soc.octade.net is a Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, users at this host can communicate with people that use software like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, etc. all around the world.
This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.
Well, it's official, I have torn down my site from surge.sh. Kind of sad since it was my first and only blog home.
The site's new home is Codeberg (ICYMI):
Site: https://readbeanicecream.codeberg.page/
RSS: https://readbeanicecream.codeberg.page/feed_rss_created.xml
So update your bookmarks and RSS feeds!
I still like the surge project and will keep my surge related posts there for informational purposes.

Today I'm releasing the first release candidate for the 2.0 release line of the Liferea RSS reader which is a mostly feature-stable port to GTK4. Please try it out and help testing Liferea 2.0!
@acallegaro I use #RSS every day, sometimes more. I have about 50 websites I follow and it's a great way to ensure I don't miss anything.
I'm using FreshRSS
Just wondering... Do people still use #rss? Do you have a #rssreader you rely on, or has RSS become a relic of the past?
And if so, what's your setup?
Found this amazing blog! Just go read some posts and add the RSS feed! Talks about a lot of things in plain language and how to fix them and provides a lot of links to essays and things that I’ve never heard of. I don’t agree with everything, but This Needs Fixin' – some things just ain't right https://this.needsfixin.net/ #Blog #Blogging #RSS

Trying to get into RSS for the first time. Anyone know which news feeds are decent?
English language would be great.
Tried one app but gave up as it couldn't or wouldn't accept a non XML feed (al Jazeera).
Trying Antenna Pod but so far scrolling is either standard MSN gumpf or things I've never heard of.
So any pointers on some decent English language feeds would be very welcome.
EDIT: Have found Al Jazeera RSS & have ditched Antennna pod.
Would still love recommends for decent news sources.
Please
& Thank you 😀
I consume my #news mainly via #RSS feeds of major news sites (#Guardian, #Rappler, etc).
Sometimes I open my feed reader, read a headline and think "I don't have enough room in my brain to hold an opinion on that", and I don't open the article.
The most important part of this story is that I've realised this is healthy. It's good to be selective and protect ourselves from overload. We don't need to know everything that's going on, let alone form an opinion on it.
If your feed reader is missing a feed or two try http://www.extinctblog.org/extinct/ with it's roughly monthly long form articles on Ediacaran fauna and history of geology. The long gone past of life and mountains that you never knew about so very present as a blog.
A new important discovery feature has landed in the #liferea code base to be released with 1.16.8 soon: blogroll support. Liferea will try to find <source:blogroll> tags in the feed or a <link rel="blogroll"> tag from the homepage HTML. It will display the blogroll as a list in the feed view. This way you can learn whom others are following.
Have a blog and an OPML file? Ensure to link it so that feed readers and other clients (browser extensions) can find it!
Hi all! I'm considering giving #RSS another try because I haven't been able to find a news app that works well for me. Before I jump back in, I'd love your advice on a few things:
I'm #Blind and use the #NVDA #ScreenReader, so strict keyboard accessibility is a must. I mainly read on my PC, though a companion mobile app would be a nice bonus. Does your reader play nicely with screen readers?
The last time I tried RSS, discovering good feeds was a huge roadblock for me. Are there directories, search tools, or tricks you use to track down the RSS links for sites you like?
I want to avoid the "huge pile of unreads" problem. How do you organize your feeds so they don't require high-energy maintenance?
Any tips are greatly appreciated!

As discussed yesterday, I've been working on #Stream, browser‑based RSS reader that talks to FreshRSS or Feedbin and treats feeds as a stream, not an inbox.
It is inspired by Current and Fraidycat, and focused on attention rather than unread counts.

Updated my SaaS Multi Status app with around 15 more status pages. Also if you are interested in the actual RSS feeds: I switched the feed definition from JSON to OPML so you can import them into the feed reader of your choice.

A new Twitter/Facebook feed creator appeared. Those services while very useful tend to be short lived. The content silos dislike crawling. For the moment you can get public Twitter feeds again.
I added something very useful to https://lwindolf.github.io/rss-finder : you can now search only for feeds of #indieweb sites or for feeds of #fediverse authors. So far those results were quite hidden among the rest of the results.
Right now there are only several hundreds of feeds matching those tags, but more will follow with the next monthly crawl.
If you are missing a great blog/feed/podcast please let me know so I can add it to the index.
Many moons ago, I used #RSS feed readers to read blogs. A recent post by @pluralistic has pointed out that this technology is not gone, and we can use it to make the experience of the Internet, to borrow Cory's word, bearable.

OK. To all you out there in the know, a request for advice: what do I use on Ubuntu? I would really like not to see ads by the reader, it kind of defeats the purpose.
Huge thanks for suggestions.

I have a web based RSS reader I worked on a while back and I want to work on again.
Here's my page using this code.
At the top left is contact info based on a vcard file.
Scrolling down on the left are my feeds.
On the right are feeds I like to read.
This is a plain text program with no database. To add a feed you add a line of text that can be copied from the feed.
"For instance is there anything similar to RSS for gopher."The best way is likely to write a bash script to construct an XML file with a page per channel.
'cURL' should be useful since it support gopher, although you will have to custom script it.
'Lynx' browser also handles gopher quite nicely and you should be able to use the -dump feature and parse what you want.
'sfeed' may also help: https://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/resolute/man1/sfeed_gopher.1.html

There's #Liberapay, #OpenCollective, #ko-fi, #BuyMeACoffee, #Patreon, #Github Sponsors, #SEPA etc and crypto coins. If your favorite app developer does not yet support the one you like... feel free to ask them.
