If you're about to complain that #Gentoo developers aren't handling some issue you care about fast enough, let me remind you this.

First of all, the vast majority of us (if not all) are volunteers. By "volunteers", I mean that even if we get some compensation for our Gentoo work, it's not enough to make a living. Which implies we need to have another job, which quite often is a full-time software-related job. So what we're talking about is spending long hours working on software for our dayjob, and then working even more on Gentoo. And quite often Gentoo isn't the only #FLOSS project we're working on.

Secondly, we're having to deal with tons of #slop. Now that almost everyone and their grandmother learned to love the slop, they're pouring it all down the funnel on us. We're seeing multiple times more software releases than before, and we have to handle it. It wouldn't be that bad if it was just about release rate; but we're also seeing the other implications of slop: high code churn, verbose useless descriptions, and of course regressions. We're humans and we need to spend our real human effort to deal with all this semi-automated crap.

And thirdly, in case you haven't noticed, this week's been a nightmare for anything #security related. Many of us needed to deal with the fallout at dayjob, and then with the fallout in Gentoo. Even with all the effort we've already been putting into making things secure-by-default and overriding bad upstream decisions (like bundling CA certificates), there's still a lot of problems affecting us, and a lot of work to be done. Especially that we want to future-proof stuff.

So yeah, I'm sorry that your request isn't being handled timely.

The joke is painfully apt. *Many* people use LLM-gen-AI to take software from their most hated programming language into their favorite — just 'cause. It's #disturbing.

I've tried this with (well written) #Perl code to #Python, & I definitely got #slop out when the work is human-unattended.

LLM-gen-AI can *help* a human do translations tasks, of course, but the temptation to “never look at code not in my favorite language since I have LLM-gen-AI” is dangerous.

So I've finally copied my music to the phone, and then discovered that the #Fossify media player (which was supposed to be simple) has all the fancy media library features, except it doesn't have the most basic feature of letting you go through a directory tree and select a directory to play. The best you can do is either run along a flat tree of all directories (which isn't very good when the immediate directory name is "Disc 1") or through artists and albums (which doesn't work when the tags are imperfect and both discs get merged into a single album with interspersed tracks).

So I went to #FDroid. Unfortunately, it's quite filed with #slop already; everyone's got their awesome "simple" music players, which are all the same kind of useless shit, and also don't have this most basic feature. Well, finally found two that somewhat work; not that either really appeals to me.

So I'm getting fed up with #spam on #Gentoo #Bugzilla.

A while ago we've introduced a timed block on new accounts posting URLs. It helped for a while. But now someone actually bothered implementing a dedicated tool, and we're getting a daily create-wait-post loop. I can't think of a really good way of getting rid of this.

So far I was thinking of:

• blocking new accounts based on the predictable e-mail pattern (they're just going to switch patterns, also may hit real users)
• limiting URLs pasted to an allowlist (this is going to suck hard)
• requiring manual request for every account via IRC (this is going to be pain for us, for users, and a lot of people just won't bother)

It really feels like whatever we do, it's going just to cause pain to us, to our legitimate users, and the spammers will just slop their way around it.

And on top of that, every comment posted is fucking #slop. Totally meaningless sentences added to random bugs, in the hope that we're too stupid to see that they've just spammed us.

I hate this timeline. Can we do Butlerian Jihad now, please?

10 seconds long (a limit on a lot of the free generators) the cats don't seen to be visually tracking the ball (this is the big tell, anyone who has cats knows the laser focused tracking look) and the ball does something weird at the end.

Can't say for sure though, but would love to know where the later got it from.

I feel that #Gentoo #GURU is getting much less interest since the change of rules.

Not sure if that's a bad thing, given how much of the interest we're getting are people who just made a slopware and now are aggressively pushing it to all the distributions they can find. Re: tmux in OpenBSD, false positives are possible, because the tool is just looking at filenames and metadata, not actual file contents. If they're copying source code from a slop project, but not the metadata/commits, then it will give you a false negative.

In the meantime, #GitPython, the package that used to be dead (because the author is busily working on their next great thing) is now slopping out 4 "security" releases a week, as their #slop machine is busily fixing unintended variable expansion in every single URL they call. Unfortunately, they probably don't have enough tokens to fix them all at once, so instead all downstreams have to deal with the churn of endless security releases.
