Gizmodo asks “Will We Ever Solve the Problem of Losing Data?”

I love this answer: “I know of one data storage form that can be permanent: a library. Or rather, a world full of libraries. Libraries aren’t perfect storage devices (nothing is), but they are fiercely committed to self-repair. A good library is a collection of people, technologies, and practices that pass an obligation—to remember the things we must remember—from the last generation to the next.”

I didn't get far into the paper until I got to this:

      > In other words, while they share similar features, print books and digital books are not the same product. In fact, digital books are not simply a product, but also a service.

ebooks only _turn into_ a service if we let them. An automated storage retrieval system is also a "service" but we don't think of that is physical-books-as-a-service.

One of the most popular new books out right now and after just one week it’s available to me.

            Why?

            Because libraries ROCK.

                THEY DID IT AGAIN!!!

My local library built out another seed library at a second branch!!!

The first one has been such a success that they've begun to install seed libraries at other branches. This one is smaller but is well used (see the "check out" list) and can be grown easily by placing more holders on the wall.

I like this approach. The main branch is using an old card catalogue. This branch is using wall holders. There's no right way to do it, just what works best for your area.

Word from the librarians are that they're mostly self sustaining. Many folks check out seeds for free, plant/grow/harvest their plants, and let some of those plants go to seed as well - returning those seeds back to the library (or checking in their seeds).

One seed turns into hundreds of seeds. The more this is used, the more it grows.

A close up of a seed packet showing that it contains Pea seeds, when they were collected, and tips on how to grow them.

📢 Today and tomorrow, 21-22 July 2026, our Director of Curriculum, Dr Toby Hodges, is participating virtually at the Library of Congress AI Literacy + Learning for Libraries, Archives, and Museums (LAMs) Summit. He will give a brief overview of current activities and suggestions for how summit participants can get involved in the AI Carpentry project. 🌟

The gathering, in Washington, DC and virtually, brings together leaders and stakeholders working at the intersection of responsible AI and libraries, archives and museums. The goal is to work toward developing resources that support the responsible implementation of AI across knowledge institutions that prioritise trust, authenticity, and the public good--building on and connecting to existing efforts. 👏

🗓️ Over the two days participants will:
                    • Day 1 — Share work and outcomes from AI literacy and learning initiatives across the sector.
                    • Day 2 — Engage in structured activities to develop shared resources and guides.

After the event, the summit organisers will summarise the key outcomes and share the resources publicly.

In the center background stand a white clapboard house and a large barn or shed. To the right, two large brown and white longhorn cows graze, accompanied by pigs, dogs, cats, and a chicken. Between the two scenes, two small cats face each other with the handwritten caption "Alas she's gone." The paper is aged with creases and torn corners.

Actual cookbooks are better than online recipe slop sites.

                                                Physical cookbooks are great.

Cool thing though, if you want to search for digital recipes online but don't want slop sites, use your local library's app and just check out an eCookbook.

                                                It's even ad free!

(You can also go checkout a physical cookbook as well! They have an entire section at your library for them! 641.5x under the dewey decimal system!)

I’ve come to believe that the vast majority of recipes on the internet are bad and physical cookbooks are more important than ever

Except for a handful of recipe creators I really trust (King Arthur for baking, old seriouseats, etc)

                                                I prefer physical cookbooks
