Just got 20 "lorem ispum" merge requests on gitlab for an old repo of mine from four years ago. The merge requests are created in my name and predate the existence of the repo itself. Very unsettling.

      What the actual fork.

Just when I thought #GitLab couldn't stick their foot in their mouth any harder.

GitLab CFO, Brian Robins, says they are “aligned with the goals of DOGE, because the company’s software tools aim to help people do more with less. What the Department of Government Efficiency is trying to do is what GitLab does.”

You either support fascism or you don’t. It’s binary. There’s no gray area or “aligning.”

        Considering GitLab? Don’t.

        Use @Codeberg instead.

Welp. I've been using GitLab for over a decade and have been pretty happy with it. Deployed and maintained several instances, some personal, some for small hobby orgs, some for work.

But it looks like it is time to ditch GitLab for good:

You could do the weblord thing and get a $20/yr cheap VPS then try:

            Forgejo: https://forgejo.org ...

"Forgejo is a Free Software platform for collaboration and productivity in software development. It offers a familiar environment to GitHub users, easy installation and maintenance, and a focus on security, scaling, federation and privacy."
... or cgit, which is very fast and slick for the barebones portal ...

... codeberg has a nice setup (via forgejo) if you don't want to self-host.

Uuugh, now I need to find a replacement for gitlab, since they're all-in on slop, too.

              > Software will be built by machines, directed by people. … The supply of deep technical problems is multiplying, and the engineers who can solve them will be among the scarcest and most valuable talent in the market.

System76 founder Carl Richell says Colorado’s SB26-051 may be amended to exempt open source software, including OSs, repos, and containers. 🏛️
The change follows advocacy, but wider state and federal proposals still risk verification rules that could limit open access and user control. 🔐

What's the big deal with this worming supply chain attack?

Well it seems that the attackers may have forced GitHub and NPM into inaction.

The worm is designed to take revenge on infected users if too many of the infected packages are taken off NPM or if GitHub takes down the stolen user data.

So in the mean time that means us developers and users will need to stop and remove the infection as quickly as possible ourselves to protect your systems.
