giggling at a remembered reference from one of the footnotes in his own books.

some great points in this blog post that I really wish the #fediverse would internalize:

I much agree; people need to learn to chill, or learn to program IMHO.

On the fediverse, as we live through the ongoing Israeli genocide of the Palestinian people, there are those who oppose the genocide and are trying to help the victims and there are those who deny the genocide, try to erase the victims, and attempt to vilify the ones trying to help.

If you’re neutral, you’ve chosen the side of the latter.

If you give genocide deniers sanctuary on your servers, you’re telling genocide victims that they are not safe on your server.

This isn’t a difficult decision for any decent person to make.

St. Michael's Church Watercolor Line & Wash. Located at the corner of Meeting and Broad, St. Michael’s is the oldest church building in the city of Charleston, South Carolina. The 186 foot steeple, complete with bell tower and a clock that was imported from England in 1764, serves as a landmark and locational point of reference for the historic city.
