⛓️ Today, Google has taken the next step in enclosing the #Android ecosystem by starting to enforce its developer verification program in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand.

No better time than now to recommend the best apps from everyone's favorite #FOSS app store, F-Droid.

We'll start: Librera Reader, Image Toolbox, LocalSend, AntennaPod, FMD, Capy Reader, Unexpected Keyboard, Voice Audiobook Player, Aegis Authenticator...

F-Droid 2.0 is finally out. The biggest update in a decade, and the first one that actually does not look like it was designed in a shed.

The whole app is a Kotlin Compose rewrite now. Navigation is down to three tabs: Discover, Search, My Apps. Updates are automatic in the background by default, and the new session installer finally makes the install flow on par with the Play Store (thanks, EU DMA).

The trade-offs?
- No more Privileged Extension support
- Tor auto-detection is gone, you now need a Tor VPN for that
- The panic wipe feature and the fake calculator disguise are also dead
- Android 6 support has been dropped

This a massive step forward for FOSS Android. But do read the release notes before updating if you relied on those privacy tools.

The GNU license promotes itself as promoting 'free' software.

It positions millions of unpaid devs to work for free improving software that only the billionaire class is positioned to profit from using.

Sure everyone is free to use it. But only the rich or well-connected are free to profit from using it.

Permissive licenses solve this problem. With a permissive license you are not required to donate your code changes to your billionaire competition.

In short, 'free software' copyleft is marketing propaganda that benefits mainly the rich and those with connections. The little guy must give his improvements to the public 'billionaire class' without compensation. The little guy can't make any profitable, proprietary software from copyleft sources. The megacorp with its resources can get around this in sundry ways.

Personally, I don't find software freedom as put forward by free software advocates such as @rms particularly useful at this point in my life. My programming skills are far below the level at which I could fork and maintain any of the software (FOSS or proprietary) that I use. I only use #FOSS more often than not because it _tends_ to respect the user (who is *not* necessarily also a programmer).

NEWSCARD: Decentralized, Encrypted Paste Bin via Usenet Newsgroups

• NEWSCARD * Publish and fetch permanent named records via Network News

Newscard creates a decentralized, encrypted, named record paste bin.

With a single command, name the card, snarf the file and encrypt it.

With another command, push the encrypted file to the public network.

With another short command, snarf a file from the network.

Only users knowing the name [key] of the record will be able to decrypt it.

If a strong passphrase is used to name the file, it will be very secure.

This is useful for quickly snarfing, encrypting, and publishing a text file:

$~: card enc [passphrase] [file]
$~: card put [passphrase]

It is useful for retrieving a text file with just a key:

$~: card get [passphrase]
$~: card show [passphrase]

If and when you want the general public to access the record just share the keyword.

Newscard uses nine (9) (NINE) layers of encryption with OpenSSL chacha20 cipher.

Newscard generates 9 each of: cipher keys, salts, key iteration parameters.

It would be nice if something like this were added to the ActivityPub protocol, such that keyword[@]host.url would do the same thing. Then secret text records could be stored securely for later retrieval or revelation.

Yes, totally. I 'blame' #FOSS culture here. Most FOSS starts as hobby projects, when some dev starts to code. When the project grows and sees popular uptake suddenly countless different factors become important, requiring skills beyond coding. These are often badly accounted for. Product development, documentation, organization, PR. Here FOSS might take more example from how the business world operates and sustains, albeit generally not on the values that FOSS holds dear.

For #SX I defined the #FSDL here, the Free software development lifecycle, or #Fediverse solution delivery lifecycle, depending on context. It has different stages, where different roles and activities become important to be addressed. There are countless facets that need to be accounted for, for a project to become self-sustainable.

The challenge is even much tougher, when scaling it to encompass entire grassroots ecosystems, where everyone relies on robust #technology foundations.

How this is implemented is crucial for the future of the #fediverse. An app having app-specific integrations to some - indeed ethical - payment systems, is one thing. But for instance offering native #monetization features on #ActivityPub protocol level, and not thinking *very hard* about the implementation and impact of that, can totally enshittify the #fedi in no time in how it attracts the wrong type of people with dollar signs in their eyes.

The current app-centric fediverse is the playground of devs and "users" that have to swallow what they create and drop onto the wire. #FOSS culture is a poor model for the evolution of the fediverse, where the latter is an existing social space where people, the online residents, have their home. It is much more than a pure technosphere and playground for app devs.

Fedi isn't ready to be growth-hacked. If successful it'll undoubtedly see corporate capture with Corporate Fedi the outcome, same as the web.
