    A quotation from Horace

    For ridicule shall frequently prevail,
And cut the knot, when graver reasons fail.

                                  [Ridiculum acri
Fortius et melius magnas plerumque secat res.]

Horace (65–8 BC) Roman poet, satirist, soldier, politician [Quintus Horatius Flaccus]
    Satires [Saturae, Sermones], Book 1, # 10 “Nempe incomposito,” l. 14ff (1.10.14-15) (35 BC) [tr. Francis (1747)]

One of my firmly held religious beliefs is that since the 20th century, Great Britain has been punching above its weight in comedy.
That's because the people's daily life is so dreadful, and their governments have done such awful things, and still, some of them can make others laugh.
By that criteria, though, the Scots clearly must be world champions.

"It was a golden age hiding in plain sight on a turntable. But the are only half the story. What matters, and what has gone missing, is the room.

A was not designed to be listened to alone. It was designed to be dropped onto a spindle in a living room full of people who had just finished a bowl of onion-soup-mix dip or the last of the wine. Someone would say, “Wait, wait, you have to hear this one.” The needle would come down. And for the length of a 20-minute-or-so side, the room would become a single organism, breathing in on the setup and out on the .

This was a ritual with rules, even if no one wrote them down. You did not talk over the bit. You did not explain the to the person who didn’t get it; you’d let them get it on the second listen, or the third, because everyone knew these were going to be played again."

I have a theory that the reason TV comedies without a laughter track tend to be less funny is the decision to omit the laughter track.

There tends to be a different reveal moment in more modern style comedies. There tends to be a more subtle reveal, and dialogue less snappy. Jokes are sluggish and they creep up on the viewer, giving at best an "Aheh" moment.

Comedies with the laughter track tend to have more of a 'punchline' feel about them, where reveal cuts and delivery are faster.

It's that kind of quick-quip, punchline-and-laugh nature of the laughter-track comedy that *can* make them funnier and more enjoyable.

            It's just a theory I have.
