that was just an intermediate step, nine.testrun.org was offered as a stable relay, choosing randomly could end up in using a poorly maintained relay that got abandoned and then you or your family would be left like "Delta Chat doesn't work anymore"

anyways, good news! finally since the release 2.62.0 nine.testrun.org is no longer the hard-coded relay! now 3 random relays are chosen and used! so if one goes down the others will be used without ending up with a dead relay, and further improvements will come in this area, as replacing relays that stopped working automatically, learning new relays from the ones used by your peers etc.

so in fact Delta Chat right now is at the peak of #decentralization, way above #Matrix, #XMPP, #Mastodon and any other decentralized platform, because it is not only decentralized but it is "multi-homing", in other decentralized platforms if your server dies your profile is lost and you have to start all over, in #DeltaChat you can have several home servers at the same time and even replace them on the fly while keeping all your chats, contacts, messages, groups, channels, etc. your profile lives in your devices, not in any server

I would like a #sysadmin dashboard as a #deltachat app.

I figured very quickly how to send notifications through delta chat... I'm sold.

But, do you think a dashboard with current alerts / recoveries sent by a bot would be feasible? It doesn't have to be interactive (actually I'd prefer no interactivity)

I'm not very fluent in web tools...

@whynothugo I don't find xmpp so nice of a protocol for several reasons and design choices, but let's be honest, if even #DeltaChat managed to repurpose #email (#smtp + #imap) for chatting and make a nice well integrated cross-platform multi-profile and multi-device supporting client, that on top of that doesn't even make your profile depend on a single server,

I think we don't really need more protocols, xmpp is good enough (anything that just sends encrypted blobs around is good enough actually), and someone could have done the same what Delta Chat did but using XMPP protocol, probably just for sending messages around, without using quite some of the bloat / polemic features of XMPP, like groups depending on the server where you create them and ending up being unencrypted, etc. (in Delta Chat groups are always encrypted forever, encryption can't degrade)

sadly no one did that so far

#deltachat is now evolving for 9 years. Among the currently active 15-20 contributors a majority joined 5+ years ago, with some joining in the very first year and a few only joining last year.

Patience and perseverance is underrated when it comes to producing something that challenges the status quo of centralized mainstream messaging. Several competitors dropped out by now while many of us feel we are only getting started.

@oemb1905 No, we are not deprecating using self-hosted email servers with #deltachat ... there are in fact many different types of email servers in use today. However, using Delta Chat as a cleartext email client (especially when you have other email clients reading the same inbox) is not a goal anymore, at least since the V2 releases last year. It's all about end-to-end encryption and using servers in a simplified only-INBOX way, all standards based: https://github.com/chatmail/core/blob/main/standards.md

@oemb1905 @arcanechat I did a quick test between 2 of my own devices. My iPad could initiate a call to my linux desktop/flatpak. But could the linux/flatpak initiate to the iPad? No. Maybe the flatpak's permissions held it back somehow? Both are using the same Deltachat server.

I think the audio/video call functionality isn't well-tested in #Deltachat yet.

Calls to and from linux/flatpak <-> Android was good, but you can't pick the webcam. Deltachat in #Linux (flatpak) only wanted to use my poor-quality built-in webcam, not the far-nicer USB webcam.

So iPadOS is the "stinker": it can initiate video calls, but not receive them. It's right up to date: v2.59.1

No stun/turn problems on my Deltachat server!

@oemb1905 @arcanechat I've got #Deltachat v2.59.1desktop for linux from flatpak. The audio and video calls are only usable in one-on-one chats. A phone icon appears in the upper right. Clicking it reveals a sub-menu with "Audio Call" and "Video Call".

This also applies in Deltachat for Android: no audio/video call in group chat

there are several reasons!

first of all, it is the app closer to #WhatsApp appearance that has a multi-platform client with feature parity, you just have to tell people "install Delta Chat" the story is much more complicated with #XMPP

also when moving from one device to another, with #DeltaChat you can import backups from android into desktop etc. this is just not possible in xmpp since backups are not compatible across clients

#matrix server is super expensive/bloated, while you can host +1k users in the cheapest VPS or Raspberry Pi you find

when you host chatmail you have literally almost zero maintenance: accounts get created and removed automatically, messages get also wiped automatically, you don't need to handle account deletion requests etc. server storage is kept low

in matrix and xmpp clients if the server goes down or your server account gets removed you have to start all over in a new profile, you lose all your chats, messages, contacts, etc. with delta chat you can easily migrate servers without losing anything, your profile lives in your device and is owned by you!

you can also use several servers at the same time with Delta Chat meaning if one goes down it doesn't matter you keep receiving messages, this alone set it in a completely different league compared to matrix or xmpp

in matrix a lot of group metadata lives in the server, and in xmpp if the server where you created the group goes down, the group is lost, not even people in other servers can keep chatting in the group, is a big centralization problem

ofc, software and protocols can change, but this is just the reality today, I would not use xmpp or matrix for my family chat when what I get with Delta Chat is a much nicer user experience and much more resilient

➡️ Schritt 1: Download & Installation

Unter https://delta.chat/de/download finden sich Download-Optionen für verschiedene Plattformen: GNU/Linux, Android, iOS, macOS, Windows und auch Ubuntu Touch. Wer unter Android das freie Repository F-Droid bevorzugt, wird fündig. In dubiosen proprietären App-Stores ist #DeltaChat notfalls auch vertreten. Herunterladen und installieren wie gewohnt.

➡️ Schritt 2: Inbetriebnahme, Profil einrichten

Bei einer frischen Installation ohne Profil wird #DeltaChat direkt fragen, ob man ein neues Profil erstellen oder ein vorhandenes einrichten will. Wähle in diesem Beispiel "Neues Profil erstellen". Nun kannst Du einen Namen festlegen, unter dem Dich Deine Kontakte kennen (oder kennen lernen), auch ein Profilbild. Dieser Name muß nicht eindeutig sein und läßt sich jederzeit ändern. Wenn Du das voreingestellte Chatmail-Relay nine.testrun.org nutzen willst, bist Du nach einem Klick auf "Profil erstellen" schon fertig.

➡️ Schritt 3: Kontakte einrichten

Da #DeltaChat ein dezentraler und anonym zu nutzender Messenger ist, existieren zwangsläufig keine zentralen oder sonstwie öffentlichen Verzeichnisse von anderen Nutzenden. Privatsphäre und so.

Wenn man sich gerade direkt in die Augen schaut, können sich diese Menschen via Anzeige eines QR-Codes und Scannen desselbigen verknüpfen. Okay, den technischen Part sollten die Geräte übernehmen. Easy.

In anderem Fall kann man sich über den Austausch eines Links verknüpfen.

Dann kann es auch schon losgehen mit der Chatterei.

ℹ️ Und nun noch ein wenig mehr Informationen. Hintergrund und so.

▪️ Chatmail-Relays sind spezialisierte Mailserver, die die Zwischenspeicherung von Nachrichten übernehmen, wenn ein Gerät gerade offline ist. Diese Relays werden gern durch Spenden finanziert. Man kann auch ein eigenes Relay aufsetzen oder eine IMAP-Box für diesen Zweck verwenden.

Auf diesen Chatmail-Relays erhält ein Profil eine interne E-Mail-Adresse und es wird etwas Speicherplatz vorgehalten für die erwähnte Zwischenspeicherung von Nachrichten (im Beispiel nine.testrun.org 700 MiB, chat.adminforge.de 500 MiB).

Man kann auch mehr als Relay mit einem Profil verbinden. Nachrichten werden dann auf allen Relays empfangen. Zum Senden wählt man ein aktives Relay aus.

▪️ Die eigentliche Speicherung Deiner Nachrichten passiert auf Deinem Endgerät. Hin und wieder eine Sicherung durchführen, empfiehlt sich daher nicht nur hier.

▪️ Zweitgeräte hinzufügen geht direkt aus der Erstinstallation. Beide Geräte müssen sich im selben Netzwerk aufhalten (also z.B. im heimischen WLAN). Auf dem neuen Gerät wird dann kein neues Profil erzeugt, sondern das vorhandene Profil über "Zweitgerät hinzufügen" verknüpft. Das erste Gerät zeigt hierzu einen QR-Code an, den das zweite Gerät scannt. Im Anschluß synchronisieren sich die beiden. Danach sind beide Installationen gleichwertig und unabhängig voneinander. Wenn ein QR-Code-Scannen nicht möglich ist, kann man einen Code in die Zwischenablage kopieren. Praxistipp: Richte #DeltaChat erst am PC ein und scanne dann vom Smartphone. Wird meist einfacher sein.

▪️ Weitere Profile kann man nach Bedarf einfach in #DeltaChat hinzufügen.

▪️ Grundsätzlich schadet es nie, durch die Einstellungen zu gehen und für die eigenen Vorlieben anzupassen.

Übrigens, man kann den Kontakten auf dem eigenen Gerät einen eigenen Namen vergeben, wenn man will.

I've used DeltaChat for about 7 years. I even managed to get a few family and friends to install it for a while, so we the built-in AutoCrypt would encrypt our emails. But none of them stuck with it.

Until recently DC continued to be a great mobile app for my personal email account. However, the devs are slowly moving away from supporting my use case, in favour of DC being a client for dedicated ChatMail servers. Which leaves me scratching my head as to its utility.

➡️ Ein Kontakt mit normalen E-Mail-Adressen ist nicht mehr vorgesehen, wenn ich das richtig sehe. Korrekt?

➡️ Ob ich ein (öffentliches) Relay einsetze oder eine für #DeltaChat separat eingerichtete IMAP-Box, macht keinen Unterschied. Auch korrekt?

➡️ Wenn Relays Daten nur zwischenspeichern, wird alles auf dem Endgerät gespeichert, korrekt? Also ist eigene Datensicherung angesagt. Synchronisieren sich mehrere Endgeräte vollständig?

➡️ Wenn eine E-Mail-Adresse nicht mehr als Identifikator fungiert, sondern ein OpenPGP-Fingerprint als Nutzerkennung, ist ein Hinzufügen und Kontaktieren von Leuten nur über einen Einladungslink (wahlweise als QR-Code) möglich. Korrekt?

➡️ Telefonie läuft nur zwischen zwei Teilnehmenden, korrekt? Läuft das direkt Peer-to-Peer zwischen den beiden Endgeräten? Ein Mail-Relay oder eine IMAP-Box dürfte bei Audio/Video-Telefonie nicht zum Einsatz kommen, richtig? Welches Verfahren wird technisch genutzt? Unter den Spezifikationen habe ich da nichts gesehen?

quite some other projects try to solve "offline communications" by using Bluetooth but I think this is very unpractical for anything that is not looking like an IRC or SMS app

but if people setup local interconnected wifi hotspots and build a mesh network in the cities/towns then you can have a something much more interesting while not draining everyone's battery

enabling people to do things like this and becoming truly resilient and autonomous

A really interesting and practical project from the #Guardian Project called #ButterBox is worth knowing about.

ButterBox is a portable, fully offline device (usually running on a Raspberry Pi). When you turn it on, it creates its own local Wi-Fi network. Anyone nearby can connect and access a set of tools without any internet connection:

• An offline app store (based on F-Droid)
• File, video, book and educational content sharing
• And most importantly — secure encrypted chat

What makes this project especially powerful is its deep integration with #deltachat The ButterBox team uses the MadMail server to run a local Chatmail Relay inside the box.

Users can create an offline account with just a single QR scan or one tap and immediately start using fully end-to-end encrypted messaging. Even when there’s no internet at all, messages, groups and files can be exchanged securely between people.

This is where DeltaChat really shines: decentralized, no central servers, real encryption, and designed for difficult conditions.
Combined with ButterBox, it becomes a genuine tool for secure communication during internet shutdowns, in remote areas, or in crisis situations.

It’s a pity that this project still isn’t widely known or deployed in Iran. The good news is that it’s completely open source and can be set up with a regular Raspberry Pi and an SD card. Pre-built images are also available, which makes the process even easier.

For anyone interested in privacy, offline communication, and tools that keep working when the internet goes down, ButterBox is one of the most valuable projects around right now.

In the drop-down menu, there is something like "show all the locations". What is it please ? Does that mean that #ArcaneChat or #DeltaChat can see and stick the user's locations ??

Good news among the bad news!

If the recent #0day attacks against Linux kernel+servers were launched against #chatmail relays, privacy of chatting with #deltachat is preserved. Why? Because we already assume the server could be actively hostile, and still not read or see any avatar, names or messages.

Since the March 2.48 zero-metadata releases relays/servers do not see cryptographic identities, and get no chance to launch "machine-in-the-middle" (MITM) attacks.

it is a chatmail client like Delta Chat, and yes you can use your Delta Chat account in ArcaneChat

#DeltaChat utilisé avec l'appli ToDo List, pour la liste de courses partagée, c'est sympa, mais pas super efficace. Souvent ça met du temps en à charger.
Bon, c'est pas la but de DeltaChat, alors tant pis. Mais conséquence : j'ai toujours pas réussi à trouver aussi bien que google keep pour les listes de courses partagées avec ma compagne. C'est relou. (Surtout de confier sa liste de besoins à google, alors qu'on a pu virer google de presque toute notre vie numérique).

After I was arrested, I decided to change the way we promote and introduce DeltaChat. Until then, we had always presented DeltaChat merely as a communication channel for when the internet goes down in Iran, and people used it exactly for that reason.

But now that DeltaChat has drawn so much attention in Iran, and even someone like me has been arrested for promoting it, I think it's much wiser to shift our content strategy. Instead of portraying DeltaChat only as a way out during internet blackouts, it's better to introduce it as a practical, everyday tool.

Honestly, getting back into this kind of work is very difficult for me. But still, I genuinely believe it can be very helpful and I feel I have to do it.
My goal is for ordinary people in Iran to use DeltaChat for its actual features and built-in tools, not just as an emergency app. Ultimately, I want DeltaChat to become a mainstream, everyday messenger here in our own Iran at least here and maybe, just maybe, even help people in other places too. But well, that's exactly the big challenge.

this prototype is incredibly awesome and working way too good already!

there was some #Tauri version of Delta Chat desktop but that still was just about displaying the UI in the browser, you still depend on a local program and local #chatmail core in your machine

with this the whole thing is running on the client side in your browser tab! the chatmail core is compiled into #wasm

still since you can't connect to IMAP and SMTP from javascript, a proxy is needed to get this prototype working but JUST IMAGINE if chatmail relays would support/allow clients to connect via websocket or http!

#signal leaked my phone number, despite being set to hidden. this enabled cops to deanonymize and geolocate me by capturing the phone of someone who i never gave my phone number. great job for this app that is advertised to activist and journalists as "secure" and "private".

i think #deltachat has made more sensible decisions here by allowing multiple identities abs not demanding any private information, and also being decentralized instead of hosting it all on #amazon web services like #signal does.
