    “Beschirmt” (Shielded, shaded, protected)

    I’m not sure if the German meaning includes non-umbrella shading, but here’s a covered bridge shaded by trees as its roof and walls protect it from the elements. This is Zook’s Mill Bridge in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. According to a historical plaque, it was built in 1849 and survived being submerged in more than 6 feet of water during a tropical storm in 1972.

    A stretch of country road leads to a wooden covered bridge that crosses a small creek to a green tree-lined bank on the other side. On the near side, the bridge is flanked by a tall tree trunk on the left and a spread of leafy green branches on the right, which cast their shadows on the road and shade half of the bridge from bright sunlight. The creek reflects the trees on the far side and the cloudless blue sky above.
