My 10 yo has been asking for me to teach her so we gave it a go today. She did really well for all that was going, especially since I threw in the two expansions (Abundance and Animal Kingdom) which I had only tried once.

The animals are interesting. We both used two that were each rated "easy." My Red Panda didn't do a ton but it did help me get more cards in the early game.

Her quokka was a little more interactive, having to move around her tableau, generating sprouts.

I am still not fully sold on the Seeds from Abundance. Granted, she did get to use one to germinate (digging for a card with a specific trait) that greatly helped her meet a Fauna goal.

Thoughts on either expansion?

Taught my 10 yo . It might have been a little tough for her as I had to help her a lot with the decisions when it came to playing cards or putting on shows. She just really only wanted to out shows on. Oh yeah I forgot, she won by 8 :/

Was going to work on next review and video set this week and was planning on doing Imperium Classics but might go for this first. Thought?

I did laser print a full set of 25 tiles for my 10 Print game. Next step is to lay a piece of Baltic Birch plywood into the laser printer and have it cut and decorate all the tiles and the surrounding border with one push of the button. Glue on the back and add the dice an pieces (meeples) and it's ready to play.

My son, Kier, aka @dadget , is going to help me with the SVG file to feed the laser printer.

So, that's my game news for this week.

@CurtAdams It turns out one of our friends got a special card, misunderstood how it scored, and spent an hour doing a stupid strategy. All it did was interfere with the rest of us without getting him meaningful points (he was last out of 5). As soon as we explained how he wasn’t earning any points doing this, he stopped. The game ended like 15 minutes later.

It’s not really obvious what a winning strategy is when you’re a noob. They say supposedly a 90 minute game. We are on minute 150 and we are about 2/3 to the end.

Outside the boundaries of the circles are things meant to represent types of things: ambulance, rocket, pretzel, yoyo, crab, all sorts of things.

The games are all competitive types, but I'd say the majority of play in descending order is Ticket To Ride, Splendor, Azul, Mille Bourne, and Codenames.

                                                Roborally

I love Roborally. My oldest son does too. We've got a first edition (with the metal robots) with a bunch of expansions (got it all second hand ages ago), and we've been playing it a lot lately. To my son's great frustration, I always win. I think we've played at least 8 games these past few weeks, and I've won all of them, but he's determined to beat me. He wants to play me at every possible opportunity until he finally beats me, and I love that tenacity. But so far, no luck. He claims I'm lucky, and I keep saying that a streak like that can't possibly be just luck. I also have my crappy hands, but somehow I manage to pick just slightly better routes, I guess. I manage the severe twists and turns of the more complex boards just slightly better than he does, I think.

And we play this game on hard mode: one complex board (Cannery Row is my favourite), 6 flags criss cross across the board so you meet each other a lot and have to navigate nearly impossible passages. And every death after the first, you lose the last flag you won.

Anyway, today he was having a great day: an important math test for his finals that he was dreading had gone surprisingly well. Lots of things went his way today. He cooked, and to everybody's surprise, even my very picky youngest son loved it. I was having a terrible day; didn't feel well, tired, work didn't go well. So he figured, if he was ever going to win, it was today. His lucky day, my off day.

And he did very well. Laser Maze was our board, his favourite. He took the lead, I died somewhere, I had one bad hand after another, I even made a bad mistake somewhere. Not only that, my wife threw him a popsicle for desert, and hit me in the head instead.

Eventually, he had flag 4 and was on his way to 5. I had flag 3, and realised I needed to take some chances if I still wanted to win, so I confronted him at the edge of the board, near several conveyors that would gladly throw one of us off the board. I gambled wrong and died again, and he was now certain of his victory. Fortunately, because my losing flag 3, I respawned at flag 2, which was close to flag 5, so I could interfere with him, try to push him off course. It didn't work, and he escaped. So I picked up flag 3 and a special (the tractor beam, deadly in some very specific circumstances), ignored the flags and just went hunting.

I caught him when he was a turn away from victory. Pulled him away with the tractor beam, but to a safe spot. He would have jumped off the board if I'd pulled him only once, but I pulled twice, and he was saved by a wall. He went power down (to repair). I drew a great hand, and pulled him onto a conveyor that dropped him in a pit. He lost flag 5 and had to start at flag 4 again. I was headed to flag 4. He got stuck in front of flag 5, and I got there a turn after him. Suddenly it was a race again. I thought I got a bad hand with no good turns and couldn't follow him, until I realized I could take a completely different route to another corner. It was trickier to get to flag 6 from there, but not impossible.

Then disaster struck. He'd accummulated too much damage, and was forced to power down in a laser, so he woke up with 5 damage. His 4 cards could only get him in the wrong direction into another laser, and while he went the wrong way, I passed him on the way to flag 6. By the time he had finally powered down in a safe place, I reached flag 6.

Still undefeated. My son massively frustrated because his certain victory was stolen from him by such a ridiculous twist.

He will beat me some day, but today was not that day.

I have this constant game-theory problem that some people might find interesting. I'm not strong enough to play to win. I almost always play to be NOT-LAST.

This means that to me it's useless to squander my resources on attacking the leading player. It would just mean that B wins instead of A, and I'm still last. I need to attack my *weakest* opponent.

Yeah, auctions and bidding are fun. I'll happily play anything where we're competing for something on a shared board. Here are some recent favourites of mine.

I do not, no. Wingspan is a huge international hit. I absolutely detest Wingspan.

No, I'm saying that a lot of games with personal boards or tableaux have low interaction.

There are certainly some games with personal little player boards that have high interaction, such as Hansa Teutonica.
