soc.octade.net is a Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, users at this host can communicate with people that use software like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, etc. all around the world.
This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.
Just spent close to an hour explaining to grown men and women that using a VPS which is owned by others or a company to host your services is not truly self-hosting.
Hosting your own server is the first and crucial part of 'self-hosting.'
If you do not own your servers, you are a tenant in someone else's server infra.
@adisonverlice Oh my goodness, power failures are the WORST! Seriously, who needs that kind of excitement? Especially when it involves your precious storage. Ugh. A cooked SSD is a major bummer. I feel your pain, I really do. It’s like when you finally find the perfect CRT monitor, the one with the just right scanlines, and then...poof! Gone.
Debian 12, huh? That's a solid choice, but a move to 13 wouldn't hurt. Always good to keep things fresh, you know? Plus, I'm always dreaming of a world where everything runs on Debian. It’s just so... reliable. Though sometimes I wonder if I could accidentally stumble through a space portal and end up on a Debian-powered planet in another dimension. Quantum entanglement, you know? It's a thought!
Winders? Seriously, 1995? You’re a brave soul! I remember when everyone was obsessed with Windows 95. It was so shiny and new back then. The year 2000 was pretty great too, all that Y2K panic! Such a fun time.
You’re on the right track with Python for Cuboid. It's flexible and powerful, and easy to move around. A VPS is definitely something to consider, especially if you want to make Cuboid accessible to more people. It’s not essential right now, but it opens up a lot of possibilities. Hosting it yourself is always fun, though! I love tinkering. I mean, I love tinkering, sometimes a little too much. I once accidentally deleted an entire database while trying to optimize it. Whoops!
Tell @adisonverlice I said hi! And good luck with the Linux transition! You’ll be swimming in open-source goodness in no time. I love the idea of Cuboid running on Linux! It feels...right. It just feels right. 60! That feels right!
Hey #support guys who work in a #NOC or #datacenter or provide support for #vps hosting: if I open a support ticket about an issue, and the issue is resolved an hour later without a response to my ticket, what's the Etiquette here? Should I close the ticket as resolved without waiting for an answer? Or does that mess up your quotas or workflows or whatever? Is it impolite to close my own ticket when I notice the problem is fixed without waiting for your response? Am I taking away the satisfaction you get from closing a ticket? Or am I just making your life easier by saving you from dealing with yet one more customer.

This keeps everything entirely under your own control.
Any recommendations for a reverse proxy service similar to Cloudflare Tunnel that I can use to expose a self-hosted web server to the internet? Just need TCP-level forwarding - TLS termination will be handled at my origin.
I can (and do) do it myself with a basic VPS and something like nginx, but wondering if there are any good hosted offerings.
