"Back in April, bestselling #author #MegKeene came on #TheJewishAngle—with some reluctance—to talk about what she saw as a growing problem for #Jewish #writers in mainstream #publishing. She spoke about being quietly pressured from agents, #publishers and industry insiders to change Jewish characters’ names and hide #Israeli backgrounds or connections.
But rather than be excommunicated from the publishing world, her inbox filled up with messages from writers and publishers in the same situation. She’s since worked with the #AntiDefamationLeague and an offer from the publishers at #WickedSon to start her own imprint, #MegKeeneBooks.
Now #Keene is on a mission to #publish around four Jewish #fiction #books over the next year, from romance to thriller."

Is it more important that publications post on the Fediverse, or that they don't post on X?

"Following the #Hamas-led #Oct7 attacks on #Israel, #Jewish #authors have described an increasingly hostile environment in traditional #publishing. In fact, the number of #books marketed as Jewish have declined over the past three years — pointing to either fewer Jewish books, or fewer #publishers willing to market them as Jewish.
Even so, the demand for Jewish #romance #novels from Jewish readers has flourished, aided by The Matzah Ball’s #author #JeanMeltzer and a #bookclub she started called Jewish Joy.
“I think a reason why the community grew is because of what the romance genre itself offers the reader, which is basically happiness,” says #HeidiShertok, the author of two #Orthodox Jewish #romances and a leader of Jewish Joy. “We’re going to give you that happily ever after, no matter the struggles and the obstacles and the difficulties that the character is facing. And I think we need that so much right now, especially as #Jews.”

More on Meg Keane's upcoming publishing imprint.
"Over the next year, #MegKeene #Books will release four to six #novels that she and the founders of #WickedSon believe will elevate #Jewish voices and reconstruct a bygone communal Jewish #literary conversation. She will also edit a forthcoming #literarymagazine designed to shape the Jewish #book-buying audience.
"My goal is to make Jewish #publishing feel really cool,” #Keene told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
“I’m planning to acquire books across genres — male #authors, female authors, #romance, #thriller, literary #fiction — you know, the works,” she added. “I also intend to put everything I have behind each book, and sort of ask the Jewish community to support these books and make the case for them.”
This. Build our own institutions. They'll succeed.
"#Keene is the eponymous tastemaker at the helm of a new #imprint within #WickedSonPress, a 5-year-old #publisher that has released mostly #nonfiction that leans right.

It would be exciting to stop begging for inclusion and just suck it up and move on.
"#Jewish #writers say they are dismayed to learn that one of the nation’s largest free outdoor #literary festivals is scheduled to take place during the two days of #RoshHashanah, September 12 and 13.
#PrintersRowLitFest, an outdoor #bookfestival that draws thousands of #authors and $book lovers to the streets of #Chicago’s South Loop, announced the festival’s dates in April. But only recently, amid rising concerns about #antisemitism in the #publishing world, did some Jewish authors realize the schedule conflict. This year’s Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown on Friday, Sept. 11 and ends at sundown on Sunday, Sept. 13.
#BrianBerg, a spokesman for #PrintersRow, said that scheduling difficulties caused the overlap with Rosh Hashanah."
The AI-authorship debate is bollox.

The LLM-versus-human debate has been raging for several years now, and there seem to be two principal camps: human exceptionalists and agnostics. I suppose there may also be a small, misanthropic faction, but its members are remarkably quiet.

"Award-winning #author #DaraLevan is back with her second #novel, Shaken to the Core, and the buzz in the #literary community is palpable. Featured in People, Southern Living, and selected for Zibby Owens’ Summer 2026 Most Anticipated list, Shaken to the Core asks: When life is cut short, what do we do with the time we have left?
Dara #Levan is the #podcast host of Every Soul Has a Story, and a former pediatric speech-language pathologist who made her mark in #publishing with her 2024 award-winning debut novel, It Could Be Worse. Based in South #Florida, Dara is a community leader, a founding member of Artists Against #Antisemitism, and a contributor to the USA Today bestselling anthology On Being #Jewish Now."

"#Authors are eager. #Literary professionals want to help. Potential funders are paying attention. #Readers have already shown that the audience exists. What has been missing is structure.
We need to build something of our own. It should include a #publishing platform, yes, but also #editors, agents, marketers, reviewers, #booksellers, events, newsletters, donors, and readers working in concert. It should help #Jewish authors develop excellent #books, place them before the right audiences, and prove what should never have needed proving: Jewish #stories matter, and Jewish books can sell.
This wouldn’t be the first time that #Jews built institutions because existing institutions would not make room for us."
Shel Silverstein on success in creative fields (1975):
"I think if you're a creative person, you should just go about your business, do your work and not care how it's received. I never read reviews because if you believe the good ones you have to believe the bad ones too.
"Not that I don't care about success. I do, but only because it lets me do what I want.... I have an ego, I have ideas, I want to be articulate, to communicate but in my own way. People who say they create only for themselves and don't care if they are published ... I hate to hear talk like that. If it's good, it's too good not to share."
