The agenda of ultra-rich right-wing Catholics in the US has for years now been to make the Catholic church in the US an arm of the Republican party, with the bishops fully cooperating with this, and to attack and undermine Catholic social teaching and its preferential option for the poor.
Until the bishops face their complicity in what Trump is doing, many of us will listen to anything they say with muted attention.
And at the same meeting at which the US bishops made their immigration statement, they elected as their president a culture-war hero, Coakley of Oklahoma City, who is thickly allied with the hard-right Catholic organization Napa Institute, a vehicle by which ultra-rich right-wing Catholics in the US use their money to try to combat the Vatican's emphasis on social teaching. Coakley was openly contemptuous of Pope Francis.
More than half of white Catholics voted for Trump three times. Until the US Catholic bishops acknowledge their own huge complicity in bringing us Donald Trump — since who has been leading those white Catholics all these years after all? — their statement about immigration will ring rather hollow for many of us, welcome as the words are.
Trump's vice-president Vance and his border czar Homan are, after all, Catholics.
Over half of US white Catholics (and of white Christians across the board) voted for the horrors and cruelty the Trump administration is visiting on immigrants. Those white Catholics cast their votes with the same US bishops who recently issued their immigrant statement as their pastoral and moral leaders.
"But [the bishops] didn’t talk about what got us here. Over 50 percent of Catholics were okay with this, with the rhetoric of dehumanizing immigrants. They’re not talking about how we engage with those issues in the political sphere.”
Holler is talking about the fact that over half of white Catholics voted for what Trump and Stephen Miller are now doing to immigrants.
"The brief statement accurately describes Church teaching and lays out the crisis at hand, specifically mentioning profiling, vilification, and family separation. But it avoids any mention of President Donald Trump, the administration, or ICE."
As Katie Holler, a founder of the Dorothea Project, a group of Catholic women committed to highlighting Catholic social teaching, says,

As the media are noting, at long last, the US Catholic bishops spoke out last week about the brutality and cruelty the Trump administration is visting on immigrants. As National Catholic Reporter says, at least something. The bishops' statement is making waves in the media at large, and that's a good thing.
But as National Catholic Reporter also rightly says,
"I tell myself that this is what progress looks like in a tempestuous time — a roller coaster whose highs are higher than its lows.
This past week’s Democratic sellout was certainly a low. But the high of the November 4 elections was higher, because it changed the trajectory of the nation. ...
All the while, Trump’s polls have continued to tank. Only 33 percent now approve of the way he’s managing the government, down from 43 percent in March."

The White House’s responses fit a pattern of suspicious behavior from the president on this matter. #Trump has said of #Epstein’s accomplice, #GhislaineMaxwell, “I wish her well”—a strange thing to say about a #convicted #felon who systematically abused young girls. His admin has granted her a cushy upgrade for her stint in prison, including a transfer to a minimum-security camp & puppy visits. This has the appearance of a #QuidProQuo.
#Epstein’s emails also imply that #Trump was aware of his #SexTrafficking scheme. “Of course he knew about the girls,” Epstein wrote in an email. If I met a teenager who I knew to be a likely victim of a sex-trafficking ring, I’d like to think that I’d try to help them contact #law enforcement or get away. Also, if I discovered that a close friend was running a sex-trafficking ring, maybe I’d reconsider our friendship, rather than engaging in long, pleasant chats w/ his victims.
