What if, says a small child to me this afternoon,
We made a poem without using any words at all?

                When the music dies
                and there's nothing left to sing,
                when voice fades to night...
                in absence of words worthy
                of melody, what is left?

                Breath, alone, is vain,
                and poetry's want becomes
                the soul's starvation;
                waiting, in tuneless wonder,
                watching the death of beauty.
