Online age checks create privacy risks https://www.futurity.org/online-age-checks-privacy-risk-3336572/
However, by measuring online age verification, researchers reveal that the reality of these systems is far from ideal. The study found that most sites covered by these laws do not appear to enforce age verification.
📱 Apple's Age Verification in Texas: Impacts and Challenges for Users
Apple's age verification for the App Store in Texas raises questions about privacy, compliance, and its broader implications for users and developers.
Engadget: Apple begins requiring age verification for App Store use in Texas . “New Apple Accounts in Texas will be subject to SB 2420 and will need to verify their ages. A parent or guardian will need to provide consent when minors download apps or significant updates to apps and when they make in-app purchases. Developers will also need to support parents or guardians revoking that consent to […]

📱 Apple's Age Verification Rules: Navigating Compliance Challenges in Texas
Apple's age verification for new accounts in Texas highlights compliance challenges amid ongoing legal battles over privacy and safety.
Probably dumb question but if California's AB 1856 requires age verification for web browsers does that mean all Electron apps will be aged gated?
Samsung ID Verification is Here.
https://dailyobservations.mataroa.blog/p/samsung-id-verification-is-here/
Put my SIM card from my iPhone 12 (iOS 26.2) into my Pixel 3a (LineageOS 22.2/Android 15) for today.
So far everything is working. I might want to switch to Android in the future considering where iPhone and iOS is going with age verification.
Currently, macOS is fine as I can easily downgrade if I update but iOS is barely hanging on.
At least I have a backup device (albeit without 5G) that I can use if the unthinkable happens.
#Apple #Android #LineageOS #AgeVerification #Tech #Technology
The Texas app store #ageverification is back after a recent court rulling. But it might not apply to #fdroid or #Linux app #repositories because it has to do with #appstore 'accounts'
Everyone should install the #opensource f-droid app store on your #smartphone especially if you live in Texas because that type of app store model is seemingly the most safe from this type of app store age verification law.
App Repositories with ZERO accounts most likely to not be targeted legally in Texas.
His comment:
I don't understand why developers have to change the apps for new age verification, that should be up to the store when selling the product to do on purchase, why are they even getting their % of money anyway?
The attached image, the email he got:
https://media.thebrainbin.org/3f/f8/3ff8b193449ba67ac4e41546a1c8b106e224f6b71bc851a7f6dcf27b04973478.png
Besides what I commented in his post, some more things come to mind that I think add to it:
The US is a federation, meaning one province's laws shouldn't directly affect the others. But the email he received says that he has "at least one app (...) available to (...) users in the U.S.", and right next explaining it's due to Texas' App Store Accountability Act. This implies the laws of one province are affecting how the program is provided for the whole union, or at least that Google is making it so. Granularity is nowhere to be found it seems.
Also in the part that I quoted, the second omitted element is "or used by (users in the U.S.)". People can get access to stuff not officially available in their countries legitimately, apparently those being considered imports in such cases (please correct me if I'm wrong). And extrapolating, such programs could even "be used" by pirates and people circumventing geoblocking. So in all cases, would the developer be tied to the laws of a country by how an user uses it? Feels like a trap.
Age verification for social media, the beginning of the end for a free internet?
#HackerNews #ageverification #socialmedia #freeinternet #digitalrights #privacyconcerns
"Meanwhile, the AI strategy itself threatens to create more barriers to AI adoption. The strategy is expected to include mandated age verification for using both social media and AI chatbots, with a plan to establish new restrictions on the use of these services for those under the age of 16. But limiting AI access to adults will require everyone to certify their age, typically through foreign third-party services that introduce new privacy risks to sensitive personal information.
You can’t proclaim AI leadership while eschewing rules that address safety issues for all users by instead relying on age-gating services with requirements that will affect tens of millions of Canadians. Yet that is what the federal government is proposing to do with promises of “AI for all” that may actually become “ID for all”.
None of this is hypothetical, either, because Ottawa has been here before. When it passed the Online News Act, it brushed aside warnings that Meta would block news rather than pay for news links. And when Meta followed through on its threats – a blockade that is in place to this day – Canadians simply lost access to the links (and credible information) that the law was trying to protect. The lesson the government keeps ignoring is that when the rules become impossible or unpalatable to follow, companies are prepared to leave."

Privacy is easy to lose and incredibly difficult to get back.Once the infrastructure exists, the rules can always change.

I hate talking about #ageverification but supposibly the #California state law: "ab 1856"
is expanding beyond #operatingsystems. It will potentially now apply to, the #webbrowser level, and a return to age verification applying to websites?
While an extension to #browser is horrifying but now #Meta is screwed over, here's why.
If the law passes in this current state, Meta is being targeted again and the government, keeps meta's lobbying money. Did meta really thought they were going to exempt them in the long term? Well they weren't, they want to regulate the entirety of the internet and technology.
Up to the text output before it reaches a "minors screen" as they claim, it's for the minors protection.
>> When all these laws get stamped and approved, what happens when you run an operating system (let’s say Fedora or Ubuntu) and some web service or application is forced to do age checking and verification (or they face massive fines). Unless Linux distributions / desktop environments do end up implementing something that correctly adheres to these laws, what do you think will happen?

One Step Forward, Two Steps Back: CA's #AB1856 Exempts #OpenSource But Expands Age-Gating

Nonetheless, the current bill still jeopardizes internet users’ speech, #privacy , and #security.

https://rbfirehose.com/2026/05/29/bbc-ai-will-be-used-to-estimate-age-of-asylum-seekers-from-next-year/I have been thinking of signing up on open source chat platform for quite some time, and we are entering the second half of 2026 which means that Discord will implement global age verification at anytime, it is starting to be urgent for me to have an account on an open source chat platform.
Thing is, what is preventing me from being on open source chat platform is that I am having a choice paralysis. I'm not sure if I should go for Fluxer, Matrix, XMPP. 🤔
I could sign up on all three... but... this idea just... I kind of don't like it... I would prefer to only be on one platform.

I wonder if it's legal to submit your id, to a social media:
can just redact your name, and your address from it. Maybe keep the adult selfie for some type of proof of age, but as long that they got the supposive Id could you argue the social platform did the best they could had they shouldn't be legally responsible beyond that point?
If yes, would these platforms allow users to submit redacted ids that only contain necessary info or would they decline it because the point of age verification was to get all of your personal information available on that Id card to resell behind your back for profit?
I mean as long that it isn't obviously faked.
