How mature is this repository? My long quest for open-source software metrics

When I discover an open-source software project for the first time, how can I estimate whether it is mature, healthy and usable?

I just released OSSTRL - Open Source Software Technology Readiness Level to help me calculating the maturity of open-source projects.

On November 30, 2022, I tooted for the first time on Mastodon.

          “Hello world!”

Then I began tooting my and a ton of , and . Everyone here responded so genuinely, and with such positivity, that I was very quickly made to feel at home.

My deepest gratitude goes out to the community, a that has literally improved the quality of my time on this spinning rock as it hurtles through space, towards a future that seems more uncertain every day. You have been my friends, my therapists, my critics and fans, as well as an inspiration and reliable sounding board. Mastodon really is unlike any other “social media platform” out there.

Today, I celebrate the arbitrary milestone of twelve thousand followers, and I wanted to say thank you.

Thank you for the favourites, the boosts, the follows, and the comments.

Thank you for your conversations, discussions, and corrections.

Thank you for listening to my music and sharing your thoughts, and for following along on your chosen streaming service. Your support has been amazing.

But, above all, I’d like to thank you all for making Mastodon the friendly and welcoming place that it is. My experience here has predominantly been one of acceptance and support, and it has been truly humbling. There is nowhere else quite like it.

Massive huge love and big gigantic hugs to you all,

I profoundly believe that there is on this horizon, as yet only dimly perceived, a new dawn of conscience. In that purer light, people will come to see themselves in each other, which is to say they will make themselves known to one another by their similarities rather than by their differences. Man’s knowledge of things will begin to be matched by man’s knowledge of self. The significance of a smaller world will be measured not in terms of military advantage, but in terms of advantage for the human community. It will be the triumph of the heartbeat over the drumbeat.

When I was still facilitator of I claimed that it wasn't a community in any real sense, with mostly driving by on self-interested motives. It was just a discussion , where a poor commons janitor (me) had to do the unthankful volunteer upkeep.

"Expectation mismatch" plays an important role when anyone mentions "community". A "community-driven project" is partly the formal that is in place, but mostly implicit cultural aspects. Knowing what you can expect is important, to not get disappointed.

A instance to me isn't . I only use the Home timeline.

As we navigate fedi we 'weave' in and out of seamlessly, without realizing it. A rich concept of inter-community networking is possible, I think, but it should be carefully designed.
