now nearly 20 years after it was first published, rob o’hara’s Commodork remains to be the most faithful recollection of the bbs era. i’ve re-read it almost every year since it was printed, and i’m always struck by how accurate his memory for the warez and modeming scene is.

i’m amazed that we still do not have a comprehensive written history of BBSes to this day.

I was feedbacking to sysop, and they broke into chat! Solved it.

You have to go into individual BBS settings, and change Telnet to Raw. Still get some CRC-16 errors, then it downloads fine!

Turns out FREEWAY.ATR was actually a 7Z of 2600 Freeway games, but ENCOUNT is actually an Atari 8-bit game file, copy it into an ATR image and you get to play Encounter, a Battlezone-like!

Leechin' like it's 1984! I'll go find something to upload in a bit, keep my U/D high!

and posted a bit, but I couldn't get SyncTerm to download xmodem correctly.

You have to start the download on the board, then hit opt-D, type the filename, pick Xmodem, and it supposedly works… but mine just errored out with CRC-16 errors, gives up before doing CRC-8, still failing. Ergh.

(yes, I can get all files off archive, that's not the POINT).

Still, fun to explore.

There wasn't yet a right-click copy-and-paste mouse feature. Which can be disconcerting today, haha.

I still use it several times a week because I like browsing bulletin boards from MSDOS. And doing it from Windows 3.1 allows me to switch from MSDOS to Windows at any time to take notes, for example. Or play Zork, Nethack, etc..

Windows 3.1: launching it today (in 5s!), the essentials are still there! :0)
