There's a balance between being social and having privacy. Privacy does not have to mean that everything you do is cloaked and no one knows who you are. It means that not everything you do, say, or think is being watched and recorded without your permission.

This post is NOT private! I am publishing for all to see (though only a small number of people will see it).

If I want to communicate details of something to a friend or a business client, I would use an encrypted messenger so that those details are not published for all to see.

Privacy is taking the steps limit the broadcast of information about your activities. No law can accomplish that. Only you.

They are AI augmented surveillance that happens to support reading license plates. But also facial recognition, behavior analysis, location tracking, audio analysis, and who knows what else.

"The city of Dayton, Ohio has covered its Flock automated license plate reader cameras with black trash bags in part because police there are unsure whether the cameras are still active and the city also doesn’t seem to know whether it is allowed to take the cameras down. The move comes after months of resident outrage, a scandal in which the city was sharing Flock camera data for immigration enforcement apparently on accident, and a $30,000 audit into how the cameras are being used.

Joe Parlette, the deputy city manager of Dayton, said at a city commission meeting last week that the “Dayton Police Department agreed to work with Public Works to put bags over the cameras” as a stop-gap measure until Flock cameras could be removed entirely. I spoke to multiple people in Dayton who said they had seen bagged cameras in the last few days. The Dayton Daily News first reported on the baggings.

Dayton is not the first city to cover its Flock cameras with trash bags because they can’t figure out how to immediately terminate the use of the cameras. Late last year, the city of Evanston, Illinois also covered its cameras with trash bags while it was waiting for the company to remove them from the city. Cities around the country have been reconsidering their relationship with the surveillance company after reporting from 404 Media and local news outlets that showed data from the cameras was making its way to Immigration and Customs Enforcement through Flock’s national camera network."

Completely on brand for this fascist regime.

Many of my criticisms of certain tech and all surveillance capitalism have to do with my fierce belief in the importance of privacy and other individual rights, and the tech co’s determination to strip everyone of privacy and destroy individual rights.

We can’t have without and . So of course the Trump regime and supporting Republican and tech fascists would label people who care about and advocate for both as “extremists” to try and sully and dismiss the message while hoping to chill public discourse. Everyone who heard “censorship” wave your hand. 1st Amendment, lol.

Also helps loot the American people and Treasury more easily if payments can be made with taxpayer monies for [ahem] “necessary!!” “AI!!”.

AI browsers can summarize pages, compare options, plan tasks, and sometimes take actions for you.

That is useful — but it also creates new privacy and trust risks.

Organizations like mine woke up to find they were already automatically enrolled. Oh, but you can opt-out of course. "Why this is opt out, not opt in... Put simply, because otherwise we will not have enough data to train a model that's actually useful" (posthog.com/blog/training-ai-m). While on their own account management page, "you are responsible for ensuring your use complies with applicable laws and regulations."

If your business model depends on violating customer and exposing your clients to novel legal/PR/ethical risks, then you have a bad business. I chose to pay posthog instead of free analytics because of their stronger privacy position. Guess I got that one wrong.

Hi, my employer is sponsoring an academic research on parenting and flexible working. A lot of sensitive questions are asked and the university researcher has circulated these questions on Google Forms to all employees. I am really anti-Google when it comes to privacy (got rid of every Google link years ago and currently use GOS, etc.) so I raised this concern with the HR team. They were sympathetic with my view and have encouraged me to send my view to the university. However, I don’t want to go down the rant, and want to provide constructive feedback. So, first thought I would to consult with privacy focused members of this list. Here are my questions:

                                                                    a) are there independent research papers out there that demonstrate (rather than speculate) that Google Forms is not fully respecting privacy and is not fully GDPR compliant?

                                                                    b) are there more robust, privacy and GDPR compliant alternatives I could recommend? I’ve done quick searches on the web and alternatives like JotForm and AidaForm seem to be more privaci and GDPR focused. Anyone used these before?

Am I being too anal about this …?
