This is why I always isolate my smart home devices on a separate guest network.

Many modern routers allow you to enable "client isolation" or "AP isolation" on the guest band, which ensures that connected devices can access the internet but cannot see or communicate with each other, nor with your main private network.

Smart plugs, bulbs, and cameras often have weaker security than computers or phones. If a malicious actor hacks one smart device, client isolation stops them from moving laterally to your laptop, phone, or NAS drive.

Overall, it prevents devices from scanning your local network to snoop on your private traffic or personal files. So even sneaky and greedy corporations like LG see and know nothing you don't want them to see or know.

You can still get full remote control of your smart home via the cloud — if that is what you're doing — without sacrificing your home network's overall security perimeter.

A new identity theft service launched on the dark web this week is selling digital scans of more than 153 million drivers licenses from people in the United States and Canada. Based on interviews with individuals whose licenses are available for purchase on this service, it appears to be siphoning images collected by a widely-used identity verification company based in Louisiana. KrebsOnSecurity also has learned that the New Orleans field office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) today launched an official inquiry into the source of the images.
