Remember when buying a computer meant buying a private digital vault, not a corporate surveillance terminal?

Between OS-level local screenshotting tools and AI semantic indexers, big tech is turning your desktop into a permanent digital paper trail for advertisers and security risks.

Switch to a desktop that respects your boundaries. features zero telemetry and keeps your data exactly where it belongs: locally on your machine.

Go install CachyOS and somehow manage to change both the console font in Limine, and upon bootup, and then tell me the documentation is adequate.

Hi everyone! 👋 I know it's been a while since I was last here, but I had a very specific reason for it. I've spent the last few months with my small team intensely developing a project I mentioned to you once before. Every moment of my inactivity here was simply coding, designing the architecture, and endlessly solving problems :heart_cybre:

Today, I am proud to announce - LibreConnect has moved past the phase of vague plans and become a fully functional app! :flan_hurrah:

We managed to deliver what was absolutely most important to us - an ecosystem connecting your 💻 computer and 📱 smartphone that respects your privacy 100%. Zero external clouds and hidden telemetry. Everything is based exclusively on a direct P2P connection within your local network and strong E2E encryption 🔐

So, what can our app actually do?
                            - Virtual camera and microphone from your phone :blobcatcamera:
                            - Mobile device file manager right from your PC 📁
                            - Notification and clipboard synchronization 📋
                            - Receiving and sending SMS/MMS from your computer 💬
                            - Two-way media playback control 🎵
                            - Remote keyboard and presentation control from your phone :ablobcatbongokeyboard:
                            - Finding your phone by triggering a loud alarm (overriding silent mode) 🚨
                            - And a few other minor conveniences :sparkles_fiery:

We also made sure the project is truly cross-platform. LibreConnect runs natively on :linux: Linux, :apple_inc: macOS, :windows: Windows, and :robot_3: Android. It's worth mentioning that the app isn't limited to just x86_64 architecture - we support ARM64 as well! To make updates easier, we've set up our own F-Droid repository, along with native packages for Linux package managers (APT, DNF, Pacman) :fdroid: :archlinux:

The code is 100% open-source under the GNU GPL v3.0 license :github: However, I have to be honest - the project is still very young. The app is highly usable, but it still requires optimization, might have some silly bugs, and can occasionally be unstable 🐛

That's why we need you so much right now. For the continued development of this app to make any sense, we need a small but engaged user base. I encourage you to install it, test it out, and report bugs, and for those interested - to join the project as contributors (you'll find a CONTRIBUTING.md in the repo) 🤝

If you like our vision, leaving a star ⭐ on our GitHub repository is the form of support we would appreciate the most. It's these stars that will allow us to take the project out into the world! Because of this, for the next few days, my activity here will focus mainly on promoting the app and its features - we need your help to build the right momentum. Thank you in advance for your support! :blobheartcat:

Age verification being forced into open source software is not a good thing. Some good news at least here.

With all the supply chain attacks, I'm looking at isolating my dev environments. The obvious choices include Docker/Devcontainers, VMs, using a VPS in the cloud..

I've started just creating extra users on my laptop, one per project, and keeping all relevant keys and credentials in that user. No sudo or root access, completely isolated from each other and from my main user.

I'm switching to so I can just log in to one of these dev user environments and edit code right there.

I want to take a moment to add to my previous post because I really want to get this off my chest and I feel like this platform is the perfect place to do this:

I am not criticizing Microsoft and Apple without just cause. I have long had a bone to pick with both companies.

                                                        Apple: proprietary, walled garden.

Microsoft: proprietary with no respect for user configuration changes or privacy.

For a while, I used Apple because I felt it was more secure and offered better hardware. However, this isn't entirely the truth.

Furthermore, I used Microsoft because it was convenient for gaming and workflow. However, once they forced all of my security settings back to their default configurations after an update, I had enough. That's when I realized Microsoft has absolutely no respect for me as a user and treats their users like a guest in their own house.

From my understanding, this is a fairly common evolution for tech majors. One day, I decided I wanted big tech out of my life and I kicked Windows off my computer for good and never looked back. I stopped using Meta's platforms and I am making the jump to GrapheneOS today. As much as it pains me to stick money in Google's pocket, I am purchasing an unlocked Google Pixel 10 Pro today and de-Googling my life.

As I have progressed through my cybersecurity degree, I have grown to value open-source software, transparency, and internet freedom. How can I ensure I have a strong security posture if the companies I am handing my data over to lack transparency?

Why does Meta deserve to have my government issued ID when they repeatedly sell people's data and can't seem to go a year without a major data breach?

Why does Google deserve to have unfettered access to my phone's root?

Why does Microsoft deserve to decide what ports I can close or what firewall changes I can make by reverting all of them as soon as they roll out an update?

It is my humble opinion that the conveniences people choose to accept in their life are precisely what landed us in the boat we're in to begin with. Subscription after Subscription, a complete lack of transparency, and absolutely no respect for our privacy and security.

While I understand Mastodon is largely for like-minded people, which is why I found my way over here, I hope that others will begin to realize how dangerous this is for our future and follow suit.

With that said, we should absolutely push back against legislation that aims to turn us into a mass surveillance state (i.e., California's AB 1043). This is where it starts but where does it end? I recall well over a decade ago people switching to Netflix because it was "cheaper" than traditional cable and people accepting MTX in video games because it was "only for cosmetics." Where did that get us? "What is this, horse armor?"

                                                                Linux apps can:

But I can't find a way to easily *reply* to comments in PDFs. The only consistent way I've found is to use the Adobe Acrobat add-on for Google Docs, opening the document within my web browser and replying to comments there.

Which works for PDFs *below 400Mb.*

Above that size, the add-on seems to let me reply to a comment, but when I click "post," it refuses to add the reply and then greys out the "post" button.

Unfortunately, this is a critical part of my business workflow.

And that is why I keep Windows around.

But I am wondering about a second work phone setup. I want a second phone but because it is for work I need a lot of apps that I wouldn't have on my personal phone (Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Meta, Uber etc.)

My question is, considering I need a full suite of "spyware" for work related tasks is there any advantage to buying a Pixel phone and flashing it with GrapheneOS or should I just use stock OS and not limit myself to the Pixel phone?

Or two forks. Or two tablespoons. I don't remember. The more annoying, eardrum-piercing the sound is, the better. It basically has a flat spectrum into ultrasonic.

Then view the Sox spectrogram of the recording and you see if it's rolling off somewhere or going all the way to the end.
