I put up a new blog essay, The Tedious Pained, a defense of the legitimacy of technical & social critiques of "AI" tech, even as positives are claimed. Positives don't cancel negatives, in other words.
Well, it's only new if you didn't see it as a comment on someone else's post a bit ago at LinkedIn. This is me just giving it a better placement and a name for later reference. And perhaps a wider audience.

Does anyone know why this was excluded from the Wayback Machine? Go try to add it and see.
I'm going to save a copy locally because this is really scary stuff.
I already avoid the subscription/streaming economy as much as I can. I strive for digital autonomy. I #selfhost everything I can. I avoid LLMs like the plague. I avoid plastic like the plague. (Yes, I avoid the plague like the plague too. #maskup )
I try not to participate in the surveillance economy. All my appliances are smart enough to mind their own business. We've been railroaded into smartphones like everyone else, but we run a privacy-centric OS on older phones. We avoid processed foods. We burn clean energy, even if we can't afford solar yet - our town makes carbon-free electricity available at a fairly steep cost.
And yet, none of this matters if we don't all move together on it.
This feels incredibly important for people to read and understand.
“Nothing to hide” is a dangerous myth: it turns a fundamental right into a moral test and ignores how data is stored, combined, and used to judge or manipulate us over time 🔍
Privacy isn’t about hiding crimes, it’s about keeping control of our lives in a world of profiling, data brokers, shifting laws, and client‑side scanning 🔒

There’s something to be said about how neoliberalism, in pursuit of transforming public services to private, has obscured what democracy dictates public.
In policing, we have privatized surveillance such that companies control what data even police have access to, let alone defendants. Where processes and their resultant data used to be subpoenable, now we have strict NDAs and proprietary claims.
This is a major impediment to justice, accountability, equality. #police #surveillance #AI
"Amodei is highly perturbed by the possibility of the Chinese Communist Party developing more advanced AI than the U.S., because China is “currently autocratic and operates a high-tech surveillance state.” This is part of why his company must help the U.S. government develop new weapons technology. But the argument is strange. Amodei concedes that “the Chinese people themselves” are the ones “most likely to suffer from the CCP’s AI-enabled repression.” That’s because being “authoritarian” is an internal characteristic of countries. It does not mean the country poses a threat to others.
If we were serious about assessing the threat posed by certain countries being the first to develop powerful new AI-enabled weaponry, the question we would ask is not whether the country is “autocratic,” but whether it is “aggressive,” meaning that it poses threats beyond its own borders. Yes, it will be disturbing if the Chinese government is able to use AI to further entrench its power over the population, but it’s not clear why the U.S. would fear this possibility, unless China was an aggressive country that posed a threat to us.
I think one reason Amodei discusses the world in terms of “authoritarian” versus “democratic” countries is that if he instead discussed aggressive countries versus defensive countries, he’d have to acknowledge that the U.S. poses far more of a threat to other countries in the world than China does."

for those who are in my discord server and want a feature added, there is now a showcase channel. it is located here or if you're an old geezer with an old geezer mastodon client, https://discord.com/channels/1373065266228891760/1474793878044282984 .
note: there is 1 very specific rule that needs following.
don't give me suggestions, give me code. I don't want to hear about your great ideas unless you can code them first.
not for any of my projects, at least. that's the cost of me making it open source, if you want a feature and you can't code it, then i'll delete your thread right away.
your dream doesn't matter unless you can make it concrete. and yes, there are guidelines.
first off, you need your GitHub username. second, you need the name and, if applicable, ID of your pull request. then, you need the exact link of your pull request. then, you need a reason of why this feature makes sense for either the blind community or the bot in general.
once you have that, I will get back to you, or someone else who works on the bot will, and i'm sure there's some public comments too. the only condition is that you not give me some proprietary stuff. the feature must be available to access by everyone. If it isn't, I'm immediately rejecting because the bot is a #GPLV3 bot. the license on the GitHub is a gnu public license. if it meets these guidelines, then it's possible it'll go into the main bot. also, if you're wondering why this is, it's because i'm not a company. I'm not Google, i'm not Microsoft. I don't take your feedback and go "thank you, we'll take care of it" and leave it empty. and I don't want your feedback unless you can solve the problem first.
in litary terms, I don't want it abstract, I want it concrete.
if you're not good at coding, then learn if you want a feature or use an #ai ide , yes, i'll except vybecode. as said earlier, I'm not a corporation, i'm a developer who wants people to develop. even if you're #blind like me, yes, you're not exception. you must code it and then showcase it. note if you do not want the initial release to be on discord, or you don't want to use discord, you can contact me directly on averlicetech@proton.me and I will check it out.

AI sovereignty has been a hot topic at India's AI Impact Summit. Eileen Donahoe and Konstantinos Komaitis write for Tech Policy about what governments need to do to make that a reality, without their countries becoming isolated — it's all about interoperability. "In an interoperable world, standards are power—and governments that ignore them will find sovereignty decided elsewhere," they conclude.

attention to all #blind people using bsid-js. the overhaul from #gemini to #cloudflare #workers #ai is complete. the model we are using is@cf/meta/llama-3.2-11b-vision-instruct . this is more of an emergency overhaul because Gemini was not only taking too slow, but was pushing the limit of cloud flare workers, as cloud flare workers have time limits that must be met. also, if you see a command called /agree, don't worry about it. that was a one-time command I had to run to get it to agree to the meta licensing agreement. this is more of a beta. please test it, and make new commits if you find any problems. I'll be a bit active on this one. because, as promised, I have overhauled over to CF workers AI, and I will work on emergency patches. but overall, I want you (the devs) to be able to fix things yourself or add whatever features you are thinking of. like I said in a previous post, I will not be katering to your suggestions unless you add them yourself and then contact me to get your feature tested. but, as said earlier, I will fix things that keep the bot from running, and Gemini just so happened to be one of them fter a while. also, I'm keeping the /agree command just for people who want to run the bot with the same model. because you are required to agree to the licensing agreement meta has, and /agree is the only way to do so. so there ya go. overhaul complete. #cloudflare #cloudflareworkers #developers #ai public bot : https://discord.com/oauth2/authorize?client_id=1459622381961220110&permissions=1126176932350976&integration_type=0&scope=bot+applications.commands or https://blindsoft.net/apps.html

"AI start-up Perplexity has abandoned advertising over fears that it will erode user trust, despite rivals pushing ahead with introducing ads as they seek strategies to make money from the technology.
San Francisco-based Perplexity was one of the first generative AI companies to introduce ads in 2024, running tests in which sponsored answers were displayed under the chatbot’s answers.
However, the company — which also offers paid subscriptions — began phasing out the ads late last year. On Tuesday, executives at the company said it had no plans to pursue advertising further.
“A user needs to believe this is the best possible answer, to keep using the product and be willing to pay for it,” a Perplexity executive said.
Perplexity’s ads were labelled and the company said they had no bearing on the chatbot’s responses.
But the executive said in general “the challenge with ads is that a user would just start doubting everything . . . which is why we don’t see it as a fruitful thing to focus on right now”."

"U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has relied extensively on Microsoft’s cloud storage and artificial intelligence products while escalating its campaign of mass arrests and deportations in recent months, files obtained by +972 Magazine, Local Call, and The Guardian reveal.
ICE more than tripled the amount of data it holds on Microsoft servers between July 2025 and January 2026, at the same time as the agency’s crackdown on migrants broke new records and sparked mass protests across the United States. Whereas last July the agency was storing around 400 terabytes of data in Microsoft’s cloud platform, Azure, by the end of January that had risen to almost 1,400 terabytes — equivalent to approximately 490 million images.
The leaked documents do not specify the kinds of information stored by ICE on Microsoft servers, but they do indicate that the agency has used Azure to house large amounts of data, in addition to making use of AI tools that search and analyze images and videos.
ICE employs a powerful arsenal of surveillance technology, reportedly using facial recognition software, drones, phone location tracking, mobile spyware, and even tapping school cameras. The leaked documents show ICE is using Microsoft’s AI video analysis tools including Azure AI Video Indexer and Azure Vision, which enable customers to analyze images, read text, and detect certain words, faces, emotions, and objects in audio and video files."

"When it comes to generated or artistic content, the decisive question is simple: does it exploit and harm a real, non-consenting person? If it does — as in the case of deepfakes of real children — it is a form of abuse and demands a firm, targeted response. If it does not, then however offensive it may be, it does not belong in the same criminal category.
Edge cases like AI-generated deepfakes have led some to argue for collapsing all depictions of minors, real or imagined, into the definition of CSAM. But conflating fiction with victimization weakens both enforcement and principle. Criminal law loses clarity. Resources are misdirected. And the moral gravity of the term “child sexual abuse material” is diluted.
The case of Lauren Matrosa illustrates where this path leads: criminal liability imposed not for harm, but for offense. A free society does not protect only inoffensive art. It protects art and literature precisely because criminal penalties must be necessary and proportionate, imposed only to prevent or punish conduct that causes real and identifiable harm. This is not a radical proposition; it is a cornerstone of international human rights law. Offensive art shouldn’t be distributed without safeguards, but it should be allowed to exist.
Real CSAM on the other hand — including deepfakes of real children — is not merely offensive. It is abusive. Our response to it demands precision, enforcement, and support for victims. Therefore the solution is to target the harm directly, through measures such as preventative education, data privacy frameworks, and targeted image abuse laws – not to expand the existing criminal category of CSAM until it loses its meaning."
