I've been of the opinion one can learn Debian by picking up an book - but only if the person has some experience. The gotchas do exist but for setting up servers, I would expect the processes between the two to be similar.

Ubuntu, while a derivative, has forked far enough that it's definitely not 1:1. and were much closer in that regard (but they also were not the same).

As for SUSE, sure you can check it out. I've used it on and off since 2005 and have seen and felt its changes. Just my opinion:

SUSE just feels...incomplete. It has good ideas but poor execution. It markets itself as the distro for users, sysadmins, developers, and makers. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to quite meet the challenge since each of those users have very different needs and instead has some kind of identity crisis. The lack of packages in its stock repos, along with many 3rd party apps not supporting it, shows. It wants to appeal to everyone but instead lacks focus.

Interestingly, Debian is much closer to being for everyone (or the universal OS) given its repos and flexibility. Unfortunately documentation is where it falls short.

I've been using Debian as my daily driver for the past two decades. When I think of , I think of Debian. To me, other distros are merely other Linux-based operating systems.

      Yeah, driver/hardware support and stability.

I've had OpenBSD kernel panic on me when I was trying to probe for battery threshold settings, and FreeBSD will freeze when pulling up a heavy website, even on a (merely) not-quite ten-year-old laptop. 😅

I don't doubt that OpenBSD has way better security features than linux, and that the FreeBSD network stack can outperform Linux in many ways. But in my own (dinky) experience on nothing other than laptops, it hasn't been perfect.

That said, I've seriously loved the #BSD experience, and continue to daily drive (Free|Open)BSD on my personal machines. I only have one Linux laptop now, and while it's the nicest laptop I own, I use it the least.

Also, there are small things like KOReader not being available for FreeBSD, even though it's written in Lua and there's plenty of Lua support in FreeBSD. Also, OpenBSD (which, again, is amazing for what it is, and what they're wanting to concentrate on) still has no Bluetooth, nor any modern fs options. And I have yet to figure out how to get audio out of my headphone port on FreeBSD, let alone bluetooth.

I'd just love to see the #Linux community embrace the kind of OS-building that the BSD guys do every day, and not just ship an amalgam of disparate parts.

To say it in a meme form,

Me: "Why can't Linux be an OS, for crying out loud?"
      Systemd: exists
Me: "No, no, no, not like that. 🫣"

Since switching to Linux, I no longer have to wait HOURS for software updates on Windows & macOS. I can take almost ANY distro from the past year or so (or older in many cases) , install it from an ISO and then update it to the latest and greatest in LESS TIME than it takes to perform a simple point update on macOS.

And then they have the nerve to notify you that your machine is gonna be SLOW while all those new files get indexed.

            No, thanks.

Surveillance relies on sensors being present.

PH4NTXM removes that assumption at the kernel level.

Microphone, camera, and audio output never reach userspace.
Applications, browsers, and malware have nothing to enumerate, request, or exploit.

When sensors don’t exist to the operating system, surveillance tooling loses its footing — not because it’s blocked, but because the attack surface is gone.

                        There’s no muting.
                        No permissions.
                        No trust model.

By enforcing sensor absence at the kernel boundary, entire categories of monitoring and exfiltration simply fail by design.

                        This isn’t anti-surveillance through resistance.
                        It’s anti-surveillance through architecture.

I've had quite an interesting time over the last few days with #ManjaroLinux. It has a beautifully put together KDE plasma desktop, and it's really slick. However, it's definitely not for the beginner. For me, the experience has been like going back in time a few years, but with the advantage of having #Claude and #Gemini to help me.

Thanks to AI (and a lot of prior knowledge, an essential when using AI in my opinion), I was able to get a number of things working that didn't just work out of the box, including:
                          - an Epson printer/scanner
                          - a Brother laser printer
                          - a Bluetooth mouse
                          - KVM virt-manager

The mouse was the most interesting. I'd read that my MediaTek chipset isn't well supported, and through the UI it detected the mouse but refused to successfully connect. However, using the command line bluez utility all is good.

One final thing to work out is why it's not going to sleep. It'll sleep when triggered manually, but not when left idle. I suspect the web browser might be at fault, but that's tomorrow's challenge.

All in all, despite my reservations about #Linux distros with systemd, #Manjaro has greatly exceeded my expectations. Isn't #FOSS great?

Was ist der Digital Independence Day?
