Controversial spying law expires tonight. The will continue.

Title VII of the Foreign Intelligence Act (FISA) is set to expire at midnight tonight after Congress failed to pass an extension of the controversial spying law. But that doesn't mean the government's spying powers will disappear.

Surveillance under of FISA "operates under yearlong certifications approved by the FISA Court," the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law explained this week. The current certification will remain in place until March 2027 under the yearlong certification issued by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court on March 17, 2026.

‘You Will Not Speak on Tonight’: County Commissioner Refuses to Let Residents Opposing Flock Speak at Meeting

A County Commissioner in refused to let dozens of residents speak opposing Flock at a public meeting this week, instead forcing the group to designate one single spokesperson.

“How many people are here for public comment dealing with license plate readers AKA Flock?,” Michael Garrison, the chairman of the Madison County Board of Commissioners began the public meeting by saying. Nearly everyone in the audience’s hand went up. “Probably most everybody. Per our county policy, I’m going to respectfully ask that you guys take a few minutes to converse with each other, designate one person to speak … we’ll move forward with only one person, whoever that happens to be.”

“What? No. We all want to speak on this,” someone in the crowd said; others can be heard trying to object as well.

We wrote an honest comparison of Zerion against Signal, WhatsApp, Telegram, Threema, Wire, Session, Cwtch and Tox.

Honest meaning: Signal gets credit for pioneering post-quantum key exchange, Cwtch is genuinely close in spirit, and each app is the right call for some threat model.

Where Zerion stands alone: post-quantum encryption on every single message, and everything (including calls) over Tor.

"End-to-end encryption, in which data is encoded so that only users on either “end” of a conversation can decrypt their communications—and not the server that relays that information or any other interloper—has become the standard for modern privacy on the internet. But its very name suggests a kind of simple pipe with two openings. The metaphor, and often the encryption technology that has enabled that model, doesn't fit neatly onto the world of Slack, Discord, Google Docs, and the other multiuser, complex, collaborative software where people now live and work.

So one group of cryptographers has built what they describe as the foundation for a new generation of end-to-end encrypted apps, with a new metaphor: Instead of a mere pipe, they want to create “spaces” where users can hold group conversations, host information on a server, collectively make changes to it, invite in new collaborators or kick them out, all while maintaining the same strong encryption protections that prevent the server or network eavesdroppers from accessing their data.

That cryptographer team, including contributors from Harvard, Microsoft Research, and former developers of the end-to-end encrypted messenger Signal, today release a “preview” of Encrypted Spaces, an early version of a set of open-source code libraries, which is part of an architecture they've designed to allow anyone to easily build a rigorously end-to-end encrypted app that nonetheless enables all of the complex collaboration features that users demand from software today."

FISA short-term extension fails, 198-218. Good news!!!!!

                                              Here's Demand Progress' take:

"Adding warrant requirements to FISA is a path forward that has clear, bipartisan support. The only reason we’re up against the deadline now is that congressional leaders and the White House keep ignoring this obvious reality and obstructing privacy reforms from getting a fair vote.”
