We want Zerion independently audited. A real security audit is how a privacy app proves itself, because code should speak louder than marketing, and we’d rather be checked than believed.

Audits cost money, and we’re independent, so we’re asking for help. Every bit genuinely counts, no amount is too small, and it all goes toward getting Zerion properly reviewed.

There’s no way to stop all kinds of tracking, but you can take the following actions to reduce the granularity of the datasets collected:

Turn off location services(new window) when not in use and deny apps location permissions.
Use a VPN(new window) to hide your real IP address. DNS filtering features such as Proton VPN’s NetShield Ad-blocker(new window) can also help bock ad and tracker scripts.

Differential privacy is a cornerstone of modern-day #statistics.

It allows the generation of datasets that are statistically relevant for a researcher, but that leak as little as possible about the individuals in the dataset.

                    It works on several principles:

                    • Suppression, usually by removing outliers from the dataset that could lead to easily identifiable targets.
                    • Coarsening, e.g. replacing a city with a region or a country, or a date of birth with an age range.
                    • Sampling, usually through the removal of random records.
                    • Swapping, where some attributes from different records may be randomly swapped.
                    • Noise addition, by adding or subtracting random numbers in a given noise range to the actual values.

From 1990 to 2010, the US Census Bureau primarily relied on swapping for the decennial census. Then, they realized that this technique was actually very unsafe, and that it was pretty easy to reconstruct individual records using the published statistics.

They eventually adopted the full differential privacy framework in 2020.

But some people apparently got annoyed with that. And the main culprit was noise addition.

Adding a normal random distribution to the data made the numbers noisy, and some people who rely on the US Census expecting its numbers to be fully accurate were very annoyed.

                    Who are these people?

Well, one category is that of demographers and social scientists. Still, their mathematical models can be adapted to take into account that they’re dealing with noisy data - especially if the noise gain of distribution is published upfront.

But the most annoyed ones are thos who used the Census data to reconstruct actual records of individuals.

Yes, you read it well. There are people who use public datasets that are supposed to be coarse, and leverage probabilistic models to reconstruct information about individuals.

One big use case in America is, of course, #gerrymandering.

Those nonsense spiky borders can be much more accurate when the Census data allows you exactly to identify who lives where and that’s their ethnicity, so you can dilute the voting powers of some ethnic groups much more efficiently.

Apparently those groups have lobbied the Federal government so much that they got it to release an order that states the following:

Any use of noise infusion is inconsistent with the Department’s policies

This is a serious attempt of a political body to interfere through legislation into technical decisions that should be uniquely delegated to technical specialists - and the academic consensus is currently that of a full differential privacy framework.

Noise infusion is the most effective pillar in the differential privacy framework to prevent identification of individuals in public datasets.

Weakening it is likely to make everyone’s #privacy worse, and benefit only very few and their interests.

                    #USPol

Zerion 2.0.2 is out. 🧅 Playstore Live - Fdroid underway!

No phone number — not even Signal can say that. No email, no server. Runs entirely over Tor; your data stays encrypted on your device.

End-to-end encrypted with hybrid post-quantum crypto. No telemetry, no logging — metadata-free by design.

2.0.2: more reliable broadcast channels, smoother onboarding, faster & more stable messaging.

Quick reminder that Zerion runs on exactly two things: Tor and donations. Every contribution goes directly into stability fixes, new releases and the iOS version we’re working on. No investors, no ads, no company behind us. Just us and the people who want this to exist.

A source wants to reach you safely. With most messengers that starts with a problem: they need your phone number, you get theirs, and a server in the middle logs that you two talked.

Zerion skips all of that. You share a QR code or link, the connection runs device to device over Tor, and no record of the contact exists outside your two phones.

On June 12, developers across Europe woke up to a 403 error. Not a bug. A geopolitical decision. ⚠️

The U.S. government banned Anthropic's most advanced AI models for European users overnight. No warning. No appeal. Just a kill switch.

If the infrastructure is American, someone else holds the keys.

                                                        ... [SENSITIVE CONTENT]

**First entry into RetroShare: how to find peers**

In RetroShare you don’t “find people” in the usual sense. You don’t search — you agree. This is a fundamental mindset shift; without it, the first launch will always feel empty.

The first thing to accept: there is no global lobby in RetroShare. The emptiness after installation is not a bug, but the honest state of a network without links. Until you have trusted contacts, you literally have no network.

**The basic method — out-of-band contact.**
Peers are found outside RetroShare. These are friends, colleagues, members of thematic communities, people from Matrix, XMPP, IRC, Mastodon, forums — any place where key exchange can happen safely. RetroShare does not start with a “search” button, but with the phrase: “here is my key.”

**The second path — a control peer.**
The most reliable way for first entry is a second instance you control, or a pre-arranged experimental partner. This removes uncertainty: if the connection fails, the issue is technical, not social.

**The third path — thematic islands.**
There are small RetroShare communities built around ideas: privacy, P2P, darknet research, offline activism. They are not widely advertised because the network is not designed for random influx. Entry always starts with dialogue, not a click.

                                                        **What does not work.**
Publishing keys into the void. Waiting for someone to add you. Relying on auto-discovery. This is centralized-network thinking applied to a system where it has no meaning.

**How to know you’ve found a peer.**
The contact comes online. The connection stabilizes. Services start working: chat, forums, file exchange. At that point RetroShare stops being an abstraction and becomes an environment for communication.

                                                        **Bottom line:**
in RetroShare, people appear first —
and only then does the network emerge.

But its very name suggests a kind of simple pipe with two openings. The metaphor, and often the encryption technology that has enabled that model, doesn't fit neatly onto the world of Slack, Discord, Google Docs, and the other multiuser, complex, collaborative software where people now live and work.

So one group of cryptographers has built what they describe as the foundation for a new generation of end-to-end encrypted apps, with a new metaphor: Instead of a mere pipe, they want to create “spaces” where users can hold group conversations, host information on a server, collectively make changes to it, invite in new collaborators or kick them out, all while maintaining the same strong encryption protections that prevent the server or network eavesdroppers from accessing their data.

That cryptographer team, including contributors from Harvard, Microsoft Research, and former developers of the end-to-end encrypted messenger Signal, today release a “preview” of Encrypted Spaces, an early version of a set of open-source code libraries, which is part of an architecture they've designed to allow anyone to easily build a rigorously end-to-end encrypted app that nonetheless enables all of the complex collaboration features that users demand from software today."
