Ein kleiner Teich mit Seerosen. Eine rosa Blüte schwimmt auf der Oberfläche.

Anyway here's something I saw this week in my short trip to Oslo - a new bird for me, in the form of a nutcracker!

These hoppy little corvids (crow/magpie relatives) live in cold and high mountain climates and bury nut stashes, digging them up from under the snow with their long heavy beaks during the winter months. They're also very speckledy, and have a very different balance to most of their cousins with a much longer beak and a short tail.

Iridescence in Mid‑Air

This image showcases the ruby‑throated hummingbird’s beautiful tail feathers and the iridescent emerald glow across its back. I’m not entirely sure what it was doing in that moment, but it looks as if it were about to shoot straight up into the air. Their acrobatics never cease to amaze me. During the spring and summer, I sit outside and watch the hummingbird air wars around the feeder. They don’t like to share.

Devils Tower National Monument located in Wyoming rises 867 feet from its base and stands 1,267 feet above the Belle Fourche River. Sacred to the Native Americans there are six tribes that have cultural or geographical ties to the monolith with the Lakota having strongest connections. Names for it include Bear Lodge/ Mato Thipila or Ghost Mountain. The Devils Tower National Monument was established on September 24, 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt becoming the first U.S. national monument.

I’ve been watching the hour‑long misadventures of Scully and Mulder in the evenings lately — The X‑Files. I know it’s an old show, but I never paid much attention to it when it first aired. Now it’s become a comfort show: easy to watch, doesn’t demand much brain power, and somehow still pulls you in.

One of the fun parts is spotting familiar actors in their early days, long before they were household names. Last night’s episode had a young Jack Black and Giovanni Ribisi. I caught myself thinking, Huh… Jack Black once did something besides comedy.

It’s funny how people drift back to the shows of their own generation, even if they’ve seen them a dozen times. There’s something comforting about them — the same way old music is comforting. I still listen mostly to ’60s and ’70s songs. They don’t make music like that anymore. And those songs carry memories; you remember where you were, what you were doing, who you were with.

Back then, a song had to catch you on its own merits — no MTV videos, no flashy visuals. Just the radio waves and whatever magic the musicians could conjure.

Old TV shows still air on the networks. There were so many westerns back in the days when black‑and‑white sets sat in every living room. And those antennas — reaching above the rooftops like a forest of metal branches. I remember watching shows on a grainy screen with just enough clarity to follow the action, and someone would inevitably head outside to twist the antenna a little, hoping to sharpen the picture. It’s funny how that whole landscape of antennas just faded away.

A cloudless soft blue sky, a dense woodland of mature spruce, fir and northern hardwoods. The forest floor is carpeted with bright green ferns and golden brown fallen needles. The afternoon sun is shining directly towards us though the canopy, silhouetting most of the trees and casting lengthening dark shadows broken by patches of golden sunlight. The leaves on some of the hardwoods and many of the ferns are catching this golden backlighting.

Time seemed to stop around Devils Tower, where craggy rock met the endless blue. Beyond the scattered pines, the mornings setting moon descended toward the summit, nearly brushing the rugged crown. The Tower and the Moon were two old travelers sharing a silent greeting as their paths crossed. My husband and I were hiking the rocky intermediate portion of the Red Bed Trail on the back end of Devils Tower regretting the choice to have taken the path off to lower grounds through the Prairie Town Trail. Our knees and legs were starting to ache. But then looking up we spotted the moon setting close to the Tower and were very glad to experience a special moment in nature. Devils Tower National Monument located in Wyoming rises 867 feet from its base and stands 1,267 feet above the Belle Fourche River. Sacred to the Native Americans there are six tribes that have cultural or geographical ties to the monolith with the Lakota having strongest connections. Names for it include Bear Lodge/ Mato Thipila or Ghost Mountain. The Devils Tower National Monument was established on September 24, 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt becoming the first U.S. national monument.

A colorful stingray portrait inspired by Ubuntu release name 26.10, created with Krita, Blender and 1% Gimp - GNU Image Manipulation Program. There are at least 220 species of stingrays. The cownose ray caught most of my attention, probably because it looks so cute. Stonking, a British slang adjective, describes something massive or heavy, something extremely good (no pressure!) or impressive. The stingray spends most of the time on the ground of the ocean. It camouflages by burying itself in the sand. Therefore I was drawn to the moment it casts a shadow on the ocean floor. The shadow developed into an oasis in the desert surrounded by sand dunes and puffy clouds. It also resembles the nights sky on its belly. This tiny oasis (at least in comparison to the giant stonking stingray floating above) is celebrating the annual stingray festival. You can see lots of tents in different sizes, sand buildings, flora (palm trees & shrubs), stingray kites, fire places, boats, jetties. You can also get a glimpse of the inhabitants celebrating with their friends, families, visitors and pets. This stingray is also giving everybody a cooling break from the extreme heat in the desert. I knew there was a tufted titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor) out there, but when I took this picture I was pretty sure I was looking at a young cardinal. I wasn’t as close to the bird as I would’ve liked, so the details fooled me at first.

I want to go sit outside and watch the birds this morning, so I need to get my fingers tap‑tap‑tapping. My feet are propped on my desk as usual, and the keyboard rests in my lap. It’s not ideal typing form, but it works well enough.

I thought about getting a fresh cup of coffee, but that would mean disturbing my “productivity position.” Fortune smiled, though—I heard my wife moving around in the kitchen and managed to cajole her into topping off my cup. When she brought it in, she asked about Charlie. I guess she didn’t see him and worried I’d left him outside. I called his name, and he appeared forthwith, solving the mystery of the missing dog.

I should clarify that he didn’t materialize from a puff of smoke or anything mystical. He simply trotted around the corner from wherever he’d been. One thing about Charlie: when I call him, he always comes running. There’s none of that pretending he doesn’t hear me like some dogs do. Charlie is Johnny‑on‑the‑spot—only his name isn’t Johnny.

I’ll grab my camera and head to the backyard with him. I sit in a padded patio chair, and Charlie usually settles beside me, patiently watching and waiting—unless a squirrel shows up. Then he charges toward the hole beneath the fence, and the birds flee to the trees. It takes a few minutes for the yard to settle down enough for them to return.

A colorful stingray portrait inspired by Ubuntu release name 26.10, created with Krita, Blender and 1% Gimp - GNU Image Manipulation Program. There are at least 220 species of stingrays. The cownose ray caught most of my attention, probably because it looks so cute. Stonking, a British slang adjective, describes something massive or heavy, something extremely good (no pressure!) or impressive. The stingray spends most of the time on the ground of the ocean. It camouflages by burying itself in the sand. Therefore I was drawn to the moment it casts a shadow on the ocean floor. The shadow developed into an oasis in the desert surrounded by sand dunes and puffy clouds. It also resembles the nights sky on its belly. This tiny oasis (at least in comparison to the giant stonking stingray floating above) is celebrating the annual stingray festival. You can see lots of tents in different sizes, sand buildings, flora (palm trees & shrubs), stingray kites, fire places, boats, jetties. You can also get a glimpse of the inhabitants celebrating with their friends, families, visitors and pets. This stingray is also giving everybody a cooling break from the extreme heat in the desert. I had an appointment this morning, so I’m sitting down to write in the afternoon instead. After the appointment, my wife and I stopped at a local Chinese buffet. The food was good, but I was a little disappointed that their ice cream machine was out of order. I have a weakness for ice cream. After lunch, she went into Bealls to shop while I waited in the car. I’d go in with her, but nothing in that store interests me—and they don’t have chairs. I’m not much of a shopper anyway.

Charlie is already making his little grunting noises because it’s getting close to his dinner time, even though it’s still twenty‑five minutes away. The closer it gets, the more animated he becomes. He wants to make sure I don’t forget him, which I’ve done a couple of times. It usually happens in the morning when I open a can and give him half. He gets half in the morning and half in the afternoon, plus a bowl of dry food to graze on if he’s still hungry.

For his afternoon meal, he gets the other half of the can topped with Milk‑Bone dog biscuits and a couple of Beggin’ strips. He’s spoiled, no doubt about it. Every now and then I’ll open the refrigerator to grab the remainder of the can—only to find there is no can. That’s when the guilt hits me. Oh no… I forgot to feed him that morning. And suddenly it makes sense why he’s been glued to my side all day. On those days, he gets a full can for dinner with all the trimmings.
