#Computing by hand-manipulating terms in 𝜆-calculus is like building a model of the Brooklyn Bridge using only toothpicks and Elmer's glue: tedious, but ultimately rewarding—for a certain type of personality, that is.
@ashwin @trashheap @MsDropbear42 @lianna I agree with this, while at the same time:
I weight the #infrastructure damage from #computing #power as the higher priority to avoid which includes:
+ #datacenters
+ #people running it
+ #banks funding it (and @wars at the same time)
This is the higher #priority than most cost.
Avoiding #AI therefore saves the demand (whole #list above) because of what it uses / involves [most bad / wasteful / consumptive things and same style people behind it].
Can external metrics and data capture what's truly important?

#OTD in #ComputingHistory in 1996, AT&T and Microsoft partnered to distribute Internet Explorer. The deal expanded the browser's reach and marked a major turning point in the race to dominate the early Web.

I haven't turned on this raspberry pi 4 8gb of ram in like 3 years. I've been feeling like resurrecting it and setting it up again.
What services should I install on it?
What casing or peripherals should I use?
It was an honor to host these brilliant thinkers, pioneers, and rising stars, whose work continues to shape the digital landscape and improve lives globally.
We extend our deepest gratitude to all the laureates for their dedication, to our community for its enduring support, and to everyone who joined us to make this weekend’s celebration so memorable.

"I warned you years ago that Windows 11 was the beginning of the end. Today, the door is officially closing on general-purpose computing. In this 24-minute manifesto, I am moving past the "ripping on Rust" memes to address a documented existential threat to your hardware. Between the $12.5M Big Tech "security" grants and the US government's memory-safety mandates, we are witnessing a coordinated execution of legacy systems."#AgeVerification #Rust #BigTech #Computing
SkiftOS : https://skiftos.org/
It's not a *NIX!
"skiftOS isn’t POSIX. It’s a fresh API and userland inspired by Plan 9, Haiku, and Fuchsia. Familiar ideas, different contracts."
Problem: the GPL is poison. It has polluted Linux and the Linux userland software so that only large corporations can afford to monetize it. BSD License or MIT License would be much better allowing small players to produce unique work without then being forced to share their source code with the AI hegemony racket.
