Discusses suicide of Adam Raine, encouragement to self-harm by ChatGPT [SENSITIVE CONTENT]

@brianmerchant lays out in plain terms the "moral abomination" of the death of Adam Raine, who died by suicide after months of interactions with ChatGPT. "[The AI industry] is willing to countenance a genuine and seemingly widespread mental health crisis among some of its most engaged users, including the fact that its products are quite literally leading to their deaths, in a quest to maximize market share and time-on-screen. Move fast, break minds, perhaps."

A team at three U.S. universities developed an AI-powered browser extension that modifies how content appears on X and then tested it on 1,200 participants in the run up to the 2024 U.S. presidential election. The tool scans posts for anti-democratic and negative partisan views (such as calling for violence towards supporters of an opposing party) and then re-orders the posts so polarizing content is shown either more or less to participants. The scientists found that attitudes towards the opposing party changed on average by two points, and that the participants who saw less hostile content reported feeling less angry and sad while using X. The extension did not need the participation of X and, the team behind it noted, could be a way of reranking social media posts "without platform collaboration." Here's more from @euronews.

In August, Matthew and Maria Raine sued OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, over their 16-year-old son Adam’s suicide, accusing the company of wrongful death. OpenAI responded to the lawsuit with a filing of its own this week, arguing that it shouldn’t be held responsible for the teenager’s death. @Techcrunch has more on this sad and important story that some may find difficult to read:

This year, three U.S. states filed lawsuits against Roblox over child-safety issues, and 20 lawsuits were filed accusing the platform of enabling sexual exploitation. How did CEO David Baszucki respond when asked by Hard Fork hosts @caseynewton and Kevin Roose about the problem of predators on Roblox? He dismissed the issue, and even described it as "an opportunity." Newton writes for Platformer News about what he thinks Baszucki's responses says about the tech industry at large. "Over and over again, we have seen leaders in Baszucki's position choose growth over guardrails. Safety features come out years after the need for them is identified, if at all. Internal critics are sidelined, laid off, or managed out. And when journalists ask, politely but insistently, why so many of their users are suffering, executives laugh and tell us that we're the crazy ones."
