Yesterday my wife and son and I saw a pair of bald eagles flying up a creek that winds through a marshy elk wallow. At golden hour right before the sun went behind the ridge. Miles from anything, in perfect silence. Breathtaking.

Since 2005, when we moved back to #Pennsylvania, we've seen #baldeagles in the wild more times than I can count. We explained to the boy, born in 2008, that before that year we had NEVER seen them outside of zoos.

We told him about Rachel Carson, Silent Spring, Nixon being shamed into establishing the #EPA, about #DDT eradicating malaria in North America but then almost eradicating raptors of all species. He gaped at us, speechless, but golly you could see the gears turning.

Happy *real* Independence Day for American Pedants! Delegates from 12 colonies voted in favor of independence on 2 July 1776. (New York abstained from the vote, but for some reason they still get a stripe on the flag, smh.) Then the "Americans" published their Declaration on July 4.

Despite the name "Continental Congress," a bunch of Britain's American colonies weren't represented at the meeting: Nova Scotia, Barbados, Newfoundland, Quebec (British since 1763), Jamaica, the Bahamas, Belize, and others. Would they have supported fighting for independence too?
