Yes, totally. I 'blame' #FOSS culture here. Most FOSS starts as hobby projects, when some dev starts to code. When the project grows and sees popular uptake suddenly countless different factors become important, requiring skills beyond coding. These are often badly accounted for. Product development, documentation, organization, PR. Here FOSS might take more example from how the business world operates and sustains, albeit generally not on the values that FOSS holds dear.

For #SX I defined the #FSDL here, the Free software development lifecycle, or #Fediverse solution delivery lifecycle, depending on context. It has different stages, where different roles and activities become important to be addressed. There are countless facets that need to be accounted for, for a project to become self-sustainable.

The challenge is even much tougher, when scaling it to encompass entire grassroots ecosystems, where everyone relies on robust #technology foundations.

How this is implemented is crucial for the future of the #fediverse. An app having app-specific integrations to some - indeed ethical - payment systems, is one thing. But for instance offering native #monetization features on #ActivityPub protocol level, and not thinking *very hard* about the implementation and impact of that, can totally enshittify the #fedi in no time in how it attracts the wrong type of people with dollar signs in their eyes.

The current app-centric fediverse is the playground of devs and "users" that have to swallow what they create and drop onto the wire. #FOSS culture is a poor model for the evolution of the fediverse, where the latter is an existing social space where people, the online residents, have their home. It is much more than a pure technosphere and playground for app devs.

Fedi isn't ready to be growth-hacked. If successful it'll undoubtedly see corporate capture with Corporate Fedi the outcome, same as the web.

Yes, that is true. But the concept of #SOSS takes that into account, being adapted for today's reality. It brings an extension to the idea of "working in public" that is common in #FOSS, and introduces "working in commons". This #commons is a more value-aligned protected space, where participants take care of each other's needs, following #sustainability-first principles.

Service-orientation that comes with the paradigm shift to the #ProsocialWeb is not just technical in nature, but extends into social-cultural space, where people are focused to satisfy needs on the basis of value exchange. Within this environment a commons-based value #economy may emerge.

There are already very promising technologies on the #SocialWeb that may be foundations for such an economy, such as https://valueflo.ws and the #Bonfire project, that is working to support the #Valueflows specifications.

#Fediverse today consists of apps and app platforms. It is entirely app-centric.

Since fediverse (luckily) didn't attract much corporate attention yet, it is dominated by #FOSS culture, where people on the #SocialWeb are all "users" that are dependent on FOSS developers to serve their needs. Every dev focuses on their app features first and #interoperability second, leading to a patchwork of poorly integrated apps, and a janky overall experience. The app delivery model is not much different than Web 2.0.

A paradigm shift is possible, to a #SocialNetwork of apps and services, a service-oriented #fedi. The efforts around the #ActivityPub API can be the enabler of this shift.

In this new paradigm devs introduce solutions to a unified #SocialNetworking space, delivering new services to participants on the network. On top of a robust Protocol Layer they model social use cases in the Data Layer, integrating with services and building blocks already available.

Having looked in more detail at the #SWICG document. That's not the 3-stage process I advocated for at the time, and I agree with you: It will not work. Such top-down formal ceremony just does not fit a grassroots ecosystem.

Generally speaking I don't think #W3C as a standardization body is up to the task of being a good host for the ActivityPub specification. It is a) not organized for our environment, and b) only takes care of the technical aspects. Our social media landscape has a huge social component, and this is wholly underrepresented in our app-centric fediverse, where people are merely "users" and #FOSS culture is the only driving force.

Today I think SWICG should focus on the 'Protocol implementer' stakeholder: How can they offer compliant #ActivityPub protocol implementations.

Then #FEP can focus on the 'Solution developer', relieved from the plumbing: What interoperable designs do they use to serve the needs of participants on the social network.

This week: an “unprecedented” number of Apple users received mercenary spyware alerts, a 30-40% jump over previous waves. And a phishing platform is using AI voice agents to call people posing as Apple Support, fishing for passcodes.

Different attacks, same target: your account, your device, your identity.

I think this is written by @idlip and I like this article a lot as well.

"Why was the software created?" is also a central question for Social experience design, and the answer should always be: "To satisfy identified stakeholder needs".

In #FOSS there is way too much "Let's create an app, and then put users in it" (followed by "Build it and they will come"). Which is a tech-first approach, not solution-oriented.

Чому ми вирішили зробити власний форк пошукової системи замість готового рішення.

Варіантів було небагато: платити за чужий API і залежати від лімітів та політики постачальника, або будувати з нуля роками. Обрали третій шлях: взяли відкритий рушій YaCy як базу і почали переробляти під власні задачі.

На сьогодні код змінений на 20-40 відсотків від оригіналу, і це не косметика.

Повністю переробили візуал і кабінет веб-майстра. Додали векторний пошук для релевантніших результатів замість простого збігу ключових слів. Побудували алгоритм, який відстежує запити без результату і використовує це для пріоритезації індексації. Впровадили систему виявлення неетичного контенту ще на етапі індексу.

І це далеко не весь список.

Готове рішення дає швидкий старт, але забирає контроль над найважливішим: як саме працює пошук для твоїх користувачів.

@stux I'm not sure who needs to hear it, but they're probably reading this thread... #Obtanium is a really neat alternative to the Google Play Store: if I understand correctly, I give it the URL to the git repository, and it can fetch the app and monitor for updates; the security-conscious crowd like this because it reduces dependence on a third party (like Google or F-Droid). So far I've got about a quarter of my apps through it.

#Olauncher tip: you can rename applications in the all-applications drawer with an emoji at the beginning so tat they get sorted to the top of the list. That way you get six extra hand-picked launchers on a secondary screen from the main eight.

The application names aren't sorted, because the emojis are different, but you could probably use something like a bullet "•" instead so that the names remain sorted.
