soc.octade.net is a Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, users at this host can communicate with people that use software like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, etc. all around the world.
This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.
I've just read about #Nolto. Do you use it? What are your experiences? Have you found articles about it?
I wanted to try it out instantly, but as I opened the page, something felt odd. The mastodon in a suit is convenient mascot, but can you just reuse or build on an existing mascot to get yours? How does it work legally? It was kind of a warning sign for me.
And my next thought was: If the mascot might be in a legal gray zone, are other areas okay legally? Who will own, use and handle my data if I register on someone's instance? Will it be safe? And I've looked for articles to read about Nolto and found nothing relevant besides a toot stream that its codebase looks a bit odd. That's two more warning signs.
I won't register yet but follow the app closely before giving it trust. The web app couldn't even show me content from the inatance. #mastodon instances do it. I would like to replace #LinkedIn, but only with a more reliable alternative.
If you are the sort of person who usually talks nonsense on #Mastodon but sometimes wants to write something more #blog post like, what do you do?
Is there a #Fedi platform targeting that (longer, more detailed) use case?
I have a blog but I haven't turned on the computer I use for it so haven't done anything with it for a year or more...

Yeah I agree and my approach with most people is to "filter out" the good people / keep the matching people more often (even though I think all can play a part) so even though talking is nearly non-existent, people can move on and simply try another person if they know they can... which means even with "1 in million chance" or "10 in a billion" we still might be able to get 10 and 1 or 2 trickling through constantly... but the way to filter in I think is the problem always (word of mouth / friends and family talking might be more real for people).
Not a perfect way or covering everyone but accepting enough to do with a few people and see if they are similar / matching / accepting in many ways. Else just say "thanks for the chat" and that's it.
I think a good enough system would help the human side as a way or web interface for #Jitsi to say "this is an open chat 25hours a day" to make it easier for people to talk and say "next!" / make other chat rooms from that...
I agree it's not just algorithms to blame and not easy - I think it's quite the same here on Mastodon too with even the best people chasing the tails of #privacy #tech etc - because as worthy as it is it's STILL not a lot of building of community and NOT PERSONAL -
e.g. #Mastodon could actively organise chats in Jitsi but doesn't and leaves people to their untrained state of theirself or think socialising is sending cat pictures on #Caturday... so it's a nice engine but not improving people by much when it could daily / month / yearly (at least!)
Wasted talents we are and not even working together as much!
Dveloping tech is different to Developing people and their character in communication - 2 different developments need to happen!)
We have too many lop-sided tech pro's that can do human stuff.
If developing human communication is not for tech people then that's what we have! (I think today that's true, great tech, #undeveloped / #under-developed people).
Hope I didn't skip any of your thoughts or points or sound like "this is the answer for everyone"...
But I am thinking...
❓ How to make #communication more fun? ❓
🧩 I think this is a puzzle (even if mostly for those that love talking already).
Any ideas how to make it more fun ? Perhaps paying people! :]
( Wait........ Maybe! )
@Equuis90 Hi. Welcome to Mastodon!
Because there's no algorithm to push content to people, using hashtags is important. To ask questions about Mastodon, use the #Mastodon hashtag.
In your #introduction post, because you're interested in #horses, use hashtags like horses and #HorsesOfFedi. And hashtags for any other interest.
You can search for hashtags and even follow them so when anyone posts something of interest to you, you'll see it in your timeline.
Many, including myself, are willing to help you learn how to get the most from Mastodon. Just ask.
It's nice having you here.
Does anyone else have pointers?
We are excited to share that we are beginning work on a new onboarding experiment for #Mastodon: Default Server Recommendations.
Our intent for this experiment is to recommend the closest server geographically that is in the correct language during the sign-up flow. We will be running this experiment on our iOS and Android apps only to start.

Heads-up: Please be careful with this setting, as it could impact the user experience on the BSD Cafe Mastodon instance. Huge thanks to @justine and @grahamperrin for helping debug this!

yup
we are on #mastodon/ #fediverse because the profit motive in corporate #socialMedia means privacy defilement, free reign for bigotry/ ignorance, and #algorithm manipulation by #plutocracy agendas
the same applies to the #news #media:
#ventureCapital takes over dying traditional media outlets and puts right wing goons in the managing editor positions
we have nonprofit news (#NPR, #ProPublica, #TheGuardian, etc)
trust them
all else: beware
I did not know that. So they borked a good feature to generate a self-censorship-oriented culture.
Thanks, #Mastodon!
If I press: "open in Webbrowser" to see the conversation and not only the post, then it will go to some /ap/ endpoint that is 404.
I think that was not always the case, but maybe I misremember it.
@grunfink@comam.es
I notice that the /people/ section of snac gives broken links to follower and followee profiles.
For instance entries for mastodon users are like this:
https://mastodon.social/ap/users/253190229248136435
Which appears to be an API endpoint rather than a web link. Links like this lead to a not found page.
Two features I wish #Mastodon would improve are Lists and Private mentions.
Lists is a confusing feature with no explanation or onboarding.
Meanwhile, private mentions don't align with people's mental model of how sending DMs works.
Spent the last week diving deep into E2EE and encryption. Decided to do it right: generated a fresh GPG key on my own hardware using Vanity GPG.
Managed to "mine" 10 trailing zeros for the fingerprint in just 5 minutes on the M4 Max—the performance is wild.
Chose ECC (Curve25519/Ed25519) for that perfect balance of speed and high security. Moved the private key to my YubiKey, and now signing GitHub/GitLab commits is just a single tap away.
My brain loves manual protocols, and there’s something deeply satisfying about hardware-backed trust. I know, I'm late to the party, but it feels good to finally have that "Verified" badge.

Okay, this is weird. I enabled streaming for home and notifications in #FastSM, restarted the app, and now my home timeline is just...gone. I know I didn't hide it or anything. Has anyone else seen this? I even tried restarting the app a second time. It's still gone.#accessibility #ScreenReader #Mastodon @main @mastoblind @FastSM
How is everyone doing this evening? I'm sitting in bed drinking my medical food shake, listening to music, with a few #IncrementalGames idling, and maybe doing a bit of #Python practice on #Codecademy.
I'm not 100% yet, but I feel stronger than I've felt in a while. I don't particularly care for the taste of these shakes, but my mom and I are working on ways to improve them. It's also a relief not having to worry about whether food will stay down or whether I'm getting the nutrients I need.
I'm also still using and enjoying #FastSM for #Mastodon on #Windows. It's been working well for me so far.
Accessibility / tech note for fellow screen reader users:
If you use #NVDA with #MicrosoftEdge (and possibly #GoogleChrome) and have been dealing with freezes or heavy lag, especially when you have multiple tabs or web apps open, check whether you have the BrowserNav add-on installed. I was experiencing some pretty severe freezes, sometimes to the point where NVDA would become unresponsive for minutes. Disabling BrowserNav made a noticeable difference for me right away, including being able to keep more tabs open without issues.

Open request to the users of Mastodon: if you use an acronym, please spell it out the first time you use it in each post. You know what the acronym means, but Mastodon is huge and there are people all over the world who may be reading your post. Telling us that some alphabet soup did something means nothing if it just comes out as alphabet soup!
It's standard practice in journalism and writing to fully write out the words of an acronym the first time it's used. Please think of your readers.
Thanks!

Wow, I've only been using #FastSM for a bit over an hour, and I'm more and more impressed! It has just about all features I could want out of a #Mastodon client except for hashtag autocomplete, which I've suggested, and the dev is so responsive! @FastSM great job on this app! I was excited to see the ability to edit server filters right in the app, something I hadn't seen any app before offer.
Accessibility-focused Mastodon question.
I’m currently using the Enafore web client and generally like it. I’ve been seeing some chatter about FastSM, and I’m curious how it compares in real use.
Has anyone here used Enafore and then switched to FastSM? If so, how is it with a screen reader, and what feels different or better (or worse)?
I don’t have much energy for trial-and-error right now, so firsthand experiences would be especially helpful.

@rufustheduck If there's a better description of Mastodon than "You're a real likeable bunch of weirdos" then I'm yet to hear it 😄
