It's hitting me how the slow arc of justice my elders fought and died to set in motion has been halted by the Calais decision.

This morning, I was on a call with another (highly accomplished) middle-aged Black women and this is how we processed it together:

We are realizing that we (including our younger elder millennial sisters) are likely to be the LAST generation of Black women who will achieve so much.

This decision is not just a gutting of the VRA but the highest court's massive rejection of the idea that this country is, indeed, a land of opportunity for everyone.

The court is now an overt and explicitly complicit engine of white nationalism.

THAT is how much anti-Blackness has been simmering underneath this facade of 'American democracy.'

So now, Black folks, we need to decide. Retreat, close ranks to protect our own, and/or fight for a renewed Reconstruction on top of the smoldering ruins of this gotdamn system?

And just as Trump’s Justice Department is indicting his political enemies on legally specious mortgage fraud charges, state officials in #Alabama unsuccessfully indicted King on #felony criminal charges for income tax perjury in 1960.

"But the NYPD — nor any other local police department — did not need to wait for encouragement from the feds to spy on King and his allies. A common misperception is that local police were content with physically assaulting protesters while leaving the sophisticated work of surveillance and slander to Hoover’s FBI. But police were far more experienced in spying on and sabotaging activists than we have acknowledged — so much so that the FBI’s notorious #COINTELPRO program against '#BlackExtremists,' launched in August 1967, should be recognized for federalizing efforts that local police departments had already undertaken to disrupt the #CivilRightsMovement."

The caption is very cryptic, but from the picture I infer his camera survived & he was in fact arrested. No word on whether he had any injuries, though at a minimum I’d expect bruises. The Civil Rights Division, who has holistically had the job of investigating dirty cops after they murder someone, refused to take the case.

When long time prosecutors offered to fly out to investigate the crime scene they were TURNED AWAY.
