So far looks good! I have pretty simple use cases: just be a messenger, allow sending small files and images, support live location share. The location share glitches in #Element is what forced me to try something new.

Using my own mail server as a relay, but had to add the nine.testrun.org as a 2nd relay, because one of the family member's iphone was not getting the push notifications.

I'd like to share with you a feature I've implemented and which is currently in testing: distributing FediMeteo's forecasts using Delta Chat!

That's right: every city will have its own channel, and you'll be able to receive forecasts through Delta Chat.

For now the service is only active for Estonia, as it's a small instance with few subscribers (so I've been able to experiment without the risk of making too much noise), but it will gradually come to all the other countries too.

If you'd like to give it a try, you can subscribe to any of the Estonian cities and receive updates on the next cycle.

                        Stay tuned!

One bigest risky problem with any kind of peer-to-peer (p2p) that many users don't realize is about leaking your IP.

Yes, no central server may sound good. But direct p2p bring other problems. When using central server as a relay, only the central server knows your IP, not your p2p partner. But as we move to p2p, your partner will knows itu because communication will be direct between you and your partner.

Unfortunately, most messaging apps use p2p communication for voice/video call to optimize latency and they don't warn users about the risk of ip leaks. At least, on we can enable relaying so our IP address protected.

But there's no option about it on

Unfortunately it will be hard to implemented call relay on deltachat, because it doesn't have central server. Maybe we need to create public relay server to accomodate it.

The simplest solution is to allow user to disable call feature.

As to editing one's own messages, we didn't hear many complaints although in theory it could be problematic. @w8emv Delta Chat has channels (1-to-many like on Telegram), Signal doesn't

Signal is centralized and hence much more easy to block, while Delta Chat can even work in intra-net and mesh networks

Delta Chat can use several servers "relays" at the same time, do you remember that downtime with signal when or are down?? with Delta Chat if one of your relays go down you can keep chatting using the others (ex. people manage to use Delta Chat in Iran, Russia and China despite the strict network firewalls, if you go on vacations to China Signal will not work, Delta Chat will)

Signal doesn't support using the same account in multiple phones, and multi-device with desktop is weak and still depends on the phone, with delta chat you can have several devices at the same time and it is super easy to add a second device

each device in Delta Chat works as an incremental automatic full backup, while in signal you have to upload backups to some cloud and eventually pay for it when the backup is too big

in Delta Chat you can have several profiles, as much as you like, easily separate your work profile (with more serious avatar and name) from your family profile where you can use more informal name and avatar etc

you don't need phone numbers or any private data to use Delta Chat, onboarding is super easy, no SMS codes, no solving CAPTCHA like on Signal

No strangers can discover you and send you spam or fishing in Delta Chat same for your family members, so it is a safer space for family chat

has offline-first in-chat mini-apps like games, collaborative text pads, checklist, shopping lists and other tools (all end-to-end encrypted without any 3rd party service hosting such apps, they live in the chat and only chat members can access them)

in Delta Chat you can save messages in a "Saved Messages" chat, also has "Note to Self" but what is superior in Delta Chat is that you can also jump from the saved/bookmarked message to the original message and see it in its chat context, in Signal it just forwards a copy of the message to the "Note to Self" chat

and more, but this post is too long already

Not about , which not anymore what used to be.

Delta Chat is even better than it used to be 🙄 now it even has multi-path / multi-relay support and pain-free migration of servers/addresses without even needing to create new profiles and tell everyone you changed address/server, meaning it is more resilient and powerful than most decentralized solutions out there, including the one you mention, matrix, which heavily makes you dependent in your home-server, same and worse goes for xmpp, you are pretty bound to your chosen server and in the case of XMPP if the server where you created a group goes down, your groups is gone

this just doesn't happen in Delta Chat since groups are really decentralized and totally independent of any server, meaning they are also unblockable

but besides that, Matrix and XMPP are less user-friendly and more problematic in multi-device setup, while in Delta Chat this is pain-free

also in Delta Chat now it is impossible to end up with encryption disabled in the chat, encryption is permanent, for ALL chat content and group metadata, in matrix and XMPP this is not the case, in XMPP it is super easy to end up with encryption disabled, disabling encryption is like 3 taps away on a chat 🤦‍♂️ in matrix reactions are not encrypted etc.

I'm officially one of you. Whenever I see graphics about digital sovereignty and moving away from Big Tech, I go: "well, actually" - especially when I see Signal suggested as an alternative to WhatsApp.

My first thought: Signal is pretty centralized, #DeltaChat would be a far superior alternative 🙈🙉🙊

Disclaimer: I use both (Signal and DeltaChat) but I really wish I could move all my convos to @Delta@chaos.social. Slowly convincing one person at a time...

Impressed by how well DeltaChat works nowadays!

I could easily create an account without sharing any details. Connect with a friend's Android based phone & an iPhone. We could videocall & send small apps like a game or a shared list.

Apparently I can host my own chat relay & don't need to use someone else's infrastructure, but I haven't tested that yet.

This might be my Signal replacement. Well done @delta

A note on " is going proprietary with relays":

                                                          1) It's all based on IETF standards, with configuration and custom integration code fully FOSS and documented at: chatmail.at/doc/relay/ with hundreds of permission-free deployments.

                                                          2) We know of several alternative relay implementations and deployments

                                                          3) Own servers or big email providers can be used (YMMV)

However it's fair to criticize our relentless focus on E2EE, and our moving away from email addresses as identity.

It's hard these days to find a unifying description, or know about all the people and communities involved in developments. One shared sentiment probably is wanting to develop anti-authoritarian technologies and cultures around it, and being opposed to authoritarian tech policy moves in the West, chat control, age verification, prescribing Google/Apple control, enforcing digital app use etc

It's also a reason we are only posting on the fediverse bridged to bsky.
