California Just Killed Open Source
[3D Printer Laws aren't about guns]

https://youtu.be/Nhz6vao13bs

[copypasta]

California AB 2047: The End of Open Source 3D Printing

California just introduced a bill that doesn't just regulate "ghost guns", it mandates a digital kill switch for every 3D printer sold. California AB 2047 requires "blocking technology" that connects your printer to a government-approved database before every single print. If the system goes down, or your file is flagged, your hardware becomes a paperweight.

This isn't just about firearms. This is the death of Open Source. If this bill passes, it effectively bans Marlin, Klipper, and Orca Slicer, forcing every manufacturer to lock down their firmware. It turns general-purpose computing into a walled garden where you only rent permission to use the hardware you own.

[/copypasta]

All the donor-funded foundations ought to be fighting against and speaking out against this Orwellian garbage.

To everyone saying userdb adding a birth date field is a slippery slope towards escalating age verification, please consider that user fields storing real name, work room number, and telephone numbers have been a thing as far back as pre-Linux UNIX. Further, systemd userdb can store user avatars. Is this also a slippery slope towards face recognition and government control?
Although the change is surely motivated by recent laws, it really isn’t that weird on its own, and certainly isn’t where we should be focusing our attention.

Been seeing a lot of misleading claims from ID and age verification vendors lately. Let's be clear.

                                                  - Client-side only face scan
                                                  - Client-side only ID info extraction
                                                  - Client-side only image to info comparison
                                                  - Client-side only integrity witness
                                                  - Server-side only gets 18+ or no (no other data, hash, or telemetry)

If the implementation deviates from that at any step, the privacy claim is marketing, not architecture.

The technical bar exists. It can be met and would satisfy all; UK, American, and Australian laws even on browsers. it's just inconvenient to meet it.

About the Age Verification bills in California and Colorado:

It seems few people are actually bothering to read the bills and instead just want to scream while running around in circles. Neither of the bills are mandating you give your ID/Face-Scan/Transactional Documents/etc. to be able to setup your computer.

The only thing you give is your birth-date/age, you are assigned an age-category, and apps and websites respond accordingly.

Don't get me wrong, there are still valid concerns about these bills, but few are actually discussing those concerns. Most are just assuming the worst and panicking.

Also, I don't know how these bills would be enforceable on Linux (or any decentralized, FOSS ecosystem).
