🆕 blog! “Which Copyleft Licence is Suitable for an SVG?”

The Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) format is amazing. It allows you to precisely define how an image should look. Written in XML, it uses various mathematical operations to display an image which looks crisp and clear at any size.

      Here's a trivial example:

Don't give your time or money to those who try to control everything on this planet instead spend it on small developers coding their brains out!❤️

Have awesome free software, (maybe) donate to the small or single developers once in a while and stop feeding the billionaires!

I more or less consider AI-generated/assisted FOSS to be "proprietary lite," and my attitude towards proprietary software is that I use it iff there is really no other alternative.

I just recently yeeted an AI-enhanced FOSS image editor from my phone, and just accepted that I would:

              • Have fewer and clunkier editing tools using the more legacy and truly FOSS* image gallery apps
              • Have to drop into termux to do some conversions that there's no truly FOSS app for so far (like #AVIF and doing "#LossyPNG" conversions)

              * Yes, I am absolutely implying that "AI"-written code is not truly #FOSS.

Since people can't be added to collections unless their Mastodon site is using Mastodon 4.6 or higher, I have to add people little by little as their Mastodon sites update.

Little by little I guess. I think in the end it will be a great feature! :)

This week: WhatsApp patched a flaw where a single crafted message could make your phone load content from an attacker’s URL. And India’s Telegram ban is now reaching users in the UAE too, a national court order cutting off people in another country entirely.

Two different problems, same root cause: centralized apps are both attack surfaces and single points of control.

No server, no surface to exploit, nothing to ban.

Почти хороший документ от SFC про рекомендации касательно LLM в FOSS проектах.

                                https://social.sfconservancy.org/objects/3ac6d3b8-798b-4d85-91a1-7103abe76548

                                Почему "почти"?

Потому что практически все пункты стараются балансировать между "pro-AI" и "anti-AI" позициями, но первым пунктом стоит:

The FOSS community should support, not just tolerate, those who outright reject LLM-gen-AI systems

А вот почему-то про поддержку тех, кто пользуется LLM ничего не говорится.

В целом я могу понять это и принять как политический поклон в сторону тех, кто устраивает истерику, но если заглянуть к ним в комменты, то видно, что это всё равно не помогло:

                                LOL WTF NOPE

FOSS projects should not shun contributors who choose to use LLM-gen-AI systems.

                                🤡

                                kinda stopped reading after

There are many intersecting ethical and moral issues regarding these systems, many of which are not currently fully understood

They are well understood and visible

I'm going to state this very clearly:
Projects/communities have an absolute right to exclude people whose behaviors they deem unethical, unsafe, or hostile from participation.
And deeming LLM-gen-AI use as unethical is a completely reasonable position.

Skimming the "Recommendations" document, I can appreciate you striving for a "middle-of-the-road" approach towards a very controversial topic, and I appreciate the parts where you acknowledge the issues and harms, particularly of paid employees on #FOSS projects being forced to use LLMs.

I can also understand the perspective of some that an absolute-anti-AI stance is somehow "simple" or "easy" compared to actually being vulnerable and humble enough to "dig into the nuance" of it all.

                                  But...

                                  Brah.

                                  Naw man.

See here... I'm all for being conciliatory and humane towards other people "trying to get the job done," and I totally understand that FOSS project leads are looking down the barrel of a cocked gun when it comes to the strain and pressure they're under, attempting to keep their projects alive and healthy with very little resources.
"Remember the human" is the best advice for times like this, when confusion and infighting would very well make monsters of us all.

But this really isn't a conciliatory moment. This is a close-up-shot-of-Picard-belting-out-an-impassioned-speech-that-would-make-Shakespeare-weep kind of moment.

While I respect the desire to take a layered, nuanced view of #LLMs, the FOSS world never shined by capitulating and compromising. It never shined by rolling out the red carpet for corporate white slavers.

FOSS shines in the obscurity and beauty of niche software running on niche hardware for the sake of freedom, not convenience.
I started my journey in 1997 by attempting to get a FOSS OS (which was guided by noble values) to work on my hardware, and failing. Three years later, it succeeded, while still being guided by noble values. If I have to surrender the amazing strides we've made in terms of features and hardware support to cling to some kind of niche FOSS OS which is somehow still guided by noble values, I think that's a respectable sacrifice to make. 🤷‍♂️

If we give up everything that makes FOSS FOSS for the sake of some utilitarian goal, what is the point anymore?

Do we need or want a FOSS nuclear bomb?
                                  A FOSS kill-drone?
                                  A FOSS grenade launcher?

If those ideas are (obviously) distasteful and horrid, then that means that there's something more to FOSS than just the license, and it's dismaying to see the FOSS world stripped of all of its values and virtues and somehow being appeased by, "But it's still Open Source!!"

If that sophistry actually works on us, then I guess we deserve to be plundered.

Canada’s Bill C-22 would force every messenger to build a backdoor or leave the country. Signal said it will leave. NordVPN too. Apple said it will never comply.

The government calls it “lawful access.” Every security researcher calls it a vulnerability.

No server means no backdoor to demand. That’s not a workaround, it’s the architecture.
