#ProtonMail Helped #FBI Unmask Anonymous ‘#StopCopCity’ #Protester
A court record shows privacy-focused #email provider Proton Mail handed over payment data related to a Stop Cop City email account to Swiss gov, which handed it to the FBI.
The records provide insight into the sort of data that Proton Mail, which prides itself both on its end-to-end encryption and that it is only governed by Swiss #privacy law, can and does provide to third parties.

Al Gore Invented the Internet.
Joe Biden invented PGP encryption.
Cypherpunks write code.
Joe Biden gifted humanity with PGP encryption (in a roundabout way). Phil Zimmermann created PGP in response to a anti-privacy bill clause proposed by Senator Joe Biden.
https://www.americanscientist.org/article/cypherpunks-write-code
"In 1990, the FBI launched an over-the-top crackdown on computer hackers, known as Operation Sundevil. This was swiftly followed, in early 1991, by a proposed piece of U.S. Senate legislation that would force electronic communications service providers to hand over people’s personal data. (The key clause, S.266, was pushed by the then chairman of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Joe Biden.)"
"On learning of Biden’s S.266 clause, Zimmermann feverishly set out to complete the project, almost losing his house in the process. When he finished his software in 1991, he published it all online, free for anyone who wanted to use it. He called it “Pretty Good Privacy,” or PGP for short, and within weeks it had been downloaded and shared by thousands of people around the world. “Before PGP, there was no way for two ordinary people to communicate over long distances without the risk of interception,” said Zimmermann in a later interview. “Not by phone, not by FedEx, not by fax.” It remains the most widely used form of email encryption to this day."Joe Biden's first panopticon bill:
https://www.congress.gov/bill/102nd-congress/senate-bill/266
"SEC. 2201. COOPERATION OF TELECOMMUNICATIONS PROVIDERS WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT. It is the sense of Congress that providers of electronic communications services and manufacturers of electronic communications service equipment shall ensure that communications systems permit the government to obtain the plain text contents of voice, data, and other communications when appropriately authorized by law."As they say in Texas: That dinosaur don't hunt.

Which email service (not self hosted for 2 reasons, effort, and deny-listing) do you recommend for own domain addresses, that has IMAP access and is not US nor EU/UK (not crazy about Russia either, but perhaps distributing my data over different dictatorships is not the worst idea, they will never work together to get the full picture)?
I currently use Zoho, the free one, no IMAP, just web mail, no PGP, so I encrypt a text file with what I would normally write in the email body and attach, but that makes communication with non-IT people difficult. Now I want something I can simply use in Thunderbird and I am willing to pay.
Fastmail?
ETA: Damn https://www.fastmail.com/blog/fastmails-servers-are-in-the-us-what-this-means-for-you/
GMX has been around for many years.
I've had the same free email for exactly 20-years, but over the last year it's become manipulative and intrusive while increasingly failing to filter spam.
My entire online life is linked to this email, now it might go sideways.
Are there proven, dependable, and hopefully free, services that do better, or is this a universal problem?
I don't want to bounce from one to another, constantly having to update sites. I'm also desperate to keep expenses down.
I'm willing to drop my GMail account.
What I need is an imap access, no app lock-in, and a good privacy policy, preferably with server located in the EU.
I am evaluating @soverin and @eclipso so far, with the latter lokking a bit more feature full but suspiciously less pricy.
Do you have any experience with any of those services? Have you any suggestion about them or other services I may look into?
Thanks in advance!

Anyone have any experience with @Tutanota?
I created an account while on VPN and was told they needed to manually approve my account because people try to abuse their system using VPN.
Totally understand that. I was patient. Days later they denied me. Not with a notification, but by simply closing the account. Never even got to use it.

So, right now I'm testing my emailchat program. It's best to test with real conversations so that's where the game ideas come in.
I will, occasionally, start a thread with a game idea or prompt for discussion. To participate in the discussion all you have to do is hit reply and type something.
Right now Kier, Carl and I are in the chat. That's fine. If you know someone else with game ideas who would like to help me test the program I can add them. (Brandon?)

What do Fedi people think about #Posteo email service? I'm pondering my choices in case of degoogling and finding a good email provider isn't easy.
Here's my criteria:
1) It's an email provider. Not everything-you-never-needed in one ugly unwieldy box and a stupid AI on the side.
2) I don't care about so called privacy and encryption, it's a marketing fad. These services are just huge targets for governmental blocking. So wherever you cool hackers are, I'm staying away. I want to be with common people. I don't want to be a collateral damage.
3) I don't care about Five Eyes, Nine Eyes, etc. Whatever I write on the Internet could be written on the wall, for everything else there is PGP.
4) I care about respectability and stability. So this service has to be in business for at least 10 years and not run by a group of enthusiasts.
5) POP3/IMAP support without restrictions.
So this leaves me with two options: #Fastmail and #Posteo
Fastmail is great, I used it in the past when it was twenty something dollars a year, but now it's too expensive. $5 a month and most features are overkill. 60Gb of space is ten times more than all my working documents combined.
Posteo is cheap and affordable, 2Gb is more than enough. But I don't really know if it's good and reliable.
Other sane alternatives are welcome, of course.

Can anyone recommend a good email app for Android?
I'm currently using Edison Mail, which works very well as long as I'm connected to wifi, but won't work at all over a 4G phone signal.
Would quite like to have an app that works over a phone signal as well.
Yesterday I finished the proof of concept for my email chat program. That is, it's working but it still needs cleaned up, worked on, tested, and debugged.
I'm thinking of testing it with a game ideas chat. If you want in on this let me know.
Using email only I set up a chat where all replies go to everyone.
All the chatters have to do is hit reply, type, and send. Then everyone gets their reply.
Or they can start a thread by emailing to the chat's email address.

Perhaps I am being a judgemental asshole -- hey, it does happen; I am not always Mr supportive, full of sugar and cheer!
I have a problem with businesses using free email addresses.
So you want me to pay your hourly rate to fix my plumbing; order hand-made cakes; buy hand-crafted greetings cards; reserve my meat from the local butcher..... but you want me to contact you on a hotmail, gmail, or outlook email?
Come on guys, I love supporting small, independent businesses. And I will do it as much as I can. However, equally you need to support small independent tech companies. They can quickly, and cost effectively, set you up with an email address on your own domain name.
It looks far more professional. AND you support another small business, much like you want me to do.
Yesterday I saw a plumber's van. It proudly boasted a web site, a mobile number, and a gmail.com! I just rolled my eyes and thought to myself -- he's already paid for a domain name for his website, so why not have the email there too.
Facebook is NOT your website. You should have a website of your own, even a simple one. Running your entire business via FB leaves you at the mercy of a billionaire who can change the rules at any time.
Imagine if the setup changed on how your posts were shown via the sausage machine -- perhaps they banned your account, or wanted to start charging for commercial posts. Your business, which you have worked so hard at, is doomed; instantly.
Don't have all your eggs in one basket.

I dumped Google for my email & calendar a few months ago, but forgot to write a post about it!
If you are still using Google, consider leaving them. If Fastmail doesn't work for you there are other good alternatives.

I'm looking for a new mail provider because my small Swiss provider doesn't support #ipv6 and my home network has now been IPv6-only for a year. My requirements
- full IPv6 support for web and mail (which rules out maibox.org which still only uses IPv4 for certain parts of their web sites and runbox which is IPv4 only)
- Switzerland or Europe based
- IMAP and SMTP support (which rules out Proton)
- Support for + sub-addresses (which rules out Hostpint in Switzerland)
- Privacy friendly, no AI training in my mails, no ads. Preferably no AI features at all (not sure whether this rules out Infomaniak who advertise some AI on the website)
- Preferably has a mail only offer for multiple users without any cloud office features
- Support for hosting my own mail domains (i.e. not Posteo)
And I don't plan to self-host because I don't have the time, even though @Michael W Lucas :flan_on_fire:'s #RYOMS is still on my stack of yet to be read books.
Any ideas?

I'm strongly leaning towards giving up hosting my own email. I've been doing it for 25 years this November, and I'm about done with jumping though all the hoops needed to get mail delivered.
Is there a company you can recommend that will take over all the work and give me an imap account?
I don't mind paying a reasonable sum per year, but I'd really like my email to work again consistently so I can move away from google. #email #selfhosting #SellMeSomethingIWant
Anyone who expects me to install yet another app for their garbage can kindly fuck off!
I won't but seeing folks who actually take privacy serious and thus have their #cameras removed from their #Android device struggle makes me fucking angry.
Personally, I wished @delta / #deltaChat had a plugin for like @thunderbird / #Thunderbird so that it can be used as #Chat in it and sort the inbox. Would make it the superior solution for #corporations that already have #eMail #Archival setup for legal compliance…
@koteisaev @craignewmark not necessesarily.
The problems re: @delta / #dletaChat and/or @thunderbird may be caused by #eMail providers either actively blocking #PGP/MIME and/or inline-#PGP, having extremely tight quotas and/or filtering #UserAgents / #Clients.
