Wait, dead mic?

Alright, it is in fact Sunday-morning-in-Europe but I am elbow-deep in setting up some machine over the world's slowest network connection, so if you're into that this is that. Just building and . ( , and ) (and but there's no accounting for taste).

at some point, i'd love to work on an implementation of the of NVDA / where rather than using a 6-digit key that can be guessed, it uses that genrates using an algorithm like / (eliptic curve cryptography) in order to secure the connections. how it would work is you setup your connection. then, you'll get an encryption key for your session unique to that session. then, you give the user of the computer you want to control or who you want to control your computer the key. once both sides disconnect, the key automatically / automagically expires. it would be like a public / private keypare, where the key is stored on the server terminating the remote session (E.G. nv.seedy.cc, poweredge-r720.featherback-firefighter.ts.net) while the private key is stored on the machines connected to it. and optionally, a passfraze for the key to protect access even if that person has the key, sourt of like how public/private keypares work.

      Problem:

You have a remote, headless computer that is running @tailscale and that needs to have its Tailscale binary updated. If you "ssh" into the host, and do e.g. "apt update; apt upgrade" when it comes time to replace the Tailscale binary you'll lose your TCP connection. The upgrade will happen but you'll lose the link and you'll just have to hope that you can get back in correctly.

      Solution:

Use "mosh" instead of "ssh" to connect to the system that you want to update. It uses the same auth system as ssh but the actual connection is over UDP and it's very, very tolerant of temporary loss of connection. Losing the connection briefly does not interrupt the mosh session the way that ssh would drop.

        STEGODON

I just now found a self-hosted fediverse server that allows connection and administration via SSH. So far its setup instructions are the simplest I've seen for any ActivityPub server software.

I don't know what's more stupid: using different authentication flow depending on whether you have a `.pub` file in addition to the private key or not, or suddenly starting to reject one of the two valid RFC 4252 workflows.

                  Oh joy, pre-auth libssh2 RCE.

Edit: fortunately it looks like sshd is not impacted, and it requires a malicious server for exploitation.

New key creature - now it's just ordinary hanging from branch, without any unnatural/fantasy features. It's tail was obviously visible in terminal.

Cartoon style drawing of a lemur, hanging from tree branch, back down, belly up with free hanging striped tail. The branch is just drawn as isolated on white background, without rest of the tree. There is pale gray double circle, fading in upper half, around lemur's body.

Small cut of screenshot with black terminal with white characters, displaying ssh key randomart. Shape made of random characters are similar to lemur from the first picture in its body pose.
