New blog post!

My very own instance in the Fediverse, powered by @gotosocial is now one year old! 🥳

On that occasion, I wrote a short retrospective blog post talking about how I started my server and how it evolved over that time.

You can now have Fediverse compatiblity on self-hosted Ghost-powered blogs. There are two different ways of doing this:

          - Install your Ghost blog using Docker, more info at docs.ghost.org/install/docker and see the section on at docs.ghost.org/install/docker#. There are no limits on this option.

          - Use ghost.org's ActivityPub service, but this has limits for self-hosters of 2000 follows, 2000 followers and 100 interactions per day (more info at docs.ghost.org/hosting#hosted-).

It's one of a number of areas where Ghost has oversold itself. Talking up third-party subscription features that are folded into their hosted service, in ways that create a false impression of what a self-hosted instance can do. Email subscriptions is another example.

Self-host your own media server today and stop feeding the beast. The best two options IMO are Plex and Jellyfin (open source).

I'm strongly leaning towards giving up hosting my own email. I've been doing it for 25 years this November, and I'm about done with jumping though all the hoops needed to get mail delivered.

Is there a company you can recommend that will take over all the work and give me an imap account?

I don't mind paying a reasonable sum per year, but I'd really like my email to work again consistently so I can move away from google.

I'm curious to hear what others are ! Here's my current setup:

                              Hardware & OS

                              Infrastructure & Networking

                              • Authelia (Docker): Just set this up for two-factor authentication and single sign-on. Seems to be working well so far!
                              • LLDAP (Docker): Lightweight LDAP server for managing authentication. Also seems to be working pretty well!

                              Productivity & Personal Tools

                              Notifications & Development Workflow

                              • Development Environment: Mostly using VSCode connected to my server via Remote-SSH extension.

                              Accessibility Focus ♿️🖥️

Accessibility heavily influences my choices—I use a screen reader full-time (), so I prioritize services usable without sight (). Always open to discussing accessibility experiences or recommendations!

                              I've also experimented with:

                              • Ollama (): Not enough RAM on my Pi.
                              • Habit trackers like Beaver Habit Tracker (): Accessibility issues made it unusable for me.

I don't really have a media collection, so no Plex or Jellyfin here ()—but I'm always open to suggestions! I've gotten a bit addicted to exploring new self-hosted services! 😄

What's your setup like? Any cool services you'd recommend I try?

the best thing about hosting your own server, is watching other social media platforms (and also fedi servers) catch on fire and explode over silly avoidable drama, while you don't even have to try to keep whatever you don't like out of your domain.

is super easy. In fact I'd say the hardest part is to *not* touch it. You should put it somewhere on some device you can also avoid touching. Only do updates (and preferably automate those), then your server is basically indestructible.
