I like Mastodon, I really do. But it has so, so many dependencies, and updating it on illumos or OpenBSD is getting really difficult, release after release.
Some dependencies are primarily distributed as binaries, or only build on Linux and macOS. It's not Mastodon's fault, but it depends on them.
That’s why, in my opinion, solutions like snac, GoToSocial, or littleFedi have a reason to exist: all of this is much, much easier...

On the other, whenever a post from someone you follow gets in, snac tries to retrieve (following the inReplyTo fields chain) all the conversation up to the beginning to give you some context in the conversation. It may happen that, if that account you follow deletes their post, the replied post is left in your timeline, for no apparent reason.

I know I get something similar to that when there is

Because it's technically impossible to set up a Fediverse server with absolutely no AI code underneath whatsoeverWell, that's not totally exact. I'm the main developer of the #snac ActivityPub server (and web client) and I'm actively against any AI or LLM. This is a line in the CONTRIBUTING.md file:
PRs, diff patches and bug reports must not incorporate any material generated by or with the assistance of any so-called "generative AI" tool or LLM.I've never used a so-called AI in my life and will never do.
If I recall correctly, the Gotosocial Fediverse software also have a very clear position in this topic (i.e. no AI).
You're very right in the OS positions regarding LLMs, sadly. The nearest to what I approve is NetBSD, but it's not totally clean.

As usual, we aim to provide actionable content you can use to destroy Techno Feudalism each week. It has the additional benefit of weakening authoritarianism.
IMHO, the best way to do that is to use tools from the Techno Anarchist Manifesto to build your own site(s) to participate in the Open Media Network. Then you should share it (them) via Real Simple Syndication (RSS), Open Social, and possibly a newsletter or podcast. This approach is similar to what some call the IndieWeb and its POSSE philosophy.
The second best strategy is to have accounts on open social and use the hell out of them. And do the same with a RSS feed reader.

Improved support for text-only web browsers: it's now possible to configure a set of web browser user-agent strings that will receive simpler HTML in the private timeline web UI. Basically, it consists in avoiding details / summary HTML tags as much as possible.
Added some fixes to media proxy code.
Fixed EmojiReact code to allow any emoticon defined in emojis.json, not only those with colon-wrapped identifiers.

The CPU was baked from the snac process running at max. I shutdown nginx so that no traffic was coming through and snac was still sitting there chewing through the CPU -- even after a reboot.
It's been more than six months here, maybe it's time for me to built and migrate again.

set up a #snac instance just a few weeks ago.
It’s been purring along nicely, without ever giving me any trouble.
There is a person I've been helping for a while who runs two instances, one #GoToSocial and one #snac.
Yesterday, they suffered severe file system corruption on their device, and I lent them a hand with the recovery. For GoToSocial, they restored the DB from the previous backup and got it running again. For snac, although a few files were lost, no action was necessary... it just started back up and did what it had to do, bringing the instance back to full operation.
This goes to show that when software is well-designed and intentionally kept simple, it's also easier to get back up and running when something goes wrong. In this case, snac's "files-only" approach demonstrated excellent resilience.

Somehow my main instance, which is a large Mastodon server operated by professionals, is significantly slower than my little single-user #snac instance running on the Raspi Zero in my shelf.
I may change it to return the correct code eventually, but I don't consider it a priority.
The author of a replied post is no longer added to the CC: line, as it does not have much sense.
Fixed mentions for users with hyphens in their identifiers.
Unlisted replies to unknown posts were being skipped from the timeline, so don't do that.
If an actor marked as broken gets a post boosted (proving that is [back] functioning), it's unmarked as such.
Don't try (and fail) to parse non-UTC dates in posts (I'll provide a real fix eventually).
Fixed a redirection loop in the /users alias.
Mastodon API: fixed a bug that made changing the sensitive content string impossible, avatars and headers can be deleted (contributed by bm90).
Updated Czech and Italian translations (contributed by pmjv and fidiben).

I'm looking for something that is super low maintenance and lightweight / easy on resources but as full featured as practical within those constraints.
Something easy to tune re: post lengths and media types would be cool too. A "text first" platform is desired.
I've run Mastodon in the past and it's like fishing with nukes for this use case.
What's out there?

The former cluster member, now the only one serving my website, is with that power consumption now an ideal replacement. The wyse 3040 power consumption was around the same. with turbo boost enabled, the n4100 consumes up to 10W in total, and 5-6W in idle.
Running off grid from my solar system battery, every watt counts. So i am really happy to have this machine now at such a low power consumption.
I guess I will migrate the old #snac instance there, the old P II was too loud to let it run 😅

If you really believe in the silly 500 character limit, then why the heck is everyone posting "3/12" continuation threads?
Either the limit is a good idea, and nobody should post multi-part toots, or its a dumb idea, and should be retired (in favor of a ~6k post limit). One or the other. Cut the crap, already.
I'd 100x rather see long posts shortened with a "See more" button than yet another toot that ends with "1/" 🤦🏻♂️
Forcing people to create threads just to get their thought across is terrible UX, and I'm tired of being diplomatic about it.

Added a new admirations entry point to the web UI, containing a timeline of liked, boosted and reacted posts. Please take note that, after installing the new version, it will start empty, and be filled with subsequent reactions (contributed by violette).
It's now possible to disable showing posts in a given set of languages.
Nested quoted posts are limited up to 3 levels.
New configuration knob: by setting keep_replies_posts to true in server.json, remote posts that a local user has replied to are retained in the public timeline, preventing them from being purged (contributed by hanchan).
