Old hardware doesn't have to mean obsolete!

I got both Ollama and Stable Diffusion running on my secondary PC using the Vulkan backend:

Intel Core i5-650 (2010) | 8 GB DDR3 RAM | AMD Radeon RX 570 (4 GB VRAM) (2017)

Results:
• Ollama: 5.5 tokens/s
• Stable Diffusion 1.5: 125.62 s for a 512×768 image (20 steps)

I tested Google's Gemma 3 4B (4-bit) locally. It is obviously not a large model, but it already works surprisingly well as a small tutoring assistant. For example, it can explain math rules like the product rule step by step instead of just giving an answer.

I built stable-diffusion.cpp from source. Once that was done, everything worked surprisingly well.

Source: https://github.com/leejet/stable-diffusion.cpp

It won't break any speed records, but it's a nice reminder that local AI is still accessible on aging hardware.

Zerion 3.0 is taking shape in the open. The dev branch now ships our full native protocol stack, with public docs for every layer.

In code and documented: per-message post-quantum encryption (Mode 3-Full, a fresh ML-KEM-768 encapsulation on every frame, not just the handshake), the wire format, the pull protocol, the Bluetooth offline mesh, and opt-in embedded I2P. Tor stays mandatory.

No servers. No accounts. No phone number. Read the docs and the code yourself.

We don’t release security features on trust. They get checked first, and the whole thing is open source so you can read every line yourself while we do.

Hello! If you use matrix and don't want to use synapse, I am a maintainer on and specifically recommend continuwuity.

We have made a recent release, 26.7.2, which is extremely good. If you are a continuwuity user and not already on this version, please update! Otherwise, it is the best version we have made so far.

                                              forgejo.ellis.link/continuwuat

Please note we have a huge website of documentation here: continuwuity.org/introduction.

and many unofficial packages for BSDs, Alpine, Fedora/RHEL distros, etc.

Calling in matrix via Element Call requires setup (livekit and jwt auth service), but does work well and we have a call room our community uses regularly. Multi-SFU works most of the time (mostly setup issues with some of the livekit installs lol).

                                              Hope your saturday is great!

So many companies especially in China stop the software updates/upgrades after like 2-3 years. And moreover, they also make it too hard for the communities to come up with alternative operating system for these devices.

Some companies lock the device to prevent installing custom OS.

Some release the GPL code with a 1 year delay. Which means FOSS community is 1 year behind to bring custom OS to the device.

All of these contribute to and they harm the planet. And many people are forced to buy a new phone/tablet every 1-3 years to get a newer Android version.
