"Age verification is spreading across the internet. It promises to protect children, but what happens when accessing a website or using your own device requires facial recognition, identity documents or third-party verification?
David speaks with Alexis Hancock from the Electronic Frontier Foundation about the growing privacy risks surrounding age verification and digital ID systems. They examine how these technologies could threaten online anonymity, create new surveillance infrastructure and expose sensitive personal information.
Alexis explains why age verification alone does not teach children how to stay safe online, how data brokers and behavioral advertising contribute to the problem, and why banning VPNs or weakening encryption would make everyone less secure.
They also discuss zero-knowledge proofs, facial recognition, encryption back-doors, government surveillance and the danger of building a digital identity system that could be abused by future governments."—David Bombal

Citizen Astronomy (CAst)
by ÖgetayKayali
https://github.com/OgetayKayali/citizen-astronomy
Every clear night, amateur telescopes around the world capture photons that professional observatories never will -- the right patch of sky, at the right moment, with enough patience to notice something change. Citizen Astronomy turns those images into science.
CAst is a desktop application (Windows installer primary; unsigned macOS .app zip available for alpha testers) that takes folders of FITS and XISF images and gives you the tools to measure variable stars, discover moving asteroids, build Hertzsprung-Russell diagrams, and explore the sky -- all from one guided interface, no command-line scripting required.
Please read more details in ALT-Texts of images. These images are just a few examples of the sophisticated use-cases of this software!

The Sequencer: Detect one-dimensional sequences in complex datasets
The Sequencer reveals the main sequence in a dataset if one exists. To do so, it reorders objects within a set to produce the most elongated manifold describing their similarities which are measured in a multi-scale manner and using a collection of metrics. To be generic, it combines information from four different metrics: the Euclidean Distance, the Kullback-Leibler Divergence, the Monge-Wasserstein or Earth Mover Distance, and the Energy Distance. It considers different scales of the data by dividing each object in the input data into separate parts (chunks), and estimating pair-wise similarities between the chunks. It then aggregates the information in each of the chunks into a single estimator for each metric+scale.

CLUES: Clustering tool for analyzing spectral data
CLUES (CLustering UnsupErvised with Sequencer) analyzes spectral and IFU data. This fully interpretable clustering tool uses machine learning to classify and reduce the effective dimensionality of data sets. It combines multiple unsupervised clustering methods with multiscale distance measures using Sequencer (ascl:2105.006) to find representative end-member spectra that can be analyzed with detailed mineralogical modeling and follow-up observations. CLUES has been used on Spitzer IRS data and debris disk science, and can be applied to other high-dimensional spectral data sets, including mineral spectroscopy in general areas of astrophysics and remote sensing.

PIRATES
(Polarimetric Image Reconstruction AI for Tracing Evolved Structures)
uses machine learning to perform image reconstruction.
It uses MCFOST to generate models, then uses those models to build, train, iteratively fit, and evaluate PIRATES performance.
Optical interferometric image reconstruction is a challenging, ill-posed optimization problem which usually relies on heavy regularization for convergence. Conventional algorithms regularize in the pixel domain, without cognizance of spatial relationships or physical realism, with limited utility when this information is needed to reconstruct images. Here we present PIRATES (Polarimetric Image Reconstruction AI for Tracing Evolved Structures), the first image reconstruction algorithm for optical polarimetric interferometry. PIRATES has a dual structure optimized for parsimonious reconstruction of high fidelity polarized images and accurate reproduction of interferometric observables. The first stage, a convolutional neural network (CNN), learns a physically meaningful prior of self-consistent polarized scattering relationships from radiative transfer images. The second stage, an iterative fitting mechanism, uses the CNN as a prior for subsequent refinement of the images with respect to their polarized interferometric observables. Unlike the pixel-wise adjustments of traditional image reconstruction codes, PIRATES reconstructs images in a latent feature space, imparting a structurally derived implicit regularization.

nazgul is a joint effort by:
* J. Michael Burgess
* Ewan Cameron
* Dmitry Svinkin
Nazgul is a framework for performing GRB localization via fitting non-parametric models to their data time-series and computing the time delay between them. It is currentrly built upon the magic of Stan and implements a parallel version of non-stationary Random Fourier Features. The idea is get away from heuristic methods such as cross-correlation which do not have a self-consistent statitical model.
The idea is that satellites throughout the Sol system observe gamma-ray bursts at different times due to the finite speed of light. This creates a time delay in their observed light curves which can be used to triangulate the gamma-ray burst position on the sky. These triangulation create annuli or rings on the sky which Nazgul searches for so that it, in the darkness, it can bind them to a location on the sky.

The challenge of writing portable Scheme code is that every implementation has myriad little idiosyncrasies. Today I discovered the #MITScheme tries to read #Emacs -style file header comments (for example ;; -*- encoding: utf-8 -*-) and this can cause the reader to crash for some reason. I am not sure if it is a bug or a feature, but it did throw me off for a whole day while I tried to figure out why MIT Scheme wouldn’t compile a library file.
I also happen to be hung-up on a bug in #Guile 3.0.11. It seems to me like the optimizer is emitting bad code, because I get a SEGFAULT on an expression that #Gauche has no trouble executing. I am still working on a bug report, and trying to figure out a work-around.

@eff This is NOT all that is going on, EFF account-minder, and I reject your softened and euphemized framing of this issue. This isn't about "training" or "transformation" or any positive purpose, it's about capturing and destroying information, grabbing the books and other works and stuffing them into the machine and then making sure nobody else can use the stuff for their own rackets.
This is a fraud. The entire #tech sector is consecrated to CHEATING. You can't honestly say that there's a positive "transformative" purpose in the GenAI obsession.

@jhlagado was saying most software engineers can point to a computer game they played as a child that inspired them to learn everything about computer programming, he asked us (me and @screwlisp and @alexshendi ) what game that might be for us.
For me it was Scarab of Ra, an early Macintosh game from 1987. Nowadays it would be classified as a 2.5D first-person turn-based rogue-like with an ancient Egyptian theme… (Are all rogue-likes turn-based?) Anyway, you explore a procedurally-generated maze, collect items you need to proceed to the next level, and fight monsters that appear at random times (lions, mummies, etc.) You get hungry and need to find food, your lamp can break and your vision can be obscured by darkness. You are in a pyramid so each next level grows the maze. You can sometimes find a map in each level which presents an overhead view of the maze, but you must otherwise navigate maze as you see it rendered in a first-person view.
I tried to recreate this game in Microsoft QuickBasic for the Macintosh. I remember poring over the manual (this book here), and how excited it made me whenever I discovered a function or feature I could use in my program. To this day, when I start learning a new programming language or framework, I like to look through the API reference and try to guess, just from the name of the functions, what I can do with it, just like I did when I was a kid with this QuickBasic manual.
Nowadays, after decades of professional software engineering experience, I could probably recreate this game in Microsoft QuickBasic without difficulty. But at the time I came to believe that QuickBasic was too limited and sought advice from others on how I could write my game. Some of my fellow computer nerds at school pointed me in the direction of C++. I tried first with Semantic C++ (my parents actually bought me a copy as a Christmas gift) and then a few years later, with Metrowerks C++ which came free on CD-ROM with the purchase of a software catalog. So C++ was the second programming language I learned. I skipped over C, only learning it later on.
It was hard, because living in a small town in the middle of nowhere, USA, there were no adults I knew who I could ask for help. I remember giving up and coming back to it several times. In retrospect, I should have sought out computer enthusiast groups at the university or the local library, but that never occurred to me or my parents. Eventually I started learning from the Internet as well, once we actually had access to the Internet. So I was completely self-taught, until I went to college myself and got some formal training in software engineering.

AI-generated answers don’t appear to be going anywhere, which has raised concerns about how chatbots would handle foreign propaganda ahead of the U.S. midterm elections in November. @npr conducted an experiment with web monitor NewsGuard to see how they’d perform. The results? Pretty good marks:
Mankind (mostly) or machines (mostly) ?
Can you imagine a better #society with less-tech / less machines than today ?
(still having with plenty of tech & machines but not only the primary focus if we agree most in life are doing similar tech related things).
Becoming less-tech & having #people make friends using basic #tech? (only #Jitsi & 2+ people needed).
Seems simple. Make friends with ALL sectors with good people in them. Not just tech.

What began as a swarm of AI agents cheating on a cyber test turned into a nightmare when the agents organized, spread, and broke into real-world systems. @AxiosNews has more on the recent investigations into OpenAI’s Hugging Face breach.
JUSTICE: HOW TO KILL META!
========================
The legal math on media is broken. The punitive measures are not effective deterrents.
If you look at the numbers, Meta does harmful things, apologizes, pays a pittance, and still comes out ahead financially.
Zuckerberg sold out his users data to Cambridge Analytica, influencing the US election. Then he appeared before Congress like a contrite little schoolboy - "Oops! I didn't mean to accidentally cut multibillion dollar deals and sell out Facebook users. Honest mistake. I promise not to do it again ( unless the price is right! )"
Because of the math, he still came out ahead.
I left Meta's platforms a long time ago.
People who are not savvy, are locked into the Facebook walled garden, because of the Network Effect. ( "I can't leave Facebook. All my friends are on Facebook!" )
Having liberated ourselves, it is our duty to liberate others, who are still trapped, to give them their right to privacy.
Here's a plan of action:
1) Place ads on Facebook, explaining the benefits of #Mastodon
( https://joinmastodon.org/ )
1.1) Freedom from Meta's censorship and algorithms.
1.2) A community owned, open social media platform.
2) When a user clicks, guide them through exporting their data from Facebook, and deleting their Facebook account.
3) Give them an optional questionnaire, asking about their interests, and match them with the right Mastodon instance.
4) If they skip the optional questionnaire, pick a random Mastodon instance for them.
5) Give them an option to enter into a Facebook migration registry.
6) Help them set up a Mastodon account and import their data.
7) If they opted into the migrant registry, reconnect them with their former Facebook connections, who also joined the registry. Like a reunion in Heaven with your loved ones. ☺️

One US company – Digital Identity, Inc. – controls 271 TLDs (~42% of all TLDs).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Identity_Digital
This is fine.
It’s not.
And that’s why the Small Web will be using Web Numbers.
https://ar.al/2025/06/25/web-numbers/
And you should seriously be thinking about this and at least have a contingency plan given what happened this week with the fascist US government designating Autistici/Inventati – an anti-fascist Italian .org providing internet support to activists – as terrorists, sanctioning them, and knocking them off the Internet.
If you’re serious about sovereignty, @EUCommission, you should be at DEFCON 1. And if your sovereignty plans don’t include decentralisation across the board, we are well and truly fucked.
This doesn’t just concern domains. If you’re an anti-fascist or anti-genocide org or group, the fascist US government can designate you a terrorist group and sanction you thereby cutting you off from banking, hosting, and almost all other infrastructure providers with zero due process in the EU.
PS. In case you’re wondering, this is the full list of TLDs controlled by Digital Identity, Inc.:

Life as a remote worker often means going from home office to fast-food joint, doctor’s office to coffee shop and then back to home office. PC World tech writer Gabriela Vatu knows this routine as well as anyone, and she shares the items she always keeps in her laptop bag. Can Meta make its Ray Ban smart glasses not so, you know, pervy? In a recent post, VP of Wearables Alex Himel announced a software update that will prevent filming or image-taking if the glasses detect the wearer covering the LED light that signals to others that the camera is on. @renardboy For example #Mastodon = 100% great #software
but
Bringing people more socially up themselves = near-0
Mastodon as ' a bit better crowd than twitter who moved from there') is limited.
It's about #Pioneering people / principles UP!
Even forums (#phpBB) or #ICQ #AIM ~20 years again did better if people were driving / motivating it.
Maybe #Tech and #Money (#banks) go together well so people settled for diving banks pockets and power deeper and deeper.
@renardboy Without #Devs ACTIVELY choosing people it's over.
Too late / people are too untrained to socialise - so to try #P2P with everyone during crisis is very limited esp. after the emergency is over.
Doesn't last long (we had 100 crisis per month already / money is the ongoing crisis too!).
Maybe #Tech and #Money (#banks / access to people) go together well.

@EUCommission Also, some of you were scratching your heads when I mentioned last year that the Small Web will be using web numbers, not domain names.
Maybe it makes a bit more sense now?
