The Mercator map projection keeps generating controversy, because it is completely fucked up. Greenland looks like it's the size of South America (it's about the size of Algeria). Antarctica looks like it dwarfs all of Eurasia (it's a bit smaller than Russia). Africa looks like it's a lot smaller than it actually is, and the centre of the world (at least longitudinally) is conspicuously Greenwich in England.

It has one redeeming feature (and all the aforementioned was *not* considered politically incendiary back in the 1500s!), and that is that a straight line on a Mercator map corresponds to a straight bearing on the actual globe. So it's incredibly useful for navigation - especially when this involved compasses and sextants and paper, rather than GPS trackers and satellites and computers. This was *the* killer feature back when it was invented: A lot of formerly very tricky navigational problems now collapse into "keeping your ship going straight".

But *because* it so greatly distorts the sizes of landmasses, it's probably not the best choice for eg. a school classroom world map, where it mostly creates misconceptions and its main quality has little use.

Here is my favourite alternative, the Dymaxion projection, which balances right on the knife edge between "utterly brilliant" and "batshit insane".

In this post, we go through the Settlement’s provisions in detail and explain why that is so, including how:

- The Settlement embeds age assurance technology and age-gates into Meta’s social media products and requires all users—minors and adults—to undergo a rights-threatening age estimation process

- The Settlement places severe restrictions on Teens that can largely only be modified by the Teens’ parents and only then in exchange for giving their parents a ton of information about their online community and usage;

The legal math on media is broken. The punitive measures are not effective deterrents.

If you look at the numbers, Meta does harmful things, apologizes, pays a pittance, and still comes out ahead financially.

Zuckerberg sold out his users data to Cambridge Analytica, influencing the US election. Then he appeared before Congress like a contrite little schoolboy - "Oops! I didn't mean to accidentally cut multibillion dollar deals and sell out Facebook users. Honest mistake. I promise not to do it again ( unless the price is right! )"
Because of the math, he still came out ahead.

I left Meta's platforms a long time ago.

People who are not savvy, are locked into the Facebook walled garden, because of the Network Effect. ( "I can't leave Facebook. All my friends are on Facebook!" )

Having liberated ourselves, it is our duty to liberate others, who are still trapped, to give them their right to privacy.

Here's a plan of action:

1) Place ads on Facebook, explaining the benefits of #Mastodon

1.1) Freedom from Meta's censorship and algorithms.

1.2) A community owned, open social media platform.

2) When a user clicks, guide them through exporting their data from Facebook, and deleting their Facebook account.

4) If they skip the optional questionnaire, pick a random Mastodon instance for them.

5) Give them an option to enter into a Facebook migration registry.

6) Help them set up a Mastodon account and import their data.

7) If they opted into the migrant registry, reconnect them with their former Facebook connections, who also joined the registry. Like a reunion in Heaven with your loved ones. ☺️

"Age verification (laws and regulations requiring platforms and websites to assure or estimate that a user seeking to use an online service is of a certain age) is everywhere. At the time of writing, about half the states in the US have some internet age verification law in place, and dangerous proposals, from the KIDS Act to the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA), have been advancing at the federal level. European Union member states are moving toward having age verification in a centralized app by the end of this year. Australia famously now has one extremely broad restriction in place.

Most age verification laws tend to fail at their primary goal of barring kids from being online or from entering only specially designated zones, not to mention they pose a significant threat to everyone’s privacy. Some proponents of these age-based internet restrictions think they've found the silver bullet: Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKPs). We wrote about ZKP’s when they were first rolled out in the age verification context last year. However, more recent examples show our concerns weren’t just conjecture; ZKP-focused AV schemes are gameable, hackable, and not the cure-all some may claim."

“Surveillance technology startup Flock announced a series of new policies and tools on Thursday, claiming they will help curb abuse of its automated license plate camera reader systems and help keep its law enforcement customers accountable.

Flock is now recommending police departments retain data for seven days rather than the previous 30 days. Along with this change, the company introduced what it calls “Evidence Mode,” which can be turned on when customers need to retain data for longer periods in “exceptional cases” and requires a specific case number. Customers will also now be able to set limits on the data they share with other customers based on the type of offense that’s under investigation.

The company also highlighted a tool called “Audit Assistance” as one of the key changes. Flock launched the tool in April. Since then, Flock said “more than one-third” of its customers have turned it on, and the startup is now requiring all customers to enable it by the end of the year.

Flock said Audit Assistance “detects abnormal activity and flags it for Administrator review,” according to the blog post released Thursday.”

And in California, it’s not at all clear how PatronScan’s business model of scanning IDs and sharing the information from those scans with other bars comports with the law. What i find very worrying is the very real chance that de AfD may be winning the next elections in Germany. It would be the comeback of fascism and nazism. There are no other words to describe it. It would severely weaken the EU at a minimum, destabilize europe. I know some state actors who would consider that a good outcome and will do everything to make that happen.

"For weeks, Verona, Wisconsin tried to get Flock to remove the three automated license plate cameras that its city council had voted to stop using. Flock told city employees not to remove the cameras, and a Flock employee told city officials that they were unsure whether the cameras could be remotely disabled, which led the town to decide to put black plastic trash bags over them until Flock eventually removed the cameras itself, according to emails obtained using a public records request by 404 Media.

The emails give insight into the process cities face while deFlocking themselves after voting not to renew a contract with the AI surveillance company. As we’ve previously reported, multiple cities around the country have decided to put black trash bags over their Flock cameras while they wait for them to be removed; this is in part because, until the cameras are physically removed by Flock, cities are unsure whether they have the legal right to remove the cameras themselves and are not sure whether they can disable their recording operations. The emails show Verona city officials telling each other that they had made multiple requests to Flock to have the cameras removed, and show a work order from Flock in which the cameras were set to have maintenance performed on them rather than being removed."

Now I know what a computer keyboard looks like for Russians. On this notebook, the English (Latin) characters are overlaid with #Russian (Cyrillic) characters. The English alphabet has only 26 characters, while Cyrillic has 33, so to accommodate the extra letters required for Russian, some punctuation keys are overlaid with #Cyrillic.

This particular computer is running #LinuxMint, the same that I use in the #USA!

"We created this project to give defense attorneys a practical toolkit: a set of model discovery and preservation motions they can adapt to cases involving specific surveillance technologies. And when defense attorneys don’t yet know what kinds of digital surveillance technologies law enforcement employed, the generalized model motion for digital surveillance technologies addresses requests for a variety of surveillance tools.

The models are grounded in constitutional law, Brady obligations (requiring the prosecution to disclose potentially exculpatory information), and Massachusetts Rules of Criminal Procedure.

These model motions were assembled to be useful right now, in real criminal cases.

These model motions are written to assist criminal defense attorneys practicing in Massachusetts, though the underlying constitutional arguments—rooted in core constitutional protections of privacy and due process—are broadly applicable across jurisdictions. Local discovery rules in other jurisdictions may be different, and should be reviewed by attorneys practicing in those states.

"The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) looked at ways to arm quadcopter drones with weapons, according to a draft version of its drone manual shared with 404 Media. A draft version of the manual, which was live on the NOPD website in June, said that the department’s drones could only be equipped with weapons with written approval from the Superintendent of Police.

The current version, live as of July 1, has different language: “The sUAS shall not be equipped with weapons or hazardous materials of any kind,” referring to small Unmanned Aerial Systems, or drones. According to the NOPD, the operations manual it published to the internet with the rules for weaponized drones was an early draft.

“The manual published on July 1 is the current published version of the policy. Earlier versions were draft versions that were presented for review before adoption of the current policy,” NOPD told 404 media. “NOPD has made it clear we are not and will not be equipping drones with weapons or other hazardous materials.” NOPD didn’t answer follow-up questions about how or why the draft version of the manual was published.

But the publication of a police drone manual that opens the door for weaponized quadcopters is important, and comes as drone companies and police flirt with the idea of putting weapons on their drones."

"The US’s excessive demands for travellers’ profiling and surveillance in order to stay in its Visa Waiver Programme are nothing less than blackmail. The EU accepting the terms of this power struggle is extremely worrying for the rights of Europeans and any third country nationals registered in European databases.

The scheme implies systematic transfers of biometric data and other highly sensitive and subjective “indications of risk” based on European national databases to the US government, which has shown a blatant disregard for basic human rights in its harsh and inhumane treatment of migrants and visitors. In that regard, the draft text does nothing to protect from discrimination based on political opinions, which is worrying because the US is already cracking down political dissent, including its unlawful practice of screening travellers’ social media profiles. The sharing of individual risk assessments to supposedly protect “public security and public order” under the EBSP could further target opposition to the Trump administration, support to transgender people’s rights or protests against the genocide in Gaza expressed (publicly) on social media, with potentially significant impacts, including detention at the borders.

Furthermore it is very difficult to know the terms of the negotiations as the talks are shrouded in secrecy. However, in May 2026, EDRi member Statewatch leaked a “revised version” of the draft Framework Agreement, revealing the direction the future deal has taken."

FBI training videos instructed analysts to redact Donald Trump's name from the #Epstein Files. As reported by Attorney Katie Phang journalist Allison Gill said FBI analysts were instructed to "HIDE Trump's name and politically popular people's names” contrary to the law, and before prioritizing survivors’ protected information. She said analysts had to find each appearance of Trump's name, “redbox it in the files,” log it on a local spreadsheet and upload the entries to a master spreadsheet. After Gill filed a Freedom of Information Act request, the FBI acknowledged locating responsive training materials on redacting Trump's name.

The FBI refused to release the
materials, as required by law. Gill said,
"FBI actually sent me a letter saying, we have training videos. They exist." Her federal case seeks access to those records, while a separate transparency lawsuit has already produced court-ordered disclosures from the Justice Department.
