Some readers insist my use of NotebookLM to turn essays into AI-hosted podcasts 'dilutes authenticity'. I call it diversification.

People consume ideas in different ways: some read, some listen. The AI hosts don’t just parrot—they interpret, misread, and occasionally out-think me.

U.S. immigration authorities are using smartphone facial recognition technology in the field to determine whether people are citizens, @404mediaco reports. Officers use an app called Mobile Fortify, which has a bank of 200M images and data from the State Department, CBP, FBI, and states as well as datasets relating to “individuals, vehicles, airplanes, vessels, addresses, phone numbers and firearms,” according to a memo viewed by 404's @josephcox. Ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee Bennie G. Thompson said in a statement: “ICE officials have told us that an apparent biometric match by Mobile Fortify is a ‘definitive’ determination of a person’s status and that an ICE officer may ignore evidence of American citizenship — including a birth certificate — if the app says the person is an alien.

In a July post on X, Maguire called New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani an "Islamist" who "comes from a culture that lies about everything." There was a sizeable online backlash, culminating in Sequoia's chief operating officer Sumaiya Balbale, who is Muslim, quitting over the firm's decision not to discipline Maguire. I often cite Ray Bradbury's brilliantly poignant short story "The Flying Machine" when talking about this ill-considered headlong rush for an "AI"-mediated society that is being thrust upon us.

Hexlish is a legible, sixteen-letter alphabet for writing the English language and for encoding text as legible base 16 or compressed binary. Texts composed using the alphabet are automatically compressed by exactly fifty percent when converted from Hexlish characters into binary characters. Although technically lossy, this syntactic compression enables recovery of the correct English letters via syntactic reconstruction. The implementer can predict the size of the compressed binary file and the size of the text that will result from decompression. Generally it is intuitive to recognize English alphabet analogues to Hexlish words. This makes Hexlish a legible alternative to the standard hexadecimal alphabet.
