Kind of a broad #ActivityPub question, for platforms implementing groups in the #Fediverse

We see maybe 2 or 3 different use-cases for how groups are leveraged in the Fediverse today:

1. Traditional Discussion Groups: Lemmy-style communities, NodeBB forum categories, basically a moderated Community Actor where people send activities to the group, and the group actor relays them to all group members.
2. Publication Groups: WordPress-style, the Group Actor represents a publication, and individual Actors serve as the article authors.
3. Structured Account Groups: PeerTube-style, the Account Actor is the parent object that delegates everything for Child Actors representing individual channels owned by that account.

So, I guess my question is: let's say your instance has an index of known remote groups. You just want to show discussion groups, not PeerTube accounts or Flipboard collections. How do you denote the discussion groups, and filter out the rest?

depending on who is doing the metrics, Spanish is the second (# of sites) or third (% people) most used language on the internet.

my #fediverse multilingual anecdata is that Spanish is not only the 2nd most used language, but a big chunk of Spaniards are from “minority” languages; with Catalan, Euskera and Gallego leading the way.

my impression of el #fediverso is that most folks are from Spain, followed by Cono Sur, México, and a smattering of everybody else, esp Puerto Rico 😘✊🏽

Fediverse | Wie steht es eigentlich in Sachen ActivityPub C2S (Client-to-Server) Schnittstelle?

Derzeit läuft die gängige Kommunikation im Fediverse ja über eine Server 2 Server (S2S) API, also die verschiedenen Installationen der Plattformen kommunizieren/federieren miteinander und die Benutzer nutzen die Weboberfläche oder eine App die über spezifische Schnittstellen mit den Plattformen kommuniziert. Eine Umsetzung von C2S ist mir jedoch nicht bekannt, wo das doch wirklich schlanke Fediverse Server die nicht den Ballast eines Frontends mit sich schleppen müssten erlauben würde. Sprich es würde zu einer noch sehr viel weitergehenden Dezentralisierung kommen. Natürlich könnte man wenn man das will auch weiterhin einen Fediverse Server und ein Webfrontend auf einen Server packen.

Occasionally I'm asked why I use *many* hash tags on #Fediverse. Typically every non-“quiet public”/PM post of mine has at least one hashtag.

I do this is b/c of the difficulty of topic discovery on Fediverse. The federated nature means, as we all know, no algorithm is pushing content at users. But, speaking at least for myself, I *want* content about topics that interest me pushed at me, & that's what hashtags can do.

I am curious though if Fedi experts like @cwebber & @evan agree with this.

@evan What's the point of other instances existing if every instance follow the same mod policies ? That's just... idk, boring.

That's like going to a friend's or relative's house but they also have the same exact 1 to 1 rules from back home.

It'd be alright if all instances follow a general set of rules, then it's up instance admins to add whatever rules they want.

What if next year's #FediDay became a Democratic Social Media Day?

We need fewer conversations exclusively among Fediverse enthusiasts, and more conversations among people who care about democracy and are actively seeking alternatives to Big Tech social media.

Let's bring together journalists, politicians, civil society organizations, researchers, and grassroots activists.

And let's bring more diversity to the stage: immigrants, Black communities, people from the Global South, and minority groups who are already using the internet to organize, mobilize, and make their voices heard.

Not everyone is on the Fediverse. Some are exploring other alternatives. Others are politically active on Big Tech platforms because that's where their communities are. Let's invite them too, listen to their experiences, and understand their needs.

We need to move beyond discussing alternative platforms and start treating political communication as democratic public infrastructure.

This should be a European-level effort, bringing together EU institutions, governments, civil society, and diverse communities.

The Fediverse should be part of that conversation, but the conversation needs to be much bigger than the Fediverse.

One of the main reasons people are seeking alternatives to Big Tech social media is the threat these platforms pose to democracy, particularly through algorithms that amplify polarization and hate speech.

If we can't convince democratic institutions and influential public figures to join the #Fediverse, its potential to make political communication less dependent on Big Tech infrastructure will remain very limited.

I don't blame the many journalists and civil society organizations that have chosen #Bluesky instead. They are important allies in defending democracy.

That's one of the main reasons I believe bridges between these two decentralized spaces are so important.
