It's a bit scary talking to some people these days, who's first (and sometimes only) significant computing experience is a smartphone or closed-ecosystem PC, and not a general purpose PC.
Real Stockholm syndrome stuff: "I'm so impressed by Apple, my 2019 macbook still gets updates! most android phones only get 3-4 years"
Well a general purpose PC gets practically unlimited updates if you install the right thing on it.

React-like syntax with WebComponents.
After spending some time with Lit, I really appreciated its lightweight footprint but wasn't a fan of the class-based components. While Vue offers a great approach, I still prefer the intuitive nature of React's syntax for debugging and deterministic rendering. This led me to a challenge: could I build a UI framework using WebComponents that completely eliminates the need for transpilation?
I have written a breakdown of the concept, the architecture, and where I want to take it. I highly invite you to take a look, check out the code, and explore the live demo.
* How it works: https://positive-intentions.com/docs/projects/dim/dim-jsx-webcomponents
* Checkout the code: https://github.com/positive-intentions/dim
* Storybook demo: https://dim.positive-intentions.com
Please note, while the project is open-source, this is a personal exploration rather than an attempt to launch "yet another framework." It is not production-ready and is built for my own upcoming project migrations, but I am sharing it in hopes that the methodology is educational or interesting to the community.
I would love to hear your thoughts on this approach. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or want to discuss the implementation details.

Leonardo is a $17 billion US defense contractor. It built a system called SignalTrace using sensors that clip onto existing license plate readers already mounted on street poles, overpasses, and police cars across the country.
Every time you drive past one, the sensor is designed to grab the Bluetooth and WiFi signals from every device in your car, tying them to your plate, and logging the time and location.
Your phone, your AirPods, your kid's tablet. All of it goes into the same file. A friend rides with you once and their devices are also linked to your plate.
Leonardo has sold this system to police departments since at least 2023. There is no federal law covering it, no opt-out, and no warrant requirement.

At WWDC 26 Apple today announced new operating systems all ending in OS27. (The numbering thing drives me nuts.) The entire keynote felt different to me from recent years. Almost as if Apple felt a bit humbled. Almost as if Apple is in a we’re in a thinking different mode these days. I may be reading more into that than is real, but I’m usually pretty good at sniffing these things out.

Apple chose the name Golden Gate for its macOS 27 version this year, and it looks like the folks in Cupertino heard the criticisms about Liquid Glass and have taken some steps to correct what I and many other consider design flaws. Although I’ve seen as many negative as positive reactions to the design changes, so we’ll see how that goes throughout the summer.
There was also quite a bit of time devoted to Parental Controls. Given the political heat big tech in general is taking politically here in the US and elsewhere that’s probably a smart move. The announcement stirred up a bit of controversy from folks not in favor of efforts like age verification. The devil will be in the details.
The big push though is all about Apple Intelligence and the New Siri, now called Siri AI. Trying to play catch up and recover from the mistakes of two years ago, Apple showed off some live demos in a separate meeting from the keynote. You can read about that on The Verge. So you have to consider showing live demos a plus over two years ago, although it was still in a protected environment. I’ll be looking for users to do the same as the betas roll out, even if it appears that there’s a waiting list for the New Siri. So, we’ll see how that goes.
Note that Siri AI, announced to roll out this fall, will be delayed in the European Union and China.
You can check out the entire keynote reduced to 26 minutes, also from The Verge here.
And this Mastodon post from Dwight Silverman sums up my some of my early thoughts as well.

To further sum it up my early thoughts, I’ll just say this. It’s going to be an interesting summer watching folks hammer on the betas, the first of what was released to developers today. The public betas will roll out in July. But we’ll have some early indications later in the week as developers begin working with the betas.
So, I’m still in wait and see mode. As should most of us be.

From the why-is-this-even-legal category: Meta has quietly added facial recognition code for smart glasses to its app. The feature, called NameTag internally, can reportedly identity people captured by the smart glasses’ camera as well as alert the wearer when it recognizes someone (We’re guessing this would often be used to avoid them). Read more from @Mashable, and say hi to people when you're out and about:
Hi everyone! 👋 I know it's been a while since I was last here, but I had a very specific reason for it. I've spent the last few months with my small team intensely developing a project I mentioned to you once before. Every moment of my inactivity here was simply coding, designing the architecture, and endlessly solving problems
Today, I am proud to announce - LibreConnect has moved past the phase of vague plans and become a fully functional app!
We managed to deliver what was absolutely most important to us - an ecosystem connecting your 💻 computer and 📱 smartphone that respects your privacy 100%. Zero external clouds and hidden telemetry. Everything is based exclusively on a direct P2P connection within your local network and strong E2E encryption 🔐
So, what can our app actually do?
- Virtual camera and microphone from your phone
- Mobile device file manager right from your PC 📁
- Notification and clipboard synchronization 📋
- Receiving and sending SMS/MMS from your computer 💬
- Two-way media playback control 🎵
- Remote keyboard and presentation control from your phone
- Finding your phone by triggering a loud alarm (overriding silent mode) 🚨
- And a few other minor conveniences
We also made sure the project is truly cross-platform. LibreConnect runs natively on
Linux,
macOS,
Windows, and
Android. It's worth mentioning that the app isn't limited to just x86_64 architecture - we support ARM64 as well! To make updates easier, we've set up our own F-Droid repository, along with native packages for Linux package managers (APT, DNF, Pacman)

The code is 100% open-source under the GNU GPL v3.0 license
However, I have to be honest - the project is still very young. The app is highly usable, but it still requires optimization, might have some silly bugs, and can occasionally be unstable 🐛
That's why we need you so much right now. For the continued development of this app to make any sense, we need a small but engaged user base. I encourage you to install it, test it out, and report bugs, and for those interested - to join the project as contributors (you'll find a CONTRIBUTING.md in the repo) 🤝
If you like our vision, leaving a star ⭐ on our GitHub repository is the form of support we would appreciate the most. It's these stars that will allow us to take the project out into the world! Because of this, for the next few days, my activity here will focus mainly on promoting the app and its features - we need your help to build the right momentum. Thank you in advance for your support!

It's been two weeks (already!) since I dove into [Replicant Space](https://replicant.space), a game where everything revolves around APIs. For those who love coding and building interfaces, that's the place
Recently, I added a 2D map of nearby stars so I can (more or less) see where I am and where I'm headed at a glance. It's missing the Z-axis, but it gets the job done
Today, I finally connected my base system to SOL with a relay network spanning over 50 light-years. This will be my main "highway", with more branches coming soon next, and to the megastructure under construction at URCALIS
Here are some screenshots about:
- The star map
- The star list
- A view of an AMI and its remote drones
- A little tool I made to figure out where to place my relays (using Euclidean distance, because the map view is poop and not very accurate for that)
- And another one to track down Bill by vector (still a work in progress, hehe).

The man who wrote "Don't be evil" said he chose it specifically so it would be hard to remove. Paul Buchheit, the engineer who later built Gmail, suggested the phrase at a Google corporate values meeting on July 19, 2001.
Then in early 2018, internal documents leaked showing that Google had signed a Pentagon contract to build AI to analyze drone footage. By April, over 3,000 Google employees had signed a letter to Sundar Pichai demanding the contract be cancelled.
The letter specifically cited "Don't be evil" as the standard the company was failing to meet. Dozens of engineers resigned in protest.
Sometime between late April and early May, the slogan disappeared from the code of conduct's preface.

PSA: Microsoft recently began enforcing automatic updates for all Microsoft Store apps. This applies even if an update changes the app's license / ToS, grants additional permissions, or converts to a subscription model. This is an incredible risk to your privacy, security, and wallet (if you have a payment method on file with MS). I strongly, strongly recommend disabling updates through any available method. Workarounds include blocking windows store in the firewall, uninstalling the store itself, tampering with windows files to revoke permissions from the store, or editing group policy settings (on supported OS editions only).

The emergence of AI has shone a light on just how thirsty for energy and water digital technologies are. A report released at the beginning of 2026 estimated that global AI use — and specifically the data centers that power AI — emits as much CO2 in a year as New York City. But before blaming chatbots for everything, a simpler way to think about the environmental cost of online behaviour is the amount of data being used at a given time. Read more from @sciencefocus:

Curious what other screen reader users, disabled tech folks, or desktop-first people are using these days for news discovery.
I’ve been looking at tools like Feedly, NewsBlur, Particle, and similar RSS/AI-assisted readers because I’m trying to reduce how dependent I am on my phone for news and discovery. Right now, Google Discover is honestly the closest thing I’ve found to “surface interesting things before I even know I want to search for them,” but it’s frustratingly mobile-first.
The problem I keep running into is that a lot of RSS advice seems optimized for people who enjoy building and curating feed systems as a hobby. I don’t mind some setup, but I’m not really looking for “an RSS sync backend plus another app plus a bunch of manual curation.” At that point it feels like the workflow itself becomes the job.
I’m specifically interested in tools that work well for:
I’ve also noticed that something can be “accessible” in theory while still being exhausting in practice. For example:
I tried Inoreader once and ran into a lot of unlabeled controls, which pretty quickly killed it for me. I’m currently looking more seriously at NewsBlur and maybe Feedly, but I’d really love to hear actual experiences from people using these day-to-day with screen readers or other accessibility needs.
Especially interested in:
Would also love to hear about alternatives I may not know about.

[quote] "The legal instrument protecting your rights as a user of Linux is less important than the commercial ecosystem built on top of it. And that commercial ecosystem as we have established is controlled by the same corporations paying a half a million dollars a year for board seats at the Linux Foundation. ... The message ... enforce the GPL, lose your friends ... violate it openly ... get a seat on the board ... The GPL is not dead but its enforcement mechanism has been systematically dismantled by the very organization that claims to steward it."[synopsis]
Linux Foundation has squelched the voice of the lay contributors and now corporations control the decision-making process.
Now that your contributions to GPL'd free software have created mega-millionaires and billionaires ... those same rich fat cats that profited from your free code now want to keep you from sharing your own free code or profiting from it while they violate the software license to cash in. They promote ideology campaigns employing useful idiots and ideological parrots to insulate themselves from criticism and hold themselves above reproach from the people they are exploiting to build their tech empire. The Linux Foundation has joined the empire.
I have said before that a new alternative operating system is required if software freedom and privacy are to survive. Linux is not the resistance against the system. Linux is the system.

I have a fantasy. It’s a sports fantasy. Actually it’s a sports viewing fantasy. Perhaps it’s an entertainment streaming fantasy. Regardless, it’ll never be fulfilled.

Just about every streaming service has jumped onto the live sports streaming bandwagon. That’s understandable. Sports attracts eyeballs. Eyeballs equal money. Money makes the balls bounce.
Streaming services that I turn to insist on pushing their sports investments on to the top of their poorly designed homepages, forcing the user to scroll if they aren’t interested. Of course streaming services homepages are notoriously poor user experiences to begin with.
Like I said, I get all the reasons behind this. I get that the streaming executives have overpaid for the right to stream whatever they’re streaming and are trying to capitalize on the investment, on the way to raising prices to cover that cost, and perhaps find a few new viewers who might not already be fans. It feels very much like my grandkids screaming “watch this, watch this!”
To be fair, things have gotten better. Streaming services that feature live sports have at least reduced some top line over exposure along the way, or provided tabs for different categories that segment sports and other viewing genres. But they could go further.
So, here’s my fantasy.
Give users an option to not see sports programming so prominently displayed on the already atrociously and algorithmically designed homepages. A simple switch that says “give me more of this” or “give me less.” Trust me, as someone who likes to view sports, I’ll find a game or a match that I’m interested in if I want it. And I’m sure there are plenty of users who will want to see sports programming prominently featured. So let viewers choose. Those who run these networks should be interested in that choice.
Streaming services could also extend a give me more or less feature to other programming. How many times do you need to see the same title displayed in different categories, or after you’ve watched it, or have to scroll past a genre you have no interest in?
Whether it’s sports or any other entertainment genre it seems to me it would be better to gauge interest ahead of time, instead of waiting for viewership numbers after the fact. Who knows, it might be a good way to provide metrics that might actually be meaningful when it comes to thinking about where these services are going to spend money in the future.
Like I said, it’s a fantasy.

#Meta to cut 10% of staff as it pours billions into #AI
Meta said Thursday it plans to lay off roughly 10% of its workforce, or about 8,000 people, the latest in a string of #tech industry #layoffs fueled in part by #ArtificialIntelligence.
The company is also closing around 6,000 open roles, Janelle Gale, Meta’s chief people officer, wrote in a memo published by Bloomberg.
The layoffs will go into effect on May 20.

I heard of TOR years ago but didn't bother learning more at the time.
Time to correct that I think.
"By using Tor for banal activities, when you aren't in any danger worse than a nasty ad-attack, you help to normalize the use of Tor and add more noise to the traffic. The more people do this, the more using Tor becomes just something people do when they care about privacy online, and nothing more."
